JIM JANSEN
Funeral services for Jim Jansen, 65, Columbia, are 10:30 am, Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, with Pastor Marcia Sylvester officiating.
Visitation: 2-7 pm Monday, November 17, at the funeral home with family present from 5-7 pm.
Jim Jansen was born on September 2, 1943, on his parent’s farm in Staples, MN – where he lived his entire childhood with his two sisters and three brothers. As a child he was actively involved in 4-H, showing cattle, and high school wrestling. After high school, he moved to Minneapolis to work in his trade as a tool machinist. While living in Minneapolis, he met and married Barb, and together they opened their own machine shop. In 1970, he moved with his wife and two daughters to Columbia, SD.
His decision to move to Columbia was a deliberate one, because it landed him within 8 miles of the Sand Lake Wildlife Refuge. He was an avid outdoorsman, as he loved to hunt; pheasants, geese, deer, antelope, turkey, and more. He got hours and hours of enjoyment from driving through the refuge observing the wildlife and counting the deer.
After moving to Columbia, Jim owned and operated his own semi-truck for most of his life, until April 2008 when his vision prevented him from driving his semi cross-country any longer. Despite these vision problems, he still believed he was going to get “back on the road”.
Jim was widely known for his gruff exterior, but gentle and generous heart. Without doubt, he was proudest of his two daughters, Vicki and Wendy, and their families ~ particularly, he greatly adored his grandchildren. He carried pictures of the grandchildren with him across the country, and was always asking for new pictures to keep with him. He loved talking and bragging about his family to anyone who would listen!
Grateful for having shared Jim’s life are his two daughters, Vicki (Scott) Deadrick, Waconia, MN, and Wendy (Michael) Simmermon, Colton, SD; sisters, Barb (Al) Langer, of Grand Forks, ND, and Pat (Cliff) Johnson, Plymouth, MN; brothers, John (Ruth) Jansen, Brainerd, MN, Jerry (Sharon) Jansen, Worthington, MN, and Jeff (Linda) Jansen, Shakopee, MN, and seven grandchildren: Lauren Deadrick, Sam Deadrick, Tanse (Tonya) Herrmann, Andrew Simmermon, Tim Simmermon, Nick Simmermon, and Makayla Simmermon.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
A man can become so accustomed to the thought of his own faults that he will begin to cherish them as charming little “personal characteristics”.
