Milo J. Wepking

HURON -- Milo J. Wepking, age 81, Huron, formerly of Colorado Springs, CO, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at his home of a heart attack.

His Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 3, at the First Presbyterian Church in Huron with Rev. Kevin Channell officiating and with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council.

The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Welter Funeral Home, Huron.

Milo J. Wepking was born on January 20, 1923, to Robert and Mary (Schmidt) Wepking at Avon, SD. He attended grade school and graduated from Avon High School. On March 11, 1943, Milo entered the United States Army and served in the European Theatre during World War II where he received two Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged on November 9, 1945, and returned to South Dakota to pursue his education.

On May 12, 1946, Milo married Barbara Erdmier in Shannon, IL. They moved to Springfield, SD, where he attended Southern State Teachers College and received his B.S. in Education. In 1955, he attended the University of South Dakota at Vermilion where he received his Masters Degree. During this time, he was director of Speech and Drama at Southern State Teachers College, and then attended the University of Minnesota where he worked towards his Doctorate. In the 1960s they moved to Sioux Falls where he was Director of Admissions at Nettleton College. In the 1980s they moved to Colorado Springs, CO, and for 20 years he was the Director and Regional Vice-President with National American University. Currently, he held the position of Senior Vice-President for Development with National American University. Milo was a football and basketball referee for 35 years, and an outstanding public speaker.

Milo was inducted into the South Dakota High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Shrine. He was a former commissioner of SDIC and had been inducted into the SDIC Hall of Fame.

He enjoyed golf, sports in general and especially his grandchildren. Milo and Barbara had recently moved to Huron.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; his children: Jill (Donald) Grogan of Fullerton, CA, Jeffrey (Monica) Wepking of Huron, and Jan (Michael) Thomas of Laguna Niguel, CA; and five grandchildren: Kelly Grogan, Nikki Cordell, Jonathan Wepking, Jennifer Wepking and Macall Thomas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund.

Norman Strom

BLOOMFIELD, Neb. -- Norman L. Strom died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Lundberg Memorial Hospital, Creighton, Neb., after a 9 1/2-month struggle with cancer at the age of 60 years, 4 months and 4 days.

Memorial services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Christ Memorial United Methodist Church, Bloomfield, Neb., with the Rev. Tim Pratt officiating. Organist is Deb Hoffman, and vocalists are Brian Peterson, and Kathy and Dave Olson. Hymns are "On Eagles Wings" and "Help Make It Rain."

Interment is in Bloomfield Cemetery with military honors by VFW Post No. 4996, Bloomfield, Neb.

Honorary pallbearers are Lonnie Strom, Curtis Strom, Merle Strom, Allen Strom, Daniel Strom and Wendell Strom. Special honorary pallbearers are Alexander Strom, Logan Strom, Chelsea Strom, Hali Strom, Elijah Strom and Hannah Strom.

Brockhaus-Scott Funeral Home, Bloomfield, is in charge of arrangements.

Norman Lee Strom was born January 12, 1944, in Bloomfield, Nebraska, to Lyle (Bud) and Judith (Johnson) Strom. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christ Memorial Methodist Church, Bloomfield. He attended grade school in rural District #115 School. Norman graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1962. He served in the U.S. Army from December 1962 until receiving his Honorable Discharge in April 1963 to assist on the family farm following his father's death.

On Sept. 19, 1964, Norm and Barbara Johnson were married at the Methodist church in Bloomfield, Neb. To this union, two children were born. Norm and Barb lived their married life in the Bloomfield area, the last 34 years on the family farm southwest of Bloomfield. The last three years, he was employed by the city of Bloomfield as a cemetery caretaker.

Norman was a lifelong member of the Methodist church. For many years he was president of the Central Township Board and served as a Board Member of Associated Milk Producers.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; sons, Todd and wife Jill of Crofton; Troy and wife Patty of Norfolk; grandchildren: Hali, Elijah, Hannah, Alexander, Logan and Chelsea; brothers, Allen Strom and wife Diane of Bradenton, Fla.; Curt Strom and Julie Chancey of Bloomfield; Dan Strom and wife Linda of Lynch; Merle Strom and wife Michele of Elk Point, SD; Wendell Strom and wife Delores of Crofton; sisters: Darla Jacob of Alcester, SD, and Janice Wells and husband Will of Blue Hill, Neb.; sister-in-law, Nancy Strom of Hastings; nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lonnie; sister-in-law, Peggy (Langemeier) Strom; father and mother-in-law, Allen and Elva Mae Johnson; and sister-in-law, Bev Gronewold.

Eva Catherine Hungate

McALLEN, Texas -- Eva Catherine Hungate, 84, of McAllen, Texas, returned to God's hands on May 13, 2004.

