Lisa Welter

Lisa Ann Welter, age 46, of Yankton, SD, passed away on June 3, 2004 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral services will be 1:30 PM, Monday, June 7, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Fr. John Fischer and Fr. Richard Baumberger officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery,

Yankton. Visitations will be 5-9 PM, Sunday, June 6, 2004, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a 7:00 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. prayer service.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Schild, Brooks Schild, Tim Trautt, Kerry Johnson, Jody Brady and Jackie Schoon.

Lisa Ann (Frick) Welter was born on January 17, 1958, to Duane and the late Mary Lee (Hegenbart) Frick at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. Growing up in Yankton, she attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Yankton High School in 1976. Lisa went on to attend Black Hills State University and later graduated from South Dakota State University in 1979. She went on to work at Coast to Coast in Brookings for a short time and later moved back to Yankton where she worked at the Yankton High School Library.

Lisa married Mike Welter in 1986 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton. From this marriage, they had two sons: John Paul, age 16, and Matthew James, age 14. Lisa and Mike were later divorced in 1990.

She began employment with Kolberg-Pioneer Manufacturing as a secretary in 1990 and continued working until her illness necessitated her leaving the job.

Lisa will always be remembered by her smile, her wit and her unique ability to connect with the people she just met. She put everyone's needs before her own, and we will always miss her.

She is survived by her sons: John and Matt, of Yankton; parents, Duane (Natalie), of Yankton, SD; brother, Mark, of San Antonio, TX; sisters: Beth, of Austin, TX, Amy (Tom) Putz, of Scottsdale, AZ, Leann Paulson of St. Paul, Minn., Laurie Swansen of Minneapolis, and Linda Johnson of Yankton; aunt, Dottie Yeoman, of Silverdale, WA; nephew, Tyler Frick and nieces Trisha Frick and Mary Beth Putz.

Lisa was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Lee Frick; and grandparents, Ernie (Harriet) Frick and Harold (Alda) Hegenbart.

James Lichter

James J. Lichter, age 72, of Yankton, SD, passed away June 10, 2004, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2004, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Mark Lichter and Rev. John Fischer officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton.

Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a 7:00 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Scott Mutchelknaus, Jay Mutchelknaus, Roger Gebel, David Hohn, Gerald Lichter and Paul Lichter.

James Joseph Lichter was born on October 10, 1931, to Peter and Mary (Heisinger) Lichter at Parkston, SD. He graduated from Parkston High School. Jim served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged after 2 years of service in 1954. He married the love of his life, Geneva Hohn, on December 28, 1954.

He worked as a manager at the Parkston Creamery until he moved his family to Yankton in 1965. Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, then employed Jim as the Director of Physical Facilities, from May 1965 until he retired in 1994.

Jim enjoyed traveling with his wife Geneva. In their travels, they enjoyed visiting family, friends and seeing all the beautiful states of our country. One of his greatest pleasures was attending the many polka fests.

Jim was very creative in design and building. He was a problem solver and always had a solution to every problem. Jim used his many talents and abilities during his service at the hospital.

Jim had a great love for God and the church. He was active in the church and community as a volunteer. He was an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was a loving, devoted husband and father. We will miss him dearly.

The memory of Jim will be cherished by his wife, Geneva, Yankton, SD; sons: John (Linda), Yankton, SD, Leonard (Nancy), Phoenix, AZ, George (Dwayn), Murray, IA; daughters: Diane (Jim) Hyde, Lincoln, NE, Linda (Kent) Braunesreither, Sioux Falls, SD; 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; brother, Tom (Alice), Mitchell, SD and sister, Fran Mutchelknaus, Wolsey, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Mary Lichter and brother in law, Mutch Mutschelknaus.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Benedictine Health Foundation, 1000 W. 4th St., Suite 14, Yankton, SD 57078 or St. Benedict Catholic Church in memory of James Lichter, 1500 St. Benedict Dr., Yankton, SD 57078.

