TENA IDA HUMANN

Funeral service for Tena Ida Humann, 89, Aberdeen will be 1:30pm Thursday May 12, 2011, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Pastor D. Thomas Rawerts will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Tena died Monday, May 9, 2011 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Wednesday May 11, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Tena Ida Schock, daughter of Karl and Magdalena (Hoffman) Schock was born on July 6, 1921 in McPherson County, SD. This is the area where she was raised and attended school. Tena remained on the family farm and helped her parents for several years.

Tena was united in marriage to Julius Humann on October 12, 1941 near Ashley, ND. Together they made their home on a farm near Long Lake, SD where they remained until 1963. At this time they began making their home in Aberdeen. Tena began to work as a nanny for several families in the Aberdeen area for many years. Her husband Julius died on June 9, 2004. Tena remained in Aberdeen until the time of her death.

Tena was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Aberdeen and was grateful for the many visits and countless hours spent with Pastor Rawerts over the years.

Casket bearers will be Mike Sommers, Wayne Buechler, Lee Buechler, Sanro Fink, Lyle Wiedmann and Claude Wahl.

Honorary casket bearers will be all of Tena’s grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, Shirley Sommers, and Marv and Sherry Tebben and family.

Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters, Myra (Jerry) Conklin of Pierre and Betty (Richard) Kauk of Rapid City; grandchildren Russell (Lori) Stager, Rick Stager and Laura (Phillip) Howland; great grandchildren Brandi, Amanda, Katie, Chance, Kegan, Bennett, Andrew, Mathew, Spencer, Kylie, Kristopher and Kody; three great great grandchildren and two sisters Olivia (Adolph) Sperle and LaVerna Schumacher.

Tena was preceded in death by her parents Karl and Magdalena Schock, husband Julius Humann, and one sister Elsie Rall.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

EDWARD E. BERRETH

Funeral service for Edward E. Berreth, 89, Aberdeen will be 2 pm, Thursday, May 12 at North Highland UMC with Pastor Mark Ehrmantraut officiating and military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Edward died on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Edward E. Berreth was on born February 3, 1922 on a farm north of Artas, SD to Edward and Christina (Munsch) Berreth.

Edward attended elementary school at a rural farm school. His first two years of high school were at Artas and he graduated from Zealand High School in North Dakota. After completing a one year teaching course at Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and he taught rural school for two years.

Edward married Dorothy Pauline Heiser on October 24, 1944 at Greenway, SD. On March 13, 1945 he entered the service during WWII serving with the 13th Airforce in the Philippines until being discharged in 1946. He took additional courses of study at the University of the Philippines at night. After his discharge from the Airforce he went back to Northern, earning degrees in teaching, and both BS and MS in business administration.

After twenty-eight years of teaching Edward retired and operated a drive-in at Britton, SD.

Edward was a member of North Highland United Methodist Church. He also volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels and entertained the elderly with the Friendship Singers. While operating the drive-in, he and his wife, would spend their winters in the warmer climates.

Grateful for having shared Edward’s life are his wife, Dorothy Berreth, Aberdeen, Daughters, Joyce (Richard) Nelson, Aberdeen, Janell (Richard) Breyer, Doylestown, PA, Kristi (Steve) Ackerson, Aberdeen, and Cassandra (Bill) Eppard, Aberdeen, 11 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren, and two sisters, Lorine Lutz and Edna Johnson.

Edward was preceeded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ida Hatch, Lorine Berreth, eight brothers, Edwin, Arthur, Albert, Alvin, Benjamin, Benjamin, Benjamin and Milbert.

EDWARD H. TUNBY

Memorial service for Edward H. Tunby, 90 of Houghton, SD will be 2:00pm, Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Aberdeen Alliance Church, 1106 S. Roosevelt Street, Aberdeen. Rev. William Duncan will officiate. Edward died on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital in Aberdeen.

Edward Heyerdahl Tunby was born on January 6, 1921 in Brown County, SD, to Edward and Olga (Wenger) Tunby. He lived in the Hecla and Houghton area his entire life. He attended rural grade schools and graduated in 1939 from Hecla High School. In the fall of 1940, he attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, majoring in Animal Husbandry. He joined the Army R.O.T.C. program in his junior year (1942) and was called to active service duty in World War II in 1943, serving with the 101st Airborne as a 1st Lieutenant. Edward received the Purple Heart Award for his injuries at the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium in 1945. He returned to the U.S. in early 1946 and finished his college education.

On June 20, 1947, he married Inez Schwarting in Aberdeen. They farmed west of Hecla until moving to their permanent farmstead east of Houghton in 1950, where they raised their family. Edward was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Houghton and later the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Houghton. His quiet demeanor, wit and wisdom, and strong work ethic endeared Edward to his family and friends. He enjoyed farming into his 80's.

