ELIZABETH JEAN SULLIVAN

The memorial service for Elizabeth Jean Sullivan, 81, of Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Joe Moslander officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Elizabeth died Tuesday, December 23, at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.

Elizabeth Jean Smith was born December 27, 1926 at Moulmein, Burma to Joseph & Edna (Anderson) Smith. She lived in Burma, where her parents were missionaries. They moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1941, where Elizabeth graduated from Washington High School. She then graduated from Sioux Falls College with a BA in Christian Education. Elizabeth taught school in Goodwin, SD and later Hill City, SD.

On November 22, 1951, Elizabeth married George K. Sullivan at Hill City, SD. They later moved to Rapid City, where Elizabeth worked at the hospital. In 1963, they moved to Aberdeen. Elizabeth worked at Americana (now ManorCare) as a nurse’s aide. In 1966, she began teaching English at Central High School and retired in 1986 after 20 years. Elizabeth had a passion for teaching.

Elizabeth was active in AEA and SD Retired Teachers Association. She was a lifetime member of NEA and SDEA. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women, (AAUW) and worked their annual book fair. Elizabeth was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved traveling, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Elizabeth was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Elizabeth was known for open houses and Curry feeds.

Grateful for having shared Elizabeth’s life are her sons George P. (Sandy) Sullivan, and John Sullivan, Aberdeen; her daughter, Pam (Dr. Keith) Sullivan-Levi, Fairfield, IA; four grandchildren: Heather (Ben) Levi-Podoll, Juli (Brian) Sullivan-Schultz, Matthew (Kristen) Levi, Erin Levi, seven great grandchildren: Katherine, Claire, Samantha, Erica, Natalie, Lana and Lucy; two brothers: Art (Darlene) Smith, Midland, MI and David (Megan) Smith, Sioux Falls, SD; and sisters: Eleanor (Rev. Robert) Howard, Jackson, MN and Helen (Rev. Willard) Olsen, Piedmont, SD.

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph & Edna Smith; husband, George K. Sullivan; one brother, Joseph Smith, sister, Margaret Dailey, and granddaughter, Patricia Jane Sullivan.

The family prefers memorials to the AAUW.

LOIS MARIE WELLS

Services for Lois Marie Wells, 78, Great Falls, MT, are 10:00am, Monday, December 29, at Plymouth Congregational UCC, with Pastor Jill Warner officiating. Burial at Lakeview Cemetery, Columbia. Lois died December 21, after a courageous two year battle with cancer.

Visitation is from 2-5pm, Sunday with a prayer service at 5pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

HELEN LUCILLE HEIN

The service for Helen Lucille Hein, 85, Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Helen died Wednesday, December 17, at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

Burial of cremains will be held at a later date at Norway Lutheran Cemetery, Glenham, SD.

Helen Lucille Hein was born November 26, 1923, at rural Mound City, SD in Campbell County to John and Pearl (Hanson) Hein. This is the area where she attended grade school and high school. She then worked as a secretary for many years. The last fifteen years of her working life she was employed by the City of Aberdeen in the Zoning, Housing, Planning and Engineering Department.

Helen is survived by one sister, Irene A. Herzog of Waukesha, WI; nephew, Ed Murray, and his sons, Stephen & Timothy Murray; nephews, James (Donna) Herzog; John (Carmen) Herzog; and niece, Carol (David) Vandenberg .

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Glen; and one sister, Myrtle Murray.

ROSETTA NERISON

The service for Rosetta Nerison, 87, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Friday, December 19, 2008 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Rosetta died Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at Mother Joseph Manor.

Visitation is from 1-7pm, Thursday with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Rosetta Anna Plant was born May 25, 1921, in Miles City, MT to William Galen & Margaret (Hammond) Plant. The family moved to Roberts County, SD, where she attended a rural school and later moved to South Bryant through eighth grade. The family moved to Sisseton, where Rosetta graduated from high school in 1939.

Rosetta married Dawn B. Nerison of Peever on December 8, 1942, at Sisseton. In 1943, she taught in a rural school. Rosetta then went on to attend Northern State Teacher’s College.

In 1947, they moved to Aberdeen and attended NSU part time. In 1970, she went to work for Bath Elementary School of the Aberdeen School System for twelve years retiring in 1982.

She was active for several years at the First Presbyterian Church, Church Circle and Youth Group. Rosetta later joined the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Fellowship Circle and was Kitchen Co-Chair.

Rosetta was a Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Leader. She was active in the PTA and the Extension Club. She was a Lion’s Club Charter Member and was very active in the Lions Organiziation by volunteering and attending in many Lion’s Conventions; State, National, and International. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens, SHINE, AARP, TRIAD, RSVP, and Brown County Office on Aging. Rosetta enjoyed traveling, crafts, gardening, and later the computer.

Grateful for having shared Rosetta’s life are her daughters, Janice (Ruben) Mendoza, Clifton, N.J.; Georgia (Kurt) Smith, Frederick; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Nerison; granddaughter, Heather (Mathias) Stewart and their son, Mathias Stewart, Jr; grandsons, Keith Nerison; Yuri Mendoza; Peter Mendoza; brother, Herbert (Velva) Plant, Provo, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter, LaDonna; son, Allen; sisters, Carol Nigg; Lela Quenemoen; Mildred Kooiman; brother, William Plant; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

HERMAN HRUBY

The service for Herman Hruby, 79, Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Monday, December 22, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Herman died Tuesday, December 16, at his home.

Visitation will be from 10am-5pm, Saturday at the funeral home and from 8am until 11am on Monday.