William 'Bill' Anderson

CROFTON, Neb. -- William H. "Bill" Anderson, 59, Crofton, Neb., died Thursday (June 10, 2004) at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at Wintz Funeral Home, Crofton, with the Rev. Robert Neu officiating. Burial is in the Crofton City Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Mike Mazza, Chris Anderson, Tom Wehling, Jerry Dickinson, Dee Johnson, Troy Behounek, Austin Yonke and Bob Mayberry.

Wintz Funeral Home, Crofton, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Aug. 30, 1944, in Oakland, Neb., to Carl and Marian Anderson. He grew up in Oakland and graduated from Oakland High School in 1962.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1962-65. He married Judy Throener in November of 1966. After his marriage, he moved to Omaha where he worked at Kellogg's until 1997.

After his retirement, he lived at Kohles Acres. He loved to hunt and ride his four-wheeler with his dog, Tara.

He is survived by one son: Corey (Lori) Anderson, Omaha, Neb.; one daughter: Trina (Mike) Mazza, Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren; his mother: Marian Anderson, Oakland, Neb.; three sisters: Dee Michael, Bennington, Neb.; Janet Higley, Tucson, Ariz.; and Jolene (Dave) Allen, Panama, Neb.; and two brothers: James (Rene) Anderson, Papillion, Neb.; and Leonard Anderson, Omaha, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

Wilfred 'Bill' Bonertz

WYNOT, Neb. -- Wilfred "Bill" Bonertz, age 79 of Wynot, Neb. died on Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Avera McKennen Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Memorial Services will be on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family (Sacred Heart) Catholic Church in Wynot, Nebraska.

Burial of cremains will be at Sts. Philip & James Cemetery, St. James, Neb.

No visitation. A Vigil Service will be on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Family Church in Wynot, Neb.

Wilfred was born on February, 25, 1925, in St. Helena, Neb., to Henry Theodore and Frances (Schmecker) Bonertz. He grew up in the St. Helena, Neb., area before entering the U.S. Navy. Bill served in the South Pacific on a Destroyer during World War II. After the service he married Bernadette "Curly" Vornhagen on September 9, 1947, in Fordyce, Neb. Bernadette died on December 23, 2002, at the age of 74. Bill and Bernadette lived and farmed in the St. Helena area. In 1959, they moved to the Wynot area where they owned and operated the Green Diamond in St. James, Neb. from 1962 to 1988.

Bill loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards, cooking. He especially enjoyed his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a former member of Sts. Philip & James Catholic Church in St. James, Neb., member Holy Family Catholic Church in Wynot, Neb.; Wynot American Legion Post No. 31; former member of Catholic Order of Foresters and a member of the "Green Diamond Euchre Club"

He is survived by eight children and their spouses: Sandy and Andrew Uhing, Hartington, Neb.; Chuck and Sharon Bonertz, Hillsdale, Ill.; Charlotte and Jerome Pinkelman, Wynot, Neb.; David Bonertz, Wynot, Neb.; Gerald and Marcella Bonertz, Swanton, Neb.; Debra and Kenny Richards, Burchard, Neb.; Donna and Duane Bruening, St. Helena, Neb.; and Jean and Ellis Nelson, Hartington, Neb.; 26 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Aurelia Huber, Pueblo, Colorado; and Viola and husband, Jerome Suing, Hartington, Neb.; and one brother, Ralph "Pete" Bonertz, Yankton, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two grandchildren: Chad Bonertz and Scott Bruening; four brothers: Theodore, Linus, Dick and Bruno Bonertz; and one sister, Rose Thoene.

Adolph 'Babe' Bierle

LESTERVILLE -- Adolph "Babe" Bierle, age 90, of Lesterville, SD, passed away Monday, June 14, 2004, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the Scotland United Church of Christ, Scotland, SD, with Rev. Del Neumeister officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories, Yankton.

Visitations will be 5 to 9 PM, Wednesday, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Monty Munkvold, Marty Munkvold, Matt Munkvold, Eric Lerssen, Cory Bierle and Jacob Bierle.

