Leona Ruth Rieck

Services for Leona Ruth Rieck, 84, Warner, SD are 11:00 am Monday, January 4, 2010, in St. John Lutheran Church at Warner. Pastor Joanne Nagele will officiate. Burial will be in the Warner Township Cemetery. Leona died Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be 2-4 pm Sunday with a prayer service at 4:00 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Leona Ruth Lowitz was born April 1, 1925 in Aberdeen, SD to John and Bertha (Papke) Lowitz. She attended Aberdeen Public Schools and then moved near Warner, SD. She graduated from Warner High School. She married Raymond R. Rieck on October 2, 1943, at Ortonville, MN. They made their home on several farms in the Mansfield and Warner areas. Leona and Ray moved into Warner in 1950 where they lived until they moved to Aberdeen in 1995. They celebrated 54 wonderful years together. Ray passed away in 1997 and their son, Randy passed away in 2003.

After moving from Warner, Leona lived at the Homestead and then Bethesda.

She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Warner. She belonged to many Bible Study groups and held many offices within the church and community. She was also a Sunday school teacher and directed the Jr. Choir and Mission Band for many years. She was a member of the Senior Choir and had a love of music. Leona worked at Malchows and then Tempo in Aberdeen.

She was a past member of the Warner Area Senior Citizens, a past officer of the PTA and a charter member of the Warner Young Mother’s Club and the Rieck-Morgan Legion Auxiliary.

She was a member of several extension clubs including the Mansfield Busy Bees and the Warner Merry Workers. She also was a 4-H leader.

Honorary Pallbearers will be LaVanche Van Stone, Arleen Jarvis, Larry Braun & Chuck Seaman.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren: Brent (Kristina) Antonen of Sioux Falls, Nathan (Lauren) Antonen of Arlington, Summer Wendell of Pierre, Stefan Rieck of Pierre, Josh Rieck of Sioux Falls, Kanya Rieck of Rapid City, Lindsey Rieck of Denver, CO, Megan Rieck of Warner, Stephanie Rieck of Aberdeen and Derek Rieck of Warner.

Ushers will be Doug Rogers, Dave Jarvis, Roger O. Roth and Brian Kendall.

Grateful for having shared Leona’s life are one daughter, Joan (Marv) Antonen of Arlington, SD, two sons, John (Deb) Rieck of Warner, SD, Richard (Kathy) Rieck of Rapid City, SD and one daughter-in-law Lynette Rieck of Warner, 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her son, three sisters, and six brothers.

RONALD JOHN “JACK” GUBIN

The funeral service for Ronald John “Jack” Gubin, 75, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 11:00 am, Friday, January 1, 2010 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Stratford American Legion Post 207. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, SD. Jack died Wednesday December 30 at his home in Aberdeen after a courageous, four year battle with cancer.

Visitation is 1-7pm Thursday, December 31, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Ronald John “Jack” Gubin was born on July 19th, 1934 to Frank and Mary (Snover) Gubin in Aberdeen. His family lived on a farm near Stratford and later moved to a farm near Bath where Jack graduated from Bath High School in 1952.

After high school Jack enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Korea. After returning from Korea, he joined his brother Bill and his mother on the farm they purchased near Stratford.

On November 4, 1961 Jack married Marjorie Sharon Howell in Aberdeen, SD. In 1964 Jack and Marge moved to the farm near Stratford that they would call home for the next 43 years until they moved to Aberdeen in 2007.

Jack was a lifelong farmer and a huge proponent of rural business and the Cooperative system. Jack loved the Stratford Community and was a part of many local organizations there including East Rondell Township, First Presbyterian Church, and the Oakwood Cemetery Board. Some of the organizations Jack had the most pride serving on were the American Legion of Stratford, an organization from which he recently received a plaque for 50 years of service and the South Dakota Wheat Growers, where Jack served on their Board of Directors for 21 years, 11 years of which he served as the board president. Toward the end of his farming career and into his retirement, Jack became very active in the Brown County Old Time Tractor Pullers Association. He also attended coffee in Stratford following his move to Aberdeen, which continued to be the highlight of his day. Jack was a member of First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen.

