JOHN C. BATTEEN

Memorial service for John C. Batteen, 93, Aberdeen and formerly Cresbard is 10:30 am, Friday, August 14, 2009 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Private burial will be held. John died Tuesday, August 4, 2009 in Tuscon, AZ.

Visitation will be from 9 am to Noon Thursday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Family prefers memorials to the Yelduz Shrine Childrens Transportation Fund.

John C. Batteen was born on March 8, 1916 at Northville, SD to Chester and Almeda (Green) Batteen. He moved to Cresbard with his parents at the age of six. He attended Cresbard High School and graduated in 1934.

He worked with his father on their farm until 1939, at which time he started his own farming operation. He married Dorothy Perry on October 2, 1940 and they would have celebrated their 69th anniversary in October. They lived in Cresbard until retiring in 1969 and moved to Aberdeen. He loved the land and visited it often. He and Dorothy spent 34 years in their winter home in Mesa, AZ.

He was a member of the Cresbard and Aberdeen Methodist Churches. He served on the Cresbard School Board. He was the past Master of the Cresbard Masonic Lodge. He served as Worthy Patron of Eastern Star of Cresbard for thirteen years. He was a member of the York and Scottish Rite, Yelduz Shrine, past Captain of the Yelduz Foot Patrol, past Potentate of Yelduz Temple, past President of the Midwest Shrine Association, past director of the Royal Order of Jesters, and a member of the Apache Wells Shrine Club of Mesa, AZ.

Grateful for having shared John’s life are his wife, Dorothy, three children, Dennis (Linda) Batteen, Aberdeen, Lynne (Tom) Wiedebush, Tucson, AZ and Jon Batteen, Fountain Hills, AZ, five grandchildren, Jana (Keith) Hurley, Rick Wiedebush, Ryan (Lisa) Wiedebush, Trisha (Jeff) Gardner and John J. Batteen, four great grandchildren, Kaylyn Deiter, Keaton Deiter, Eric Hurley and Lauren Wiedebush.

John is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Fern Wegner, Ferol O’Neil and Vera Bailey.

RYAN THOMAS HELLING

The funeral service for Ryan Thomas Helling, 27, Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Friday, August 7, 2009 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Mary Anne Nelson-Loefke officiating. Burial will be at Warner Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 1-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with family present from 5-7pm. A prayer service will be held at 7pm.

Ryan Thomas Helling was born on Thanksgiving morning, November 26, 1981, to Thomas and Susan (Nilsson) Helling. Ryan was born and lived his entire life in Aberdeen. He died on August 2, 2009 at his home while surrounded by his family.

Ryan was known for his outgoing personality, his shining smile, and the twinkle in his eyes. He loved to visit with friends, family, and neighbors, and cherished spending time with his nieces and his dog, Bella. A strong sense of determination enabled Ryan to overcome many disability related issues and to lead a happy and fulfilling life.

Ryan graduated from Central High School in Aberdeen where he was a member of the Show Choir. Ryan was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Aberdeen, a past member of Boy Scout Troop 10 and the Whitetail Bowman Archery Club. He was a regular at Camp Courage/Camp DreamMakers as a camper, a junior counselor and then as staff counselor. Ryan enjoyed attending movies, biking, archery, hunting, snow skiing, and watching his Uncle Lynn race at area racetracks. Ryan was always up to going places and trying new things.

Grateful for having shared Ryan’s life are his parents, Tom & Sue; sister, Bekka Helling; nieces, Rhianna Schmidt & Kara Schmidt; grandparents, Melbourne & Dorothy Helling; uncles, Michael (Clare) Helling; Paul (Pam) Helling; Marlin (Rhonda) Nilsson; Darwin (Regina) Nilsson; Lynn Nilsson; Carey (Sonya) Nilsson; aunt, Mary (Ed) Dunlap; dog, Bella.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Ernie & Carol Nilsson.

Pall bearers will be Mike & Matthew Helling, Paul & Sam Helling, and Ed & Lance Dunlap. Honorary pall bearers are Marion Marske, Roger Darling, and the late Floyd Miller.

