GEROLD “GARY” RYCHLIK

The funeral service for Gerold “Gary” Rychlik, 66, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 11:00am, Monday, March 22, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Winfried Schroeder officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Gerold died Monday, March 15, at his home in Aberdeen.

Gerold Lee Rychlik was born on February 4, 1944 at Bismarck, ND to Rudolph “Rudy” and Mabel (Bruggerman) Rychlik. He attended country school in Stutsman County and later in Tappan, ND. After school, he worked on the family farm and helped other farmers in the area. On May 10, 1963, he married LaVerle Binder at Steele, ND. He worked for various construction Companies and in 1969 they moved to Aberdeen. He worked for Larson Teigen Construction Company and continued with Larson Construction Company until 1991. He then worked for Jacobs Construction Company until 2002, when he retired. LaVerle died on August 21, 2003.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Eagle’s Club FOE. “Gramps” loved his hunting and fishing expeditions. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his late wife, daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all of their friends. Gramps always looked forward to Wednesday night family dinners, visits from his niece, Bonnie (Tom) and many special family get togethers. Gramps was especially fond of his grandson whom he raised like his own and taught him everything he knows and his granddaughter who looked after him.

Grateful for having shared Gary’s life are his daughter, Brenda (Mike) Pigors, Aberdeen, grandson, Travis (Jessica) Rychlik, granddaughter, Christina Voeller (Ron Hagen), great grandchildren, Trevan & Cordel Rychlik, Skylar & Sebastian Hagen, niece, Bonnie (Tom) Srnsky, brother, Roger Rychlik, sisters, Alana Rychlik, Sandy Krause, and Leona Rychlik.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Rudoph and Mabel and his wife, LaVerle.

CINDY VILHAUER

Funeral service for Cindy Vilhauer, 44, of Aberdeen will be 2:00pm, Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church at Aberdeen. Pastor Winfried J. Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery at Roscoe on a later date. Cindy died Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital at Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm on Friday, March 19, 2010 with family present from 5-7pm and a prayer service at 6:00 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Cynthia Joy Vilhauer, daughter of Alvin and Ella (Haar) Vilhauer, was born on November 14, 1965 at Eureka, SD. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Roscoe, SD on November 25, 1965. In January of 1977, Cindy began making her home in Aberdeen.

Cindy attended school at Lincoln School in Aberdeen graduating in the spring of 1986. At this time she began working at the Adjustment Training Center until the time of her death.

Grateful for having shared Cindy’s life are two brothers, Kenny Vilhauer of Hosmer, SD and Aaron (Nina) Vilhauer of Mina, SD, and two sisters, Carol (Dennis) Hettich of Roscoe and Diane (Herman) Schumacher of Aberdeen and Herreid, SD.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister Joan Vilhauer and one infant brother Calvin Vilhauer.

Honorary casket bearers will be all of Cindy’s nieces, Kathy Gaub, Lori Mitzel, Lisa Ortega and Holly Schumacher.

Casket bearers will be all of Cindy’s nephews Jeff Vilhauer, Kelly Vilhauer, Neil Hettich, Kirk Hettich, David Schumacher, Loren Vilhauer, Lance Vilhauer, Jason Vilhauer and Darin Vilhauer.

Junior casket bearer will be Clayton Randall II

ARTHUR "ART" KIRSCHENMANN

Funeral service for Arthur “Art” Kirschenmann, 84, of Aberdeen will be 11:00am, Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Plymouth Congregational UCC at Aberdeen. Burial at a later date at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arthur died Monday, March 15, 2010 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Friday, March 19, 2010, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Arthur, son of Gottlieb and Magdalena (Bertsch) Kirchenmann, was born on January 20, 1926 on the Gottlieb F. Bertsch Homestead (McPherson County) southeast of Eureka, SD. He attended a nearby rural school and graduated from high school. In 1945, Arthur moved to Aberdeen. He attended Northern State Teachers College. Arthur worked for Montgomery Ward, National Food Store, Malchow Furniture Co., Traffic Control Dept. for the city of Aberdeen, and for Aberdeen Motors, retiring in 1988.

