GERALD M. “WEARY” WILBER

Gerald M. “Weary” Wilber, 85, Ferney died Friday, October 16, 2009 at his daughters home. Private inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Family will be greeting friends from 6-8 pm, Monday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Gerald Wilber was born on May 31, 1924 at Aberdeen, SD to Vernon T. and Frances Delilah (Jarrett) Wilber. He attended school in Aberdeen. In June 1941 he entered the US Navy and was honorably discharged in December of 1945. He married Lorraine Hoeft in Custer, SD on July 17, 1953. He worked at the Army base in Igloo, SD until 1965 transferring to Eagle River, AK. He worked at Ft Richardson Army base until his retirement in 1979. He moved back to South Dakota and was a longtime Ferney resident. He resided at Gellhaus Carehaus and later moved to his daughter home.

Weary was an avid hunter, fisherman, bowler, card player and reader. He will also be remembered for his dry sense of humor and his devilish smile and one liners.

Grateful for having shared Weary’s life are his children, Timothy Wilber of Sauk Rapids, MN, Douglas (Mary) Wilber of Wasilla, AK, John (Suzanne) Wilber of Jacksonville, NC, Lorinda (Shawn) Millim, Groton, SD, grandchildren, Jennifer, Jared, Elizabeth, Zachary, Benjamin, Catherine, Rebecka, Rachel, McKiley, Michaila and Daltyn, great grandchildren, Kaleb and Peyton, and his sister, Donna (Al) Roehr of Sacramento, CA.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lorraine in 2005, and brother, Douglas.

MARTHA RATH

The memorial service for Martha Rath, 102, Aberdeen will be 11:00am, Monday, October 19, 2009, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. A private family burial will precede at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Martha died Wednesday, October 14 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 2-7pm, with family present from 5-7pm, Sunday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Martha was born May 22, 1907, to Maria & John Guthmiller at Leola, SD. She married John Rath on June 22, 1929. She lived her life in Leola as a wife and mother, expert chef, baker, gardner and bridge player. She and John spent many happy hours fishing for walleyes at their place at the “Little Leola” encampment at Pollock. She was a big fan of the Minnesota Twins.

Grateful for having shared Martha’s life are her son, Orley (Viva) Rath, daughter-in-law, Mary “Mickey” Rath, grandchildren, Steve (Tam) Rath, Laurel (Dan) Grow, Tom (Karla) Rath, Rob (Jeanine) Rath, Nancy (Mike) Kuiken, and nine great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, son, Jim, five brothers, and four sisters.

FRIEDA SCHUMACHER FORBES

Funeral service for Frieda Schumacher Forbes, 91, of Pierre and formerly of Aberdeen, will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church at Aberdeen. Pastor D. Thomas Rawerts will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park at Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Monday at the funeral home.

Frieda died Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center at Pierre.

Frieda Wiedrich, daughter of Gottlieb and Martha (Kirschenman) Wiedrich was born November 4, 1917 on the family homestead southeast of Hosmer, SD. She attended country school.

She was united in marriage to Edwin Schumacher on June 10, 1935 at Hosmer. They moved to a farm near Loyalton, SD and later moved to the Schumacher family homestead south of Roscoe, SD. In 1947, they moved into Roscoe and in 1957 they moved to Aberdeen. This is where they made their home until Edwin’s death on August 12, 1966.

On November 16, 1973 she was united in marriage to Harold Forbes Sr. at Aberdeen. Harold died on April 1, 2005. In October of 2008, Frieda moved to Pierre and began making her home at Kelly’s Retirement Home where she remained until the time of her death.

Frieda loved to garden and also enjoyed sewing. Throughout her life, Frieda always enjoyed dancing and big band music. She was member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Frieda’s life are her son, Arnold (Delena) Schumacher of Ft. Pierre, daughter, Mary Alice (Louis) Boknecht of Atchison, KS, two step sons, Harold (Marlene) Forbes Jr. of Mobridge and Dean (Sue) Forbes of Whiting, IA, one step daughter Janelle (Charles) Snyder of Apple Valley, MN, three sisters, Ruth Obenauer and Alice (Waldon) Kallenberger both of Eureka, SD and Lorraine (Verne) Reidt of Roscoe, one daughter-in-law, Joanne Schumacher of Bloomington, MN, 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, five step grandchildren, 12 step great-grandchildren and one step great-great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, two sons, three brothers and one sister.

The family prefers memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church 915 South Dakota Street, Aberdeen, SD 57401.

MICHAEL JOHN BURT

The service for Michael Burt, 49, Owatonna, MN, will be 1:00pm, Thursday, October 15, 2009 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Captain Eddie Wilson officiating. Burial will be at Mellette Cemetery. Michael died Sunday, October 11, at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Wednesday at the funeral home.

Michael John Burt was born May 31, 1960 at Aberdeen to Roy & Jeannette (Godbout) Burt. This is the area where he grew up graduated from Aberdeen Central High School. He then moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he drove truck for the Circus. Michael worked at the Salvation Army in Minneapolis for several years.

