DR. KERWIN PAUL WINKLER

The funeral service for Dr. Kerwin Winkler, 72, of Aberdeen, will be 11:00am Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Kerwin died Friday, November 5, 2010 at Avera St. Luke's of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Monday, November 8, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Kerwin Paul Winkler was born to Wesley and Vera Winkler September 28, 1938 in Luverne MN. This is where he grew up and attended school. Kerwin did his undergraduate study at South Dakota State University and earned his doctorate at Palmer Chiropractic College, Davenport, IA.

On January 7, 1961 Kerwin was united in marriage to Gola McKee They moved to Aberdeen SD, where their two children were born. Kerwin ran a successful chiropractic practice for 49 years with his son, Dr Barry Winkler joining him in 1991.

As a Doctor of Chiropractic, Kerwin held many distinguished positions, including; President of the SD Chiropractic Association, SD Delegate to the American Chiropractic Association, Board of Governors of ACA, Chairman of the Board of ACA, ACA Legislative Committee, VP of the Chiropractic Centennial Committee, ACA Delegate to the World Federation of Chiropractic, Board of Directors of Palmer College Alumni Association, Board of Trustees at Texas Chiropractic College and Executive Editor of the ACA Journal. Kerwin was also the recipient of many awards for his service, including; ACA Chiropractor of the Year, The Lee Homewood Lifetime Achievement Award, Palmer College Alumni of the Year and is the only Doctor of Chiropractic to receive the SD Chiropractor of the Year award twice.

He was active in various community organizations and proudly served as Past Master of Sunrise Lodge 211 A.F. & A.M.

Kerwin was a man of faith and served the First United Methodist Church as Administrative Chair, Lay Leader and on the Pastor Parish and Finance Committees. He was a loving and dedicated family man, and was well known for his care and integrity with his patients.

Blessed for having shared Kerwin’s life are his beloved wife Gola; daughter Paula (Michael) Accurso, Eagan MN; son Dr. Barry Winkler, Aberdeen; grandchildren Benjamin, Sean, Lucas, Marie, Devin, Riley and Joshua; brother Dr. Carroll (Verna) Winkler; Bismarck ND; Sisters-in-law Paige Winkler; Rapid City SD, Peg McKee; Kansas City MO. and Mavis Wahlert; Mitchell SD, and many nieces and nephews.

Kerwin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Owen and wife Darlene Winkler, Dr. Max Winkler, Dr. Alvin Wahlert and parents-in-law Grover and Annabelle McKee.

In lieu of flowers, Kerwin’s wishes were that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Aberdeen’s Building Fund.

ARDIS PIETZ

Services for Ardis Pietz, 70, Aberdeen, will be at 1:00pm, Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Plymouth Congregational UCC, Pastor Jill Warner officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Ardis died Thursday, November 4, at Watertown SD.

Visitation: 5-7pm, Monday, November 8, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Ardis C. Schlenker was born March 13, 1940 to Arthur and Paulina (Kirschenmann) Schlenker at Pierre, SD. Her family moved to Houghton, SD where they lived for 10 years and she attended country school. They then moved west of Aberdeen for a short time before moving to Groton, SD. Ardis worked at Omar’s Café while in school and graduated from Groton High School in 1960. She then worked at the Capital Café and Lounge in Aberdeen. Ardis married Melvin Pietz on October 22, 1966 in Minneapolis, MN where they resided for several years. In 1969, Ardis and Melvin moved to Aberdeen where she took a job at Dutch’s Café. She worked at various places including: Al’s Bakery, Mr. Donuts, White Cross Cleaners, Professional Arts Pharmacy, Control Data and Econo Foods Bakery. Ardis then entered the St. Luke’s Foster Grandparents program where she served for two years. She touched the lives of many young children and was also touched by them. Ardis also volunteered at the Learning Tree and was active with them.

Ardis was a member of Plymouth Congregational UCC. She enjoyed gardening and working in her yard. She also enjoyed fishing when she was younger. Ardis liked to go out for coffee with her many good friends. She was a cancer survivor and joined the cancer survivor walk every June. Her greatest joy came from time spent with her nieces, nephews and great nephews and niece.

