RICHARD DELANO STOEBNER

The funeral service for Richard Delano Stoebner, 77, of Aberdeen, will be 1:30pm, Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with military honors presented by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24. Dr. Harold E. Salem will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Richard died Wednesday, February 2, 2011 in Yankton, SD.

Visitation will be from 1:00-6:00pm, Friday, February 4, 2011 at the Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Richard Delano Stoebner was born on September 7, 1933 to Adam and Mary (Schnidt) Stoebner in Eureka, SD. This is the area where he was raised and attended school.

Richard enlisted in the United States Navy on December 8, 1955. He received his honorable discharge on January 20, 1958

Richard was united in marriage to Arvadella (Hruby) Goebel on April 14, 1973 in Aberdeen, SD. This is where the couple made their home until the time of his death. Richard was known to be a real jokester and for having a big heart. He loved music especially Polka’s and Waltz’s. Richard was an outstanding singer and also played the guitar and accordion.

Grateful for having shared Richard’s life are his wife Arvadella Stoebner of Aberdeen, one son Troy Stoebner of Aberdeen step children Melinda (Larry) Hopfinger of Aberdeen, Karen Hruby of Aberdeen, Donna (Lyle) Hopfinger of Mina, SD, Brian Hruby of Aberdeen, Scott (Ursula) Hruby of Austin, TX, and Bradley (Catrina) Hruby of Webster, SD, 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one brother Patrick Stoebner of Groton, SD.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, step son Rodney Hruby, two brother’s one sister.

GILBERT JOHN STEIGER

Funeral service for Gilbert John Steiger, 79, Aberdeen will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen. Pastor Deb Grismer will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Mound Cemetery at Leola, SD. Gilbert died on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital at Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 8:00am until the time of the service on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

Gilbert John Steiger, son of Jacob and Nettie (Maas) Steiger was born on October 23, 1931 in McPherson County, SD. He was raised and attended school in the Leola area. He lived with his parents and helped on the family farm until 1969. At this time he began living with his aunt and uncle for a short time. Gilbert made his home in Redfield for several years prior to settling in Aberdeen where he remained until the time of his death.

Gilbert will be dearly missed by his many friends and by those who knew him. He will be remembered for being a hard worker and for his outstanding dedication to his job. Gilbert had a great sense of humor and enjoyed bowling in his free time. He also enjoyed throwing darts and loved spending time outdoors.

Grateful for having shared Gilbert’s life are his foster mom Rena Hansen and his many friends at Aspire of Aberdeen.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Nettie Steiger.

A.E. “BUD” PIRNIE

Memorial service for A.E. “Bud” Pirnie, 92 of Bath, SD will be 2:00pm, Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen. Loren Siefken will officiate. Private inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Bud died Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

A. E. “Bud” Pirnie, son of Silas Huntington and Zorah Belle (Gaston) Pirnie was born on November 22, 1918 at Aberdeen. This is the area where he was raised and attended school.

Bud was united in marriage to Eunice M. Gabel on October 12, 1941 at Aberdeen. They made their home near Britton, SD where they farmed prior to moving to Bath. At this time Bud began working for NW Bell Telephone where he was employed for the next 35 years until his retirement.

Bud served on the Bath School Board and also sat on the Board of Trustees for the Bath United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and was very active in the Bath Junior Legion Baseball program.

In his free time Bud enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a proud supporter and greatly appreciated the youth baseball program in Bath. Not long ago the baseball field in Bath was proudly renamed “Pirnie Field”. Bud will be loved and missed by his family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Bud’s life are his wife Eunice, children, Jerry Pirnie, David Pirnie, Judith “Sam” McGinnis and Rick (Traci) Pirnie; 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents Silas and Zorah Pirnie and three brothers Ken, Willard and Willis Pirnie.

DARRELL “JOHNNY” JOHNSON

Funeral service for Darrell “Johnny” Johnson, 63, Aberdeen will be 2:00pm, Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen. Pastor Deb Grismer will officiate. Burial will be in the Warner Township Cemetery, Warner, SD. Darrell died on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Visitation will be from 1:00pm-7:00pm Friday, June 3, 2011 with family present from 5:00pm-7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

The family requests all funeral attendees wear casual attire in Johnny’s honor.

