DONALD S. RESHETAR

The funeral service for Donald S. Reshetar, 81, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Tuesday, October 19, 2010, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park, with Military Honors by Sidney L. Smith Post #24. Donald died Thursday, October 14, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Monday, with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Don was born to Stephen & Marie (Brezny) Reshetar, October 29, 1928 in Minneapolis, MN. He attended school in Minneapolis graduating from Minneapolis South High School in 1946. In high school he was named to the Minneapolis All City high school football team. He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD earning a Bachelors degree in 1951. Playing football at Augustana he received All Conference recognition. In 1958 he earned a Masters degree in Education from Northern State College.

Don married Rosemary Wilcox in Sioux Falls on June 25, 1950. His teaching & coaching career began in Egan, SD in 1951. From 1952-1954 he served in the US Navy as a lieutenant on the Battleship USS Cavalier. After his service ended he resumed teaching & coaching in Webster, SD until 1958. His Webster Bearcat football team went undefeated in 1957, earning the top rank of SD Class A Football. After coaching for one year in Mitchell Don & Rosemary moved their young family to Aberdeen in 1960. There he continued working as a teacher, coach & administrator for over 30 years. Don was head football coach from 1960-1972, winning ESD Conference Titles in 1964 & 1967. He was Athletic Director for 22 years, receiving 1982 SD High School Athletic Director of the Year & also directed the Aberdeen Relays for 22 years. The field house at Clark Swisher Athletic Complex was named in his honor along with coach Jim Kretchman in 2006. Don served as director of the SD High School All Star games alongside his mentor Clark Swisher for over 10 years. In 2008 he was inducted into the Aberdeen Central Athletic Hall of Fame.

Don was a devoted husband & father & a friend to all who knew him. Don & Rosemary celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary June 25th, 2010 with their entire family. He enjoyed all family gatherings, time spent with his grandchildren & great grandchildren especially entertaining them by playing his harmonica. He & Rosemary enjoyed gatherings with his coaching colleagues & their wives after home sporting events at Central, the Golden Eagles biggest fan was Don. Don enjoyed visits from former students & athletes. Don & Rosemary enjoyed attending state high school sporting events. Don was an avid Minnesota Twins & Vikings fan.

Don & Rosemary were devoted members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church for over 50 years. Don’s deep faith & love of the Lord was his foundation in his daily life.

He will be remembered for his wisdom, encouragement & love for all. Don will be missed by all who knew & loved him. We love you Dad.

DONALD “DON” BONEN

The funeral service for Don H. Bonen, 75, of Aberdeen will be Sunday, October. 17, 2010, 2:00 PM, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home in Aberdeen. Rev. Zack Opheim officiating. Burial with military rites by Sidney L. Smith Legion Post #24 at Sunset Memorial Gardens on Monday October 18, 2010.

Visitation will be Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 4-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen . Don passed away October 14, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Don Bonen was born February 3, 1935 at Bowdle, SD to Henry & Hilda (Edinger) Bonen. Don grew up and graduated from high school at Hot Springs SD.

On July 16, 1971 Don married Anita Weifenbach at Webster, SD.

Don was a member of Machinist Union District Lodge 5. He was a big automobile enthusiast and was most proud of his ’66 Tornado. He loved collecting model cars and other automobile memorabilia. Don enjoyed traveling, especially annual trips to the Sturgis South Dakota Bike Rally.

Grateful for having shared Don’s life are his wife, Anita, children, Cody Bonen, Aberdeen, Cade Bonen, Aberdeen, Lin “Butch” (Chris) Bonen, Huntsville, AL, Eva (John) Holman, Kingman, AZ, Lorrie (Mike) Weber, Groton, SD, Larry (Bobbi) Weifenbach, Aberdeen, thirteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren, brother, Charles “Jim” (Irene Gross) Bonen, and two nieces Debbie and Penny.

He is preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, and nephew, Jimmy Bonen.

