Dorothy Ellen Roth was born at rural Mansfield, SD on February 28, 1916 to Calvin and Mary Elizabeth (Young) Roth. She was born at 11:00pm so she was almost a Leap Year baby. Dorothy was raised on a farm two miles west of Scatterwood Cemetery on the south end of Scatterwood Lake. Dorothy attended grade school, which was right across the road from her house, and it was called the “Roth” school. Dorothy attended New Hope High School, which was 10 miles west of Warner and a mile south. A neighbor man, Gale Finley, who was going to be the professor, lived only three miles from the Roth family, so he said that he would pick them up. Of course Dorothy and her sister Vivian were thrilled. Dorothy loved school and even took a grade over again, just so she could be in school. In later years, Dorothy babysat for welfare children for ten years, babies being her favorite. As soon as a child would be adopted out, we would get another one. When her own kids started to have children, she started babysitting for them. She also took in other people’s children, for the word got around that she was a good care giver. In later years, she even watched her great grandson Kyle. Dorothy was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church being started in the Monroe Junior High School. She served on different committees, and was on the Altar Society Committee for years, plus the Welfare Committee. She helped serve at many dinners, and luncheon’s that were given. For ten years, Dorothy was the Secretary Treasurer for the church bowling league, which she really enjoyed and did a good job at. She always made sure we had special gatherings for birthdays, holidays, picnics, and other events where the family would all get together. She loved to go camping with Ken and whoever else would join them. They traveled to the West Coast several times and up into Canada. On those trips they would set up a tent, which they got pretty good at. The rest of the time they would use their camper. A lot of times they would take the grandkids with them and of course the kids loved the campfires, outdoors, and fishing. One of our favorite trips was with the whole family meeting up in Canada, each in their own camper. A daughter Sharon Schock and her husband Jim drove from Oregon; a son Darwin Shilman and his wife Gale came from Washington; two daughters Donna and Louis Weber; plus Beverly and Dean Zimmerman from Aberdeen. There were nine grandchildren, so with the grown-ups, there were nineteen in all. We met in Canada, and the five campers followed each other going west to Lake Louise and the Ice Fields. While up there, Ken and Dorothy celebrated their 40th anniversary.

Dorothy was married to Kenneth Shilman on August 20, 1938 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church parsonage, in Aberdeen, by Rev. Graeber. They lived in Aberdeen all of their lived in a house on North State St. and then on 2nd Ave. NE, where they raised their family. Kenneth passed away on August 23, 1994.

Grateful for having shared Dorothy’s life are her two daughters, Donna (Louis) Weber of Aberdeen, SD and Beverly (Dean) Zimmerman of Aberdeen, a son-in-law, Jim Schock of Eugene, OR, and a daughter-in-law, Gale Shilman of Yakima, WA. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Tracy (Chad) Speidel of Aberdeen, Scott (Bekki) Weber, of Australia, Keith (LaNae) Weber of Walford, IA, Glenn (Liz) Shilman of Kent, WA, Steve (Ann) Shilman of Belleuve, WA, Rhonda (Brian) Doherty of Rapid City, SD, David (Jen) Zimmerman of Aberdeen, Michelle (Mark) Groth of Coos Bay, OR, and Mike Schock of California. There are thirteen great grandchildren: Kyle Weber and Taylor Speidel of Aberdeen, Gage and Braden Weber of Iowa, Sierra, Savannah, and Kaden Doherty of Rapid City, SD, Natalie and Austin Groth of Oregon, Madeline Zimmerman of Aberdeen, Quinn and Andrew Shilman of Washington, and Katie Shilman of Washington. There are three step-great grandchildren, Tanner Speidel of Rapid City, SD and David and Paul McNamara of Australia.

Shilman, mother, Mary Elizabeth (Young) Roth and father, Calvin Roth, a daughter Sharon Schock and a son Darwin Shilman, two brothers: Gerald and Reynold Roth, and five sisters: Mary Eudora Peterson, Etta Harbough, Mildred Mansfield, Ora Roth and Vivian Brick.