Grateful for having shared Ardis life are her brothers, Arthur Schlenker, Jr., Cheyenne, WY, and Arlan Schlenker, Huron, SD, sisters, Arlene Bain, Aberdeen, and Arla Weifenbach, Aurora, SD, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and several great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant sister, three brothers-in-law, and a great nephew.

HARLEY KUSHMAN

The funeral service for Harley Paul Kushman, 87, Aberdeen, will be 10am, Saturday, November 6, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Aberdeen with Pastor Nathan Henschen and Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Aberdeen. Harley died Friday, October 29, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation is 1-7pm Friday, November 5, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, Aberdeen.

Harley Paul Kushman was born on December 27, 1922 to Paul W. and Geneva A. (Gunderson) Kushman at Mina, SD. He attended rural school south of Mina and then attended Warner High School. As a young man he worked on the family farm. He worked for a short time at Omaha, NE and at Dayton, OH. Harley joined the Army and was trained as an aircraft mechanic at Wright Field. He left the Army and returned to the family farm near Mina. In 1947, they sold the farm following the death of his father, but farming was always in his blood. The family moved to Napa, CA where he worked as a Construction Assistant Supervisor for Basalt Block Co.

Harley married Dolores Jean Stanley on June 21, 1953 at Napa, CA. While working at the block company, he took college classes at night. Harley retired in 1971 and they moved to Aberdeen in 1983. He continued to make Aberdeen his home.

Harley was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He had a strong faith in God and was a fine Christian man. God bestowed upon him many talents and indescribable virtues. Harley was able to do almost anything he set his mind to. He took flying lessons, a boating course and was tinkering in horticulture. Harley even drew up the plans for a house and built it himself. He and Dolores loved to travel and spend time at their cabin on Scatterwood Lake. He even enjoyed mowing the lawn at the lake on his new mower. Harley was always there for others and always willing to lend a helping hand. Harley had a unique sense of humor. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Harley was a wonderful man and was liked by all.

Grateful for having shared Harley’s life are his wife of 58 years, Dolores of Aberdeen, son, Glenn P. Kushman of Aberdeen, daughter, Karen Burns of Owatonna, MN, his grandson, Ryan P. Kushman of Aberdeen who has lived with his grandparents his entire life, and his brother, Leonard (Faye) Kushman of Napa, CA.

Harley was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Geneva, brothers, Warren, Delbert, Clark, Ervin and Gordon and sisters, Ruth Rieck and Evelyn Miller.

The family prefers memorials to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

HAZEL L. DROWN SAWINSKY HOVEN

On Thursday, October 28, 2010, Hazel L. Drown Sawinsky Hoven of Aberdeen peacefully went home to be with the angels in Heaven. She had the distinction at 108 years of age of being Aberdeen’s oldest citizen.

Funeral service for Hazel will be 1:00pm, Monday, November 1, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. Rev. Tom Haggar will officiate. Interment will be at Selby Memory Gardens Cemetery on Monday, November 1. Graveside prayers will be offered. Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Sheldon, Iowa on July 23, 1902, to Ralph and Pearl Drown, she was the middle child of five. She graduated from Sheldon High School and attended the University of South Dakota. She also enjoyed a course from Famous Art School. Hazel married Lloyd A. Sawinsky in 1923. Onto this union three children were born, Gene, Sybil and Mary. She worked with her husband, on a farm, in their bakery, and in the L and H grocery store in Selby. They had a movie theatre in Onida before settling in Aberdeen in 1950. They were in the grocery business until Lloyd’s death in 1963. Hazel was a hostess for the Aberdeen Welcome Wagon. She married John W. Hoven, Selby postmaster, in 1969 and returned to Selby for several years. At this time, two adult children, John and Vikki, were added to the family. While in Selby, John and Hazel loved horses and raised Arabians as well as attending many horse sales.

Hazel was a member of the Aberdeen Toastmistress Club, a proud Daughter of the American Revolution member and attended First United Methodist Church.

She was a 48 year cancer survivor.

