ALLEN JOACHIM

The service for Allen Joachim, 87, Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Friday, December 12, 2008 at North Highland United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Ehrmantraut officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Allen died Monday, December 8, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Thursday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Allen Joachim was born January 4, 1921, to Phillip and Barbara (Sayler) Theurer at Eureka, SD. He grew up and attended school in this area.

He married Violet Ebel on June 12, 1955, at Medina, ND. He attended Moler Barber College in Fargo, ND. He barbered for a while at Clark and Mobridge. Allen and his wife lived in Lemmon and Mobridge managing motels until they moved to Aberdeen in 1959, where he worked for Montgomery Wards and later worked at Northern States College until he retired in 1983. He was a member of the Aberdeen Wesleyan Church where he played the organ prelude for many years.

He enjoyed playing the organ and piano and many instruments and was well known for his music.

Grateful for having shared Allen’s life are his wife, Violet; two daughters, Debbie (Duane) Clark, La Moure, ND; Darla (David) Anderson, Webster, SD; grandchildren, Bethany Clark; Anthony Clark; Dawson Anderson; and Dessa Anderson.

He is preceded in death by his parents; step father; step brothers; and step sister.

SISTER PATRICIA ANN MURPHY

Sister Patricia Ann Murphy, 76, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died December 7, 2008 at Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen, SD.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Patricia Ann will be Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 11:00 a.m., in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held Wednesday, December 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Reverend John McMullen, OSB, pastor at Wilmot, SD, will be the celebrant and homilist.

Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S Main Street, in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Ann (known as Sister Vivian 1951 to 1966) was born December 31, 1931 at Elrod, SD to Gertrude T. (Becking) and Frank J. Murphy. She graduated from Summit High School in 1950. Patricia Ann entered Presentation Convent September 8, 1950 and made her first profession of vows August 10, 1953.

Sister earned a two-year teaching certificate at Presentation College and then a bachelor of science degree in education from Northern State University in1969. She began teaching at St. Theresa School in Huron. She also ministered in teaching at Presentation Children’s Home in Sioux Falls, St. Stephen’s in Bridgewater, Holy Family in Mitchell, Sacred Heart in Miles City, MT, St. Mary’s in Sioux Falls and St. Peter’s in Jefferson. Other work included training CCD teachers, visiting hospitals, doing Search programs, and a CCD program at the air base in Glasgow, MT. Sister Pat received her clinical pastoral education (CPE) at St. Gregory’s in Milwaukee, WI. She earned a Master’s degree in theology from Aquinas College, Grand Rapids, MI.

Sister Patricia Ann is survived by her community of Presentation Sisters; two sisters, Dorothy Meyer, Wilmot, SD; Maureen (Ron) Rysso, Grayling, MI and a brother Francis (Marlene) Murphy, Milbank, SD. She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Colette (Lawrence)Weyh, and one brother, Bob Murphy.

Nephews will serve as casket bearers.

Vivian Agnes Mehlhoff

Vivian Agnes Mehlhoff, 71, of Aberdeen began her eternal life with Christ on December 5, 2008. She died peacefully in her own home with her husband at her side.

Her funeral will be 10:30 am on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. Pastor Tanya Rist will officiate. Burial will immediately follow the service at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

Visitation will be Monday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home in Aberdeen from 2-7 pm. Family will be present from 5-7pm. The visitation will conclude with a prayer service at 7 pm.

Vivian was born May 23, 1937 in Leola to Christ and Frieda (Rueb) Schell. She attended country school in the Leola area and later obtained her GED. She was married to her lifelong husband, Milbert W. Mehlhoff, on October 3, 1954. They were blessed with four children: Thomas, Nancy, Sharon, and Timothy.

Vivian was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her deepest loves were her faith and her family. Vivian enjoyed being a housewife and a mother, raising her family, cooking, baking, entertaining, decorating, sewing, reading, and hosting Bible studies in her home. She especially cherished weekends with her family at their lake home and sharing time with her friends. Vivian had a smile and warmth about her that would light up a room. Anyone who truly knew her appreciated the love and joy her heart always held. Her daily life gave evidence to the fact that she lived God's Word and followed His guidance. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have known her.

In addition to being a fulltime homemaker, Vivian was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she held many offices and committees. She was involved in the regional Christian’s Women’s Club speaking, singing and serving in various positions including Chairperson. She also volunteered at the local hospital and held part time employment at Aberdeen Public Schools.