Adolph was born May 2, 1914, at rural Utica to Jacob and Mary (Pike) Bierle. He grew up on the family farm near Utica. He was baptized at Yankton on August 21, 1914. He attended Martinus Lutheran Church and was confirmed on August 14, 1927. He attended grade school at rural Utica. On June 27, 1939, he married Evelyn Vanorny. They farmed in the Utica area until retiring in 1978, when they moved to Lesterville.

All of his life he enjoyed baseball, either playing, coaching and later, watching it on TV. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren playing sports. He was on the baseball board for many years. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. In playing pinochle, beating the women was his all-time favorite. He served on various boards including telephone, school and church.

Those who will cherish his memory are his wife, Evelyn of Lesterville, SD: two sons: Danny (Janice) Bierle of Lesterville, SD and Daryl (Charlotte) Bierle of Utica, SD; two daughters: Peggy Munkvold of Lesterville, SD and Mary Kay (Ben) Lerssen of Sioux Falls, SD; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son-in-law, Albert Munkvold; two sisters; and five brothers.

Dorothy Luke

Mesa, AZ -- Dorothy Louise (Scott) Luke, formerly of Yankton, died May 28, 2004.

A short graveside service is 10 a.m. June 30 at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton.

Aaron Johnson Jr.

Aaron Alan Johnson Jr. "Tun Ka Wicasa" was born May 14, 1962, in Wagner, South Dakota to Aaron and Darlene (Stone Arrow) Johnson and he died June 14, 2004, near Espanola, New Mexico, from injuries sustained in a car accident.

Aaron attended Lincoln School and Sacred Heart later receiving his GED. He worked for Steiner's Locker and Cimpl's in Yankton. He also worked for John Morrell's Company in Sioux Falls and later in Sioux City. He was also employed by IBP while in Sioux City.

Aaron returned to the Traditional Dakota ways in August of 1988. He then counseled troubled youth at the Crittenden Center in Sioux City. He married his wife, Jan, on July 5, 1996, in Old Agency Village, South Dakota. They moved to Sacramento, California, in 1997 and settled in Santa Clara, New Mexico in 1998. From this union five children were born: Joshua, Hannah, Ben Aaron III and Leo, all at home. While living in New Mexico, he was employed as a truck driver for a U.S. Mail contractor. He was also a volunteer fireman and helped fight fires in the New Mexico area.

Aaron believed strongly in the traditional Dakota ways and family values. He was a Sun Dancer and enjoyed going to POW WOWs and Traditional ceremonies. He also enjoyed telling stories and passing on traditional values of life to the younger children. He was admired by and looked up to by many and will be greatly missed. He was very devoted to his family, and his children were his life.

Aaron is survived by his wife, Jan; five children: Josh, Hannah, Ben, Aaron III, and two-week-old Leo, all at home; one brother, Andy (Hope) Johnson of Yankton, SD; three sisters: Jackie Johnson of Yankton, SD, Gayle (Oscar) Vazquez of Flandreau, SD and Roxanne (Chris Savage) Johnson of Yankton, SD; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, a special grandson, Carlos Bernal Sabino; and a special godson, Chico Flute.

Aaron was preceded in death by his parents and by his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Milks Camp Community Hall, rural Bonesteel, South Dakota. Interment is in the United Church of Christ Cemetery, rural St. Charles, South Dakota.

Casketbearers are Terry Wright, Zach Johnson, Fred LaMere, Percy Saul, Kevin Andrews and Woody Spottedwood. Honorary casketbearers are Regis Chavarria, Dino Chavarria, Tom Bird Bear, Ben Chavarria, Fred Chavarria, Tony Chavarria, Tom Chavarria, Ray Chavarria, Anthony Baca, Porf Chavarria, Warren Chavarria, Josh Chavarria, Rick Flute and all of his family relatives.

There will be a lunch served at the community hall following the committal service.

Clausen Funeral Home, Bonesteel, is in charge of arrangements.
