THERESA HEUPEL

Funeral services for Theresa Heupel, 88, Aberdeen, will be 10 am, Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at New Life Fellowship with Pastor Joe Moslander officiating. Burial at 2 pm, at the Eureka City Cemetery, Eureka, SD. Theresa died Friday, May 28, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Tuesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Theresa Bertsch was born on July 11, 1921 in McPherson County, SD to Jacob and Kathrina (Ladner) Bertsch. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. On October 10, 1940 she married Edwin Heupel near Venturia, ND. In 1941 they purchased the farm five miles NE of Eureka where they farmed for thirty-seven years. In 1978 they retired and in 1981 they moved to Eureka. Edwin died on March 16, 1987 at Eureka. In 1990 she moved to Aberdeen. She became a resident at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen in February 2010.

Theresa’s faith in the Lord was the center of her life being baptized in July of 1934. She was an active member of First Bapitst Church, Eureka. She moved to Aberdeen where she was a member of New Life Fellowship. Her many talents were being a seamstress, her pretty flower gardens, quilting, custom wedding and anniversary cakes, volunteering at Avera St. Lukes Hospital and R.S.V.P. Singers. Last but not least playing skippo with her family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Theresa’s life are her daughters, Shirley (Gary) Wolff, Long Lake, Sylvia (Don) Heinrich, Aberdeen, Donna (Lester) Heinrich, Watertown, Patty (Rick) Trupe, Castlewood, grandchildren, Becki (Wayne) Wormstadt, Bill (Jandie) Heinrich, Dena (Dan) DeBaere, Wanda (Jim) Zweig, Gwenda (Luther) Sieg, Dan (Sue) Follmer, Aliecia (Eric) Stricherz, Jason (Robyn) Trupe, Chris (Jena) Trupe, great grandchildren, Zachary, Jadyn, Teigen, Mikahi, Kimberly, Jared, Derrick, Danielle, Courtney, Christin, Joshua, Gloria, Karl, Kaylee, Devin, Tate, Conner, Clayton, Aubree and Sophie and sister Adeline Heupel.

Theresa is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin, parents, Jacob and Kathrina Bertsch, granddaughter, Dawn Quenzer, son-in-law, Derold Follmer, brothers, August, Berthold, Albert and Jacob, sisters Ernestine Haas, Martha Bertsch and Ida Goehring.

MAVONE BEVERLY BRANDLEE

Graveside service for Mavone Beverly Brandlee, 86, of Groton, SD and formerly of Aberdeen will be 3:00pm Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Riverside Memorial Park. Pastor Deb Grismer will officiate. Mavone died Thursday, May 27, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Groton.

Visitation will be from 1-6pm, Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Mavone Beverly Brandlee, daughter of Oscar and Anna (Gulsvig) Brandlee, was born on May 24, 1924 at Aberdeen, SD. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Aberdeen. This is the area where she was raised and attended school, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School with the class of 1942. While in high school, Mavone was active in the concert and marching bands. She was well known for her piano playing skills and was also a very talented singer. Following high school, Mavone went immediately into the working world. For many years she did secretarial work for Paul Green, Hub City Iron, Socony and Mobile Oil Companies and later the South Dakota School for the Visually Handicapped.

Mavone was an active member in the American Legion Auxiliary and was honored for her many years of continuous membership. Throughout her life she cared for several elderly Aberdeen residents in their homes, and also cared for her parents in their home well into their elderly years. Mavone made Aberdeen her home until 1994 when she entered the Golden Living Center in Groton, where she remained until the time of her death.

Mavone is survived by many cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Honorary casket bearers will be the entire staff at the Golden Living Center in Groton.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

LEO E. HOFFMAN

The service for Leo E. Hoffman, 79, Aberdeen, will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Military Honors by Sydney L. Smith American Legion Post #24. Leo died Thursday, May 27, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-8pm, Monday, with family present from 6-8pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Leo was born on December 17, 1930 to Christian C. & Eva (Schock) Hoffman on a farm east of Long Lake, SD. He attended rural school in the area and then worked on the family farm with his parents. In February of 1952, he was drafted to the U.S. Marine Corps. During his tour of duty, he spent six months in Japan. He was discharged following two years of service. Following his discharge, he started farming with his older brother Ernest on the family farm.

In 1975, he married Wilma (Schmitt) Traxinger. They made their home in Aberdeen where he worked for South Dakota Wheat Growers until he retired in 1993.

He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, was a life member of the VFW, Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24 of Aberdeen, and the Aberdeen Area Senior Center. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bus tours and playing cards.

Grateful for having shared Leo’s life are his wife, Wilma, two daughters, Sandy (David) Jorgenson, Sioux Falls, Candie (Rob) Traxinger, Newbury, Vermont, four grandchildren, Andrew Jorgenson, Nick Jorgenson, Rachael Dube and Travis Dube, one brother, Harold (Hilda) Hoffman, Aberdeen, a sister, Marcella (Earl) Weisz, Park River, ND, sister-in-law, LaVina Hoffman, Agar, SD and four nieces and six nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Elvin, Ervin, & Ernest.