Hazel had a passion for writing poetry and as an artist. Her talent was visibly seen in her oil paintings and charcoals. Northern State University, Presentation College, Aberdeen Airport, and several South Dakota cities displayed her art work. The South Dakota Poetry Magazine, Pasque Petals, printed many of her poems. The Sioux Falls Argus Leader and Aberdeen American News printed the poem, “Whispers of the Past,” that demonstrated her love for South Dakota, the prairie, and her parents who homesteaded near Selby. The poems she wrote about family members provides a loving and cherished memory for them. In addition, Hazel loved music and played the piano and wrote several songs with her sister, Laura. She knit many Afghans and also enjoyed ceramics in earlier years. She was an avid bridge player and played games with her family.

Those left to honor and cherish her memory are children, Lloyd E Sawinsky (Beverly); Sybil Sawinsky Sedivy (Wesley); Mary Sawinsky Lamont (Glenn deceased); John Paul Hoven (Cheryl); and Victoria Hoven Foley (Don). Grandchildren include Jeff, Chris (Marni) and Todd Lamont, Aberdeen; Danielle Miller (Russ) Rapid City; Lee Bakos (Mike) and Lisa Gallien (Richard) Manhatten Beach, CA; Vikki Hoven San Francisco, CA; Jeremy Eastman (Amy) Redondo Beach, CA; Mark Eastman Hermosa Beach, CA, six great grandchildren and 5 nieces and nephews.

Welcoming her in heaven are, husbands, Lloyd A. Sawinsky, and John W. Hoven; son-in-law, Glenn Lamont; parents, Ralph and Pearl Drown; and brothers, Ernest and Claude Drown; sisters, Mildred Drown Potter, and Laura Drown Crawford Christian.

Hazel’s love for family and friends and her sense of humor, spunk and spirit kept her young at heart well into her 100s. Her ability to see humor and to share that humor was truly a gift. She was a blessing to her family and a dedicated and devoted mother. She had an influence and love and a joyful outlook on life that gave strength to all of us. Our mother will be sadly missed.

The family expresses their sincere thanks to the staff of Nano Nagle and Mother Joseph Manor for their loving kindness and tender compassionate care provided for Hazel. Special thanks to Dr. Gerber for her care over so many years.

LEON FLEMMER

The funeral service Leon Flemmer, 79, of Aberdeen will be 11:00am, Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen. Pastor Marcia Sylvester will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Leon died Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Leon Flemmer, son of David and Katherina (Bader) Flemmer, was born on August 17, 1931 at Napoleon, ND. As a child the family moved to the Tolstoy, SD area. In 1940, the family moved to the Java, SD area where he attended Java High School until he entered the United States Marine Corps and served in Korea. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1954 at El Toro, CA.

Leon began making his home in Aberdeen where he worked construction and drove for Allied Van until 1956 when he moved to California and began working for Douglas Air Craft. He returned to Aberdeen and worked for Dakota Sash and Door until 1959. He then became employed as a cook for Home Brand Foods in Northeast Minneapolis until his retirement in 1993.

In his free time Leon enjoyed dancing and bowling.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

SUE ROCK

Funeral services for Sue Rock, 77, Webster will be 10:30 am, Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Groton United Methodist Church with Pastor Matt Richards officiating. Inurnment will be at Groton Union Cemetery at a laterdate. Sue died Friday, October 22, 2010 at the Webster Hospital.

Visitation will be from 2-7 pm, Tuesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.

She was born Marisue Caskey September 7, 1933 in Ball Club, Minnesota to Clarence E Caskey and Ethel Caskey. She attended Black Duck High School graduating in 1951 and attended Bemidji Business School and graduated in 1952. She married Mathieu Rock on May 5th 1968. He already had a daughter, Judy Lillie, from his first marriage bringing their family up to six daughters with Shari Haux, Jill Stewart, Jeninel Hartman, Karla Hohneke and Tracey Rock. Then she later met Ed Kwasniewski adding Gary and Jennifer Kwasniewski to the family.

She lived in Blackduck, Minnesota; Greenville, California; Aberdeen, South Dakota; Groton, South Dakota; and Webster, South Dakota. She spent most of her years in accounting and bookkeeping, in her later years she enjoyed working for the U.S. Census Bureau.

Marisue was a member of The United Methodist Church of Groton South Dakota, The VFW, and American Legion Auxiliary. Sue loved gardening, knitting, quilting, being at the lake, fishing, and spending time with her family.