On March 6, 1949, Arthur married Alvina Utecht, of Colharbor, ND. Art and Alvina had one son, Marlin. Alvina died May 11, 2008.

Arthur enjoyed bowling with Alvina in the mixed league, watching sports on television, attending NSU Wolves basketball games and helping his granddaughters with their homework when they were in grade school.

Grateful for having shared Arthur’s life are his son, Marlin (Diana) Kirschenmann, Aberdeen, two granddaughters, Kelli (Jeff) Simonsen, Yankton, Carisa Kirschenmann, Aberdeen, and two great grandchildren, Brynn and Brody Simonsen, Yankton, brother, Julius (Mavis) Kirschenmann, Aberdeen.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife and five brothers, Karl, Emanuel, Henry, Edward and Ray.

BILLY K. JENSEN

The funeral service for Billy K. Jensen, 74, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00pm, Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen with Military Honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24. Billy died Saturday, March 13 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Monday, March 15, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Billy Kieth Jensen was born on December 19, 1935 to Rosella Keup. He grew up on farms around Aberdeen. Bill attended a rural one room school. In 1958, Bill entered the U.S. Army and in 1960 he was honorably discharged in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He then returned to Aberdeen to start farming. During the winter season, Bill delivered fuel for Mobile Oil for many years. Bill married Joyce Criddle on October 12, 1962 at Evangelical United Brethren in Aberdeen.

Bill was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for many years. He was an usher at the old church in Aberdeen. Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting and collecting toy tractors and combines. Bill also enjoyed restoring tractors. His family was very important and special to him. One of his favorite things to do was to tell stories to his grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Bill’s life are his wife of 47 years, Joyce, of Aberdeen, and his nine children, John (Lisa) Jensen, Richard (Sonia) Jensen, Joel (Sarah) Jensen, Rhonda (Ron) Hilsendeger, Keith (Becky) Jensen, Lisa (Thad) Olson, Molly (Mike) Ringgenberg, Jill (Chad) Nelson and Alan (Kari) Jensen, half-sister, Nancy Jensen, half-brothers, Dale Jensen, and Wayne Jensen. Bill will also be missed by his 23 grandchildren, special family friends Don and Darlene Schumacher and family and Jim Brasher, and his beloved dog Bubbles. Bill was preceded in death by his mother Rosella Jensen and his half-sister Carol Rabine. Honorary casket bearers will be all of Bill’s grandchildren and the Schumacher family.

LaVera Joyce Crouch

The funeral service for LaVera Joyce Crouch, 69, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, with Pastor Winfried J. Schroeder officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. LaVera died Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab, Aberdeen, SD.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Monday, March 15, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

LaVera Joyce Kilber was born on July 25, 1940, at Aberdeen, SD to Edgar and Gertrude (Haar) Kilber. This is where she started school. LaVera was Baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Roscoe SD and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. In 1949, the family moved to the Forbes, ND area where she continued her education. In 1954, LaVera moved to Aberdeen and was employed at various jobs. She married James Crouch on October 17, 1970 at Aberdeen. LaVera continued to make Aberdeen her home. LaVera enjoyed going out for coffee. She loved to spend time with her family and cherished the time she spent taking care of her granddaughter, Michaella.

Grateful for having shared LaVera’s life are her son, Steve (Kim Schwan) Crouch and her granddaughter, Michaella Crouch, of Aberdeen, four brothers, Jerome (Sharon) Kilber, of Peoria, AZ, Gary Kilber, of Phoenix, AZ, Derrell (Jean) Kilber, of Olathe, KS and Paul (Cindy) Kilber of Crystal Lake, IL and many nieces and nephews.

LaVera was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Gertrude and her grandparents.

Arlene Gerharter

Memorial services for Arlene Gerharter, 92, Aberdeen, are 3:00pm, Thursday, March 11, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church, Aberdeen, Pastor Tom Holslag officiating. Burial will be private at Riverside Memorial Park. Arlene H. (Kettering) Gerharter died peacefully on March 6, at Bethseda Home of Aberdeen following several months of declining health. She had recently celebrated her 92nd birthday on February 15.