Jack was very dedicated to his family. Thankful for having shared his life are his wife Marge, Aberdeen, his son Ron (Kathy) Gubin, Warner, SD, his daughter Jodi (Mike) Jurgens, Dakota Dunes, SD, and one sister, Eldora Ellis, North Platte, NE. Jack’s special pride was his grandchildren: Aaron Peterson, Chad Peterson, Brian Peterson, Darin Gubin, Savana Jurgens, Aidana Jurgens, and Albina Jurgens.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, brother, William Gubin, and four sisters: Clayonne Wood, Arlene Bartz, Dorothy Snover and Mildred Wilke.

Ivan J. Dixon

The service for Ivan J. Dixon, 95, Aberdeen, will be 1:30pm, Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will be at Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery. Ivan died Saturday, December 26, at his home.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Wednesday with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Ivan J. Dixon was born August 11, 1914 in Britton, SD to Joseph & Marie (Hovrud) Dixon. As small children, they moved to Aberdeen. As a teen, Ivan helped his father on the farm. After high school, Ivan trained to be a machinist and in the winter months he worked for K.O. Lee.

On August 3, 1940, Ivan married Marie Bennett in Ipswich. They bought a home close to his dad, where Ivan farmed with his cousin Julian, mostly small grain and raised cattle. To this union was added three children. On October 12, 1957, he married LaVerne (Wells) Busch, and together they had two children. Ivan continued to farm until he turned ninety-one years old.

Ivan was a lifetime member of the Moose. He loved dancing, baseball and was a big Minnesota Twins fan. Ivan enjoyed watching car and motorcycle races. He also loved to go to tractor pulls.

Grateful for having shared Ivan’s life are his children, Diane (Keith) French, Patty Wilms, Tamara Dixon, Gayle Zelenka, Gary Busch, Diane (Gary) Zahalka, Cheryl Orman, twenty grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, LaVerne, children, Gerald “Jerry” Dixon, Karl Dixon, grandson, Randy Wilms.

JAMES EDWARD HAMILTON

Funeral service for James Ed Hamilton, 81, Aberdeen, will be 11:00 am, Thursday, December 31, 2009 at First United Methodist Church at Aberdeen. Pastor Eldon Reich will officiate. Cremation will follow the funeral service. James died December 25, 2009 at his home.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Dr. James E. Hamilton is retired from the U.S. Public Health Service and the health care industry after thirty-seven years in the uniformed services. He had been a licensed optometrist for thirty-five years and had served thirty years active duty in different services.

Dr. Hamilton was born on June 30, 1928 to Edgar & Zula (Downs) Hamilton and was reared near Trenton, Tennessee. After a tour of duty in the Marine Corps following World War II, he studied for his Doctor of Optometry degree at Southern College of Optometry, Memphis, Tennessee. His Master’s Degree in Physiological Optics was earned at Indiana University. He received his Master of Public Health degree at the University of Texas at Houston.

He served as a Reserve Officer in the U.S. Air Force before entering active duty in the U. S. Public Health Service. During the Air Force Reserve period, he served as a clinical optometrist in a number of Air Force hospitals in the mainland U.S.A. and Alaska and as a research optometrist at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. One of his research projects was the study of effects of flash blindness encountered in the aircraft cockpit. He later served as a manager at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center where he was also personal optometrist to the astronauts during the lunar landing Apollo programs. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for service in the 9806th Air Reserve Bomber Squadron, Ellington AFB, Texas. He also served three years on the teaching staff of the University of Houston, where he was an Assistant Professor and Chief of Community Optometry Clinics.