Marisue was lucky enough to share her life with an extraordinary large family, her significant other, Ed Kwasniewski; daughters, Judy Lillie, Shari (Fred) Haux, Jill Stewart, Jeninel (Tim) Hartman, Karla (Stan) Hohneke, and Tracey Rock; grandchildren, Shane (Robin) Haux, Stefanie (Troy) Downard, Jennifer Thurman, Jeff (Micky) Thurman, Tom (Barb) Thurman, Kelly Thurman, Christopher (Sherri) Kaus, Dawn (Jeremy) Judd, Chad Wilkens, Dirk Wilkens, Mathieu Wilkens, Alexandra Wilkens, Victoria Wilkens; and great-grandchildren Ramsey, Bret, Justin, Levi, Dillon, Tyler, Taylor, Marcus, Michael, Hannah, Allison, Sophia, Julian, Rachael, Chris, Koti, Baily, Tara, Levi, Alia, Nick, Cavin, Ethan, Nikita, Natasha, Nadia, Carson and Hannah, siblings James Keith (Kiki) Caskey, Earlean “Boots” Cameron, Shirlee Smith and Judith Scott.

Marisue was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ethel Caskey, husband, Mathieu Rock, grandson, Michael Thurman, sisters; Patricia Stern, Geraldine Petersen, and brother, Kenneth Caskey.

ROSE E. SCHNUERLE

The funeral service for Rose Schnuerle, 100, Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Monday, October 25, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Gary Wileman officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Rose died Thursday, October 21, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Rose E. Kub was born on December 30, 1909 to Albert and Marie (Staska) Kub at rural Ipswich, SD. She grew up and attended school in that area. She later moved to Aberdeen and attended the Aberdeen Business College. After graduation, she went to work for the Aberdeen American News where she was employed for eighteen years.

Rose married Herbert J. Schnuerle on May 4, 1946 in Denver, CO. They lived in several states before returning to Aberdeen to take over the family business of Schnuerle Sand and Gravel. They operated the business for twenty-five years before retiring. Herbert died on July 10, 1994.

Grateful for having shared Rose’s life are her step-daughter, Bonnie Gallaer, Coeur d’Alene, ID, three step-grandchildren, Laurie, Tammie & Tina, three step-great grandchildren, one step-great-great grandchild, nieces, Judy Preston, Omaha, NE, and Jean Crompton, Aberdeen.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Herbert, two brothers, John Kub, Frank Kub and one sister, Marie Schurr.

George Rhodes, 85, Aberdeen, died Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at Golden Living Center, Redfield, SD.

Harriet Schuler, 93, Aberdeen, died Sunday, November 21, 2010 at Wheatcrest Hills Nursing Home in Britton, SD.

ELMER JAMES BITZ

Funeral services for Elmer James Bitz, 61, Aberdeen will be 11 am, Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Elmer died Tuesday, May 10 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Friday at the funeral home.

Elmer James Bitz was born on February 24, 1950 in Eureka, SD to Henry and Gertrude (Bender) Bitz. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. He worked for farmers in the Eureka area and then moved to Aberdeen where he worked for Twin City Roofing. Later he went to work for Grote Roofing where he worked for over forty years retiring in November 2010 due to his health. On April 15, 1974 he married Judy A. Nissen at Webster, SD.

He was devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren and loved attending their activities. He loved reading the Bible and collecting coins. He was a past bowler.

Grateful for having share Elmer’s life are his wife, Judy Bitz, Aberdeen, children, Troy (Tami) Penrod, Sioux Falls, Tami (Chris) Feiock, Stacey Bitz and Jeremy (Lindee) Bitz, all of Aberdeen, grandchildren, Samantha Penrod, Brooklyn Feiock, Matthew Feiock, Mikayla Bitz and Gavin Bitz, brothers and sisters, Angie Haak, Sioux Falls, Wilmer (Judy) Bitz, Maricop, AZ, Judy Huffman, Lexington, NC, Gerold (Louise) Bitz, Aberdeen, Albert Bitz, Boone, IA, Susie (Melvin) Gehring, Las Vegas, NV and Barbara Bitz, Aberdeen.

Elmer is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Gertrude Bitz, brother and sisters, Marty Bitz, Peggy Donne, Sandy Bitz, Janet Borchard and Mary Albertson.
