ORVILLE LIEDLE

The service for Orville Liedle, 76, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Leola, with Pastor Nathan Henschen officiating. Burial will be at Green Mound Cemetery, Leola. Orville died Sunday, January 4, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Tuesday, January 6, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Orville Liedle was born July 27, 1932 at Trail City, SD to Jacob & Marie (Heupel) Liedle. He grew up on a farm NE of Leola and attended school in Carl Township.

In 1949, Orville and his mother moved to Leola. He did yard work, mowed lawns, babysat, and worked for a grass seeding company. In the fall of 1978, he moved to a housing apartment, where he lived until 1995. Orville then moved into Aberdeen Living Center.

Grateful for having shared Orville’s life are his two sisters, Alice (Julius) Bonnet, Newell, SD and Arlean Kusler, Cokato, MN.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and seven brothers.

MARY MARGARET BOYD

The service for Mary M. Boyd, 82, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Friday, January 9, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Tom Holslag officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Mary died Sunday, January 4, at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

Visitation will be from 5-7pm, Thursday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Mary M. Boyd was born on February 25, 1926, in Vandalia, IL. She was the only child of Paul & Anna Deming.

She attended college in Terre Haute, IN and received an RN Nursing Degree. Mary was employed as a registered nurse for two years at the Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

On November 26, 1948, she married Don A. Boyd from Aberdeen, SD. Don was attending Rose Poly Technical College obtaining a Civil Engineering Degree.

After her marriage, Mary moved to Aberdeen, where she has lived happily for the last sixty years. During her time in Aberdeen, she became actively involved in the community and the First Presbyterian Church. Mary enjoyed strong relationships with her family and friends. Her generous heart and great sense of humor endeared her to everyone who knew her.

Mary was preceded in death by her former husband, Don.

Grateful for having shared Mary’s life are her two children, Don (Woody) Boyd and Polly (Boyd) Romano, Denver, CO. She has two grandchildren, Jamie Boyd and Zachary (Reno) Boyd, who also reside in Denver. Her family was her greatest joy.

In her later years, due to declining health, Mary moved to the Aberdeen Health and Rehab Center, where she has resided for the last four years. Mary had an active social life and developed close relationships with the residents and the staff.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the First Presbyterian Church.

MERCEDES VOLK

Mass Of Christian Burial for Mercedes Volk, 86, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen, with Father Ed Pierce officiating. Burial will follow at the Groton Cemetery. Mercedes passed away January 4, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.

Visitation: 1-7pm, Tuesday, family present from 5-7, with a wake at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Mercedes Kelley was born December 25, 1922, to Verne & Iva (White) Kelley at Aberdeen, SD. She graduated from Pierre High School and attended Northern State Teacher’s College, where she received her teaching degree.

She enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and married Les Julson on September 25, 1944 in Bremerton, WA. Les died on January 5, 1975. She then married John Volk in October of 1979. John died December 3, 1998.

Mercedes taught school for forty-two years in various towns in the Aberdeen area. She was extremely active in every community where she taught and lived.

Mercedes loved bridge, sewing, traveling, and being with family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Mercedes’ life are Leslie Ann (Allen) Schmit, Sr. Rita Cameron, Susan (Jim) Ewalt; three sisters, Kathryn Keenan & family, Aberdeen; Sr. Verna Kelley, Aberdeen; Margaret Smith, Phoenix, AZ; brother, Richard Kelley and daughters, Aberdeen; special friend, Bernie Simon & family, Aberdeen; eight grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands; two brothers; one sister; and son-in-law.

LENORE EDITH DAHME LARSON

The funeral service for Lenore Edith Dahme Larson, 86, of Chattanooga, TN, formerly Aberdeen, SD, will be 10:00am, Friday, January 9, 2009 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Lenore died Thursday, January 1, at Chattanooga, TN.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Thursday, January 8, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Lenore Edith Dahme was born on August 29, 1922 to Arthur and Magdalene (Ristau) Dahme, near Mina, SD. The fourth of five children, she grew up in rural Highland Township, and graduated from Warner High School. She attended then Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, obtaining a one-year teachers certificate. She taught in rural one room schools near Randolph until her marriage to Duwain K. Larson on September 22, 1943 at rural Aberdeen.