MARIE TESKY

The service for Marie M. Tesky, 93, Aberdeen, will be 11 am, Saturday, December 20, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Marie died Monday, December 15, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Friday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Marie M. Heiser was born October 26, 1915, to Bill and Emma (Lutz) Heiser northwest of Greenway, SD. This is where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Eureka High School. Marie then went on to attend Northern Normal in Aberdeen, for two years and received her teaching certificate. She then taught school for a number of years in North and South Dakota.

On June 8, 1941, she married Ervin Tesky at Venturia, ND.

In 1952, they moved to Aberdeen, where they built, owned and operated the Tesky Motel. After they sold the motel in 1962, she worked at the First National Bank (Wells Fargo Bank) for several years and also worked at Bittner Pharmacy.

In 1965, they moved to California where her husband taught school and together they worked as troubleshooters for various motel chains. After retiring in 1975, they returned to Aberdeen.

Marie was instrumental in organizing the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Eureka where she was a life member.

Marie has been a member of First Baptist Church since 1953, where she was active in Ladies Circle and organized a senior citizen’s group, which was called “Young at Heart”.

Marie enjoyed visiting and socializing with friends and doing volunteer work for R.S.V.P, Senior Center, Cancer Society, United Way and the Salvation Army.

Grateful for having shared Marie’s life are her two children, Clark (Donna) Tesky, Fayetteville, West Virginia; Coralee (Jim) Harr, Aberdeen; and grandsons, Clark W. Tesky II, Jim (Kim) Harr, Jr. and great grandson, Hudson Harr, several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ervin who died on May 3, 1993; and two sisters, Martha Mack and Agnes Heiser.

MARILYN SMITH

Services for Marilyn J. Smith, 85, Aberdeen, are 10:30am, Saturday, December 20, at Zion Lutheran Church.

Marilyn Joyce Martin Smith was born January 20, 1923 in Aberdeen to Pearle and Frank Martin. She graduated from NHS and married Louis H. Smith on November 6, 1942.

Survived by: three children, Randall Smith, Aberdeen; Karel Hammer, Florida; Barry Smith, Colorado; brother, Donald Martin, AZ; sister, June Decker, NM; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

EDWIN MINTZ

The funeral service for Edwin Mintz, 83, of Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jais Tinglund and Pastor Raymond Pomplun officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, Aberdeen. Edwin died Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation is 1-7pm Monday, with family present from 5-7pm and a prayer service at 7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Edwin Paul Mintz was born on March 3, 1925 to William and Katherine (Fiechtner) Mintz at Monango, ND. He grew up on the family farm in the Monango and Ellendale, ND area. Ed attended school in Monango and graduated from Monango High School. He then went on to college at Normal and Industrial College in Ellendale, ND. Ed worked on a large farm in the area for several years and then worked for Fey Construction and Building. Ed served in the Field Artillery with the Army’s 5th Infantry in WWII.
Edwin married Verona Martin on October 19, 1947 at the Lutheran Church in Forbes, ND. In 1952, they moved to Aberdeen when Ed began working as a Star Route Mail Carrier. For 12 years he delivered mail for 20 towns between Aberdeen and Mobridge. He then worked as a Postal clerk for 27 years, retiring in 1989.

Ed was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, where he held numerous church offices. He was on the building committee for the church when they built the new fellowship hall. Ed was a gifted handyman and could fix almost anything. He used this gift to help the church and others, giving much of his time to help in any way needed. He was also a member of Our Savior Lutheran Men’s Club. Ed was a member of the National Federal Retired Employees for many years. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion.

Grateful for having shared Ed’s life are his wife, Verona, of Aberdeen, three sisters; Alma Utecht of Richland, WA, Louise Wonacott of California, and Nora (David) Buel of Richland, WA, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Katherine, and two sisters, Marie Schlenker and Esther Blecha.

The family prefers memorials.

CORA S. COZART

Services for Cora Cozart, 99, Aberdeen, are 11:00am, Monday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial at Riverside Memorial Park. Cora died Thursday at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation: one hour prior to the service.

MILDRED TURNWALL VIETMEIER

The service for Mildred Turnwall Vietmeier, 84, Aberdeen, formerly of Leola, will be 10:30am, Thursday, December 11, 2008 at St. James Lutheran Church, Leola, SD with Pastor Erik Swanson officiating. Burial at Greenmound Cemetery in Leola. Mildred died Sunday, December 7 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation is from 1-6pm, Wednesday with family present from 4-6 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Mildred Muhlbeier was born March 1, 1924 at Moscow Township, McPherson Co to Jacob & Lulu (Fulker) Muhlbeier. She attended Leola High School, where she graduated with the Class of 1943.

Mildred married Oliver Turnwall on October 11, 1943, at St. James Lutheran Church, Leola. They made their home on the family farm. Oliver died on June 7, 1970, and Mildred continued living on the farm until 1973. She taught Sunday School at St. James Lutheran Church. Mildred worked in the kitchen at Hub City Livestock Sales Barn in Aberdeen for twenty-one years.

She was the president of Senior Citizens for nine years and a member of two bridge clubs.

Grateful for having shared Mildred’s life are her daughters, Carmel Heyd, Aberdeen; Susan (Don) Hoffman, Leola; step daughters, Karen Vietmeier, Phoenix, AZ; Judy (Robert) Krammer, InverGrove Heights, MN; step sons, Dwight (Peggy) Vietmeier, St. Paul, MN; Tim (Julie) Vietmeier, Cottage Grove, MN; sisters, Alice Wolff, Bowdle, SD; Florence (Ben) Geffre, Aberdeen; granddaughter, Kristi (Michael) Bockorny; three great grandchildren, Matthew, Connor, and Emily Bockorny; and nine step grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Oliver Turnwall; son, Thomas Oliver Turnwall; second husband, Arden Vietmeier; sisters, Lillian Howell; Clara Fischer; and son-in-law, Ronald Heyd.