On May 27, 1919, God entrusted one of His angels to the care of George M. and Sufreney (Reandeau) Lanning of Wagner, SD. They named her Eva Catherine. Eva married Frank L. Hungate in January 1936, a union that lasted 64 years. She was an enthusiastic partner in life's adventures and particularly enjoyed fishing and hunting (pheasant, geese, grouse, deer and elk). A woman of many talents, she was especially known for her wonderful cooking/baking and gardening.

Eva contributed her efforts to World War II by painting battleships at the Vancouver, WA, shipyard. After the war, Frank and Eva spent eight years at Pickstown, SD, and 10 years in Yankton, SD. Eva loved to travel and was able to do so extensively as Frank finished out his career on the Minute Men Missiles. This resulted in numerous good friends spread throughout the U.S. After retirement, they made their summer home in Baudette, MN, for 25 years. Their winter home was initially in Arizona, later in Adobe Wells County Club in McAllen, TX. In 1999 (following Frank's passing), Eva moved to BriarCliff Nursing and Rehab Center. She made numerous friends among both staff and residents with her generous nature, quick wit and wonderful sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband Frank; and five brothers (Leo, Johnny, Georgie, Charles and Martin). She will be grieved and sorely missed by her devoted sister, Anne Verzani; her daughter, Jeanne Ann Hungate Johnson; her son-in-law, Dean A. Johnson; her grandson, Bradley D. Johnson; a great-grandson, Collin Sohn Johnson; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Wagner, SD. Burial is in the ZCBJ Cemetery, Wagner.

Harold D. Ketelsen

BLOOMFIELD, Neb. -- Harold D. Ketelsen, 70, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Faith Regional Hospital in Norfolk.

Services were Monday, May 17, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Bloomfield, Neb. The clergy was Rev. Tom Miller. Organist was Marion Schroeder, and vocalists were Mary Miller and Nancy Doerr. Hymns were "On Eagles Wings," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "What a Friend We have in Jesus."

Interment was in Bloomfield Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Justin Ketelsen, Jordan Ketelsen, Josie Ketelsen, Megan Ketelsen, Sidney Ketelsen, Jerrid Ketelsen, Jamie Ketelsen, Amanda Ketelsen, Chelsa Ketelsen and Jessica Ketelsen. Honorary pallbearers were Andrew Folck, Melvin Krueger, Morris Cavanaugh, Jim Haskin, Howard Moeller, Thomas Stephenson, Sten Eisenhauer, Terry Hagge and Ivan Abbott.

Harold Dean Ketelsen, son of Henry and Anna (Lemke) Ketelsen, was born January 6, 1934, at Bloomfield, Neb. He graduated from District 84 School south of Bloomfield. On December 24, 1954, he married Betty Trenhaile at Yankton, South Dakota. Four sons were born to them. After their marriage, Harold worked at the Gavin's Point Dam project. They then moved to Stanton where he worked for a cattle feeder, lived in California and worked for General Motors, lived at Redfield, SD, and worked on building grain elevators, then moved to St. Louis to work at McDonald Aircraft as a sheet metal worker. The family moved back to Bloomfield where Harold held many jobs: trucker, farm hand, feed and tire salesman, and owner of the Pleasant Valley Store. He worked for a time at Hydraulic Components at Hartington as a fabricator.

Harold was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Bloomfield, and the NFO. He enjoyed snagging, fishing, hunting, playing cards and visiting with neighbors.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; sons and their spouses: Jeff and Sylvia of Norfolk; Jody and Sandy of Carroll; Jim and Diane of Garland; and Jon and Wendy of Wausa; grandchildren: Justin and his wife Melissa; Jerrid, Josie, Amanda, Megan Chelsa; Sydney; Jordan; Jamie and Jessica.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Carol Young

LAKE ANDES -- Carol Young, 65, Lake Andes, died Saturday (May 15, 2004) at her home in rural Lake Andes.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Yankton Sioux Tribe Youth Center, Wagner. Burial is in Hill Church Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Dante.

Wake services began Monday at the youth center.

Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Wagner, is in charge of arrangements.

Esther E. Lewis

CENTERVILLE -- Esther E. Lewis, 86, Centerville, died Saturday (May 15, 2004) in the nursing home in Centerville.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Federated United Church of Christ in Centerville, SD. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Wass Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Esther Lewis was born February 25, 1918, in Ewing, Mo., to parents Mox and Nannie (Bywaters) Logdson. She died May 15, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Centerville at the age of 86 years, two months and 20 days.

Esther was raised and attended school in Centerville after moving from Missouri at the age of two. She married Arling DuBois in 1934 and together they farmed and had eight children. In 1968, Esther married Ray Lewis. They moved with their daughter, Dawn, to Pennsylvania where they lived for 14 years.

In 1984, they returned to Centerville and continued to live there until Esther's death. Esther had a love for country music; she enjoyed attending concerts of various artists. She liked to bake and in her younger years, Esther liked dancing.

