IRMA B. STEARNS

Funeral service for Irma B. Stearns, 78, of Hecla, SD will be 10:30 am, Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Hecla. Rev. Christen Prumm officiating. Burial will be at Hecla City Cemetery. Irma died Friday, February 26, 2010 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor at Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Tuesday, March 2, 2010 with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Irma B. Bretsch, daughter of Otto and Elsbeth (Lunow) Bretsch, was born on March 25, 1931 in Germany. This is where she was raised and attended school. In November of 1951, she immigrated with her sister to America. She settled on her uncle’s farm near Hecla. During this time she worked for several area families doing general house work.

She was united in marriage to Stanley Stearns on December 9, 1953 at Peace Lutheran Church near Hecla. They made their home on the Stearns family farm, where she remained until failing health forced a move to Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.

Irma was an avid gardener and took great pride in her flower beds. She loved cats and was known for her outstanding knitting skills. In her free time, Irma enjoyed bowling. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and was active in the LWML. Irma served as secretary for bowling leagues in past years.

Grateful for having shared Irma’s life are her husband, Stanley of Hecla, two sons, James (Linda) Stearns of Groton, and Rollin (Donna) Stearns of Hecla, nine grandchildren, Lester (Connie) Stearns, Stephanie (Mike Ewalt) Stearns and, Lauren (Jennifer) Stearns, Samantha (Andy) Jondahl, Celeste (Joe) Saylor, Michael Stearns, Susan (Nik) Zuhlsdorf, Scott Stearns and Trisha Stearns, six great grandchildren, Lyndsie Stearns, Abigail Stearns, Lane Jondahl, Kendra Saylor, Katarina Saylor and Logan Zuhlsdorf, three sisters, Hannelore Quandt, Edda Levine and Renate Hastings, one sister-in-law, Harriet Bretsch, cousin, Gerald Bretsch and close friends Karen and Orland Lunzman and Nancy and Ron Frohling.

Irma is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Rudy and Karl Bretsch, one sister Brunhilde Petermann, one grandson, Jordan Stearns and one granddaughter, Annette Stearns.

PAT (PATRICIA) CONLEY MEHLHAFF

Funeral service for Pat (Patricia) Conley Mehlhaff, 81, of Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Monday, March 1, 2010 at Our Savior Lutheran Church at Aberdeen. Pastor Jais Tinglund will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pat died Thursday, February 25, 2010 at ManorCare Heath Services of Aberdeen after a courageous battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen

Pat (Patricia) Conley, daughter of Coyd and Hilda (Iljana) Conley, was born on March 9, 1928 at Houghton, SD. She lived in Claremont, SD for several years before moving with her family to Frederick, SD. This is where she was raised and attended school, graduating from Frederick High School. After high school she worked for Super Value Wholesalers for nine years before raising her family.

Pat was united in marriage to Ray Mehlhaff on September 13, 1954. They made their home in Aberdeen. Pat became employed as a secretary at Lincoln Elementary in 1968, a job which she held and loved for 26 years, retiring in 1994.

Pat was an active member at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Aberdeen and participated in the Visiting Circle at the church. During her time at Lincoln Elementary, Pat became interested in developmentally disabled children and adults. For many years she served as treasurer for ARC. In her free time, Pat enjoyed crossword puzzles and spending time with her pets. She was an avid reader and her greatest joy was her four grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Pat’s life are her children, Cindy Mehlhaff of Aberdeen, Brad (Janan) Mehlhaff of New Hope, Minnesota, Paige Mehlhaff of San Diego, California, and Scott (Lisa) Mehlhaff of Sioux Falls, SD, one sister, Jeanette Johnson of Aberdeen, and four grandchildren, Rachel, Kevin, Christopher and Robert Mehlhaff.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one infant brother, brother Fenton Conley, sister Gladys English and sister Margie Marvel.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

DENNIS P. JOHNSON

Memorial service for Dennis Paul Johnson, 62, of Goodwin, SD and formerly of Aberdeen will be 2:00 pm, Friday, February, 26, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. Pastor Eldon Reich will officiate.

Dennis died Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Sanford Medical Center at Sioux Falls.

Dennis Paul Johnson, son of Elroy and Genevieve (Gerth) Johnson, was born on August 30, 1947 at Aberdeen. He grew up on the Johnson family farm near Aberdeen and attended Aberdeen Central High School, graduating with the class of 1965.