Vivian is survived by her husband, Milbert, of Aberdeen; her children: Thomas (Janet) Mehlhoff of Houston, and their children Eric, Grant, and Jessie; Nancy (Craig) Gardner of Denver, and their children Matthew and Nathan; Sharon (James) Dunkel of Fargo and their children Steven and Isaac; Timothy (Rebecca) Mehlhoff of Grand Forks, and their children Kelsey, Jacob, and Brooke; sister Lila Kraemer of Aberdeen; and countless friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Curtis Schell; and two sisters, Delores Hoffman and Marjorie Sopata.

Casket bearers will be Vivian’s beloved grandchildren.

Dean Driscoll

A memorial service for Dean Driscoll will be held on Friday, December 5th at 11:00 a.m. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Dean was born December 17, 1921 in St. Charles, South Dakota and passed away on Friday, November 28th in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dean married Beverly Grover on September 14, 1946 in Aberdeen. They resided in Aberdeen, Cleveland, Ohio, Sedona, Arizona and Sun City, Arizona. Dean moved to Maplewood, MN in August 2007 to be near his children. He was a life long supporter of Aberdeen having served as a city commissioner and in other community capacities. Dean will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, strong faith and love of family.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, brother, wife, son and grandson. He is survived by son, Tom Driscoll of Bloomington, MN, daughters Sue (Bob) Pearson of White Bear Township, MN, Mary Driscoll of Woodbury, MN, and six grandsons.

JAMES M. ZIEGLER

Funeral services for James M. Ziegler, 86, Aberdeen, are 10:30am, Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at First United Methodist Church, 502 S. Lincoln St. with Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Burial following at Riverside Memorial Park. James died Saturday, at ManorCare Health Services.

Visitation: 1-7pm, with family present from 5-7pm, Tuesday, December 2, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

James M. Ziegler was born on February 4, 1922 to Curtis Clayton and Mary (Fisher) Ziegler at Aberdeen, SD. He grew up and attended rural schools in the Aberdeen area and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1938. James attended Northern State Teachers College from 1940 to 1942. He sang in the a cappella choir and lettered in football. James was also active in various other campus organizations. In 1942, he went to San Diego, CA where he worked for a time at Ryan Aircraft as an apprentice tool maker. James returned to Mercier Township to farm. He was a baseball catcher and played for Mina and Aberdeen Teams. James also organized and managed a boys baseball team in Mercier Township and Mina.

On February 10, 1951, James married Kathlyn Mary Ziegler at the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, SD. They continued to live on the farm where James continued to work until his retirement in 1992.

James was a member of First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge. James was previously a director of the Mina Equity Exchange. He was also a school board Member and Mercier Township Board Member and was active in Mercier Community Club. James was also on the Brown County Weed Board and was past secretary of the National Farmers Organization.

Grateful for having shared James’ life are his two sons, James C. (Janice) Ziegler of Aberdeen, SD, Ronald L. (Kathy Pingel) Ziegler of Des Moines, IA; one daughter, MaryLyn (Andrew) Crosier of Canton, MI; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

James was preceded in death by his wife, Kathlyn, his parents, two brothers, Dale and John, two sisters-in-law, Mildred and Genevieve, and one niece, Nola.

LAVERA NAOMI RALL

Services for LaVera Rall, 85, Aberdeen are 10:30am, Thursday, December 4, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church, Pastor Marcia Sylvester officiating. Burial is at Ashley Lutheran Cemetery, Ashley, ND. LaVera passed away Thursday, November 20, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen.

Visitation: 1-7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, December 3rd, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S Main St., Aberdeen.

LaVera Naomi Rath was born on May 2, 1923 at Long Lake, SD, to John and Ida Gugel Rath. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Leola High School with the class of 1941. She then attended Northern State College in Aberdeen where she received her teaching certificate. On Sept. 20, 1945, she married Jacob Rall at Long Lake, SD. They made their home on a farm in McPherson County near Forbes, ND. She taught school in McPherson County for 15 years. On August 1, 1969, they moved to Aberdeen where she worked for Control Data for three and a half years. She then worked for Kopecky Reality for 6 years and then went to work for Independent Well Drilling for 6 years. Mr. Rall died August 12, 1984, at Minneapolis, MN. LaVera continued to make her home in Aberdeen. She was a resident at Avera Mother Joseph Manor at the time of her death. Last May, she was especially pleased and surprised with her 85th birthday party at the ice cream parlor, one of her favorite places.