HOWARD W. JONES

Graveside service for Howard W. Jones is 10 am, Saturday, August 8 at Groton Union Cemetery, Pastor Raymond Pomplun officiating, with military honors by Groton American Legion Post 39. Howard died on June 13, 2009 in Palm Harbor, Florida.

Howard is survived by his wife, Greta, of 59 years; son Kirby; daughters Dana and Nancy; two grandsons Kenji and Tomiya; and sisters Ruth Stedman and Frances Phelps.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

IVAN KIMBALL

Funeral services for Ivan Harold Kimball, 80, Aberdeen, are 10:30am, Monday, August 3, 2009, at Hecla United Methodist Church, with Reverend Nancy Manning officiating. Burial will follow at Hecla City Cemetery, Hecla, SD. Ivan passed away with his family by his side on Friday, July 31, 2009 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation: 3-6:30pm Sunday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen with a prayer service at 6:30pm.

Ivan Kimball was born August 17, 1928 to Milo and Victoria (Newman) Kimball of Burnstead, ND. He grew up on a farm near Houghton, SD and attended a rural school near Hecla, SD. On August 22nd, 1947 Ivan married Lela Herndon, in Webster, SD. They made their home in Hecla where they raised thirteen children. Ivan was a member of the United Methodist Church. He worked for the South Dakota DOT for almost 40 years. In 1981 they moved to Leola, SD until 1990, when they moved to Aberdeen. In 2008 Ivan moved to Groton Living Center, but to be closer to his family he moved to Bethesda Nursing Home later that year.

Ivan had a big heart to all. Everywhere he went he would find someone he knew. He loved to play cards, enjoy the company of friends and family, and to build things out of wood. Over the years Ivan built many decks and steps for family and friends. He loved to be around his family and going out to eat.

Grateful for having shared Ivan’s life are nine sons, Russell (Sharon), New Berlin, WI, Ted, Redfield, SD, Ivan, Jr., Eugene, OR, Charles (Robyn), Springfield, OR, Mark, Aberdeen, SD, Paul (Connie), Aberdeen, Dale (Lisa), Slidell, LA, William (Peggy), Aberdeen, Robert (Maricor), St. Louis Park, MN, three daughters, Vikki (Perry) Henningsen, Fullerton, ND, Pearl (Hung) Hua, Hudson, WI, Rita (Robert) Hofer, Warner, SD, brother William Kimball, Manitowoc, WI, twenty-five grandchildren and tweny-four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 56 years, son, Michael, two grandsons, Kane and Shane, and great-grandson, Parker, five brothers, and two sisters. Casket bearers will be Ivan’s sons.

FRANCES BENDEWALD

Funeral services for Frances Bendewald, 80, Aberdeen, are 10:30am Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, with Pastor Joanne Nagele officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Frances died Friday, July 31, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation will be from 9:30am until the time of service at the church.

Frances Delores Retzer, daughter of Christof and Lorentina (Spitzer) Retzer was born May 27, 1929, on the family farm near Ashley, North Dakota.

On June 20, 1948, she married Benjamin Bendewald in Leola, SD. They lived in Aberdeen and began farming near Warner in 1957. In 1965 they moved to their present farm southwest of Aberdeen.

Frances and Ben were married 59 years. She worked on the farm and also at the Virginia Café; St. Lukes Hospital; S&L Store; Montgomery Wards and in 1977 she went to work at J.C. Penny’s, retiring in 2006.

Her home was always spotless. Frances loved cooking and baking and everyone enjoyed her home cooked German food and baked goods. She was a great seamstress and enjoyed sewing for her girls. Frances’ pleasure was to read the Bible. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Warner. Frances and Ben were exceptional dancers. She enjoyed music, encouraging afternoons of family sing a longs and teaching her daughters how to play the piano. She loved to travel visiting her family in AK, AZ, MN, Washington DC, Italy, Germany, Austria, Mexico and Canada.