He was united in marriage to Dixie Hoyt on July 1, 1980 at Aberdeen. Together they made their home at Goodwin, SD where they resided at the time of his death.

Dennis was an avid outdoorsman. He greatly enjoyed turtle trapping and took great pride in his immaculate lawn. He will be remembered by many for his great sense of humor and his contagious smile.

Grateful for having shared Dennis’s life are his wife Dixie of Goodwin, SD, three sons, Sean (Jill) Grefe of Cold Springs, Minnesota, Don (Shannon Daugherty) Drager of Medford, Oregon and Scott (Crystal) Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD, one daughter, Nadine Mullen of Sioux Falls, SD, parents Elroy and Genevieve Johnson of Aberdeen, four grandsons, Jordan Johnson, Mason and Zavier Grefe, and Dallas Drager, four granddaughters, Erin Johnson, Paige, McKenzie and Skylar Mullen, two brothers, Charles (Jane) Johnson and Gordon (Karen) Johnson and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

WALLACE S. KING

Services for Wallace S. King, 87, Aberdeen are at 2 PM on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Sidney L. Smith, American Legion Post 24. Wallace died Friday, February 19, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

Wallace S. King was born on November 15, 1922, to George and Barbara (Lusk) King of Highmore, SD. He grew up in the area and graduated from Highmore High School in 1940. He attended Huron College until entering the US Army on December 1, 1942. He served in the European Theater during WWII and was honorably discharged on January 12, 1946. His military service to his country continued with the South Dakota National Guard for the next 20 years. Wally, as his friends knew him, attained the rank of Captain.

He married Lorraine Bertsch on June 25, 1948, in Hot Springs, SD. Wally worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital until his transfer to the Indian Health Service in Aberdeen during 1960. Wallace retired from federal service in 1979, but continued to live an active life working part time and volunteering for Meals on Wheels.

He bowled on numerous leagues, golfed, played bridge, and was active with the Aberdeen Senior Center. Wally was an expert pool player. He loved to hunt pheasants with his family and was an outstanding marksman. His passion for gardening has been passed on to his children and grandchildren. Wally was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Aberdeen.

He was devoted to his family, leaving them the best part of himself; faithfulness to God and each other, as well as the attributes of honesty and fairness. He loved a great meal, a good bargain, a funny story, but above all his wife, Lorraine.

Grateful for having shared Wallace’s life are his children: Carolyn “Kelly” (Lyle) Haselhorst, Faulkton, SD; Ronald (Marilyn) King, Clinton, IN; Kathryn (Dell) Petersen, Rapid City, SD; and Dianna (Gary) Kopetsky, Frederick, SD; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Drew, and one brother, Melvin King.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, his parents, one sister, and one great grandson.

The family prefers memorials to the Aberdeen Senior Center.

MILDRED HIEB

Funeral service for Mildred Hieb, 96, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1015 N. Highway 281, Aberdeen. Rev. William Lee Nelson-Loefke officiating. Burial at Ipswich City Cemetery. Mildred died Monday, May 24, 2010 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be 1-7pm, Friday, May 28, family present from 5-7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Mildred S. Hieb was born on March 1, 1914 to Henry and Augusta (Manska) Wietgrefe at Ipswich, SD. This is the area where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Ipswich High School in 1931.

Mildred married Walter Hieb on December 2, 1937 at Brainerd, MN. They made their home in Ipswich until moving to Selby, SD in 1941. After raising her children she served as a nutritionist at the Selby School. However, she spent most of her life doing volunteer work. For 25 years Mildred volunteered at the Selby Nursing Home as a “Grey Lady” and was also active in all the Church activities at St. John’s Lutheran Church. They moved to Mina, SD in 1989, where they helped build and were charter members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. They moved to Rapid City in 1994, where they were members of Atonement Lutheran Church, until her husband of 59 years passed away. At this time she moved back to Selby and in 2001 she began making her home in Aberdeen.

The joy of Mildred’s later years was spent rocking babies at the Bethesda Daycare Center in Aberdeen as part of the Foster Grandparent Program. In November of 2009, she moved into Bethesda Town Square and spent her last days at Bethesda Home, just down the hall from all the babies she rocked at the Daycare.