LaVera was actively involved with (RSVP) Retired Senior Volunteer Program and volunteered her time and talent to help others in the schools and other agencies within the Aberdeen Community. She enjoyed visiting with her friends and family and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Memorials will go for scholarships for children who attend the church pre-school program.

Grateful for having shared LaVera’s life are her brother, Robert and (Edith) Rath, Aberdeen; sisters Evangeline and (Reinhold) Schumacher, Eureka, Leone Armantrout, St. Louis MO, and Rebecca and (Jerry) Pike Georgetown TX; all her nieces and nephews, and all of the Rath and Rall families.

LEONA VILHAUER

Funeral services for Leona Vilhauer, 83, Aberdeen will be 2 pm, Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Aberdeen Christian Fellowship, 214 1st Ave. SE with Pastor Jon Droege officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Leona died on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Sioux Falls.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Friday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Leona Brandner was born at Eureka, SD to Albert & Pauline (Walker) Brandner. She grew up and attended rural school south of Long Lake, SD. On June 11, 1944, she married her childhood sweetheart, Elyard Vilhauer. In 1950, they bought the Fred Leichs farm south of Long Lake.

She was a hard worker side by side with her husband. In 1989, they moved to Aberdeen, when Elyard’s health failed. Elyard died March of 2002.

Leona was a member of the Ashley, ND Assembly of God Church. After moving to Aberdeen, She became a member of Aberdeen Christian Fellowship. She loved to entertain people. Leona had church groups at her house for fourteen years. She enjoyed making quilts for the family. Leona loved reading her Bible and spending time with God. Leona was a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital. She loved being able to take care of her granddaughter, Brittany Webb.

Grateful for having shared Leona’s life are her sons, Leo (Ruthie) Vilhauer, Leola; Paul (Hazel) Vilhauer, Berthoud, CO; daughter, Arlene (Dale) Webb-Stanley, Aberdeen; grandchildren, Deb (David) Heyd; Deon (Renae) Vilhauer; Tracy (Chad) Reiman; Troy (Heidi) Vilhauer; Mike (Erin Dosch) Webb; Jeff Webb; Greg (Melissa Kessler) Webb; Danny Webb; Amber Joy Webb; great grandchildren, Jakob; Isabella; Delaney; Dawson; Brooks; Rilee; Halle; Brittany; David; Dylan; Destiny; Brayden; Breah; and Liberty.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.

SISTER ZITA HUGHES

Sister Zita Hughes, 96, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died November 24, 200­­8 at Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.

The funeral for Sister Zita will be Friday, November 28, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD. A Scriptural Wake service will be Thursday, November 27 at 7:00 p.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Reverend Joseph Sheehan will be celebrant and homilist.

Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S Main Street, Aberdeen, in charge of arrangements.

Marian Hughes was born December 12, 1911 at LeMars, IA, to Elizabeth Anna (Welter) and Simon P Hughes. She attended elementary school in the area and later received her GED High School Certificate. She entered Presentation Convent on December 28, 1940 and made her first profession of vows August 12, 1943. She completed various adult education studies at Central High School in Aberdeen, received a certificate from the National Executive Housekeepers Association in Indiana, 1964. She also completed workshops at St. Louis University in 1957 and 1962, Creighton University, Omaha in 1971 and McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, in 1977.

Sister Zita ministered at St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen in the dietary department from 1943 to 1948. Later from 1949 to 1998 she again worked at St. Luke’s in the Housekeeping and E.K.G. departments. Before formally retiring she worked as a volunteer at the information and reception desk. In 1998 she came to the Motherhouse in Aberdeen and then to Mother Joseph Manor in 2005. Sister Zita made many friends in Aberdeen and will be missed by her brother, sisters, and many nieces and nephews.

Sister Zita is survived by her community family of Presentation Sisters, five sisters; Martha Truhe, Leone Rector, Nora VanVerth, Delores Garrod, Ann Nichols and one brother: Simon Hughes. She is preceded in death by her parents, a sister (Rita Bourassa), and a brother (Francis Hughes).

Members of the Aberdeen Knights of Columbus will served as casket bearers.
