JAMES A. WYLY

The service for James Allen Wyly, 70, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Friday, March 13, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Ed Pierce officiating. Burial at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. James died Tuesday, March 10, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation is 1-7pm, Thursday, with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

James Allen Wyly was born in Hereford, Texas, on March 4, 1939. He was the eldest of four children born to Iva Watters Wyly and Wilson Wyly. The Wyly family moved from Texas, to Ft. Pierre, South Dakota in 1951 where they established a family cattle-ranch operation. James graduated from Pierre High school in 1957. He then attended Abilene Christian College, Abilene, Texas before returning to the ranch at Fort Pierre where he joined his father and brother Mack.

In 1965 he left the ranch to complete his undergraduate degree in political science at the University of South Dakota. graduating with honors in 1967. He was awarded a fellowship to Harvard University where in 1971 he earned a Masters Degree in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government. Thereafter, he completed a Law Degree from Harvard Law School.

Following graduation from Harvard University, Mr. Wyly joined the law firm of Richardson, Groseclose, and Kornmann in Aberdeen, SD, later becoming a partner in the firm which is now Richardson, Wyly, Wise, Sauck, and Hieb. Altogether, he practiced with the firm for 38 years.

Mr. Wyly served as a president of South Dakota State Young Democrats as well as chairman of the Brown County Democrat Committee. He also was a member of the Brown County and South Dakota Bar Associations.

He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Wyly, his son, Cameron Wyly (Kristie Schnabel Wyly) and their two sons, James Allen Wyly and Hunter Wyly of Aberdeen; his daughter, Ann Wyly Gregory (Casey Gregory), of Phoenix, AZ; his stepchildren Allen Gates (Sheila) and Jennifer Whitam (John) of Farmington, MN; his mother Iva Wyly Russell, brothers Mack and Bill Wyly; sister Donna Wyly Crow, all from the Pierre/Ft. Pierre area. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilson Wyly.

His interests were many and wide ranging, as evidenced by three lifelong leisure-time activities --- reading, reading, and reading. He always enjoyed a lively debate, happy times with his family and many friends, afternoons on his cattle ranch, flying, vacations at Lake Vermilion in northern Minnesota, travel, and sharing a mutually joy-filled life with the love of his life, his wife, Priscilla.

In lieu of flowers family prefers memorials.

RICHARD W. “DICK” NIEBUHR

The funeral service for Richard W. “Dick” Niebuhr, 64, of Aberdeen, will be 3:00pm, Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, SD. Dick died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation is 1-7pm, Friday, March 13, with family present from 5-7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Richard William “Dick” Niebuhr was born on July 7, 1944 to Vernon and Mildred (Miner) Niebuhr in Sioux City, IA. He was raised and attended school in Huron, SD, graduating from Huron High School. Dick attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD for his undergraduate degree. He then did his graduate work with a paid fellowship at Rice University in Houston, TX. Dick received the Hapsburg Scholarship from the Austrian Government to work on his PhD. dissertation in European History, studying in Vienna, Austria. After receiving his Degree, Dick taught at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, Arkansas. He then moved to Aberdeen in late 1973 and opened a stock brokerage office for John G. Kinnard and Co. In June of 1979, Dick and Craig Golz became partners and opened the Aberdeen office of A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. Dick continued to co-manage the office with Craig until the time of his death.

Dick was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and served on the Board of Pensions for the American Lutheran Church. Over the years, Dick was very active in public life. He chaired various Chamber of Commerce Boards, served on the Board of Directors at Moccasin Creek Country Club, the Board of Directors for the South Dakota Heritage Society, the Northern State University Foundation Board, the Board of Directors of Presentation College and the Board of Regents of Augustana College. He was a former NSU professor and a founding sponsor of the Berggrem Gala. Dick founded the Mildred Niebuhr Scholarship at Augustana College. He was elected to Chairman’s Council at A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. and was a Premier Advisor at Wachovia Securities.

Dick had a love for life and lived it to the fullest. He had a passion for music and art. Dick loved traveling, enjoyed cooking, and entertaining his friends and family. He had an extensive library and cherished reading, especially history. Dick was also a life master of the American Contract Bridge League.

Grateful for having shared Dick’s life are his brothers, Robert (Lee) Niebuhr of Great Falls, MT and James Niebuhr of Costa Mesa, CA, his niece Lisa Niebuhr of Minneapolis, MN, and nephew, Rob Niebuhr of Boseman, MT.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Mildred Niebuhr.

RUTH SMITH

Services for Ruth Smith, 88, Aberdeen, are 10am, Thursday, March 12, at First United Methodist Church, Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Inurrnment at Wayside Cemetery, Frederick at a later date. Ruth died Sunday at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Visitation: 1-7pm, Wednesday, prayer service at 7pm, Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

Ruth Elizabeth Haug was born January 4, 1921 to Krist and Amy (Johnson) Haug at Frederick. Ruth had a twin brother, Ralph Haug. They lived on a farm and attended country grade school. They moved to Frederick and ran Haug’s Café for a number of years. After graduating from Frederick High School in 1939, she attended Aberdeen Business College. She worked for Anderson Supply and later became a bookkeeper at Paisley Auto Supply. Ruth was secretary for Aberdeen Credit Bureau and a member of Credit Women Breakfast Club.