Grateful for having shared Mildred’s life are two daughters, Eldene Henderson of Rapid City and Verla Schumacher of Mina, one son Robert (Bev) Hieb of Rapid City, seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter Mariel, six brothers, one sister and one great grandson.

LARRY L. ANDERSON

The funeral service for Larry L. Anderson, 75, Aberdeen, will be 1:30pm, Monday, May 24, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Larry died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital.

Visitation is 2-7pm Sunday, May 23, with Masonic Service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home,1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen, SD.

Larry Louis Anderson was born on November 6, 1934 at Mitchell, SD to Roger V. and Lorraine M. (Demaray) Anderson. He attended elementary and middle school at Mitchell, SD. Larry graduated from Aberdeen Central High School, 1952. After graduation, he attended Northern State in Aberdeen for two years.

Larry married Phyllis J. Johannsen at Wilmot, SD on October 31, 1954. He began his employment with the South Dakota Department of Transportation in 1955 as office clerk and retired after 40 years of service as Aberdeen Region Materials & Design Engineer. Larry retired on January 13, 1995. For many years, Larry was an instructor in the AARP Driver Safety program. Larry was known for his dedication and work ethic. He enjoyed woodworking, leisurely time on his computer, and time with his family and grandkids.

Larry was a Life Member and past Master of Sunrise Lodge No. 211, A.F. & A.M. and was the current Secretary of that organization. Larry served as a past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of South Dakota 2005-2006. Larry was a Life Member and past High Priest of Aberdeen Chapter No. 14, R.A.M. and a member and past Commander of Damascus Commandry No. 10, Knights Templar. He was currently serving as Secretary of both organizations. Larry was a Life Member of Aberdeen Scottish Rite and was a member of the Aberdeen Yelduz Shrine. He was a member and past Sovereign of St. Simon Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine. Larry was a Life Member and past Patron of Minerva Chapter No. 5, Order of the Eastern Star and a past Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of South Dakota, O.E.S. in 1984. He was a Senior DeMolay and recipient of the DeMolay Legion of Honor and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Aberdeen for over 60 years.

Grateful for having shared Larry’s life are his wife, Phyllis of Aberdeen, children David L. (Diane) Anderson, of Independence, MN and Michele M. (Richard) Wrzos, of Big Lake, MN, his sister, Juanita Misslitz of Aberdeen, SD, brothers Richard (Rayola) Anderson of Black Hawk, SD and Robert (Karen) Anderson of Huron, SD, his grandchildren Sonja Anderson (Cory) Wahl, Michael Anderson, Holly Wrzos, and great grandchildren Brynn and Mya Wahl.

N. (NORMA) LUCILLE MITCHELL

The funeral service for N. (Norma) LuCille Mitchell, 86, Aberdeen, is 10am Saturday, May 22, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Eldon Reich and Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. LuCille went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation: 1-7pm Friday, May 21, with family present from 5-7pm and a prayer service at 7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

LuCille Knecht, daughter of Henry and Myrtle (Marlow) Knecht was born on November 15, 1923 near Houghton, SD. This is the area where she was raised and attended school, graduating from Hecla High School in 1941. She attended Northern Normal Teachers College, earning her teachers certificate in 1942. She taught for one year at a county school north of Claremont, SD prior to teaching for one year at the Loyalton Pubic School at Loyalton, SD.

She was united in marriage to Charlie Mitchell on September 3, 1943 at Houghton. They made their home on the Mitchell family farm near Houghton where they remained for many years and raised their family. LuCille was a wonderful cook and entertainer. Over the years she fed many friends and relatives and could always add another plate to the table for any unexpected guests.

LuCille was a loving wife and mother and cherished the time she spent with her family. She loved flowers and also enjoyed gardening and traveling. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years and also served as Bible School Director and teacher at both the Houghton and Aberdeen Wesleyan churches. LuCille was a member of the Shelby Friendship Club for over fifty years. She was also a member of the Houghton Three in One Extension Club. After retiring from life on the farm, they made their home in Aberdeen and enjoyed wintering in Mesa, AZ for 18 years.