She and Duwain farmed in the rural Aberdeen and Mansfield areas for many years. In 1970 they moved to Aberdeen where she worked at the Brown County Treasurers Office. In 1972 she returned to Northern State College, took the beginning real estate sales course, and proceeded to earn the highest score on the state real estate exam. She made many friends in her real estate career, and was active into her 80s, winning many awards for her sales.

In retirement she lived briefly at Parkside Retirement Center in Aberdeen, and then at National Healthcare Center in Chattanooga, TN.

Grateful for having shared Lenore’s life are her two daughters, Myrene (Rev. Donald) Treick of Lookout Mountain, GA, and Karen (William) Potter of Old Fort, NC; three grandchildren, Rachel (Orlando) Cervantes of San Luis Obispo, CA, Rev. Joel (Kate) Treick of Lookout Mountain, GA, William Potter of Old Fort, NC; four great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and
cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Duwain, parents, Arthur and Magdalene, an infant son, Lynn Duwain Larson, two sisters and two brothers.

LOIS SUMPTION

Services for Lois Sumption, 81, of Aberdeen and formerly Frederick will be 2 pm, Friday, January 9, 2009 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Galen Sylvester officiating. Burial at Wayside Cemetery, Frederick. Lois died Thursday, January 1 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation 1-7 pm, Thursday, January 8 at the funeral home and 9 am to time of service on Friday.

The family prefers memorials to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Frederick.

Lois Gabel was born on March 13, 1927 at Bath, SD to Leo and Theodocia (Crow) Gabel. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Bath High School with the class of 1945. On June 17, 1945 she married Guy “Scotty” Sumption at Aberdeen. They made their home on a farm near Frederick. Lois and Scotty and their family raised and sold 4-H calves nationwide from an annual sale in southern Minnesota for thirty-eight years. Guy died on August 6, 2002 at Frederick. On December 10, 2005 she moved to Beverly Healthcare in Ipswich until March 22, 2006 when she moved to the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Lois was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Frederick. She also was a member of the Eastern Star, American Shorthorn Association and she loved dancing. She was a past member of the Barnard School Board. She loved 4-H club and corresponding with the 4-H children.

Grateful for having shared Lois’s life are her children, Robert Sumption, Frederick, William Sumption, Huron, Darlys (Bill) Miller, Marcus, IA, Delores Kramer, Worthington, MN, Janet Pence, Aberdeen and Leslie (Pam Thiesen) Sumption, Bath, thirteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, brother, Jack (Shirley) Gabel, sisters, Margaret Gab, Aberdeen and Eunice (Bud) Pirnie, Bath.

Lois is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Guy “Scotty” Sumption, brothers, Leon, Floyd and Vinton Gabel.

ADOLPH "UNCLE" HAAS

The funeral service for Adolph “Uncle” Haas, 82, of Aberdeen will be 3:00pm, Saturday, January 3, 2009, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Adolph died Tuesday, December 30, at ManorCare Health Services.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Friday, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Adolph Haas was born May 28, 1926 to Rudolph and Mary (Treichel) Haas at Bentley, ND. This is the area where he grew up and attended school.

On August 6, 1950 Adolph married Esther Fischer at Burt, ND. They made their first home and farmed in the Burt area until 1952, when Adolph began working in construction building bridge and steel structures. He worked in North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Montana. In 1969 the family moved to Aberdeen. Esther “Auntie” died January 9, 1993, in Aberdeen. Adolph continued to work in construction until retiring in 1994. Adolph enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved flowers, especially roses. Adolph loved children and spending time with his nieces and nephews.

Grateful for having shared Adolph’s life are his brothers; Henry (Eleanor) Haas of Lodi, CA, Harry Haas of Glendive, MT, Clifford (Agnes) Haas of Aberdeen, and Albert (Marie) Haas of Glendive, MT; three sisters: Bertha Kibbel of Mott, ND, Clara Milner of Manville, New Jersey, and Lorraine Klien of Culver, OR; his special friend, June Suedmeier of Aberdeen and many nieces and nephews.

Adolph was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Mary, his wife, Esther “Auntie”, sisters, Anna Peterson, Genevieve Hoff, his brother Alvin Haas, and an infant sister, Ida Haas.

The family prefers memorials.