Michael liked fishing, beadwork and reading, especially the Bible. Michael really enjoyed ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at Christmastime and was nationally recognized for it. He loved football and baseball and especially enjoyed watching the Twins and Vikings.

Grateful for having shared Michael’s life are his parents, Roy & Irene Burt, Warner, son, Johnny Ray Burt, Kansas City, brothers, Roy & Carol Burt, Jr., Bob Ernest, Mitchell Burt, Leon (Jenny) Clark, Eldon Clark, sisters, Theresa Pouliett, Barbara (Todd) Rosebrock, Darcy (Ken) McPeek, and Sherry (John) Whicitten.

He is preceded in death by his paternal & maternal grandparents and mother, Jeannette Samuels.

PEGGY SEXTON

The funeral service for Peggy Sexton, 66, Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00 P.M., Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens at a later date. Peggy died Wednesday, October 7, at Golden Living Center, Ipswich.

Visitation is from 1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with family present from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Friday, October 9, at the funeral home.

Peggy Neuharth was born December 24, 1942 at Eureka, SD to Elmer & Edna (Deahl) Neuharth. She was baptized and confirmed at the Reformed Church in Eureka, SD. Peggy attended school in Eureka where she was active in band, playing the oboe. She graduated with honors from Eureka High School in 1960. Peggy went on to the School of Commerce in Aberdeen and got her degree.

On April 29, 1962, Peggy married Paul Sexton, Jr. at Aberdeen. She was employed with Indian Health Services and retired after thirty years. Paul had his pilot’s license and they flew on many trips together.

Peggy enjoyed gardening, and raised both vegetable and flower gardens. She was a great cook. Music was always a vital part of Peggy’s life. She played several instruments including the organ. Peggy was able to play organ for the staff and residents at Golden Living Center in Ipswich. The family always had dogs and Peggy had a special place in her heart for them. She was a loving wife and adored her family.

Grateful for having shared Peggy’s life are her son, Stacy (Kelly) Sexton, of Aberdeen, three granddaughters, Stephanie Sexton, Tracey (Eric) Pfeiffer and their children MacKenzie and Ethan Pfeiffer, and Ashley Dahlberg. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Edna and her husband, Paul.

EDWIN “ED” GUIDICE

Services for Edwin “Ed” Guidice, 95, Aberdeen, are 2:00pm, Friday, October 9, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with Military Honors by Sydney L. Smith Post #24. Ed died Wednesday, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation is 1-7pm, Thursday, prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

Edwin Guidice was born in McPherson County rural Eureka on June 22, 1914 to Phillip and Lydia (Mehlhaff) Guidice. In the 1920’s the family moved to Milwaukee, WI. In the 1930’s, the family moved back to South Dakota, making their home in Eureka.

On July 16, 1941 he entered the US Army at Ft. Snelling, MN. He served in the European Theater and was in the Battle at Normandy. He returned to the United States and was honorably discharged at Camp McCoy, WI on October 31, 1945. He returned to Eureka and was Service Manager at Fouster and Nelson Chevrolet Dealership.

He married LaVerne Wolff at Eureka, SD on February 29, 1948. They continued to make Eureka their home. In the early 1950’s he owned and operated the Mobile Bulk Dealership until 1967. The family moved to Aberdeen, where he worked for the SD Department of Revenue as an agent until retiring in 1984. In 1978, they made their home at Mina Lake and in 2002 they moved back to Aberdeen.

Ed was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He was a member of Yelduz Shrine, where he was Treasurer for thirteen years, a member of Mobridge Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Past Commander of the Eureka American Legion, Past Commander of District 14, McPherson County Commander, Past Master of Masonic Lodge in Eureka, and Past Master of Rose Croix (Scottish Rite).

Grateful for having shared Ed’s life are his wife, LaVerne, daughters, Kathy Dunn, Pittsburgh, PA, Jayne Hunt, Pittsburgh, PA, Joyce Riskas (Joel Terry), Los Angeles, CA, three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters, and granddaughter, Mary Laron.

IONE A. BENDERWALD

The funeral service for Ione A. Benderwald, Aberdeen, SD, will be 11:00am, Friday, October 9, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial will be at 2:00pm Friday, at the Ellendale City Cemetery, Ellendale, ND. Ione passed away Monday, October 5 at ManorCare Health Services after a courageous fight against cancer. She was surrounded by friends and family.

Visitation will be from 10:00am until the time of service at the church. Arrangements by Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, SD.

Ione DeYapp was born on January 14, 1924 to Howard “Bud” and Agnes (Haakenson) DeYapp in Camp Release Township, Lac qui Parle County, MN. She grew up and attended school in Aberdeen. After her junior year at Aberdeen Central High School, her family moved to Ellendale, ND, where she graduated from Ellendale High School. Ione went on to receive her Teacher’s Certificate from Ellendale Normal and Industrial College in 1942. She then moved to Minneapolis, MN in 1942, where she began working at JC Penney.

Ione married Earle “Bud” Erickson on May 27, 1944 at Minneapolis, MN. They had two children, Judy and James.