Grateful for having shared his long, fruitful life are his four children - Edward Lee (Pam) Tunby of Morehead City, NC; Ann (Michael) Shinnick of Sioux Falls; Lars (Darinda) Tunby of Houghton; and Beth (Scott) Meissner of Orange City, IA; 13 grandchildren - Dawn and Eric (Alicia) Tunby; John and Sarah Shinnick; Chantel (Orrin) Hughes, Shawna, Krista, Dawson and Sierra Tunby; and Jessica (Jason) De Boom, Steven (Morgan) Meissner, Jennifer (Michael) Vermeer and Jill Meissner; 5 great-grandchildren - Trinity Tunby; Marion and Jewel Hughes; and Reece and Ella De Boom; a sister Myra (Paul) Michaud; a sister-in-law Mable (Verne) Tunby, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceeded in death by his wife, Inez, on March 22, 1979; his parents; 2 brothers - Verne and Merlin, and 3 sisters - Elizabeth, Dorothy and Marian.

KATHY SANDERSON

Services for Kathy Sanderson, 69, Aberdeen are 2 pm, Saturday, May 7, at First Baptist Church, Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 1-7 pm, Friday, family present from 5-7, prayer service at 7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

Our beloved Kathy was called home to heaven in the gentle, loving hands of Jesus in the early evening May 1, 2011. Early that morning Pastors, H. E. Salem, Gary Compton, loving family, and compassionate caring Hospice Staff were present to celebrate the final hours of her life.

Kathleen Ann Lovering was born on June 19th, 1941, to Royce and Joyce Lovering in Buffalo Lake, Minnesota. She grew up in Granite Falls, MN, attending school there and graduating from High School in 1959. Aunt Hattie Curr guided her to Northern State Teachers College where she earned an Elementary Teaching Certificate in 1961 and completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1975. Kathy taught lower elementary classes in Hecla and Aberdeen SD. She retired from teaching in May, 1998.

Kathy was united in marriage to Charles Sanderson in Granite Falls, MN on Dec. 29, 1962. This marriage was blessed with four children, Sherri, David, Scott and Mary. Kathy used her quiet strong faith in Jesus Christ to bless her husband and growing children and many others. Kathy’s smile would light up a room and encourage the hearts of those near her. Kathy possessed many virtues, “but above all these things put on Love”, which she shared with all especially her husband of 48yrs, 4months.

This smile continued to be the essence of her life until MSA a progressive neurological disorder would eventually make impossible for her to see, speak, move or smile. She cheerfully struggled with this for nine years. When she was diagnosed with bilateral cancer in January 2010 a compassionate, dedicated, caring Hospice team ministered to her. Kathy was at home through the duration of these illnesses.

Kathy treasured several great loves. She loved her redeeming Lord Jesus; her family; First Baptist Church, Pastor Salem, her students; her gardens; birds; nature; hiking; traveling; mountains; oceans; and pets especially cats, dogs, horses, and yes baby gophers. She demonstrated the nurturing love of a super-mom. She cherished her nephews and nieces and often would have them during summer visits at the farm. We will all miss her, however, cherished memories of her will abide.

Grateful for having shared Kathy’s life are her husband, children, grandchildren, sister, Mary (Wayne) Olson, Plymouth MN; brother, David (Christie) Lovering, Pine River MN; 10 nephews and 4 nieces and many grandnephews and grandnieces.

Memorials may be designated: 1) North Plains Hospice or 2) Shy-Drager Research Fund, Vanderbilt University.

ARDELL S. DAHME

Services for Ardell S. Dahme, 86, Aberdeen will be 3:00pm, Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Aberdeen. Pastor Lloyd Redhage officiating. Burial in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. Ardell died on Friday, April 29 at Bethesda Town Square.

Visitation: 1:00-7:00pm, Monday, May 2, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Ardell Sarah Kienow, daughter of Henry and Julia (Nelson) Kienow was born on February 4, 1925 on the family farm west of Warner, SD. This is the area where she was raised and attended school. Ardell was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Warner. She went on to graduate from Warner High School and also attended Northern State College in Aberdeen for one year. Following college she taught school for one year near Mina, SD.

Ardell was united in marriage to Harvey Dahme on September 20, 1944 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Aberdeen. Together they made their home on the Dahme family farm near Mina where they raised their family. They remained on the farm until November of 2001 when they began making their home in Aberdeen. Harvey died on June 24, 2002.

Ardell was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church for many years. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and touring the United States. In her free time she enjoyed playing cards and baking. Ardell was also an avid scrapbooker and enjoyed doing crafts. During her time at Town Square she was active in many of the activities that were offered.

