LUTHER S. MYDLAND
Funeral services for Luther S. Mydland, 89, Aberdeen, will be 1:30pm, Monday, November 16, 2009, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial will be at Skudesness Lutheran Cemetery, Pierpont, SD with military honors. Luther died Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.
Visitation will be from 1-5pm Sunday, with a prayer service at 5pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Luther S. Mydland was born to Lars & Serine (Skaare) Mydland on July 16, 1920 on the family farm near Pierpont. He attended Skudesness Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed. Luther graduated from Roslyn High School with the Class of 1938. He entered the US Navy on December 12, 1942 and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Luther was honorably discharged on March 15, 1946. Luther returned to the family farm where he continued his families’ general farming and dairy operation and also did carpentry work.
Luther married Opal Johnson in 1949. In 1988, Luther moved to Aberdeen and married Lola Blank. They made their home in Aberdeen and Luther continued to do carpentry work, until retiring in the mid 1990’s.
Luther was a past member of Skudesness Lutheran Church, where he served as church custodian for thirty years. He was a member of the Webster Creamery Board for three years and also served on the Pierpont and Langford School Boards for eight years, as well as the Community Committee Board under the ASC for fifteen years. While living in Aberdeen, Luther volunteered at Meals on Wheels for sixteen years. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Grateful for having shared Luther’s life are his wife, Lola, Aberdeen, daughters, Marvel (John) Winter, Bemidji, MN, June (Charles) Rabenberg, Britton, Gayle (Mark) Nash, El Paso, TX, Step-daughter, Jean Olson, Poguoson, VA, Step-son, George (Connie) Blank, Casselton, ND, Step-son, Wayne (Katie) Blank, Anchorage, AK, brother, Homer (Marion) Mydland, Groton, sister, Ione Connoughton, Vancouver, six grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters and two grandchildren.
WALLACE G. DUNKER
Funeral service for Wallace G. Dunker, 89, Aberdeen will be 10 am, Friday, November 13, 2009 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Wallace died Monday, November 9, 2009 at the Golden Living Center, Groton, SD.
Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Thursday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with family present from 5-7 pm.
Wallace George Dunker was born on July 25, 1920, near Stratford, South Dakota. He was the fifth of seven children born to Edward and Eva J. (Carter) Dunker. He attended country school and graduated from Groton High School with the Class of 1938. After high school, Wally worked for his Uncle Walter on his farm.
Wally entered the army in 1943 and served in the European Theater of World War II; one of his military missions was teaching sharpshooting. He was honorably discharged from the service in April 1946.
Through benefits of the G.I. Bill, Wally attended pre-law at Northern State Teachers College, Aberdeen, and graduated from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, with a Doctor of Laws degree in 1950. Wallace married Marilyn K. Krebs of Raymond, SD, on June 28, 1948. To this union were born three children. Wally valued education and was proud that he was able to send each of his children to college to attain a bachelor degree and also took pride in each of his grandchildren attending college. In addition to their own children, Wally and Marilyn also cared for many foster children.
Wallace G. Dunker was a fifty-year member of the SD State Bar, and he began his practice of law in Redfield serving as City Attorney and serving as States Attorney for two terms in Spink County. He was Assistant Attorney General of the State of South Dakota in 1959-60 in Pierre. He opened a law practice in Aberdeen and served as Aberdeen’s Assistant City Attorney. In 1962, Wally began work as Field Solicitor in Aberdeen in the Solicitor’s Office of the U.S. Department of Interior; he retired in 1983. Wally married Joyce Saunders in 1978.
Wally was a life member of the Sunrise Masonic Lodge in Aberdeen; he served as Worshipful Master and Treasurer. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Masons in Aberdeen; he served as Venerable Master and Secretary-Treasurer. Wally was a life member of the Yelduz Shrine Temple in Aberdeen; he served as Potentate, chair of the Shrine Football Program, and was in the Roadrunners and Wrecking Crew. Also, he served as the secretary-treasurer of the Midwest Shrine Association. Wally married Betty May (Benson) Funk in 1988.
Wally was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church of Aberdeen. Over the years, Wally was involved in many service organizations in the Aberdeen area -- the Lions Club, the Kiwanis, the Elks, the Commandery, the Jaycees, the Moose Lodge, and the Aberdeen Senior Center. He was a life member and past president of National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Chapter 0584, and treasurer of the SD Federation of NARFE. Wally was member and past president of AARP, Chapter 2503, and taught its 55 Alive classes as well as helped with its Tax-Aide program. In addition to the service organizations, Wally was an avid hunter of pheasants and deer; he learned how to fly small aircraft; and, he also enjoyed competitive card games, especially bridge.