Arlene Kettering was born February 15, 1918 to Elmer & Inez Kettering and raised near Mellette, South Dakota. Arlene enjoyed a rich life, full of the joys and disappointments of raising four children, a 65 year marriage with her husband Marvin, who preceded her in death by six years. She was involved in many activities revolving around the First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen and various social clubs. She worked as a secretary for many years in the Aberdeen Public Schools. She enjoyed extensive RV traveling in her retirement years, her many dear friends, and hobbies as varied as square dancing, ceramics, doll collecting, sewing, genealogical research, and flower gardening.

Marvin and Arlene farmed for many years on the outskirts of Aberdeen. Her home was always open to the many friends that she and Marvin would welcome from drop in visits to holiday dinners. Her large farm house, which she loved and carefully maintained, was always one of the most important things in her life. Like her mother, Arlene was a stylish dresser throughout her life, even to the end, when she was perhaps the only resident at Bethseda Home who was always in a dress, with jewelry and shoes to match.

Arlene was a saver with a keen sense of history. She became the repository for the family, especially the Kettering and Slack families, one of the pioneer settler families of Spink County, safeguarding boxes of photos, heirlooms, diaries and letters.

In addition to her husband Marvin, Arlene was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth, killed in a car accident in 1965, her parents Elmer and Inez Kettering; a brother, Clifford, and a sister-in-law Grayce. Survivors include three remaining children Sheryl (husband Jim) in Centreville, Virginia, Gary in Waialua, Hawaii, and Rick, in San Francisco; grandson Chad (wife Stephanie) and great-grandson Landon of Ashburn, Virginia; brother-in-law Gordon (wife Marge)in Mesa, Arizona; and sister-in-law Doris Gerharter in Aberdeen; 8 nephews and 7 nieces.

The family wishes to deeply thank the wonderful and incredible care-givers at Bethseda Towne Square and Home, North Plains Hospice, super-friends Delbert and Carol Lowe and Doris Gerharter. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family at Rick Gerharter, PO Box 420268, San Francisco, CA 94142 with disbursement to First Presbyterian Church of Aberdeen and Bethseda Home of Aberdeen.

CLARENCE GEORGE VILHAUER

The funeral service for Clarence G. Vilhauer, 84, of Black Hawk, SD, formerly of Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen, with Military Honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Clarence died Saturday, March 6, at Rapid City Regional Hospice.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm with family present from 5-7pm, Tuesday, March 9, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Clarence George Vilhauer was born April 19, 1925 to Emanuel and Carolina (Junkert) Vilhauer near Leola, McPherson County, SD. He attended school at Roscoe, SD. After his education, Clarence worked on the family farm until 1944 when he moved to Aberdeen. He worked at various jobs in plumbing, heating and carpentry, until he entered the U.S. Army. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he returned to Aberdeen in 1950 and started his own business, Vilhauer Plumbing and Heating. He owned and operated his business for 38 years. After he sold his business and retired he continued to live in Aberdeen.

Clarence married Marcella E. Voegele on June 10, 1954 at Aberdeen, SD. On December 24, 1997, Marcella passed away. Then in 1999, Clarence married Edna Roth. They lived in various places, eventually settling in Black Hawk.

Clarence was a member of First Baptist Church, Aberdeen. He enjoyed fishing, doing puzzles and going to basketball games. Later in life he wrote numerous books and had them published.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Edna, of Black Hawk, his two sons, Douglas L. (Kathy) Vilhauer and David A. (Lauretta) Vilhauer, three grandchildren, Mariah Vilhauer, Isaiah Vilhauer and Aimee Vilhauer, all of Aberdeen, three step sons, Earl (Nikki) Darling, of Johnstown, CO, Earnest (Reyna) Darling, of Greeley, CO and Frank (Penny) Darling, of Rapid City, his brother Fred Vilhauer, and two sisters, Alvina Feickert and Ruby Wiley, all of Aberdeen.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marcella, two brothers, Eugene and Robert, and one brother in infancy, Albert.

Harry L. Adam

The service for Harry L. Adam, 65, of Aberdeen will be 1:30pm, Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church, with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Leola American Legion Post #78. Harry died Sunday, March 7th, at his home.