He had been Chief of the Optometry Branch, Indian Health Service, Aberdeen, South Dakota since 1974. He holds the grade of 0-6 as a regular commissioned officer of the U.S. Public Health Service and was the Senior Consultant for Optometry for the entire Indian Health Service from 1976 to 1983. He was a lifetime member of the American Optometric Association and had served on the Federal Service Optometry Committee. He had been a member of the American Academy of Optometry for many years

Mrs. Hamilton is the former Priscilla Ruth LaGrandier of Brooklyn, N.Y. They met while she was on active duty as an Air Force nurse at Homestead AFB Florida. She is a retired Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

They have made South Dakota their permanent home where he also farmed in Groton for thirteen years and moved to Aberdeen in 1991. He also briefly owned an auctioneering service, “Farmers Auction Service” will provide farm, household, and business auction services in both North and South Dakota.

The Hamiltons were members of the Aberdeen area Old Time Fiddlers, and later joined Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association (BOTMA) and performed at Bluegrass festivals in the Midwest. They were members of First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. He was an avid genealogist.

He is survived by his wife, Priscilla, aunt, Polly Raines, Trenton, TN, several nieces and nephews.

Timothy “Tim” H. Ellingson

Public committal service for Timothy “Tim” H. Ellingson, 47, Aberdeen, will be 11:00 am, Monday, December 28, 2009 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen. Pastor Mary Anne Nelson-Loefke will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Timothy died Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab following a courageous battle with cancer. Following his wishes, no funeral service will be held.

Timothy H. Ellingson was born on March 1, 1962 at Fargo, ND. He was adopted by Warren and Betty (Nelson) Ellingson at the age of two and half months. At a young age he moved with his family to Aberdeen. This is where he was raised and attended school, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School with the class of 1980. Following his high school graduation he attended Radio School of Broadcasting in Minneapolis.

He worked in the Aberdeen area as a radio sports broadcaster and also worked for many years at both the Country Kitchen and Millstone Family Restaurant at Aberdeen. For a short time he was employed at the Aberdeen American News as a dispatcher.

Timothy was an avid sports fan who had a great passion for Minnesota Vikings football and Minnesota Twins baseball.

Grateful for having shared Timothy’s life are his mother Betty Rall of Aberdeen, two sons Kevin and Justin, two daughters, Malynn and Taryn, one brother, Thomas (Miranda) Ellingson, one sister, Marie Schneider, two step-sisters JoAnn (Dale) Moench and Karen (Norley) Meidinger, several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his ex-wife Holly.

He is preceded in death by his father Warren Ellingson and step-father Ed Rall.

EMMA HEUPEL

The funeral service for Emma Heupel, 94, of Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Monday, December 21, 2009 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Battey officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Emma died Friday, December 18, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 2-7pm, Sunday, December 20, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Emma Bender was born March 8, 1915 to Frederick and Katherina (Guthmiller) Bender at rural Long Lake, SD. She grew up on a farm three miles south of Long Lake and attended country school in this area.

Emma married Edwin Heupel on October 20, 1938. They made their home northwest of Leola, and farmed until 1959, when they moved to Aberdeen. Emma worked at Mercury Cleaners for many years. She then worked for St. Luke’s Hospital in the linen room where she was head seamstress for twenty-six years. Edwin died October 26, 1985. In the fall of 1987, Emma moved to Colorado Springs, CO to be near two of her sons and their families. In October 2004, Emma moved back to Aberdeen where she resided at the Homestead.

Emma was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and belonged to Ladies Aide. Emma loved music and was part of the church choir and quartet. She enjoyed being out in her garden and crocheting. Emma also enjoyed baking for others especially during the Christmas season.

Grateful for having shared Emma’s life are her three sons, Merle (Darlene) Heupel, of Aberdeen, Larry (Lynn) Heupel, of Ocala, FL, and Reno (Tillie) Heupel, of Colorado Springs, CO, nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, and four sisters.

ALBENA KEMPF

Service for Albena L. Kempf, 89, of Aberdeen and formerly of Leola, SD will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, February 20, 2010 at St. James Lutheran Church at Leola. Pastor Erik Swanson officiating. Burial in Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen. Albena died on Tuesday, February 16 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1:00-7:00 pm Friday, February 19, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen with family present from 4:00-6:00 pm.

Albena Hoffman daughter of Carl and Margaret (Rath) Hoffman was born on October 9, 1920 on the family farm near Leola. She was raised on the family farm and attended country school through the 8th grade.