Darrell Leo Johnson, son of Gilbert and Bernice (Purdy) Johnson was born on April 21, 1948 at Aberdeen, SD. This is the area where he was raised and attended school. Johnny worked most of his life at Safeguard of Aberdeen, where he was also a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

Johnny was an avid bowler, a loyal Star Trek “Trekkie”, a lover of 4th of July celebrations, and a good conversation; especially conversations revolving around history. He enjoyed Ms. Pacman, listening to the oldies, women’s tennis, Law & Order, He-Man and Pepsi-Cola. He loved to cook and grill for friends and family.

Grateful for having shared Johnny’s life are Kerry Wendt, Aberdeen, four daughters, Kristi Johnson of Jordan, MN, Tammy (Mathew) Claeys of Hecla, SD, Carrie (Leroy) Golden of Danvers, MN, and Terri (John) Dahlquist of Burnsville, MN and seven grandchildren Tyler and Kayla Johnson, Shanelle and Cheyenne Claeys, Michael Edwards and Alexander and Isabelle Golden.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents Gilbert and Bernice Johnson, two brothers and one sister.

PAUL STANGE JR.

The funeral service for Paul Stange Jr., 81, Aberdeen, will be at 7:00pm Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial will be the following morning at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen with military honors by Sidney L. Smith Post #24. Paul died Monday, May 30, 2011 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital at Aberdeen.

Visitation will precede the service from 1-7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Paul Stange Jr. was born on January 14, 1930 to Paul and Gertrude (Kuehnert) Stange in rural Brown County. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. He enlisted in the United States Army in September of 1953. After serving two years he was honorably discharged.

Paul was united in marriage to Elsie Heitz on December 29, 1962 in Ipswich SD. Three children were added to this union. Paul farmed for many years, then worked at the elevator in Mina for eighteen years, followed by 10 years at Avera St. Lukes before his retirement.

Paul was known for his sense of humor and for always having a song in his heart; often found to be singing or whistling. He loved playing baseball, going dancing twice a week with Elsie, bowling, gardening, woodworking and spending time with his grandkids.

Grateful for having shared Paul’s life are his wife Elsie, daughter Cammy (Mike) Kuhl of Lead SD, son Gregory Paul (Cormetta) Stange of Hanover PA, and son Jerry (Lori) Stange of Gilbert AZ, sisters Virginia (Jim) Ligda of Portage IN, Rolande “Randy” Vik of Aberdeen, Ardelene Stange of Aberdeen, brother Donald (Dorothy) Stange of Littleton CO and brother Dale (Linda) Stange of Santan Valley AZ. Five grandchildren Mikayla, Connor, Riley, Skylar and Loralye, great grandson Trent, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Barbara Quill and two infant siblings.

MATHILDA “ TILLIE” M. ROHRBACH

Funeral service for Mathilda “Tillie” M. Rohrbach, 92, Aberdeen and formerly of Hosmer, SD will be 11:00am, Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church, 1732 South Main Street, Aberdeen. Pastor Marcia Sylvester will officiate. Burial will be Tuesday at 2:15pm in Bethany Cemetery at Hosmer. Mathilda died on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital at Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00pm, Monday, May 30, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Mathilda M. Mohr, daughter of Christian and Magdalena (Pietz) Mohr was born on March 13, 1919 on her parent’s farm northeast of Hosmer. She was baptized on Palm Sunday on April 13, 1919 and confirmed on June 12, 1932 both at Jehovah Lutheran Church northeast of Hosmer. Mathilda attended country school near her home. Following her schooling she remained at home and helped on the farm.

Mathilda was united in marriage to Arthur Rohrbach on September 11, 1938 at Jehovah Lutheran Church. For a short time the couple lived with Art’s parents prior to moving to a farm 15 miles northeast of Hosmer which they purchased in 1944. In May of 1967 they sold the farm to Arnold Schmidt and Milbert Mohr and moved into Hosmer after 29 years on the farm.