DELORES ARLENE PECK

The funeral service for Delores A. Peck, 91, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Friday, October 15th, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens of Aberdeen. Delores died Friday, October 8, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, with family present from 5-7pm, Thursday, October 14th at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Delores Wilke was born August 2, 1919 in Aberdeen, SD to George and Esther Wilke. She was raised on their farm home which was located five miles north of Columbia near the southwest corner of Sand Lake. Delores graduated from Columbia High School in 1937 and married Walter Yeske on August 28, 1937 in Aberdeen. They farmed in the Randolph/Stratford area. They relocated to California by train for World War II service and then returned to Aberdeen in 1945. Delores was employed at the Olwin Angell’s Department Store for over 25 years in the lingerie and cosmetic departments. She also did the bookkeeping for the family concrete construction business and farm operations. Walter Yeske died in 1965.

On January 11, 1969, Delores married Elmer “Duffy” Peck in Aberdeen. Delores enjoyed traveling throughout much of the United States, Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska. She was an avid fisherwomen and enjoyed many trips to the Missouri River. She loved to camp and stay overnight near Akaska, SD. Bridge, whist and miscellaneous card games with friends and family was a way of life for her. She excelled with her handiwork…. knitting and crocheting afghans, dishcloths, doilies, covered hangers and other items for her entire family. Cooking, baking and meal preparation was her expertise….she was one of a kind. Duffy Peck died in 1990.

Delores is survived by sons Gary (JoAnn) Yeske of Aberdeen, and Lanny (Fran) Yeske of Forest, Virginia; grandchildren J. (Judy) Arnold Yeske of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Shannon (Roberta) Yeske of Aberdeen, Troy (Myrza) Yeske of Sacramento, California, and Terra (Mark Schuh) Yeske of Austin, Texas; great-grandchildren Emma, Ava, Everett and Alessandra Yeske and Beckett Schuh; sister-in-law LaVila Wilke, nephew Randall Wilke and nieces Cindy Traphagen and Jody Knecht; step-daughter Karen (Willie) Schuck of Gulf Shores, Alabama; step grandchildren Leah Haukom, Christopher and Kari Peck, Colleen Jacques, Jeffrey Fluke, Torrie Taj, Heather Rothman; step great grandchildren Conner, Jackson, Kennedie and Marshall Haukom, Ryan Jacques, Danielle and Jason Fluke, Joel Jordan, Grady Lee, Ashley Rothman, Alexander, Savanna and Sara Taj.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, her brother George Wilke Jr. and her step-son Kenneth Peck. Delores was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, SD.

EVAN CODY FORTIN

The funeral for Evan Cody Fortin, son of Michael and Michelle (Reed) Fortin, will be 2:00pm Thursday, October 14, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Reception following burial at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Evan died October 6, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Surviving Evan are his parents, sister Mallory Fortin; grandparents, Tim and Cheryl Reed, Sue and Frank Krumm, Donna Fortin, Mike Fortin and many other family members and friends.

MARY ANN ECKES

The funeral service for Mary Ann Eckes, 95, will be 1:30pm, Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Father Joe Holzhauser, Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Mary Ann died at her home in Aberdeen on October 6, 2010.

Visitation will be from 11:00am until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Mary Ann Eckes was born June 5, 1915 near Hosmer, SD. She was the oldest of 7 children of Alexander Mardian and Elizabeth (Schwan) Mardian. The family moved to Aberdeen when she was 4 and she grew up near St. Mary’s Church. Her first marriage was to Joe Kramer of Ipswich, SD with whom she had 5 daughters and 1 son. Her second marriage was to Lawrence Eckes of Marshfield, WI with whom she had 1 daughter and 1 son. During her full life she had many jobs including working at the Black Hawk Café, Combs Café, The Virginian Café, Jack and Jill Clothing store, K.O. Lee and also at St. Luke’s annex during World War II with children suffering from Polio. Mary Ann loved visiting with her family and friends over coffee and a game of marbles at her kitchen table. In her later years she especially loved visits with her little great and great great grandchildren to watch them play.

Mary Ann was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Aberdeen. She was a past member of the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She also liked gardening, canning and working in her yard.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands and two children who died in childhood, Bernice Kramer and Agnes Katherine Kramer.

