Nellie Carda

LAKE ANDES -- Nellie Evelyn Carda, 87, Lake Andes, died Saturday (Oct. 12, 2002) at Lake Andes Healthcare Center.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Mark's Catholic Church, Lake Andes, with burial following in the church cemetery.

Visitation is from 2-8 p.m. today (Tuesday), with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, at the church.

The Clements-Wiese Funeral Home, Lake Andes, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born June 15, 1915, to Nels and Minnie (Christopherson) Nelson in rural Lake Andes. She attended grade school in rural Lake Andes. She married William G. Carda Aug. 12, 1935, in Lake Andes. They farmed in the Lake Andes area until William died Oct. 7, 1974. She then moved into Lake Andes.

She was a member of the St. Mark's Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, 500 Club, Fidelis and hobby clubs. She enjoyed playing cards, watching TV game shows, visiting with her family, dancing, fishing, quilting, baking, canning vegetables, ceramics and flowers.

She is survived by two sons: William (Mary) Carda, Lake Andes, and Terry (Joyce) Carda, Yankton; three daughters: Shirley (Leo) Dvorak, Lake Andes; Shari (Gary) Boetel, Lane Andes; and Bridget (Arden) Hanson, Elk Point; one brother, Fyle Nelson, Lake Andes; a son-in-law, Marvis Tronvold, Yankton; one daughter-in-law, Mary Rae Carda, Lake Andes; 24 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, one daughter, two brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren.

Darrel Young

BURKE -- Darrel Young, 82, of rural Burke died Wednesday (July 21, 2004) at the Avera Gregory Healthcare Center, Gregory.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Union Baptist Church, Burke, with burial in Graceland Cemetery, Burke.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today (Friday), with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Clausen Funeral Home, Burke.

Mary J. Hochstein

HARTINGTON, Neb. -- Mary J. Hochstein, 98, of Hartington, died on Saturday July 31, 2004 at Beverly Healthcare in Hartington, NE.

Funeral services will be Wednesday August 4, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fordyce with the Rev. Michael Schmitz officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Fordyce.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a rosary at 2:00 P.M. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. There will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will begin 1 hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the Church.

Pallbearers are Alan Arens, Kenneth Jensen, Scott Keiter, Loren Halgerson, Curt Goebel, Todd Hochstein, Jody Jensen and Clyde Arens.

Honorary pallbearers are Sr. Faith Roth, Sr. Erma Roth, Rita Sudbeck, Bonnie Jansen, Pat Stevens, Katie Kaiser.

Mary was born on March 10, 1905, in St. Helena to Joseph and Josephine (Becker) Suing. She grew up in the St. Helena area and married Rudolph J. Hochstein on April 24, 1928, at St. Helena. After their marriage they farmed in the Fordyce area until moving into Fordyce in 1974. Rudolph died on Oct. 14, 1984, at the age of 82.

Mary loved to read, garden, crochet, embroider and spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, the Guild, Catholic Daughters of America and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include 11 children and their spouses: LaVerne Arens, Hartington; Noreen and John Goebel, Lincoln; Inez Halgerson, Madison, South Dakota; Gerry J. and Frances Hochstein, Fordyce; Claudette and Tim Jensen, Hartington; Bernice and Richard Luehn, Audubon, MN; Leon and Mary Hochstein, Yankton; Jean Marie Schroeder, Lewiston, Idaho; Florence and Roger Maine, Spokane, Washington; Roger and Jeanne Hochstein, Yankton; Glen and Jo Hochstein, Tucson, AZ; 45 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Lavina Kramer, Hastings, NE, Felicitas Schmidt, St. Helena, NE.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 1 son Larry Hochstein; 2 grandchildren: Dustin and Rochelle Hochstein; 4 brothers: Hugo, Clarence, Arno and Ervin Suing; 4 sisters: Maxilinda Jansen, Roseann Hoebelheinrich, Adeline Suing and Alma Suing.

Ruby Pieper

Ruby Marie Pieper, age 76, of Yankton, passed away early Sunday morning, July 25, 2004, at the Heart Hospital of Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Riverview Park Reformed Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Rod Veldhuisen officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories, Yankton, SD.