IONE EHLEY

Funeral service for Ione Ehley, 76, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at North Highland United Methodist Church. Pastor Mark Ehrmantraut will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Ione died Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 2-5pm, Monday, May 31, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Ione Vander Laan, daughter of John and Angeline (Van Vugt) Vander Laan, was born on February 4, 1934 on her grandparents' farm near Westfield, ND. She was raised in the Westfield area and attended county school through the eighth grade. Ione attended Pollock High School in Pollock, SD graduating with the class of 1951.

Ione attended Ellendale State College in Ellendale, ND where she earned her Standard Normal (Teachers Certificate). Following her graduation she taught country school.

Ione was united in marriage to Marvin Ehley on August 16, 1957 at Westfield. Together the couple made their home in Milnor and Elgin, ND for several years where they taught school. They began making their home in Aberdeen where Ione raised their family. Later in life, Ione began teaching and tutoring elementary students in Aberdeen, retiring from CC Lee Elementary School in 1996.

Ione enjoyed singing in the choir and loved square dancing. She also enjoyed traveling. In her free time, Ione enjoyed gardening and also loved flowers. Ione enjoyed sewing and doing arts and crafts. Her greatest joy was spending time with her granddaughter Sarah. Ione was a member of North Highland United Methodist Church in Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Ione’s life are her husband Marvin of Aberdeen, one daughter, Jean (Paul) Dutt of Aberdeen, one son, Mark Ehley of Bismarck, ND, one brother, Keith Vander Laan, one granddaughter, Sarah Dutt and three step granddaughters, Jessica Dutt, Catherine (Eli) Reitzel and Laura Dutt.

Ione was preceded in death by her parents John and Angeline Vander Laan.

The family prefers memorials be made in Ione’s honor to Storybook Land at Aberdeen or the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718 or www.cancer.org.

EDWARD “ED” MEHLHAFF

The service for Edward “Ed” Mehlhaff, 75, Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens at a later date. Ed died Wednesday, May 26, at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

Visitation will be from 2-5pm, Saturday, May 29, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Edward Mehlhaff, son of Heinrich and Maria (Hieb) Mehlhaff, was born on August 4, 1934 at Hosmer, SD. This is the area where he was raised and attended school, graduating from Hosmer High School with the class of 1952. Following high school, Ed attended the School of Commerce in Aberdeen. He worked various jobs in the Aberdeen area. Ed served in the United States Army and Army National Guard from which he was honorably discharged in August of 1960. For a short time Ed was employed at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD.

Ed was united in marriage to Verna Schmidtgall on October 18, 1963 in Bowdle, SD. In 1965, he became employed at Hub City Iron, later called Safeguard. Ed retired thirty-two years later. During his career at Safeguard, he was also a Real Estate Agent for various brokerages in Aberdeen, until the time of his death.

Ed was a member of Lions, Shriners, a lifetime Legion Member and on the Aberdeen Board of Realtors. He loved dancing, music, visiting and dining out.

Grateful for having shared Ed’s life are his son, Wayne Mehlhaff, Aberdeen, daughter, Veronica (Sean) Wahl, granddaughter, Hunter Wahl, grandsons, Jackson and Lincoln Wahl, and brother, Arnold (JoAnne) Mehlhoff, sisters, Florence Schock and Esther (Alvin) Ottenbacher, and special friend, Nettie Frederick .

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Walter, Harold, and Ervin.

A. VIOLA BURROUGHS

The funeral service for A. Viola Burroughs, 92, of Bloomington MN., and formerly of Aberdeen, SD., will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday October 23, 2010, with visitation one hour prior at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave. NE, Aberdeen. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Viola passed away peacefully on October 19, 2010 at Martin Luther Care Center in Bloomington MN.

Born and raised in Brampton, ND, Viola attended college at Ellendale, ND, where she received her Associate Teaching Degree in elementary education. She married Marvin Burroughs on August 11, 1940. They lived in Enderlin, ND, and Pierre, SD, where she was an elementary teacher. In 1957, they moved to Aberdeen.

Viola was a substitute teacher in the Aberdeen school system, and active at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and with the faculty wives at Northern State University. Preceded in death by husband, Marvin; brother, Alvin Danielson. Survived by children, Jeanne (Gordon) Hanson, Richfield, MN; Richard (Cheryl) Burroughs, Rock Springs, WY; and John Burroughs, Burnsville, MN; 4 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Evelyn Burroughs; cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorials preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or Northern State University Foundation (Marvin Burroughs scholarship).

JOANN (SCHAIBLE) BRINKMAN

The funeral service for JoAnn Brinkman, 68, Statesboro GA., and formerly of rural Long Lake/Leola SD, will be 11:00am, Saturday, October 23, 2010, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, with Pastor Erik Swanson officiating. Burial will be at Green Mound Cemetery, Leola SD. JoAnn died Monday, October 18, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro GA.

Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

JoAnn Schaible was born to Reinhold and Martha (Schaeffer) Schaible at home near Long Lake SD on October 12, 1942. This is the area that she grew up and attended school. In 1960 JoAnn married Henry Delfred Brinkman at Ashley ND. To this union was added three children.

JoAnn co-owned and operated businesses with husband Henry, including an arcade where she enjoyed and excelled at games like Pac-man and Centipede. She enjoyed gardening, canning, was an excellent baker and dedicated to her family.

JoAnn spent much of her life affected by multiple sclerosis, but through her strength and great determination she bore and raised three children as well as maintain her duties to the family business. After retirement JoAnn and Henry enjoyed spending winters in Arizona. JoAnn was also a proud and very loving grandmother.

When JoAnn moved into nursing care, she continued to positively affect the lives of all of those around her. She was known for her care and encouragement to the other nursing home residents, as well as the nursing staff and aides. She enjoyed playing card games, especially Uno and was also fond of Bingo.

Grateful for having shared JoAnn’s life are sons; Roy and Nathan Brinkman, daughter; Vicky Brinkman Cavender, sisters; Donna Hertel, Joyce (Orie) Balliet and Karen (John) Reis, and grandchildren Joshua, Kyle, Eric and McKenzie.

She was preceded in death by her parents Reinhold and Martha Schaible, and brother Roy Schaible.

DONNA LEREW

The service for Donna Lerew, 81, Mellette, will be 10:00am, Friday, October 22, 2010 at Northwestern United Methodist Church, Mellette, with Pastor Jon Damaska officiating. Burial will be at Mellette Cemetery. Donna died Tuesday, October 19, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Thursday, with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Donna Schilder was born September 4, 1929 to George & Bernice (Myers) Schilder at Faulkton, SD. This is the area where she grew up and attended school.

On October 17, 1963 Donna married Melvin Lerew in Aberdeen.

Donna loved quilting, sewing and knitting. She enjoyed her grandkids’ sporting events puppies, and shopping. Donna was a big NASCAR fan, and especially enjoyed watching Dale Earnhardt Sr. She was known for her potato salad, potato soup and pickle wraps.

Grateful for having shared Donna’s life are husband Melvin Lerew, her children, Wanda (Lyle) Schumack, Waneta (Wes) Malsom, Kevin Parrett, Kelly Parrett, Dwayne (Bobbie) Lerew, brother William (Joyce) Schilder, sister-in-law, Patty Schilder, grandchildren, Chris (Kevin) Burckhard, Tascha (Riley) Lamb, Teresa Swanhorst, Richie (Ariel) Schumack, Brandi Nash, Angela (Jason) Post, Kyle Malsom, Joey Parrett, MiKayla Parrett, Taylor Parrett, Courtney Lerew, Erica Lerew, Ray Lerew, Hunter Lerew, great grandchildren Paiton, Reece and Lauryn Burckhard, Melania and Kinsley Lamb and Ella and Jackson Post, and “puppies” Jazz and Zoey “Skeeter”, Kaci & Frankie.

She is preceded in death by parents, brother, Robert Schilder, sister, Dortothy Wuger, and “puppies” Sandy, Puddles, Snowball & Savannah.

STELLA CECILIE ACKERSON

Services for Stella Cecilie Ackerson, 98, Ellendale will be 2 pm, Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale with Pastor H. Tyson Labuhn officiating. Burial will follow at the Ellendale Cemetery. Stella died on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the Prince of Peace Care Center, Ellendale.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Monday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Stella Cecilie Krause was born on March 17, 1912 at Creston, NE to Paul and Lena (Johnson) Krause. At the age of six they moved to Hecla, SD where she attended school. She worked at a café in Hecla and in 1935 she moved to Aberdeen where she worked for Combs Café. On July 7, 1939 she married John Edward Ackerson at Aberdeen and in 1942 they moved to Ellendale, ND. They owned and operated the bowling alley and café in Redfield from 1953 to 1955. They also lived during the summers at Lake Lida near Pelican Rapids, MN for thirty-seven years. Stella worked for the Ellendale Nursing Home during the winter months for twenty-one years. John Ackerson died on June 13, 1993 in Ellendale.

Stella was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale and the ladies aid since 1942.

Grateful for having shared Stella’s life are her children, Robert E. “Ed” (Pat) Ackerson, Aberdeen, Richard J. (Diane) Ackerson, Aberdeen, Ronald L. (Helen) Ackerson, Spearfish, SD, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, eight great great grandchildren, two sisters, Florence Karlen and Wilma (Lyle) Tischer both of Oakes, ND.

Stella is preceded in death by her parents, husband, John, son, Dennis, daughters, Dorothy Myhre and Betty Raymond, daughter-in-law, Sally Ackerson, one great granddaughter, Mattie Dods and one great grandson, Andrew Ackerson, sister, Mabel Felix and brother, Clarence Krause.
