RICHARD “DICK” L. PAULSON

Service for Richard “Dick” L. Paulson, 78, Aberdeen is 2:00pm, Monday, March 21 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Chapel. Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial, Riverside Memorial Park. Military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24. Richard died Sunday, March 13 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab after an eight year battle with Alzheimer’s.

Visitation, Sunday from 4:00-7:00pm, family present, 5:00-7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

Richard Lee Paulson was born November 10, 1932 in Sioux Falls, SD and was adopted through the Children’s Home Society by Hugo and Gena (Ronshaugen) Paulson of Pierpont, SD. He graduated from Pierpont High School in 1950. On December 31, 1952, he married Doris Hall of Aberdeen. In January 1953, he enlisted in the Air Force and received basic training at Park AF Base in California. He received radio technician schooling at Scott Field, Belleville, IL. He did radio maintenance with guided missile squadron in Rabat, French Morocco, Patrick AF Base, Cocoa, FL and on the Texas Tower Radar Warning System out of North Truro, MA.

After his discharge in January 1957, he went to work for Page Communications on the Texas Tower. In 1958, he enrolled at SDSU, graduating in 1961. He worked for G.A.B. as an insurance adjuster out of Aberdeen, later with St. Paul Fire and Marine as a field supervisor. In 1981, he was named Field Man of the Year by the Independent Insurance Agents of SD. He retired early in 1988 and worked for Norwest Bank part time.

In 1982, they moved to a new home at Mina Lake as they had a cottage there since 1968. Upon complete retirement, they traveled the world and enjoyed many cruises with land stops to explore. In 2007, they returned to Aberdeen.

Richard was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and American Legion. Past member of Sertoma, Elks and Blue Goose.

Richard is survived by his wife Doris, children, Ingrid (Rodney) Place, Ames, IA, Robert (Shirley) Knoxville, TN, and Ronald, Parker, CO, grandchildren, Kirsti (Jason) Minion, Nicholas, Rolf (Layne Grubb) and Marit Place, great grandson, Leif Minion.

His parents preceded him in death.

ROBERT B. LAMONT

The memorial service for Robert Byron Lamont, 96, of Aberdeen will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 19, 2011 at First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. Rev. Eldon Reich will be officiating.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, in Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

Robert passed away on Friday, March 11, 2011 at Angelhaus Regional Basic Care Center in Aberdeen where he has been living since February 2005.

Robert Lamont was born February 23, 1915 to Maurice and Margaret Mather Lamont in Aberdeen. The following year his father Maurice was killed in a hunting accident and he was raised by his mother and by au pair Rose Wade who had also attended at his mother’s birth outside of Groton. He articulated through the Aberdeen school system and graduated in 1933 from Central High School. He attended Northwestern and The University of South Dakota graduating in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He was President of his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi while he was there. Upon graduating he married his sweetheart, Ruth Martens of Pierre whom he had met while at school. While in school he had enrolled in Military Science and so at graduation he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. He was called to active duty and was further trained at Fort Benning and at Duke University. When war broke out he was sent overseas and spent the balance of the war headquartered in London. After the war he worked with his brother as a mortgage banker in his grandfathers (B.C. Lamont) business. He later became a farmer and rancher to keep better track of their investments in the cattle industry. Robert, along with his brother Bill and E.C. Rhodes were the founders of Dacotah Bank.

Robert was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. He was a member of the Aberdeen Boy Scouts Troop #10 for over 70 years, achieving the Beaver Award. Robert always cared for dogs and enjoyed working with his Angus herd that he started and refined over the years. Robert was a hardworking man who was always generous with what he had worked for. He helped many people through the years. Robert will always be remembered as a man of integrity.

Surviving are one son Robert (Bonnie) Lamont Jr. of Aberdeen; three daughters Betsy (Jason) Groves of Rapid City, Wendy Lamont of Aberdeen, Molly (Darrel Stahl) of Huron, one daughter-in-law Mary Lamont, 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, parents, Maurice and Margaret, brother William Lamont, and one son, Glenn Lamont.

The family prefers memorials to the First United Methodist Church Organ Restoration Fund.

ROBERT C. ACKERMAN

The funeral service for Robert C. Ackerman, 66, of Aberdeen, will be held at 11am Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota. Robert passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home located at 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Robert Christ Ackerman was born January 25, 1945, to Christian and Magdelina (Oberlander) Ackerman of Aberdeen, South Dakota. He was a born and raised in Aberdeen and attended Aberdeen Central High School. In 1963, Robert entered the United States Air Force and served in the Vietnam War.

In January of 1967, Robert married Jacqueline Naasz of Mobridge, South Dakota. Together, they had one daughter, Shannon. Robert retired from the Air Force after more than 20 years of honorable service. During his military career, he was stationed all over the world including Okinawa, Japan and Ramstein, Germany. After retiring from active duty, Robert continued to serve the Air Force as a civil servant and retired for a second time out of Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. Robert returned home to Aberdeen and became a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Robert enjoyed watching old western movies, fishing, hunting, playing cards, and spending time with his family. He was well liked by all who knew him.

