Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. Mary died Saturday, November, 15, at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.

A gathering to honor her life will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Aberdeen. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.

Mary’s life journey was long, winding and filled with adventure. She was born to Theodore and Mary Dzik on March 8, 1922 in Scranton, PA, the sixth of eight children. She revealed her unconventional nature early, playing high school basketball long before Title IX and later joining a local womens’ exhibition team nicknamed the “Yoo Hoo Girls – Basketball’s Famous Female Attraction” that played both men’s and women’s teams.

Upon graduation from high school, she worked for Lakawana Pants Company sewing khaki uniform pants for enlisted World War II soldiers. She received vocational training in the evenings and then worked as an accountant at the Scranton Electric Company while caring for her invalid mother in the family home.

Five years later when her mother died, she loaded up her Buick and hit the road, bound for California. During a stop in Minneapolis to visit a friend, she fell in love with the Land of 10,000 Lakes and secured a job as a customer service representative for Minnesota Power. She then met James, the man who became her husband of 36 years. After marrying, they moved to Milbank and later to Aberdeen where they raised three daughters.

Mary was a traveler of back roads; a baker of pies; a seamstress and knitter; a lover of animals; a Sunday School and summer Bible school teacher; a fearsome bowler and a loving wife and mother. She reveled in being a full-time mom, ferrying her girls to city parks, swimming ponds and anyplace else they could enjoy the seasons. Above all, she loved nothing more than getting her hands into some rich, black dirt. Her tomatoes and strawberry jams filled the canning jars each growing season.

Mary was a member of the Aberdeen Elkettes, the Order of the Eastern Star, First United Methodist Church and several area bowling leagues.

Her salty humor, free spirit, optimism and love of life will be forever remembered and emulated by those she leaves behind.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents, Theodore and Mary; her brothers, William, Mike, John, Andrew and sister, Helen Dzik.

Grateful to have shared her life are her three daughters: Mary Gravelle (Rich Anderson) of Aberdeen; Julie Gravelle (Arthur McKee) of Polson, Montana; Kathy (Chris) O’ Donnell of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; sister Julie Spinelli of Mountainside, New Jersey; brother Joseph (Emelia) Dzik of Scanton; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations as memorials to the Aberdeen Area Humane Society at P.O. Box 1013, Aberdeen, SD.