She will be dearly missed by her son, Benny (Patty) Bendewald, O’Neill, NE; daughters: Betty (James) Feist, Prior Lake, MN, Peggy (Steven) Gebur, Groton, SD, Donna (Wes) Graybill, Sierra Vista, AZ, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, sister Eunice (Don) Weismantel, Bath, SD and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother Harvey Retzer.

Honorary casket bearers: All of her Great Grandchildren, Keith Rehfeld, Co-workers at JC Penneys, and special friends Irene Oster, Dee Blanchard; Vernon and Roylene Schwab; Charlene DeVilleries: Shannon O’Fallon; Pat and Carroll Brick, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Anderson and her friends at Primrose: Hazel, Betty and Linda.

BLAZE LEADERCHARGE

The memorial service for Blaze Leadercharge, 32, Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Thursday, July 30, 2009 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, with Rev. Sheila Richards officiating. Burial will be at Holy Innocents Cemetery, Parmelee, SD. Blaze journeyed to the spirit world on July 27, 2009

Blaze Leadercharge was born February 19, 1977 at Valentine, NE to Floyd and Letha (Crane) Leader Charge. He grew up and attended school in Aberdeen. Blaze attended Aberdeen Central High School where he was a member of the marching band. After graduating in 1996, he attended Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, SD and became a certified welder. Blaze also attended Northern State University for three and a half years.

Blaze was an avid bowler and was on the Federal Employees League. He enjoyed fishing and loved riding his motorcycle. As a youth, Blaze traveled to many places with his mom who was the Aberdeen Area CHR Coordinatior for IHS. Blaze was a drummer and guitarist. Having coffee with his friends was a favorite past time of his. Blaze will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Grateful for having shared Blaze’s life are his parents, Floyd & Letha Leader Charge, Aberdeen, SD; sisters, Carol Leader Charge, Rockville, MD; Letha D. Leader Charge, Rapid City, SD; his nieces and nephews, Kristin Olivio; Paul Joseph “PJ” Dill; Skylar Tayim; Rachel and Alicia Runnels; great nieces and nephews, Aiyanna and Noah Olivio; Luzahan, Keya & Kimimila Luta Belt; and family friend, Nancy Solomon-Blackbird

He is preceded in death by his mother, Letha.

ERNESTINE ROBLEWSKY

Services for Ernestine “Ernie” Roblewsky, 94, Aberdeen, are 11:00am, Saturday, August 1, 2009 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Tom Hagar officiating. Burial at Riverside Memorial Park. Ernie died Monday, July 27, at ManorCare Health Services.

Visitation is 1-7pm, Friday, July 31 at the funeral home with family present from 5-7pm.

Ernestine “Ernie” Roblewsky was born on June 23, 1915 to William and Rosaline (Wagner) Fabert in a one room house near Mina, SD. She attended country school in the area. While growing up, Ernie helped her parents on the family farm. She helped with the crops and livestock. The family would ride to church on Sundays in a surrey pulled by their two horses.

Ernie moved to Aberdeen in her early twenties and started working as a live in help. She worked for several families until her grandmother introduced her to Joseph “Joe” Roblewsky. Joseph and Ernestine were married in June 27, 1940 in Aberdeen. Joe worked for the railroad in the early sixties and also worked for Aberdeen City.

Ernie loved children and often babysat her grandchildren. Friends of the family would always call her mom. She enjoyed sitting on her porch and watching people. She cared for animals and even took in several injured birds. Ernie enjoyed time spent working in her garden. She liked to read and collected many knick-knacks.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son: David (Charlotte) Roblewsky, Warner; three grandchildren: Richard (Yung Sook) Roblewsky, Langley Air Force Base, VA, Diane (Mike) Conklin, Dumont, IA, and Jason (Michelle) Roblewsky, Warner; eight great grandchildren: Cameron Roblewsky, Patricia Roblewsky, Courtney Roblewsky, Kimberly Roblewsky, Braden Conklin, Samantha Roblewsky, Rebecca Roblewsky and Vanessa Roblewsky; sister: Elsie Albrecht, Columbia, and sister-in-laws, Josephine Yobbe, Fife, WA and Gail Fabert, Miles City, MT.