On January 7, 1953 she married Allan Smith at Aberdeen. They moved to Frederick and she adopted Allan’s children and had a son, Randy who was born in 1955. Allan’s first wife, Marian, was killed in a car accident. Allan had the Brown County News Paper, and later started the Hecla Independent, so life was very active and busy.

After Allan passed away, Ruth had the paper for five years, before selling her home in Frederick and moving to Aberdeen. She began working at Edward Jones on November 8, 1978, retiring on December 15, 1998.

She attended the Methodist Church, where they were active in Sunday School. Ruth was involved with Cub Scouts, President of the P.T.A., President of Methodist Ladies, and a member of Alpha Circle, and member of S.D. Press Association.

Grateful for having shared Ruth’s life are her children, Kathryn (Doug) Nelson, Mankato, MN; Richard (Pamela) Smith, Cordillera, CO; Stephanie (Thomas) Zerfas, Aberdeen; Randall (Trudi) Smith, Wahpeton, ND; grandchildren, Sara (David) Williams, Matthew Nelson, Brittany Smith, Linsey Smith, Joshua Zerfas; Meghan (Ty) Edwards, Kristi “Kiki” Smith, Allison Smith, Ryan Smith, great granddaughter, Addyson Edwards.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers, Arnold Haug, Gerald “Swede” Haug, and Ralph Haug.

HAROLD F. MILLARD

The funeral service for Harold F. Millard, 85, of Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses with John Gasco officiating. Harold died Tuesday, March 3, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

A time to sign the register book and see the Celebration of Life video will be from 10am-noon, Saturday, March 7, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

Harold Frank Millard was born November 5, 1923, to Frank and Lucinda (Nesbitt) Millard on the family farm. He attended rural schools and graduated from Mina High School. Harold married Rose Ellen Draper on June 2, 1945. They made their home at Mina Lake on the family farm.

They have two children: a daughter; Linda Kay, born June 16, 1947 (married Guynn Paul Peterson) living in Scottsdale, AZ. A son, Eugene Herbert “Herb” born September 9, 1948 (married Diane Martha Weyer) and had five grandchildren: Tracy Marie Millard, married David Wykoff and have two children – Sara Michelle and Michael Eugene of Aberdeen. Troy Allen Millard married Kellie Bereth and has two daughters; Gabrielle Lee Millard of Fredrick and Michaela “Kayla” Rose Odegaard-Millard of Aberdeen. Teri Lynn Millard married Tony Bienvenu and have four children; Shayna Mackenzie, Taylor Bradden, Tanner Braxton and Shania Rhayne of Aberdeen. Tasha Lea Briggs-Millard has three sons; Darron Duvaughn, Xavior Malakai and Braxton Matix of Aberdeen. Darwin Dement and wife Pauline of Oceanside, CA.

He was preceded in death by one brother Pete, one sister Louise “Millie” Schwan and his parents. His wife Rose resides in Aberdeen at the Aberdeen Health and Rehab Center.

MERLE GOLDIN

The funeral service for Merle Goldin, 93, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Monday, May 4, 2009 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, with Pastor Vicki Saude-Worthington officiating. Merle died Wednesday, April 29, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Sunday with family present from 5-7pm.

Merle Marie Olson was born October 29, 1915 at Stratford, SD to Tyler & Mayme (Mathieu) Olson. This is the area where she grew up and attended school.

On March 1, 1936 Merle married Lewis Goldin at Groton, SD. They purchased a farm near Stratford in 1940. Merle worked in the home and took care of their two children, Gwenneth & Gaylon. In 1947 they moved to Oregon where they ranched for a short time, then moved back to the Stratford in the fall of 1948

Merle was a member of Kings Daughters & Sons in Conde, Hub City Sams, and Rebekah Lodge #158 in Stratford. Merle & Lewis loved to travel together. Their travels included Europe, Canada, Mexico and Alaska. They spent their winters down South, until Lewis passed away on August 14, 1999.

Grateful for having shared Merle’s life are her daughter, Gwenneth (Richard) Jackson; son, Gaylon (Gayle) Goldin; grandchildren, Col. Korey (Tana) Jackson; Kerry Jackson; Kraig (Jennifer Dangel) Jackson; Lori (Scott) DeBane; Col. Pamela Stahl; Rachelle Goldin; great grandchildren, Katrina, Matthew, Bethany, Thomas, Sarah, Desa, Devan, & Darian.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Clara Smith.

Honorary casket bearers are all of Merle’s beloved grandchildren.

BELLEST “BILL” NERLAND

The funeral service for Bellest “Bill” Nerland, 73, Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Saturday, May, 2, 2009 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Bill passed away Wednesday, April 29, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Friday, with family present from 5-7pm and a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Bellest Kenneth Nerland was born May 23, 1935 in Langford to Harry & Clara (Snortland) Nerland. He grew up on a farm near Langford. He attended rural schools. He graduated from Langford High School in 1953. He was baptized and confirmed at Falnes Lutheran Church. Bill entered the Army on October 28, 1953. He was honorably discharged from the Army on September 30, 1961.