She is survived by her remaining children, Rita Marie (Kramer) Hoeft, Rosemary (Kramer) Rux, Gladys (Kramer) Youngstrom, Ronald James Kramer, Linda (Eckes) Tampary and Lawrence Eckes. She is also survived by 29 grandchildren, 64 great grandchildren, 25 great great grandchildren and 2 great great great grandchildren…

… and she wanted to say “I did it my way”.

FREDRICK W. WENDT

Memorial service for Fredrick W. Wendt, 90, of Aberdeen will be 10:30am, Friday, October 8, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Aberdeen. Pastor Jeff Whillock will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park. Fred passed away Sunday, October 3, 2010 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

Fredrick Wendt was born October 3, 1920 on the family farm near Aberdeen, SD. This is the area where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School in 1938.

On October 10, 1948, Fredrick married Betty Lou Davis in Aberdeen. To this union was added one son, Richard. They made their home on the farm in the house where Fredrick was born. Fred continued to make this his home for eighty years. He actively farmed and raised cattle throughout his life until his late 70’s, when he retired. Fred was a Past Master of Sunrise Lodge #211, a Past Exalted Ruler of The Elks Lodge #1046, a member The Yelduz Shrine “Wrecking Crew” and a member of The Scottish Rite.

Fred was considered by many to be a “natural mechanic”. He enjoyed designing, building and repairing all forms of equipment. Fred was very creative with his tools and hands and was an instinctive engineer. He enjoyed stock car racing, especially working on son Richard’s racing teams through the years. Fred and his family also promoted racing at the Brown County Speedway for five years. Fred was known for his toughness and resiliency. Fred enjoyed sharing his skills and life with other people, whether it was family, friends, neighbors or the many individuals that were part of the racing teams.

Grateful for having shared Fredrick’s life are his son, Richard (Rhonda) Wendt, Ridgecrest, CA, granddaughter, Emily Wendt, grandson, Brian (Nicole) Bryant, Sacramento, CA, nieces, Betty Knepke, Sandra Hobart, nephew, Howard (Paige) Anderson, sisters, Martha Anderson, Aberdeen, Margaret Wickstrom, Aberdeen.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty and his parents.

PETER E. MATTSON

The funeral service for Peter “Pete” Evan Mattson, 63, Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Thursday, October 7, 2010 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Military honors will be provided by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24. Pete died Saturday, October 2, at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD after a courageous battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, with family present from 5-7pm, Wednesday, October 6 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Peter Evan Mattson was born on October 8, 1946 to Peter and Ethel (Tonander) Mattson in Milaca, MN. This is the area he grew up and attended school. He then attended the University of Minnesota. Pete married Muriel Smith on September 7, 1968 in Sisseton, SD. He graduated with a Forestry degree in 1969. Shortly after receiving his degree, Pete was drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was discharged in 1972 and began a career as a salesman with Williams Steel and Hardware out of Minneapolis. Pete and Muriel moved to Aberdeen when there was an opening for his job. Later, Pete worked as a reservationist for Wyndham Hotels and Resorts.

Pete was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where he served as an usher. He was also a member of Dacotah Territory Muzzleloaders and was a past member of Whitetail Bowmen Archery. Pete was a true outdoorsman. He loved to deer hunt with bow or muzzleloader. Their family would often take camping trips. They enjoyed primitive camping at Ft. Sisseton. Pete liked to play cards with family and friends, especially cribbage and gin. He was a loyal fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Twins. Pete liked history and was an avid Trivial Pursuit player. He liked his sweets and truly enjoyed Muriel’s cooking and baking. Pete’s cat Midnight was very special to him. He was a man of his word, and would say what he meant, and meant what he said. Pete was able to celebrate 11 years of sobriety, and he and Muriel enjoyed forty-two wonderful years in marriage.