Grateful for having shared Robert’s life are his daughter Shannon and her husband Robert Davis of Fredericksburg, VA, sisters Leona (Paul) Crane of Richmond, VA, Verna Tolson of Aberdeen, Myrlene Weishaar of West Bend, WI, JoAnn Ackerman of Aberdeen, and brothers Raymond (Judy) Ackerman of Aberdeen, and Richard (Karen) Ackerman of Aberdeen and grandsons Brody and Colton Davis of Fredericksburg, VA. Robert had several nieces and nephews including Robert Little who was his helping hand and fishing partner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Bernice and brother Harold.

AUBREY WOLFF

The funeral service for Aubrey Wolff, 83, Aberdeen, will be 1:30pm, Monday, March 7, 2011 at Plymouth Congregational UCC, with Pastor Jill Warner officiating. Military honors will be provided by Sydney L. Smith American Legion Post #24. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Aubrey died Friday, March 4, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 2-4pm, Sunday, March 6, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Aubrey Wolff was born August 16, 1927, to Gottlieb & Ida (Delker) Wolff at Eureka, SD. He grew up in the Eureka area and graduated from Eureka High School.

Aubrey joined the US Air Force in January 1946 and was honorably discharged in March of 1947. Aubrey moved to Aberdeen after he got home from the service. He worked for International Harvester, Smith Truck Sales and Aberdeen Equipment and retired in 1989.

Aubrey married Norma Nilsson Gates on July 2, 1960. They made their home in Aberdeen.

Aubrey was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, AARP, the American Legion Club and also helped deliver meals on wheels for several years.

He had a hobby farm for many years. Aubrey enjoyed riding horseback and snowmobiling. Over the years Aubrey raised and trained several colts. He enjoyed traveling with his wife.

Grateful for having shared Aubrey’s life are his wife Norma, two sons, Gary Wolff, Missoula, MT, Dennis (Sheila) Wolff, Billings, MT, two step-sons, Larry Gates, Key Largo, FL, Ronald (Diana) Gates, Corpes, Christie, TX, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, sister, June Friske, Aberdeen, and brother, Clifford Wolff, Hosmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

The family would like say a special thank you to Mother Joseph Manor Adult Day Care, Angelhaus Staff, St. Luke’s Staff, Dr. Jundt, Dr. Reynen, Pastor Deborah Duffy, and Pastor Jill Warner.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be made to Plymouth Congregational UCC at Aberdeen or the NARFE Alzheimer’s Fund.

KERMITH R. MULLNER

After suffering a stroke in September, Kerm went to be with his Lord & Savior on March 2, 2011, at the age of 53.

Funeral is 2pm, Saturday, March 5, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, with Pastor Tom Haggar of First United Methodist Church.

Visitation is one hour prior to the service.

Kerm was born in Aberdeen on January 22, 1958 and married Rosetta Pullman November 10, 1979, in Redfield. To this union two sons were born.

Kerm was a Nascar fan and those attending the funeral are encouraged to wear their favorite Nascar shirt.

Grateful for having shared Kerm’s life are his wife, Rose, sons, Travis (Alana) Mullner, Tyler (Kandi) Mullner, grandson, Austin Wahl, mother, Leona Mullner.

The family would like to thank the Staff of Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Manor Care Nursing Home, Bethesda Hospital and St. Jospeph’s Hospital for the wonderful care provided.

MICHAEL GROSS

Memorial service for Michael Gross, 45, Aberdeen will be 10:00am, Monday, March 7, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Tom Haggar will officiate. Michael died Monday, February 28, 2011 at the Sanford Medical Center at Fargo, ND.

A time of remembrance will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2011 from 3:00-7:00pm with family present from 5:00-7:00pm and a prayer service beginning at 7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Michael Steele Gross was born on March 17, 1965 at Milbank, SD to Dennis and Patricia (Morrison) Gross. The family moved to the Aberdeen area in 1976. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School with the class of 1983. He entered the Army Reserves where he served during Desert Shield and Desert Storm until 1993 earning a medal for the Liberation of Kuwait. On January 29, 1984 he married Sheilah Klapkin at Aberdeen. Michael worked at various places in Aberdeen.

Michael was a Disabled Veteran and he was very active in BMX racing traveling around the country as a team manager for Mike’s Bikes. One could often find Mike behind a long line of BMX racers waiting for him to fix their bikes. His greatest joy was helping out others. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing and hunting. Mike really loved his grandchildren and his family.

Grateful for having shared Mike’s life are his wife, Sheilah Gross of Aberdeen, children, Jacey (Brent) Weig and Jordan Gross, grandchildren, Madyson, Peyton and Kaleigh, all of Aberdeen, parents, Dennis and Patricia Gross of Aberdeen, siblings, Mark (Anne) Gross of Sioux Falls, Melissa (Craig) Adam, Fullerton, ND, Matthew Gross of Aberdeen.