Grateful for having shared Wally’s life are his wife, Betty of Aberdeen; his three children, Jan of Omaha, NE, Jean (Jeff) Albrecht of Doland, SD, and Jody (David) Roeber of Garner, IA; six grandchildren, Sepp Albrecht of Brookings, SD, Sascha Albrecht of Asotin, WA, Sian (Mike) Dill of Brookings, SD, Daniel (Ashley) Roeber of Burnsville, MN, Matthew Roeber of Burnsville, MN, and Katharine Roeber of Garner, IA; two sisters Inez Knickrehm of Groton, SD, and Mildred Williams of Sioux Falls, SD.
He is preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, brothers, Raymond and Dale, and sisters Hazel Sager and Evelyn Borge Clausen.
Eliard “El” Mohr
The service for Eliard “El” Mohr, 82, of Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Thursday, November 12, 2009, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by Sydney L. Smith Post #24. El died Sunday November 8th, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Eliard “El” Mohr was born to Fred & Anna Mohr on August 30, 1927 at Hosmer, SD. This is the area where he grew up and attended school.
On October 31, 1958 El married Carol Wolf at Webster, SD. He was a Chevy truck mechanic at Lust Chevrolet for forty-two years.
El was a member of the Hosmer American Legion and The Moose Lodge of Aberdeen. He enjoyed Polka dancing.
Grateful for having shared El’s life are his children, Dorothy (Sheldon) Sampson, Faribault, MN, Michael (Greta) Wolf, Lincoln, CA, Mark (Pamela) Wolf, Aberdeen, brother, Ervin (Lorine) Mohr, nephew Dale (Yvonne) Mohr, seven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Carol, and brother Arthur.
LOIS ALVINA KLEINE
Funeral service for Lois Alvina Kleine, 78, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Thursday, November 12, 2009, Our Savior Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jais Tinglund officiating. Lois died Sunday November 8th, at ManorCare Health Services of Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 4-7pm, Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Lois Alvina Weseman was born to William & Rose (Bettin) Weseman on January 24, 1931 in Martin County, MN. She moved to Sherburn, MN, where she attended school.
On November 21, 1948 Lois married Robert Kleine at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sherburn. They made their home at Dunnell, MN. In August of 1959, she moved to Aberdeen and worked at St. Luke’s and Dakota Midland Hospital until it closed. Lois later worked at Cendant and the Kessler’s deli until her retirement.
Lois was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and baking. Lois was an avid sports fan and loved cheering on her favorite sports teams, the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Lakers as well as her favorite golfer, Tiger Woods.
Grateful for having shared Lois’ life are her children, Douglas Kleine, Aberdeen, Valarie Kilian, Northville, Vickie (Lee) Albrecht, Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Lori Kleine, Aberdeen, Charles Kleine, Marshfield, WI, Daryl (Kelly) Kleine, Marathon, WI, Paul Kleine, Aberdeen, sisters, Janet Lieghty, Lakefield, MN, Katherine Smith, Des Moines, IA, ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Honorary casket bearers will be Marnie Kilian, Joni Norton, Kristina Kleine, Carrie Lauersdorf, Jane Albrecht, Tiffany Guralski-Kleine, Haily Guralski-Kleine and all of Lois’s great grandchildren.
Casket bearers will be Joseph Kleine, Derek Kleine, Travis Kilian, Robert Haar, Shawn Norton and Austin Norton.

ROBERT RATH
The funeral service for Robert R. Rath, 80, Aberdeen, will be 1:00pm, Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Robert died Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.
Visitation will be 1-7pm, Friday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Robert R. Rath, son of John D. and Ida (Gugel) Rath was born on April 4, 1929 at Ashley, ND. He was raised on the family homestead NE of Long Lake, SD. He attended country school.
He was united in marriage to Edith Merkel on November 13, 1949 at Forbes, ND. They began making their home on a farm South of Leola, SD. For many years they were general farmers, raising small grains and livestock. In 2006 they moved to Aberdeen.
Robert was a past member of the Elks Lodge, acted as a McPherson County Commissioner for 10 years, and also sat on the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery Board. For many years he was active at St. James Lutheran Church at Leola serving as Deacon. He was also a member of the church council.
Robert’s greatest joy was farming. He also enjoyed restoring old tractors and going to dances in his free time.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Edith, three sons, David (Valerie) Rath of Leola, Mark (Donna) Rath of Lakeville, MN and Kevin (Lynn) Rath of Aberdeen, two daughters Elizabeth (Roger) Meyer of Sturgis, SD and Judy Thein of Lakeville, MN, three sisters, Vangie (Reinhold) Schumacher, Leone Armantrout, and Becky (Jerry) Pike 16 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Lavera Rall, one brother Johnny Rath and one grandson Gregory.
Honorary Casket Bearers will be all of Robert’s grandchildren.

HARLAN E. ALWIN
The funeral service for Harlan E. Alwin, 57, Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Saturday, October 31, 2009 at First Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Gary Wileman officiating. Harlan died Wednesday, October 28, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.