Grateful for having shared her life are two children, Craig (Deb) Dahme, Mina; and Valerie Dahme, Sioux Falls; grandchildren Kristin (Kevin Dailey) Anderson, Tim Dahme, Troy (Lisa) Dahme, Megan (Blake) Sabers, Missi (Tony) Ohmacht and Marne (Brent) Neiger, and great grandchildren, Zachary Anderson, Kaitlin, Austin and Nathan Dahme, Morgan and Maggie Dahme, Jared, Hillary and Karson Holland, Tyson, Brynlee and Kade Sabers and Bria and Ayden Ohmacht.

Ardell was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Julia Kienow, husband Harvey Dahme, brother John Kienow, sister Lucille Lohner, son Neale Dahme and great grandson Blair Neiger.

GREG D. WIEDEBUSH

Services for Greg D. Wiedebush, 40, Mellette, will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, May 3 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mansfield, SD with Pastor Lloyd Redhage and Vicar Bret Bierman officiating. Greg died Friday, April 29, 2011 near Brentford, SD.

A time to sign the guest book will be from 1-7 pm, Monday with a prayer service at 7 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Gregory Dennis Wiedebush was born on April 15, 1971 at Aberdeen, SD to Dennis and Lynda (Stucker) Wiedebush. He attended school in Warner and graduated with the class of 1989. He then attended Lake Area Vo Tech for two years. He moved to Onida where he worked for Oahe Seed and Grain and later worked for UAP. He moved to Huron where he married Katrina Luken on August 11, 2001. They moved to Clark where he worked for TJ Technologies. In 2008 he attended Auctioneer School in Iowa. He worked for Clark Sales and Jark Worlie Auctioneeer Service and Jark Realty. He was the owner of GKL Enterprises and GKL Rentals. He was also a dealer for Dakota Grills. In 2010 they moved to Mellette where he worked for American Trust Insurance.

Greg was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mansfield. Lauren was the apple of his eye. He loved spending time with her and loved his wife very much. Greg was a people person, getting involved in the community was his hobby. He also enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson and golfing with Lauren.

Grateful for having shared Greg’s life are his wife, Katrina Wiedebush, daughter, Lauren Wiedebush, both of Mellette, parents, Dennis and Lynda Wiedebush, Aberdeen, brother, Joel (Stacie Toennies) Wiedebush, sister-in-laws, Debbie (John) Rieck, Denise (Herman) Ottenbacher, Ursula (Todd) Johnson, uncles and aunts, Maryl (Earl) Anderson, Randy (Carol) Wiedebush, Karin Eppard, Robert (Delores) Luken, many nieces and nephews and K-9 best friend, Ricky.

Greg is preceded in death by brother, Gary Carl Wiedebush, grandparents, Carl and Verda Wiedebush, Ray and Mary Stucker, aunt, Sharon Wiedebush, uncle, Donald Stucker, parents-in-law, Roger and Frances Luken, and brother-in-law, Roger A. Luken.

FRED F. STERN

Services for Fred F. Stern, 102, Aberdeen, will be at 11:00am, Saturday, April 30, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating and with military honors by Sidney L. Smith, American Legion Post 24. Burial will be at a later date at the Ipswich Cemetery. Fred died Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.

Visitation will be 1:00-7:00pm Friday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S Main.

Fred Frank Stern was born October 21, 1908, Webster, Day Co. South Dakota, the 10th child of George and Katharine Schneider Stern.

In 1917 he moved with his family to a farm in Liberty Township, Edmunds Co. South Dakota. He completed the 8th grade at Liberty View School and worked on the family farm. On June 10, 1942, he was inducted into the US Army at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota. He completed basic training at Camp Rucker, Alabama, and then married Opal Mae Barton November 25, 1942 at Ipswich, and returned to duty, training in Arizona and California. From June 1944 to November 1945 he served in the Palau Islands and the Southern Philippines with Co. H, 322nd Infantry, 81st Division. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. On November 5, 2008,

Fred was awarded The Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in active ground combat, Anguar Island on October 1, 1944. He also received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and one Bronze arrowhead, the Army of Occupation Medal with Japan Clasp, and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. Following his discharge from the Army December 8, 1945, he joined his wife in Bremerton, Washington. In April 1946, they returned to Loyalton. In March 1949 they moved to the Stulc farm northeast of Loyalton and farmed until September 1966 when they moved to Aberdeen. He worked for Brown Co. Implement before spending a number of years as a self-employed painter and handyman.

In his younger years, he was on the Loyalton baseball team. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, football, and other sports on TV. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. In March 2009, he moved to Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen and the American Legion, Post #67 Ipswich.