Grateful for having shared Pete’s life are his wife, Muriel, Aberdeen, daughter, Erica (Brent) Stewart, Sioux Falls, SD, son, Jesse (Jill) Mattson, Amherst, NY, five grandchildren, Noah, Lily and Leif Mattson and Jack and Isaac Stewart, half-brother, Melvin Mattson, cousins: Ruth Lee, Sue Halena, Matt Mattson, Mark Mattson, and John Mattson, and several other special cousins, nieces and nephews.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Ethel, and his half-brother, Paul Mattson.

The family prefers memorials be made to American Cancer Society or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

ARTHUR B. URBACH

Graveside service for Arthur B. Urbach, 94, of Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Saturday, October 9, 2010 in the Dick Cemetery near Englevale, ND. Pastor Norm Anderson will officiate. Arthur died Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Arthur Benjamin Urbach, son of Phillip and Anna (Dick) Urbach was born on March 18, 1916 in rural Ransom County near Lisbon, ND. This is the area where he was raised and also attended school at Gilbert #1 Country School.

Arthur went on to join the Civilian Conservation Corp. He also farmed in the Lisbon and Gwinner, ND areas. Throughout his life, Arthur made his home in several different states including California, Arizona, Ohio, New York and Minnesota. He began making his home in Aberdeen in the fall of 2000, where he resided until the time of his death.

Grateful for having shared Arthur’s life are three sons, Milton Bartell, Allen Bartell and Tim Bartell and many nieces and nephews.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and three brothers.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

YVONNIA KIEFER

The memorial mass for Yvonnia Kiefer, 75, Aberdeen, will be 10:00 am, Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at St. Mary’s Cathoic Church, with Father Jeff Norfolk & Father David Jones, officiant. Inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Yvonnia died Thursday, November 18, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

You can pay your respects from 1-7 pm, Monday, with a wake service at 7 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Yvonnia Nelson was born January 30, 1935 at Aberdeen, SD to Harold & Gertrude (Voss) Nelson. She graduated from Northville High School with the Class of 1952. Yvonnia attended Aberdeen School of Commerce. She also took accounting classes at Northern State University.

Yvonnia married Paul Kiefer on April 7, 1956 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Aberdeen. She was employed with Max Stokes, Lawyer for one year. She then became employed with Internal Revenue Service for thirty-two and a half years. Paul died in 1960 at Minneapolis, MN.

She volunteered at the Information Desk at Dakota Midland Hospital, then at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital for many years. She also volunteered at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Food Pantry.

Yvonnia was a member of NARF, VFW Auxiliary, Moose, Sons of Norway, Gold Star Wives, Avera St. Luke’s Auxiliary and a life member of American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, word searches and watching TV. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and loved attending their activities.

Grateful for having shared Yvonnia’s life are her daughter, Jean (Jeff) Black, Aberdeen, grandchildren, Joseph (Amanda) Black, Brian (Jessica) Black, Eric Black (Nicole Northrop), Sarah Black, great grandchildren, Olivia Black, Brylie Black, Peyton Black, sister, Harlene Lacher, Seattle, WA and brother, Robert (Nancy) Nelson, Northville, SD.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul, daughter, Barbara Kiefer and her parents.

WILMA SHUNKWILER

The funeral service for Wilma Shunkwiler, 84, Aberdeen will be 2:30pm, Saturday, November 20, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Wilma died Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Friday, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen..

Wilma May Reinart was born December 25, 1925 at Glendive, MT to Walter & Hazel (Kent) Reinart. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Presentation College Nursing school.

In the summer of 1947, Wilma married Max Shunkwiler at Glendive, MT. Wilma worked at St. Luke’s Hospital for twenty-nine years as a Registered Nurse.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was involved with the Church Circle. Wilma loved gardening and was an excellent cook. She enjoyed baking pies for the bar in Stratford. In the summer, Wilma enjoyed going to the car races. Wilma loved hosting, entertaining family and traveling to Montana to visit her family. She was always cheerful and laughing, even through her illness.

Grateful for having shared Wilma’s life are her sons, Earl (Judy) Shunkwiler, Edward Shunkwiler, granddaughters, Sandi Shunkwiler, Carla (Mark) Kiltelson, great granddaughters, Amanda, Emily, and Carrie.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Max Shunkwiler, parents, brother, sister and one granddaughter.