Ernie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe, three brothers: George Fabert, Danny Fabert, and Ben Fabert, and one sister, Rose Smith.

Casketbearers are Frank Burckhard, Joe Albrecht, Chuck Fabert, Bernie Rall, Ed Wiseman, and Todd Lechner. Honorary casketbearers will be Ernie’s grandchildren and great grandchildren and David Sammons.

MARGE BUHLER

Marjorie Buhler, 78, formerly of Aberdeen died Monday, July 20, 2009, at Sanford Hospice in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 1:00p.m. Friday, July 24, 2009, at Faith United Methodist Church in Aberdeen with Pastor Jack Erickson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

Visitation will be 1-6 pm, Thursday with family present from 4-6 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Marjorie LaVonne Parks was born February 25, 1931, to Hugh and Nellie (Olson) Parks, in Butler, SD. She was raised on the family farm near Butler and graduated from Webster High School. A graduate of Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa, she taught school in Britton, SD, Roslyn, SD, and at Howard Hedger Elementary in Aberdeen.

She married Kenneth Buhler June 18, 1954 in Butler. The couple first made their home in Webster, moving to Aberdeen when their children were young. Marge was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church, the Christian Women’s Club, the United Methodist Women, and the League of Women Voters. After her children were grown she worked as a house parent at the School for the Visually Handicapped in Aberdeen. She loved growing flowers and was an accomplished knitter who made beautiful sweaters and afghans for family and friends. Marge enjoyed baking cookies for her family and made sure the cookie jar was full when the children and grandchildren came to visit. The coffee pot was always on for visitors at her house.

Survivors include three children, Clarice Buhler of Milbank, Kent (Barb) Buhler of Pierre, and Lenel (Don) Wolf of Brooklyn Park, MN; three granddaughters, Katie Buhler, Allison Wolf, and Danielle Wolf; and one brother, Floyd Parks of Webster.

She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, her parents, her sister Ethel and her brother Dale.

Honorary bearers will be the staff at the Special Care Unit at the Golden Living Center in Milbank.

In lieu of memorials, the family requests contributions in Marge’s name to the National Parkinson Foundation (http://www.parkinson.org/).

JEFFREY “JEFF” LOOMIS

The funeral service for Jeffrey “Jeff” Loomis, 37, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial following at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Jeff died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation: 1-7pm, Tuesday, with family present from 5-7pm and a prayer service at 7pm at the funeral home

Jeffrey Dean Loomis was born on September 28, 1971 to Ronald Loomis and JoAnn Ackerman at Aberdeen, SD. He grew up and attended school in Aberdeen. After high school, Jeff moved to Chillicothe, Ohio for a short time. He then moved to Helena, MT for several years where he worked at the federal building. Jeff moved back to South Dakota, living in Huron a short time before returning to Aberdeen in 2004.
Jeff was a member at the YMCA. He loved the mountains. Jeff had a passion for riding motorcycle and would often go on short road trips with his friends. Hunting and fishing were favorite pass times of Jeff’s. He and his father fished at Richmond Lake, the James River, or Lake Mitchell. Family and friends were very important to Jeff. He loved to spend time with his nieces and nephews. Many of his friends would often meet at the Starlight Café for coffee. Jeff was a great cook. He was a very giving and generous person and was always there to lend a helping hand. Jeff also had a grateful spirit and was thankful for the things he had and the special people in his life.

Grateful for having shared Jeff’s life are his mother, JoAnn Ackerman, Aberdeen; father Ronald Loomis, Aberdeen; two brothers: Robert “Bob” Little and Shawn Loomis, both of Aberdeen; four nieces and nephews: Katie Owen, Tyler Owen, Dalton Owen and Ryan Owen; one great aunt, Dorothy Schlosser; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Jeff was preceded in death by his grandparents, Christian and Magdalena Ackerman, Mildred Johnson, and Merle Loomis, two aunts: Jenny Vetter and Bernice Miller; and his uncle Harold Ackerman.