Mike is preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry and Marion McCracken, Bud Morrison, Doc and Effie Gross, niece, Jillian Adam, nephew, Shay Adam and cousins, Jeff Gold & Jill Steinle.

DORA GREWE

The funeral service for Dora M. Grewe, 83, Aberdeen, is 10 am, Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Major Robert McClintock officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Dora died Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Friday, with family present from 4-6 at the funeral home.

Dora May Wilson was born on January 6, 1928 at Aberdeen, SD to Swen and Esther (Dube) Wilson. She attended country school and after school she did house cleaning. On July 16, 1955 she married Warren Grewe at Ipswich, SD. They owned and operated Taylor Laundry and Dry Cleaning until 1996 when she sold the business to her children. Warren died on April 14, 1996 at Aberdeen. Dora was working for her children at the time of her death.

She attended The Salvation Army Community Center, she was member of the Ladies Ministry and was a Sunday School Teacher. She enjoyed sewing, baking, cooking, gardening, doing word finds and reading cook books. She loved watching sports with Steve and loved the Price Is Right. She especially loved her grandchildren and attending their activities. She loved her Lord and Savior and she lived it and taught it to her children.

Grateful for having shared Dora’s life are her children, Dan (Lori) Grewe, Susan Grewe, Steve Grewe and Kathy (Doug) Vilhauer all of Aberdeen, her granddaughters, Maris Grewe, Elle Grewe and Aimee Vilhauer and several nieces and nephews.

Dora is preceded in death by her husband, Warren Grewe, parents, Swen and Esther Wilson, grandson, Ryan Grewe, brothers, Vern Wilson, Selvin Wilson, Glen Wilson, Ed Wilson and Earl Wilson.

ESTELLA SVARSTAD

The funeral service for Estella Svarstad, 89, Burnsville MN, formerly of Aberdeen, will be 1:00pm, Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church, with Pastor Marcia Sylvester officiating. Burial will be at Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery, rural Bath. Estella died February 26, from complications of Parkinson’s Disease at Emerald Crest Assisted Living, Burnsville, MN.

Visitation will be 3-7pm, Friday, with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Estella Katherina Kulm was born September 27, 1921 to Christian Jr. and Louisa (Kubier) Kulm of Akaska, SD. She grew up on the family farm, graduated from Java High School, and completed her training as a beautician in Aberdeen. She later earned her manager’s license and operated her own beauty shop for nearly 15 years.

She married James Svarstad on Nov. 9, 1941 in Akaska, SD. They farmed in the Aberdeen area until 1990, when they retired and moved to Aberdeen. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and spending their winters in Texas. Estella also enjoyed quilting and volunteering at her church and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith (Franco) Florio of Eagan, MN and Bonnie Svarstad of Madison, WI; one sister, Elgerlien Ackerman of Helena, MT; one brother, Gale (Margaret) Kulm of Port Ludlow, WA; one sister-in-law, Frances Svarstad of Aberdeen; two grandchildren Anya (Jake) Powell of Duluth, MN, and Jason Florio (fiancée Jennifer Agnello) of Wauwatosa, WI; two great grandchildren, Norah and Stella Powell of Duluth, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband who died in 1996, her parents, two brothers, and one sister.

Her family is grateful for the loving care and support provided by her caregivers at Emerald Crest of Burnsville, her visiting care team from the Heartland Hospice Care, and her friend, Rosemary Dulas of Burnsville.

MIKE FELIX

The funeral service for Mike Felix, 84, Aberdeen, will be at 1pm Thursday March 3, 2011 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Sydney L. Smith Post #24. Mike lost his brave fight with cancer and ALS Saturday February 26, 2011 at his home.

Visitation will be 1-7pm with family present from 5-7, Wednesday March 2nd at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Mike was born June 20, 1926 to Frank and Carolyn (Steffen) Felix in Columbia SD. This is where he received his education. Mike served his country in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946, aboard the USS Saratoga. He received the grade of Seaman First Class.

In April of 1947, Mike began working for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, retiring in July of 1987. Mike and Gladys were married September 21, 1953, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aberdeen SD.

Mike was an active member of the church, life member of American Legion, V.F.W., Disabled American Veterans and a 60 year member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employee Division. From 1951 to 1983, Mike and Gladys worked for the concession stands at many area events. Mike enjoyed traveling, bowling, dartball, hunting, going dancing with Gladys and volunteer work. Mike and Gladys also were counselors for the Walter League Youth for many years, but he was happiest when with family and friends. His church life and his strong Christian faith were very important to Mike.

Mike is survived by his wife Gladys, son Roger (Cheryl) Felix, daughter Julaine (Donald) Hurst, brother Frank (Doris) Felix, sisters Mary Webb, Amelia Slaight and Anna Marie Bailey, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Andrew Felix, six half brothers and two half sisters.

Mike will be missed by all who knew him. We love you Dad.
