This Volga German heritage and upbringing played an important role in his ideology and work ethic throughout his life. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical St. Johns Church in Lincoln. He graduated with a bachelor degree in civil engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he met his future wife, Ziola Reetz. Following graduation, he was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps as a second lieutenant. Ed and Zi were married December 5, 1943, at her family farm outside of Bloomfield.