ERWIN AMAN

Services for Erwin Aman, 91, Hosmer, will be 2pm, Saturday, January 3, 2009, at United Congregational Church, Hosmer, with Pastor Alvin Schmierer and Pastor Tim Vander Vorst officiating. Burial at Bethany Cemetery, Hosmer. Erwin died December 30, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Visitation: 1-7pm, Friday, with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Erwin R. Aman was born on November 14, 1917 at Hosmer, SD to Jacob and Louisa (Barth) Aman. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. He worked for the WPA Camp at Columbia. On January 21, 1940 he married Christina Eisenbeisz at Hosmer, SD. They made their home on a farm near Hosmer where he farmed and drove truck for several years. Christina died on April 5, 2003 at Hosmer.

Erwin was a member of United Congregational Church. He loved playing the piano. He especially loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Erwin’s life are his sons, Harlan (Janice) Aman, Lester (Carol) Aman both of Hosmer, daughter, Lucille (Dean) Gross, Aberdeen, ten grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren, brother, Jacob (Linda Peterman) Aman of Sioux Falls, sister-in-law, Esther Aman, Aberdeen, sister-in-law, Ermina Aman, Hosmer, SD, brother-in-law, Melvin Eisenbeisz, Aberdeen, and sister-in-law, Wilma Eisenbeisz-Spitzer, Leola, SD, and many nieces and nephews.

Erwin is preceded in death by his wife, Christina, parents, Jacob and Louisa Aman, brothers, Julius Aman, Edmund Aman, Milton Aman and sister, Lorina Aman.

EDITH F. VIRGIL

Services for Edith F. Virgil, 90, Mina Lake will be 1:00 pm, Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Edith died on Saturday, December 27 at her home.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Tuesday and 9 am to time of service at the funeral home.

The family prefers memorials to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

BERNICE RAWSTERN

The funeral service for Bernice Rawstern, 87, Aberdeen will be held 10:30 am, Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Bernice passed away on Friday, December 26 at her home in Aberdeen with loving family by her side.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 pm, Monday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with a prayer service at 7 pm.

The family requests that all memorials be directed to the church.

Bernice was born May 6, 1921 on a farm outside Northville, South Dakota to Harvey and Mary (Arthurs) Dickey. Her family moved to Mellette, South Dakota, when she was young, where she attended elementary and high school and where she met her future husband, Elias (Babe). While in high school she was on one of the first girls basketball teams in the area and played all four years. When she graduated in May 1939 she moved to Aberdeen and enrolled in the Bobette Beauty School. After graduating she got a job as a beauty operator at the Bobette Beauty Shop on 3rd Avenue SW where she worked till she married Elias in 1942. She lived in various parts of the country including Washington, California and Virginia till Elias was shipped overseas during WWII. She enlisted, for a short time, in the Army WAAC program where she trained to work in the flight control tower at Randolph Airforce Base in San Antanio, Texas. She then worked in several places around the country, including making ammunition in Oklahoma for the war effort. She came back to Aberdeen for the rest of the war and worked as a beauty operator till her husband came home.

They found a small apartment in Aberdeen after the war and then moved into their house on Second Avenue where she lived till her death. She always maintained her operator’s license and ran a small beauty shop out of her home for many years. She was one of the founding members of the Roosevelt Elementary School PTA and when her children were in class, she was a very active Room Mother. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen after they joined in the 1950’s and helped with the UPW, rummage sales, taught Sunday school and was co-committee chairwoman in charge of weddings for years.

After Elias retired, he and Bernice bought a motor home and traveled the country visiting family and friends. She enjoyed seeing the country and taking care of both of them in their home-away-from home and spending time with her extended family and friends. She was known as an exceptional cook and baker and was still canning and pickling till just before her death.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children; Nancy (Alvin) Kallas of Leola, Terry (Christine) Rawstern of Bradenton, FL and Sherri Rawstern of Aberdeen; her grandchildren Mike and Jodi Kallas, Missy and Ryan Gaikowski, Mary and Tom Schumacher, Carrie and Devon Kwasniewski, Amy and Chad Podhradsky, Terry Dean and Margaret Rawstern and Tricia and Lawrence Cannon; 4 step-grandchildren, 19 great and step-great grandchildren, sister, Bev (Bill) Cook, Oregon City, OR and her special friend Ramona Anderson.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband, her three brothers, Richard, Roy and Howard and her infant son, great-grandson and step-great grandson.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and family.
