Visitation will be 1-7 pm, Tuesday with family present from 5-7 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

La Vina Martha Ackerman was born January 21, 1932, to Emil P. and Ernestine (Kautz) Ackerman. Born and raised on a farm in McIntosh County, ND, as a teenager she contracted Polio. Although high school was delayed, she graduated in 1954 from Ashley. She worked as a Practical Nurse, continuing into college. La Vina attended St. Paul Bible College, St. Paul, in 1954-1955, and North Central Bible College, Minneapolis, fall of 1955.

In 1949, La Vina met Luke Marcus Miller, son of the new pastor. Luke worked on her parents’ farm. They married on December 26, 1955, in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Artas. Loving her role as pastor’s wife, together they served churches in Indiana, ND and SD. They lived 12 years in Redfield, and 33 years in Aberdeen.

Growing up on the farm gave her a love of working the land, especially driving tractor. Her summers were filled with gardening, canning and freezing.

La Vina’s passion was working with children in churches, camps and Cherub Choirs. She was Children’s Director at Midwest Bible Camp in Watertown for many years. She was a teacher’s aide with younger children for 11 years at Redfield State School, and 15 years in Special Education at Lincoln Elementary.

Her love of music was carried into the lives of her 2 daughters, singing together in churches, camps, family gatherings and car trips. The love of music was evident to all who knew her, as she would break into song many times, and gladly sang in quartets, trios, duets or solos.

Her German heritage was proudly displayed in speaking and singing German, and cooking great German meals. Entertaining guests to one of her meals was a memorable experience, as no one would leave hungry.

La Vina’s faith in God and spreading God’s word to the world was her fervent desire, having asked Jesus into her life as a young teenager. She supported many ministries and missions organizations, with Wycliff Bible Translators being her favorite due to their zeal for translating God’s Word into the languages of the world. For many years she was a chairperson in organizing local banquets to raise support for Wycliff.

Lovingly called “Oma” by family, she thrived on being with grandchildren, cooking, picnics in the back yard, teasing, giving little gifts, and always having laughter hanging in the air. She found ways to make any occasion special.

Knowing we will see her again in heaven because of her commitment to Jesus Christ, La Vina is survived by her husband, Rev. Luke Miller, 2 daughters, Melledy Miller-Rostad, Joye (Al) Ward, all of Aberdeen; 5 grandchildren, Elias (Stephanie) Rostad of Wessington Springs; Rich (Amber Brezden, fiance’), Aleya, Alexis and Bowdrie Ward, all of Aberdeen; and 1 sister, Caroline Ulmer, Wishek, ND.

Now with her in heaven, she is preceded in death by her parents, and her brother-in-law, Oscar Ulmer.