Visitation is from 1-7pm, Wednesday, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Harry L. Adam was born February 21, 1945 in rural Leola, SD, to Gottlieb & Emma (Burrer) Adam. He attended country school at Blaine Township. After graduating from Leola High School, he entered the US Airforce. Harry attended Black Hills State University, graduating with a Masters Degree. He began teaching in Kemmerer Wyoming for several years. After retiring from teaching in 1992, Harry returned to Aberdeen and began working for Northern Rural Development for many years.

Harry was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Leola American Legion Post #78. He was an avid reader and gardener. Harry enjoyed going to auctions and collecting antiques. He loved and taught History and was the family historian. He was interested in researching, caring for and maintaining rural cemeteries in McPherson and Edmunds County.

Grateful for having shared Harry’s life are his sister, Esther E. Adam-Gienger, brother, Milton (Doris) Adam, sister-in-law, Regina (Elmer) Adam, seven nephews, and eight nieces.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Elmer, Helmuth, Milbert, Raymond, and two nephews.

SR. VIRGINIA CALMUS

Sister Virginia Calmus, 86, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died on March 5, 2010 at Presentation Convent.

Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Virginia Calmus will be Monday, March 8, 2010, at 10:00 a.m., in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD. A Scriptural Wake service will be Sunday, March 7, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Reverend Joseph Sheehan will be celebrant and homilist.

Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, in charge of arrangements.

Virginia was born February 10, 1924 at Howard, SD to Catherine (Tessman) and Philip Calmus. She received her early education in Howard and graduated from St. Agatha’s High School, Howard in 1942. She attended Notre Dame Jr. College, Mitchell, SD where she received a Secretarial Diploma in 1944. Virginia (Sister Joelle) entered Presentation Convent September 8, 1946 and made her first profession of vows on August 10, 1949. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Northern State University in 1956 and in 1961, a MS Degree from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI. In 1985, Virginia studied at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, TX and became certified in chaplaincy and spiritual direction. She also studied at Notre Dame University, Notre Dame, IN and at the Center for Spiritual Development, Bird Island, MN.

She served for many years in education ministry across South Dakota and Montana. She also ministered in our hospitals, in parishes, and as a spiritual director at Presentation Convent. After retiring she continued to do mission effectiveness work for employees at Presentation Convent and College until 2005.

Memorials may be given to Presentation College Calmus Scholarship

Sister Virginia is survived by her community family of Presentation Sisters. A sister, Florence, Remsen, IA, a brother, George, Howard, SD and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Sister Phyllis Marie, PVBM and two brothers, Walter and William.

Nephews will serve as active casket bearers.

OLGA A. OLSON

The funeral service for Olga A. Olson, 82, of Aberdeen will be 1:30 pm, Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Olga died Friday, February 26, 2010 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be Friday March 5th from 1-7 pm with family present from 5-7 pm. A prayer service will follow at 7:00 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Olga Annette Sundlie was born November 19, 1927 to Olafand and Petra (Mikkelborg) Sundlie in Forman, ND. Olga was baptized, confirmed and married by Rev. K.O. Gjernes in the Lutheran faith. She married Dean H. Olson at Forman, ND on October 24, 1947. They lived in Ellendale, ND for two years, then moved to a farm in Brown County for 33 years. They attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Frederick, SD during this time.

Dean and Olga moved to Aberdeen in 1979 and joined Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Dean passed away on February 28, 1989 after a long struggle with cancer. Olga was active in various church groups, as well as craft and extension clubs. In her free time, Olga enjoyed reading, watching quiz shows and doing puzzles. She also found great joy in traveling.

Olga is survived by daughter Nancy Farmer of Watertown SD, son Dean (Pamela) Olson Jr. of Rapid City, SD, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, sisters Hazel Preble of Rutland ND, Phyllis Lee of Oakes ND, and brother Leif (Phyllis) Sundlie of Palm Springs, CA, sisters in law Ruth Hedges, Detroit MI, and many nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Dean, brothers Andrew and Clarence Sundlie, and sister Ethel.