Visitation will be from 4-7pm, Friday, with family present from 6-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.
Harlan E. Alwin was born to Albert & Clarice (Gutormson) Alwin on December 17, 1951 at Aberdeen, SD. This is the area where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School with the Class of 1970. After graduating from Vo Tech in Watertown, Harlan began working as a motorcycle mechanic.
On November 5, 1976, Harlan married Lana Drager at Aberdeen. They made their home in Aberdeen and Harlan worked for 3M for thirty-one years.
Harlan was a member of First Assembly of God Church. He was an avid car and motorcycle enthusiast. Harlan’s greatest joy was being a Grandpa, cherishing every moment he was able to spend with Haden, his shining star, and his family.
Grateful for having shared Harlan’s life are his wife, Lana, Aberdeen, daughter, Shawna (Korey) Dosch, Sioux Falls, and grandson, Haden Dosch

MARGARET L. BARR
Margaret L. Barr, 82, Aberdeen, died Monday, October 26, 2009 at ManorCare Health Services at Aberdeen.
Arrangements are pending with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.
MARIE E. PETERSON
The funeral service for Marie E. Peterson, 83, of Aberdeen, will be at 2:00 pm Friday October 30, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Tom Holslag officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Marie died Saturday, October 17, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Thursday October 29th at the funeral home.
JAMES MICHAEL LEMER
Funeral service for James Michael Lemer, 64, of Aberdeen will be 10:00 am, Friday, October 30, 2009 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. Pastor Jon Damaska, officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24. James died Sunday, October 25, 2009 at his home.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm Thursday with family present from 4-7pm at the funeral home.
James Michael Lemer, son of Matthew and Rose (Harr) Lemer was born on July 13, 1945 at Isabel, SD. He was raised and attended school in the Isabel area, graduating from Isabel High School in 1963. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in March of 1966 and returned home for a short time prior to moving to Aberdeen.
He was united in marriage to Joyce Bertsch on August 3, 1968 at Aberdeen. James began working for Mickelson Implement and also worked as a hay grinder and drove truck for a short time. He then began working for Ackerman Welding in Aberdeen where he worked for many years as a salesman. He retired in 1992.
James will always be remembered for his willingness to lend a helping hand to those who were in need. During his free time he enjoyed doing body work and spent many hours at Randy’s Auto. He also enjoyed playing cards. His greatest joy was being a grandpa, cherishing every moment he was able to spend with his two granddaughters.
He was a member of Harris-Dennis American Legion Post #149 at Mellette.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, two daughters, Lisa (Rick) Kunkle of Tea, SD and Amy (Chris) Sayler of Mound, MN, three brothers, Francis Lemer of Rapid City, Larry Lemer of Ridgecrest, CA and David Lemer of Aberdeen, four sisters, Rosemary (Harvey) Greenfield of Rapid City, Patsy Clark, Cathy (Roger) Feickert and Carol Aberle all of Aberdeen, and two granddaughters, Reahl and Madison Kunkle.
He is preceded in death by his parents, step father and three brothers.
DARREL HINZ
The funeral service for Darrel Hinz, 72, of Westport, SD will be 10:30 am, Wednesday, December 9th, 2009 at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Pastor Jais Tinglund officiating. Burial will be at Westport Cemetery, Westport, SD. Darrel died Thursday December 3rd at Sanford Health, Sioux Falls, SD.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm Tuesday, December 8th, with family present from 5-7pm and a prayer service at 7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, SD.
Darrel Hinz was born January 14, 1937 to Walter and Florence (Nelson) Hinz at Westport, SD. He grew up near Westport, SD where he attended school.
In 1958, Darrel went to work for Ferguson Construction of Mitchell. On November 1st, 1959, Darrel married Darlene Walther at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. Darrel worked for Schesleys and BrownLee Construction of Watertown while continuing to farm near Westport. This is where he and Darlene raised their four children. Some winters were spent working in Phoenix, Arizona and El Central, California for an organic fertilizer company to further support his family.
Darrel was very sociable and enjoyed attending local auction sales, shooting pool, playing cards, and having coffee with friends. He enjoyed working on the farm and spending time with his pheasant hunting friends. Darrel enjoyed stock-car racing, NFL Football, and NASCAR. Above all, Darrel enjoyed time with his children of whom He and Darlene are very proud of.
Grateful for sharing Darrel’s life are his wife Darlene, sons David (Lisa) Hinz, Darwin (Crystal) Hinz, Dennis (Becky) Hinz, all of Wesport, daughter DeeAnn (Carlton) Job, Aberdeen, brother Lavern Hinz, of Westport, and sister Ardel (Roger) Mast, of Florence OR, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding Darrel in death were his parents Walter and Florence, brother Elroy Hinz, and sister Ardys Artz.