Visitations will be 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a Scripture service at 7:00 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Bob Alink, Tony Ellis, Steve Frick, Dave Spencer, Greg Stocking and Carl (Bud) Waters. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Bill Bergman, David Hottman, Don Kramer, Gilbert Mjoen, Dale Oare, Henry (Pete) Petersen and Charles Walburg.

Ruby was born July 11, 1928, in Worthington, MN to Albert and Faye (Blair) Pererson. There she grew up and graduated high school. Ruby married Robert H. Pieper on December 14, 1947, in Worthington, MN. While Bob worked as a salesman for the Hershey Foods Corp., they made their home Sioux Falls, SD, Des Moines, IA, and finally in 1967, Yankton, SD. In 1968, they bought Wholesale Supply Company and began their family business. While Ruby was very active in the business she received great satisfaction serving as Treasurer and then President on the Hospital Auxiliary, volunteering for Meals on Wheels, and being a member of the Women of the Moose and the VFW Auxiliary. Ruby's involvement in church included Sunday school teacher, Deacon, and, because of her love of music, singing in the church choir.

Those who will cherish her memory are her husband, Bob; two sons: Rod (Becky) and Bruce (Teresa) Pieper all of Yankton, SD; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Mark) Gemar of Tripp, SD; Robbie, Roxanne, and Chris Pieper, all of Yankton, SD; and Miranda (Pete) Hatchett of Phoenix, AZ; and one great-grandson, Cade Gemar of Tripp, SD; her brother, Robert (Molly) Peterson of St. Benedict, MN; and very dear personal friends, Tony and Donna Ellis and Dale and Sherry Oare of Yankton, SD.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Memorials are directed to the Riverview Park Reformed Church, 708 East 19th St., Yankton, SD 57078 in memory of Ruby.

Inez Peterson

GAYVILLE -- Inez Peterson, 87, Gayville, died Tuesday (Aug. 3, 2004) at the Wakonda Heritage Manor.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Gayville Lutheran Church. Burial is in the Danish Lutheran Cemetery, rural Gayville.

Visitation is from 3-7 p.m. Friday with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion.

Floyd Stock

Floyd Stock passed away July 9, 2004, at 3:10 a.m. MT at Memorial Hospital, Greeley, Colo., from cancer.

Floyd worked at the Human Services Center on the dairy farm during the late 1960s, then moved to Pierce, Colo., where he worked on a dairy farm. He then moved to Evans, Colo., where he had a lawn service and managed a large trailer court. Floyd enjoyed outside work and did some carpentry work. He married Mary Jane in Scotland, S.D., in 1965. He married his second wife, Mert, in 1991 in Greeley, Colo. She died of a brain aneurysm. He then married Connie in 1999 and was still married at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Connie, of Evans, Colo.; ex-wife Mary Jane Stock, with whom three children were born: daughter Cheryl and sons Steven and Stephen of Pierce, Colo. Also surviving are brothers: Richard and Joan Stock of Yankton, S.D.; Arthur Stock of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Eugene and Kary Stock of Sturgis, S.D.; sisters: Betty and Dick Hrdlicka of Wagner, S.D.; Audrey and Maynard Hirsch of Pukwana, S.D.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Esther (Giedd) Stock; a sister Bernice Norder of Dante, S.D.; Alvin Stock of Wagner, S.D.; Walter Stock Jr., Yankton, S.D.; and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Memorial donations are being taken for St. Jude Children's Hospital for the cancer fund. Contact Richard at 665-8720.

Carl Mumm

BLOOMFIELD, Neb. -- Carl Mumm, 59, of Bloomfield, Neb., died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 2004) at Nebraska Medical Center/University Hospital in Omaha, Neb.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Trinity Lutheran Church, Bloomfield, with the Rev. Duane Farr officiating. Burial is in Bloomfield Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. today (Friday) at Brockhaus Funeral Home, Bloomfield.

Lillian Eng

FLANDREAU -- Lillian M. Eng, 83, of Flandreau died Thursday (Aug. 5, 2004) at the Flandreau Medical Center, Flandreau.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Sunday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Flandreau, with the Rev. Dr. Mary A. Sacco and the Rec. Ernie Stadum officiating. Burial is in Union Cemetery, Flandreau.