At this time Mathilda began working at the Hosmer Senior Citizens Home where she was employed for the next 27 years as a Certified Nurse’s Aide retiring in June of 1994. Her beloved husband Art died on October 27, 2004. Mathilda entered ManorCare in April of 2009 and remained in Aberdeen until her death.

Mathilda was a past member of St. John’s Lutheran Church at Hosmer. She also attended church at Jehovah Lutheran Church where she played the organ. In her free time Mathilda enjoyed doing crafts. She also spent countless hours crocheting, sewing and doing embroidery. Mathilda was an excellent cook and was well known for baking kuchen. Mathilda loved to play the organ and was also an avid bingo player. She was currently a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Mathilda’s life are her two daughters Angie (Leonard) Crowe of Glenwood, MN and Susan (Marvin) Entzel of Aberdeen; grandchildren Douglas Crowe, Nancy (Paul) Krieger, Michael (Debbie) Crowe, Bryan Entzel and Russell (Lauren Schroeder) Entzel; great grandchildren Brittni, Brent and Peyton Krieger and Zachary, Isaac and Paige Crowe and one sister Irene Schnaible.

Mathilda was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Rohrbach, parents Christian and Magdalena Mohr and one brother Milbert Mohr.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

EDNA WHITTLINGER

The funeral service for Edna “Bubbles” Whittlinger, 84, Aberdeen will be 2:00pm, Thursday, May 26, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Jennifer Turick will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Vistitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church. Edna died on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Manor Care Health Services of Aberdeen.

Edna Dorothy Brunmaier was born on April 15, 1927 to John and Anna (Oster) Brunmaier in Edmunds County, SD. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. In 1953 she married Donald Whittlinger. Two sons, Terry and Toby, were added to this union.

Edna was an avid member of First Presbyterian Church of Aberdeen for more than fifty years, where she also taught Sunday school. She worked at the Kozy Korner in Aberdeen. Edna was known to go by the nickname “Bubbles”. Edna enjoyed singing, dancing, playing bingo, watching Nascar, and gathering with “Friends” at the Podoll Center, and especially time spent with her grandkids.

Grateful for having shared Edna’s life are her son Toby (Tracy) Whittlinger of Aberdeen, brother Lawrence Brunmaier, sister Alma Steinhauer, and grandsons Terry, Torey and Ty Whittlinger, along with nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her son Terry, parents, eight sisters and one brother.

GLORENA L. SCHNABEL

The service for Glorena L. Schnabel, 85, Aberdeen, is 2:00pm, Friday, May 27, 2011 at First Reformed Church, Pastor David Dawn officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Glorena died Monday, May 23, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be 1-7pm, Thursday, May 26 with family present from 5-7 and a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Glorena Loretta Wiederich was born on July 26, 1925 at Hosmer, SD to John G. and Annetta E. (Schnabel) Wiederich. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. She was caretaker for her grandmother.

On January 20, 1946 she married Royal Schnabel at Hosmer, SD. They made their home on a farm near Hosmer until 1960 when they moved to Aberdeen. They owned Dan’s Café until 1971 and in 1972 she went to work for Northern State College until she retired in 1987. They continued to make Aberdeen their home.

Glorena was member of the First Reformed Church in Aberdeen. She was a member of the Aberdeen Senior Center. She loved cross stitching, quilting, gardening, flowers and was an excellent cook. Glorena’s children and grandchildren were the joy of her life.

Grateful for having shared Glorena’s life are her husband, Royal Schnabel, Aberdeen, children: Gene (Wanda) Schnabel, Longmont, CO; Dennis (Cheryl) Schnabel, Seattle, WA; JoAnn (Wayne) Sheldon, Brandon, SD; Jack (Laurel) Schnabel, Chanhassen, MN; grandchildren: Nate (Sarah) Schnabel, Kristin Schnabel (Ryan Mayhew), Sasha (Scott) Mail, Aaron (Alisha) Schnabel, Teresa Sheldon, Katie (Kelly) Meeker, Ryan Schnabel, Allison Schnabel; great grandchildren: Sofia, Stella, Naftali, Yehuda, Zoe, Thijs and Olivia, sister, Gardella Voeller, Aberdeen and brother-in-law, Gordon Rath, Leola.