Albena was united in marriage to Ervin Kempf on November 30, 1941 at Hope Lutheran Church near Long Lake, SD. They settled on a farm eleven miles west of Leola where they spent 41 years farming together until they retired from farming in 1982. They continued living on the farm until 1998 when they began making their home at Davis Court in Aberdeen. This is where she made her home for the next 11 years. Albena’s beloved husband died on March 8, 2000.

Albena was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Leola. She loved the outdoors and greatly enjoyed her time on the farm. She spent countless hours visiting with her friends and will always be remembered for her love of music and studying the Bible.

Grateful for having shared her life are one son, Dr. Carrold (Anne) Kempf of Washington, IN, two sisters, Alma Bauer of Burbank, CA and Eldora (Melvin) Morrison of Aberdeen, one brother, Albert (Marilyn) Hoffman of Aberdeen, three grandsons, Nathan (Renae) Kempf of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Joshua (Libby) Kempf of Biddeford, Maine, and Aaron Kempf of Atlanta, Georgia, one granddaughter, Rachel (Christopher) Gschwend of Olympia, Washington and one great granddaughter Lilly Kempf.

Albena was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister-in-law Janice Hoffman and brother-in-law Herbert Bauer.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

Orville Schlichting

The service for Orville Schlichting, 86, of Stratford, SD will be 10:00am, Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Stratford Community Center with Pastor Elizabeth Johnson officiating. Burial will be at East Rondell Cemetery near Stratford with military graveside rites by the Stratford American Legion Post #207. Orville died Saturday February 13, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Groton, SD.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

Orville Otto Schlichting was born June 12, 1923 at Stratford, SD to William and Anna (Pagel) Schlichting. In 1936 Orville’s father passed away, so his family moved to Groton, SD. He began attending country school, but was held back following his first year because he could only speak German. He continued his schooling and graduated from Groton High School with the class of 1943. In early 1945 Orville was deployed overseas with the United States Navy.

Orville married Violet Wagner at Webster, SD. She passed away in June of 1972. Orville was last employed as a farmer with Jon & Loren Locken. He was a member of the Stratford American Legion Post #207.

Orville is survived by sisters-in law Denie Swingler Schlichting and Evelyn Schlichting, and his long time friends, Stan Monson, Jon and Loren Locken and many friends from the Groton and Stratford communities.

EDWIN WIEDEBUSH

The funeral service for Edwin Henry Wiedebush, 99, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mansfield, with Pastor Lloyd Redhage officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Mansfield. Edwin went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 24, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Edwin Henry Wiedebush was born November 6, 1910 on the family farm west of Mansfield, SD to Fred & Minnie (Steigelmeier) Wiedebush. He was educated in a country school for eight years. Later he attended the Aberdeen Business College, then returned to the farm with his brothers, Fred & Carl.

In 1937, he married Irma Schuchhardt. In the fall of 1942, they purchased a farm north of Mansfield. During the years there, he faithfully served in his church, Trinity Lutheran , where he had been baptized and confirmed, in his youth. He was a Sunday school teacher, elder for six years, Sunday school superintendent for twenty years, and a member of the Men’s Club. His life centered on his church, family and farm. He remained on the farm until 1999. Edwin, Irma, and son, Robert, traveled extensively. For their fiftieth wedding anniversary their children honored them with a trip to Europe.

In April of 1999, they moved to Aberdeen. In December 2005, they moved to the Bethesda Towne Square. The following April, Edwin became a resident of Bethesda Home of Aberdeen. Edwin was a gentle, loving and devoted husband to Irma for over seventy-two years.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Irma, children, Eugene (Ellen), Mansfield, David (Fely), Olympia, WA, Diane (Jerry) Bowe, Altoova, WI and Robert, Aberdeen, grandchildren, Dawn Moulton, Brian Wiedebush, Laurie Chevallier, Sarah Janssen, Lea Munar; six great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Dolores Harty, Marjorie Wiedebush, several nieces & nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters.