Visitation begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the family present from 4-7 p.m., at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau.

Lillian was born Aug. 20, 1920, at Rowena, SD, to Conrad and Hattie (Helgerson) Knutson. Her family moved to Moody County when she was a young girl. She attended country school and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1938. She attended Stewart's School of Hairstyling in Sioux Falls and, in 1942, moved to Parker where she worked in a beauty shop that she later owned. Lillian married Lawrence Eng on July 18, 1946, at Parker and they lived in Flandreau.

She enjoyed auction sales and flea markets. Lillian was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and WELCA.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence, Flandreau; three children: Dale (Marci), Flandreau; Janet (Martin) Lemme, Sioux Falls; and Glen (Carla), Yankton; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Marlan (Deloris) Knutson, Flandreau.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Lawrence; her parents; two brothers: Lloyd and Kelmer; and a sister, Alice.

Jake Muller

LYNCH, Neb. -- Jacob "Jake" Muller, 73, of Lynch, Neb., died Monday (Aug. 2, 2004) at his home in Lynch.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Lynch, with the Rev. Tom Gall officiating. Organist is Barbara Weeder. Burial is in the Lynch Catholic cemetery.

Pallbearers are Bill Muller, Jerry Muller, Brian Kimble, Richard Muller, David Hartzler and Curtis Closson. Honorary pallbearers are A.J. Muller, Jeff Kimble, Kari Garrelts, Sara Hartzler, Brian Kimble, Gina Muller, Ryan Muller, Megan Hartzler, Anya Hartzler, and neighbors and friends.

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. today (Friday), with a 7:30 p.m. wake service, at the church.

Brockhaus Funeral Home, Lynch, is in charge of arrangements.

Jacob John Muller was born September 21, 1930, to James T. and Sarah (Meyens) Muller at Verdigre, Nebraska. He attended rural school near Verdigre. On December 15, 1949, he was married to Agnes Lechler at Lynch. Seven children were born to them. They farmed near Lynch.

Jake was a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lynch, the Knights of Columbus, and was a board member of the Farmers Union Coop in Lynch.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes; children: William of Omaha, Joyce Kimble of Brunswick, Gerald of Lynch, Richard and his wife Holly of Yankton, SD; Marilyn and her husband David Hartzler of Brewster, MN; brothers: James (Mary) Muller of Tucson, AZ; Clayton (Sue) Muller of Marblehill, MO; Howard (Jay) Muller of Clarkson, Neb.; sisters: Mary Jo Closson of O'Neill, Neb.; Marjorie (Ken) Sexton of Edmund, KY.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas and Francis Muller; daughter, Roberta; son, Steven; son-in-law, Ron Kimble; brother-in-law, Russell Closson.

Inez H. Peterson

GAYVILLE -- Inez H. Peterson, 87, of Gayville died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, after a brief illness. She was a life-long resident of the Gayville area.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Gayville Lutheran Church in Gayville with a burial at Danish Lutheran Cemetery, rural Gayville.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

She was born to Soren and Hannah (Junker) Sorensen in Clay County on June 17, 1917. She married Chester F. Peterson on July 12, 1941. They raised four children: Richard (Juanita) of Wewela, SD; Robert (Sharyl) of Grand Junction, CO; Patricia Peterson of Gayville, SD; and Thomas (Julie) of Fargo, ND.

Chet and Inez farmed south of Gayville until 1988 when they moved to Gayville where she lived until her death. She will be remembered by many in the community as an elementary teacher, Sunday school teacher and piano teacher, as well as an active member of the Danish Trinity Lutheran Church and church organist for many years.

She will be remembered by her family for her care and the loving support she gave to all of their activities, as well as for her dumpling soup.

She enjoyed traveling. Some of her favorite trips were to Alaska, and especially Norway and Denmark to visit relatives.

In addition to travel, playing solitaire, working crosswords and watching game shows on TV were her favorite activities.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years; four children; and two grandchildren, Randy of Manhattan, KS, and Cindy of Fargo, ND.