Earle passed away on August 8, 1975. Ione then married her high school sweet heart, Ivan Benderwald on July 8, 1976 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Plaines, IL where they resided until they retired to West Palm Beach, FL. Ivan passed away on July 9, 1996, and Ione moved back to Aberdeen.

Ione was an active member of First United Methodist Church. She loved her participation and friends in Women’s Circle, Widows Support and Homestead Bible Study Groups. Ione enjoyed helping at the annual rummage sale at the church. She was a member of Sons of Norway and was able to travel with them. Ione enjoyed traveling and was able to visit California and Mexico, but most enjoyed visiting family. Ione was a sweet and giving person who always put others before herself. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Ione was also an avid reader and exercise enthusiast.

Grateful for having shared Ione’s life are her step-daughter Cathy (Bruce) Mantia, Hinsdale, IL, and their children John and Kate, step-daughter Debra (George) Behrens, Lakewood Ranch, FL, and their children Sarah, Michael and Christopher, grandson Craig (Mari) Keisling, Elk River, MN and their children Sarah and Melissa, grandson Jeff (Angie) Keisling, Collierville, TN, and their children Garrett and Anna Grace, grandson Daniel (Laurie) Weinmeyer, Woodbury, MN, and grandson Brady (Lynn) Weinmeyer, Woodbury, MN.

Ione was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, daughter Judy Keisling, and brother Howard “Bud” DeYapp.

The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society.

GRACE WILSON

The funeral service for Grace Wilson, 94, Aberdeen, will be 1:00pm, Thursday, October 8, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial will be at Hillsview Cemetery in Westport. Grace died Monday, October 5, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Grace Hansen was born on February 12, 1915 to Hans & Susanna (Miller) Hansen at Wilmot, SD, where she grew up and attended school.

She married Llewellyn Wilson on September 26, 1935 at Bison, SD. In the following years the family lived in Minnesota, South Dakota and Montana. In 1953, they moved to Westport, SD where Grace was active in the PTA and the Methodist Church. She cooked school lunch and drove the school bus for the Frederick School Distirict for many years. She then worked as a Ward Clerk at St. Lukes Hospital for ten years until retirement.

Grace was a past president of the PTA, Officer of Ladies Aid, and a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting, camping, and traveling, but mostly spending time with her children and many grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Grace’s life are her daughter, Claudia (Dennis) Howell, Sioux Falls, three sons, Michael Wilson, Westport, Lee (Victoria) Wilson, Tim (Jaye) Wilson both of Aberdeen, one sister, Dollie Foss, Wilmot, twenty grandchildren, forty-five great grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Llewellyn, son Larry Wilson, daughters Marlene (Wilson) Dehne and Sharon (Wilson) Ward, five brothers, one sister, five granddaughters, and one grandson.

Casket bearers will be grandsons: Kerry Wilson, Kevin Dehne, David Dehne, Lee Howell, Michael Wilson, and Tim Wilson.

Honorary casket bearers will be all of Grace’s grandchildren.

CORA FIELDER

The memorial service for Cora Fielder, 81, Aberdeen will be 2:00pm, Monday, October 5, 2009 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, with Rev. Katherine Costas officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. CST at the Episcopal Church cemetery in LaPlant, SD. Cora died Friday, October 2, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Cora was born at home on Nov. 17, 1927, in the Four Bear community on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in SD, to Claude and Amy (Bowker) Fielder. Her grandmother, Annie (Two Spears) Fielder, gave Cora the Indian name Wicahpi Nunpawin, which means Two Star Woman, because both Cora's brother, Luther, and her sister, Barbara, were enlisted in the military service during World War II.

Cora attended school at Cheyenne Agency and graduated from the Cheyenne River Boarding School in 1946 as valedictorian of her class. She then attended Haskell Institute in Lawrence, KS, where she received a commercial degree in business in 1949.

After graduating from Haskell, Cora went to work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Pine Ridge for three years.She then did clerical work for a mobile dental unit in Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Arizona for several years. Cora then returned to SD to work for the Hughes County Welfare Office in Pierre for six months. After that, she went to work for the U.S. Federal Government's Solicitor's Office in Pierre for ten years, where she worked on the distribution of payments to Sioux Indians for ponies seized in 1876 by military authorities (Pony Claims).

Cora transferred to Aberdeen, SD, when the Solicitor's Office in Pierre was moved to Aberdeen. In the 1960's, she went to work for the Realty Department with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Aberdeen. She retired in 1986 after 37 years of employment.

After her retirement in 1986, Cora kept active by working as a volunteer at Dacotah Prairie Museum for 20 years. She also swam regularly at the Barnett Center, researched and wrote family genealogy, was an avid reader, a faithful Minnesota Twins fan, and a traveler.

She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, the Aberdeen Area Senior Center, and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

Survivors include one sister, Barbara LeBeau of Pierre; and five nephews, Randy (Peggy) LeBeau, Aberdeen; Allen LeBeau, Rapid City; Barry LeBeau, Pierre; Rondell (Tammy) LeBeau, Pierre; and Michel (Laurie) LeBeau, Rapid City.

Cora was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Luther; and her brother-in-law, Michael LeBeau.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.