He married Lois Bonn on June 20, 1958 at Groton. After their marriage they moved to Milbank, where Bill started Nerland Oil Company. He was in the bulk fuel oil business in Granite Falls, MN, Ashton, SD, and Nerland Oil Company in Aberdeen when he retired. Bill was also in the trucking business for many years. He was diagnosed with cancer July, 2008.

Bill was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Aberdeen where he served on various board committees and was a member for forty-three years of the American Legion Sidney L. Smith Post #24 in Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Bill’s life are his wife, Lois, Aberdeen; two sons, Van (Debbie) Nerland, Aberdeen; Jay (Lori) Nerland, Woodstock, IL; two daughters, Lyn (Brad) Beattie, Nixa, MO; Gina (Alan) Steffins, Springfield, MO; brother, Harley (Ruth) Nerland, Moundview, MN; sister, Odell (Don) Hunstad, Le Mars, IA; ten grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Tad; two brothers, Carmen & Jarvis; sisters-in-law, Georgia & Violet.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Tiffany Dunagan, Brittany Williams, Breann Beattie, Samantha Steffins, Dakota Nerland, and Sabrina Steffins.

Pallbearers will be Bryce Nerland, Beau Beattie, Jacob Steffins, Dillion Bellest Nerland, Jamey Dunagan, and Ed Rieger.

EUNICE BERGEUR

The funeral service for Eunice Bergeur, 89, of Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will be at Warner Township Cemetery at a later date. Eunice died Tuesday, April 28, at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Eunice Remde was born July 21, 1920 at Mansfield, SD to Rudolph & Fannie Remde. As a young child the family moved to New Jersey. This is the area where Eunice grew up and attended school, graduating from Pleasantville High School with the Class of 1939.

On June 28, 1981, Eunice married Walter Bergeur. She worked at JC Penny in Pleasantville, NJ, and also at Lennox China Factory.

Eunice was very talented and enjoyed playing the piano, organ, and harmonica. She enjoyed decorating cakes, knitting, and writing and receiving letters. Eunice had a special love for animals. She had a strong faith in God and loved the things of the Lord.

Grateful for having shared Eunice’s life are her husband, Walter; niece, Evelyn Balsiger; and nephew, David R. Shaw.

She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Dorris Shaw.

ARVILLA SCHUMACHER

The funeral service for Arvilla Schumacher, 82, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Friday, May 1, 2009, at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Arvilla died Monday, April 27, at ManorCare Health Services.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Thursday, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Arvilla Marcella was born October 11, 1926, at Long Lake, SD, to William and Ida (Rath) Fischer. She attended school at Long Lake and obtained her teaching credentials at Northern State Teachers College. She taught school for several years. On November 9, 1947, she married Edmund Schumacher in Long Lake. They lived and worked on the family farm until 2003 when they moved to Aberdeen.

She was church organist for many years. She was a member of ELCW, taught Sunday school, and worked with Junior Lutherans and Luther League. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary.

Grateful for having shared Arvilla’s life are her loving and caring husband, Edmund, of 61 years, two daughters, Marilyn Carlow (Mike), Pine Ridge; and Elaine Schumacher, Monterey, CA; and one son, Ed, Jr. (Marti), Napa, CA; seven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren

She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Florence Retzer, and her brother William preceded her in death.

JERRY A. RAU

The funeral service for Jerry A. Rau, 58, Aberdeen, will be 1:00pm, Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Calvary Baptist Church, with Pastor Randy Battey officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with Mililtary Honors by Sydney L. Smith Post #24. Jerry died Monday, April 20, at his home.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Friday, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Jerry A. Rau was born September 15, 1950 at Aberdeen, SD to Gottlieb & Alice (Pfeifle) Rau. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. Jerry graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in May of 1969. He was drafted into the US Army in May of 1970 and was honorably discharged in May of 1976.

On June 14, 1975, Jerry married Sharon Kusser at Stephan, SD. To this union were added three children: Stacie, Susanna and Scott.

Jerry was currently employed with Dakota Oil/Harms Oil for twenty-three years.

Jerry was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and American Legion Post #24. He enjoyed volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club, hunting, camping, and car racing. Jerry loved watching sports and was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan. He especially loved spending time with his grandson.

Grateful for having shared Jerry’s life are his wife, Sharon, Aberdeen; mother, Alice Rau, Aberdeen; three children, Stacie Rau, St. Louis Park, MN; Susanna Rau and her son, Kaden Rau-Jacobson, Fargo, ND; Scott Rau, Denver, CO; sister, Sharon (Jerry) Kost, Aberdeen; brothers, Robert (Donna) Rau, Bartelville, OK; Wesley (Pam) Rau, Oak Harbor, WA; his special little dog, Macy.

Honorary casket bearers are Kaden Rau-Jacobson, all of Jerry’s family, friends and co-workers.

He is preceded in death by his father, Gottlieb & father-in-law, Joseph Kusser.