Grateful for having shared LuCille’s life are her husband Charlie, Aberdeen, four children, Dennis (Laretta) Mitchell, Houghton, Marcy (Carroll) Stenseth, Rapid City, Curtis (Paula) Mitchell and Carson Mitchell both of Aberdeen, three sister-in-laws, Helen Knecht, MarGarett Knecht and Mary (Glenn) Jensen, brother-in-law, Gordon “Monty” (Helen) Tunby, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, cousin and good friend Alta Fetherhuff, Godson Michael Kampa and many nieces and nephews.

LuCille is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Wayne and Howard Knecht and sisters Frances Smith, Maryellen Tunby and Alice Marietta Knecht.

Casket bearers will be all of LuCille’s grandchildren Trish Rodahl and Tara Ihde, (Dennis) Tammra Allen and Lara Gengerke (Laretta), Christopher and Sarah Komomua, (Marcy) and Mallory and Alexander Mitchell, (Curtis).

Ushers will be Gary Cutler and Terry Ochs.

ROBERT SHEARN CLEMENSEN

Funeral service for Rob Clemensen, 80, Aberdeen and formerly of Brentford, SD will be 11:00am, Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at First United Methodist Church at Aberdeen. Pastor Tom Haggar will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens at Aberdeen. Rob died Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation will be from 1-7:00pm Monday, May 17, with family present from 5-7pm with a prayer service at 7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Robert Shearn Clemensen, son of Sam and Mary (Shearn) Clemensen was born on August 25, 1929 on the family farm near Brentford. He graduated from Brentford High School with the class of 1947. Rob attended SDSU for two years and then started his own farm in 1949.

He married Lois Carlson, his high school sweetheart, on November 25, 1950 at the Brentford Congregational Church. They made their home on a farm near Brentford where they raised their family until retiring to Aberdeen in 1990, but he continued helping his son on the farm.

Rob thoroughly enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, and golfing. He was a league golfer at Fischer Grove Golf Course in Redfield and later at Moccasin Creek Country Club in Aberdeen. Rob also enjoyed music, Bridge and spending time with his family. He and Lois enjoyed nearly thirty winters together in Mesa, AZ.

Rob was an active director on the South Dakota Wheat Growers Board for thirteen years, serving a portion of the time as vice president. He was a member of the Mason’s, Scottish Rite, and Plains Lions Club. Rob was a member of the Brentford Congregational Church, where he served as Deacon, and current member of First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Rob’s life are his wife, Lois of Aberdeen, one daughter, Jan (Erv) Schoppe of Blaine, MN, two sons, Lon of Sioux Falls and Hal (Terri) of Conde, SD, two brothers, Arlo (Betty) of Aberdeen and Alan (Bonnie) of Brentford, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Rob was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Myrna Gibney and Marge Goodwin.

ALICE NEREIM

The funeral service for Alice M. Nereim, 92, of Aberdeen, will be 2pm Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Alice died in her sleep on Wednesday, May 12, at Bethesda Parkside Retirement Community, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Arrangments by Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

Alice M. Hartberg was born on the Pfutzenreuter farm near Hecla, SD, on March 20, 1918 to Arvid and Minnie (Peterson) Hartberg. She was raised on the family farm near Langford and graduated from Langford High School.

Alice was married to the late Orlan J. Nereim, also of Langford. For a brief time Alice lived at Ft. Hood, Texas where Orlan was recovering from wounds received in WWII. Upon returning to South Dakota, and except for the five years she lived on her and her husband’s farm near Mina Lake, she lived in Aberdeen. She became one of the first residents at the Bethesda Apartments on 12th Ave. SE and, until her passing she was proud to be the longest resident there.

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she worked as an office clerk, a sales clerk and a bookkeeper; the latter at SPORTARAMA, owned by Orlan and his partner Orville Fenske. Mrs. Nereim taught Sunday school and was a 65 year member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Grateful for having shared Alice’s life are: two sons; Allan F. (Bonnie) Nereim of Cary, NC, and Monty K. Nereim of La Jolla, CA, her sister Myrtle Syhre of Aberdeen, four grandchildren; Allison Smith, Matthew A. Nereim, Matthew B. (Melissa) Nereim, and Melinda (Ryan) Raymond, seven great grandchildren; Isabella Smith, Natasha Smith, Madison Nereim, Maria Nereim, Shawn Chick, Casey Chick and Emily Raymond.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Orlan, and her brother, Raymond Hartberg.

Memorials may be sent to Bethlehem Lutheran Endowment or Bethesda Home of Aberdeen, Inc.