He was preceded in death by wife, Opal, 1995; daughter, Mardythe, 1949, great-granddaughter, Jaden Green, 1993, parents, brothers, Philip, Steven, Daniel, John, George, Edward, and Albert; sisters, Emma Loterbauer, Martha Walker, Catherine O’Brien, and Louise Doerr, and several nieces and nephews.

Survived by two daughters: Janice (Roger) Green, Topeka, KS, Wanda Lemke, Brighton, Co; two sons: Douglas Stern, Aberdeen, Randy (Cindy) Stern, Aberdeen; nine grandchildren: Crystal Miller, Topeka, KS, Jeff (Karin) Green, Gig Harbor, WA, Brad (Libby) Green, Tecumseh, KS, Lisa (Robert) Martinez, Brighton, CO, Lori (Tony) Deluna-Martinez, Brighton, CO, Lynn (Bill) Miller, Ft. Lupton, Co, Carissa and Ryan Stern, Aberdeen, Lisa Runnels, Aberdeen; 17 great grandchildren: McKenna and Anja Green, Gig Harbor, WA, John, Robert, and Charles Williamson-Green, Brianna and Rebekah Green, Tecumseh, KS, Christopher and Nicole Garland, Dominic Martinez, Carlita Luevano, Melina,Sofia, and Diego Deluna-Martinez, Brighton, CO, Sarah Miller, Ft. Lupton, CO; Gabe Hill, West Jordan, UT, and Camryn Stern, Aberdeen; one sister: Lillian Allbee, Northfield, MN; one sister-in-law, Clara Stern, Bristol, and many nieces and nephews.

LAVERNE C. SWENSON

Services for LaVerne C. Swenson, 89, Aberdeen and formerly of Bath, will be 10:30am, Friday, April 29, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. LaVerne died on Tuesday, April 26 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation was Thursday, April 28 from 1:00-7:00pm with family present from 5:00-7:00pm and a prayer service at 7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

LaVerne Carlyle Swenson, son of Severt and Karine (Hunstad) Swenson was born on November 3, 1921 in Brown County, SD. He was raised on the family farm near Bath. LaVerne attended Hunstad School and went on to graduate from Bath High School. He later attended Northern Normal and Industrial School in Aberdeen from 1939-1941. At this time he began farming.

LaVerne was united in marriage to Della Bean on October 17, 1943 in Bath. They made their home on a farm south of Bath where they raised their family. They also opened their home to two foreign exchange students. This is where they remained for the next 55 years prior to moving into Aberdeen in 1998. Together LaVerne and Della stayed active in couples bowling leagues as well as a Whist Card Club. Della died on April 30, 2002.

LaVerne was a kind and caring man and will be dearly missed by his family and by those who knew him. He lived his life according to the Golden Rule and did unto others as he would have them do unto him. Throughout his life he felt that the gesture of a smile was an easy and simple gift to give to everyone. He never complained and always accepted all things that came his way. Those that knew him will remember how appreciative LaVerne was for everything. LaVerne will be remembered for his strong faith and love for his family. He was a loyal friend and was passionate about his community and farming.

LaVerne was active in many groups, boards and activities. He was an active member of both Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Scandinavia Lutheran Church of Aberdeen. Over the years he served as the President of the Bath School Board, was an active member of the Elks Club and the Sons of Norway. He was also a member of the Oahe Board and sat on the Board of Directors for South Dakota Wheat Growers for several years. LaVerne taught High School Sunday School at Scandinavia Lutheran Church and was also a 4-H Leader. He was a member of the Water Resource Development Board, Toast Masters, the Farmers Union Board, Soil Conservation Board and was also active member for many years on the Brown County Fair Board. LaVerne was also a Dekalb seed dealer for 30 years.

LaVerne was an avid sports fan enjoying Minnesota Vikings football and Minnesota Twins and Aberdeen Golden Pheasants baseball.

Grateful for having shared LaVerne’s life are two daughters, Nancy Stange, Aberdeen; Jeanne Swenson, Montevideo, MN; two sons, Stu Swenson and Reed (Kathy) Swenson both of Aberdeen, grandchildren, Doug (Vicci) Stange, Darin (Dee) Stange, Heather (Kim) Spence, Allison (Derek) Salzman, Dusti, Hayley, Drew and Ryan Swenson, great grandchildren, Alexandra, Jamesen, Kayde and Tyton Stange and Kristen, Harleigh and Bryce Winther, sister-in-law Hazel Swenson and brother-in-law Earl Stahl.

LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sisters Irene Swenson and Gladys Hoefert, brother Ernest Swenson, brother-in-law Bob Hoefert, sister-in-law Joyce Stahl and son-in-law Leland Stange.

The family prefers memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Avenue NE, Bethesda Home of Aberdeen, 1224 South High Street or North Plains Hospice, 305 South State Street all of Aberdeen, SD 57401.