Esther is survived by her husband, Ray Lewis; seven children: Dale (Barbara) DuBois of Lennox; Donald (Carol Ann) DuBois of Mitchell; Donna (Monte) Zuck of Oklahoma City, OK; Diana Wheatley of Centerville; Richard (Linda) DuBois of Beresford; Gary (Debbie) DuBois of Vermillion; and Dawn (Larry) Hansen of Centerville; 16 grandchildren; four step-grandsons; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Arling, and one infant daughter, Arlene Faye "Susie" DuBois.

Lawrence O. Burrell

VERMILLION -- Lawrence O. Burrell, 86, Vermillion, died Sunday (May 16, 2004) at Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital, Vermillion.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 21, 2004, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion, with the Rev. Judith Johnson officiating. Burial is in the Meckling Cemetery, Meckling, SD.

Visitation is from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, with the family present from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion.

Lawrence was born July 1, 1917, at Jefferson, SD, to Philip and Mary (Montagne) Burrell. He attended and graduated from Elk Point High School. He worked in the Electric Department for 30 years, for the City of Vermillion as a superintendent. He also farmed for seven years in the Jefferson area and worked in the shipyards in California during World War II.

He married Clara Irene Ahrendt on May 31, 1941, in Las Vegas, Nev. She died April 19, 1997.

He is survived by four daughters: Beverly (Gary) Messler of Hanover Park, IL; Linda (Paul) Ray of St. Charles, Mo.; Laurel Dunham of Sioux Falls; and Delores (Tom) Jones of Greer, S.C.; one sister, Blanche Gregory of Vermillion; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Mary (Montagne) Burrell and his wife, Clara I. Burrell.

Adeline Vinatieri

LAS VEGAS -- Adeline C. Vinatieri, age 96, of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Yankton, died Friday, December 12, 2003, at the TLC Care Center, Henderson, Nevada.

Inurnment and graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004, in the Yankton Cemetery with the Reverend Nelson Stone officiating. The Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Adeline was born on January 2, 1907, on a farm in Hankinson, North Dakota to immigrant parents, William and Theresa (Syccora) Klar. She was the second youngest child in a family with 11 children. She and her sisters were responsible for milking the family cows, but she was deathly afraid of the horses. After finishing high school she moved to Mankato, Minnesota where she worked for Montgomery Wards for 10 years selling hardware. She met her husband, Villiet (Bill) Vinatieri, at Montgomery Wards where he repaired the plumbing. After their marriage and Villiet's stint in the Navy during the WWII, they moved to Yankton, South Dakota where Villiet (a Master plumber) joined his father and brother in running the local plumbing shop. Adeline and Villiet produced two boys, John and James. Adeline also helped out at the plumbing shop on occasion. Adeline remained in Yankton until she was 90 when she moved to Las Vegas to live with her son.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, John and Peggy Vinatieri of Las Vegas, Nevada; and James and Nadine Vinatieri of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and one sister, Irene Vogt of Granite Falls, Minnesota.

Her parents; husband, Bill Vinatieri; six brothers; and three sisters preceded her in death.

Ryan (Blue) Dowling

PLAINVIEW, Neb. -- Services for Ryan "Blue" Dowling, 31, Lincoln, formerly of Plainview, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 3, at Our Savior Lutheran Church here. Burial will be in the Randolph Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Ashburn Funeral Home in Plainview.

He died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

The son of Robert and Ruth Dowling was born March 22, 1973. He was baptized on May 7, 1973, and confirmed June 14, 1987, both at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Plainview. He attended school in Plainview and graduated from Plainview High School in 1991. He then attended Northeast Community College in Norfolk in pursuit of a business degree.

He married Amy Rader in June 1997. The couple later divorced. He was employed as a certified welder at Catalina Iron in Lincoln at the time of his death.

Blue was involved in racing at Kartwheels Speedway in Norfolk most every weekend.

His life was his son, he so loved four-wheeling with Brock (his son).

Blue enjoyed tinkering and fixing any kind of motor at a very young age. He could fix anything put in front of him. With three older sisters, he kept very busy. He worked with his father at Central Oil & Tire for many years, they were a team. As a team they could be found every weekend at Kartwheels race way. The team's theme was the Checkered flags which Blue carried around the track many times. Blue's love of the races kept the team very busy. When visiting his parents, Blue could be found in his mother's kitchen cooking; they loved to share his recipes, and the time they spent cooking together. Everywhere Blue went, he knew someone. He loved to travel with family and friends.

Survivors include his son, Brock John Dowling, 7, of Plainview; his parents, Robert and Ruth Dowling of Yankton, S.D.; and three sisters, Tammy Zautke of Yankton, Sherry Dowling of Plainview and Kelly Behnke of Tea, S.D.; one grandfather Walter Starkel of Randolph;

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Orval and Mildred Dowling; grandmother Alice Starkel (recently passing in March) and a great-grandmother, Sarah Lily Wagner.

Blue's smile and talents will be missed by many friends and family.