Glorena is preceded in death by her parents, John and Annetta Wiederich, brother, Herbert Wiederich and sister, Delores Rath.

LAILA BRADKE

Funeral service for Laila Helen Bradke, 86 of Northville, SD and formerly of Frederick, SD will be 2:00pm, Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Northwestern United Methodist Church at Mellette, SD. Pastor Jon Damaska will officiate. Burial will be in Savo Cemetery at a later date with graveside services officiated by Pastor Galen Sylvester. Laila died on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1:00-7:00pm Wednesday, May 25, 2011 with a prayer service at 7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Laila Helen Youley, daughter of Frank and Eugenia (Poykko) Youley was born on October 22, 1924 in Guelph, Dickey County, North Dakota. This is the area where she was raised and attended school.

Laila was united in marriage to Gustav Bradke on March 18, 1945 in Hecla, SD. They farmed near Guelph for a short time prior to making their home on a farm northeast of Frederick, SD in Savo Township. For many years this is where they made their home. Laila enjoyed working on the farm, especially raising chickens and having a large vegetable garden. Her husband died on February 11, 1983. At this time Laila began making her home in Northville.

Laila was a member of Savo Lutheran Church and was also active in the ladies church circle of rural, Frederick. She attended Northville United Methodist Church after moving to Northville until it burned down in 1992. Laila then attended the Northwestern United Methodist Church in Mellette where she was a member of the United Methodist Ladies Group. She was also a member of the Spink County Senior Citizens Group.

Grateful for having shared Laila’s life are her daughter Donna (Lyle) Peterson, two grandchildren, James (Melissa) Peterson and Diane (David) Watson and four great grandchildren, Austin Peterson, Darien Watson, Danielle Jo Watson and Kyle Peterson all of Northville.

Laila was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two half brothers, Edward and Everett Koivu, two brothers, Leroy and Frank Donald Youley and three sisters, Esther Youley in infancy, Martha Doty and Verna Erhart. .

FRAN E. CUTLER

The celebration of life for Fran Cutler, 72, Aberdeen will be 11:00am, Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at First United Methodist Church. Burial at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen. Fran died on Saturday, May 21 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be Monday, May 23, from 1:00-7:00pm with family present from 5:00-7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Frances Edna Howarth was born on May 27, 1938 to Frank L. Howarth and Hazel (Potter) Howarth of Aberdeen. She graduated from Aberdeen Central in 1956 where she participated in All State Orchestra, playing the French horn. After high school she received an Early Childhood Education certificate from Northern State University.

Fran married Gary Cutler on August 3, 1958 at First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, SD. Fran worked as a first grade teacher for three years in Selby, SD and then followed her husband’s career in South Dakota and Iowa.

Wherever she lived, Fran was active in church and was also a volunteer with Hospice and at local nursing homes, where Fran and her dog Charlie brightened the day of Alzheimer’s patients. Fran volunteered at the Auxiliary House, was a Stephen’s Minister, and was very active in the United Methodist Women.

Fran was a gracious host and enjoyed entertaining in her home, especially themed dinner parties. She was known and loved for her quick wit and servant’s heart. Fran had a passion for cooking and was often creating interesting food combinations. Fran also enjoyed collecting angels, bird plates and statues, as well as being artistic with the painting of ceramics.

Fran was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Hazel, and her sister Joan.

Thankful for having shared in her life are her husband Gary, two sons Greg (Denise) Cutler of Rapid River, MI; Tanner (Liz) Cutler of Cedar Rapids, IA, and one daughter Elizabeth (Tim) Heath of Pierre SD, brother Tom Howarth, eleven grandchildren, and “favorite child” dog Georgie.

Memorials can be directed to: First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen or Palliative Care.
