Helen Johnson

SALEM -- Helen A. Johnson, age 71 of Salem, died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at the Beverly Healthcare Center, Salem.

Helen A. Lee, daughter of Praben and Dagmar (Hansen) Lee was born September 30, 1932, in Turner County, SD. She grew up in Yankton County and graduated from Viborg High School. She attended Southern State Teachers College and taught school for many years in Turner and Yankton Counties.

On January 30, 1954, she married Norman Johnson at Meldahl, rural Irene. They farmed near Viborg until 1970 when they moved to Salem. Her husband died in 1984. She continued to live in Salem after her husband's death and was a child care provider until ill health forced her to quit.

She was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church at Center, served on the church council, and was an officer in the women's organization.

Survivors include: four sons, Ryan (Shelly), Mesa, AZ, Bjorn (Kathy), Canton, Talis (Laura), Sioux Falls, and Thor, Canton; two daughters, Myrisa Kindle (Rod) and Jizele Pottratz (Todd), all of Sioux Falls; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Roland (Elaine) Lee, Freeman and Robert (Marianne) Lee, Viborg.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 20, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. in the Salem Lutheran Church, rural Salem. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Thursday in the Kinzley Funeral Home, Salem. There will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

Arlene Hahn

Arlene Hahn died on Friday, August 13, 2004, at Avera St. Benedict Health Center in Parkston, South Dakota.

Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 19, 2004, at Emmaus Lutheran Church, Tripp, South Dakota. Clergy is Rev. L. Scott Spiehs. Organist is Karen Conrad, and soloist is Christopher Hahn. Interment is in Gracehill Cemetery, Tripp, South Dakota.

Casketbearers are Duane Bueber, Chris Gall, Richard Gall, Bob Just, Brian Mogck and Russell Negebauer. Honorary casketbearers are Stacy Kern and the staff of the Tripp Good Samaritan Center.

Visitation is from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 18, 2004, at the Goglin-Kelley Memorial Chapel, Tripp, South Dakota.

Arlene Erna Hahn was born on October 18, 1930, at Delmont, South Dakota, to Emil and Melita (Hirsch) Lippert. She was baptized on May 2, 1943, at Parkston Baptist Church. Arlene attended Freier District #88 School in rural Delmont through the 8th grade. On December 19, 1950, she married Eldon V. Hahn at the Tripp Baptist Church. Following her marriage, Arlene became a very active member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Tripp, teaching Sunday School and serving on various church committees. For several years, Arlene was employed in the laundry at the Tripp Good Samaritan Center. She enjoyed ceramics, gardening and traveling.

Grateful for having shared Arlene's life are her husband, Eldon Hahn of Tripp; four children: Larry (Pam) Hahn of Elizabeth, Colorado; Delilah Hahn of Scotland, South Dakota; Lennis (Kathleen) Hahn of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Kelly Hahn (and special friend, Amy VanVoorst) of Sioux City, Iowa; six grandchildren: Jennifer Hahn, Christopher Hahn, Joshua (Emily) Hahn, Kalley (Mike) Fox, Austin Hahn, and Derek Hahn; two brothers: Arnold (Delores) Lippert of Mitchell, South Dakota; and Elmer (Gloria) Lippert of Mesa, Arizona; one aunt, Martha Hirsch of Tripp; one uncle, Arthur Hirsch of Yankton, South Dakota; and four nieces and six nephews.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: Alvin Lippert and Ervin Lippert.

Arthur Handel Sr.

SCOTLAND -- Arthur Handel, Sr. died on Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at the Scotland Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 20, 2004, at United Church of Christ, Scotland, South Dakota. Clergy is Pastor Del Neumeister. Organist is Shirley Orth, and a duet is by Brenda Handel Johnson and Annaeka Johnson.

Casketbearers are John Russell, Kay MacClure, Susan Sedlacek, Joan Wilka, Brenda Handel Johnson and Thea Dalvand.

Interment is in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, South Dakota

Goglin-Kelley Funeral Home, Scotland, is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Emanuel Handel, Sr. was born on February 22, 1906, at Menno, South Dakota, the oldest of Christian and Katharina (Mettler) Handel's five children. He was baptized by Rev. Bodemann in 1906 and confirmed by Rev. Ritterzhaus in 1920 at Frieden's Church in Menno. He attended Castle Township Country School near Menno through the 8th grade. From 1922 through 1924, he studied mechanics, plumbing and electrical at the technical school in Tripp, South Dakota. Arthur had excellent mechanical skills and could tear apart and rebuild any car or tractor engine. He married Viola Herrboldt on March 2, 1930 in Menno. They were married 51 years until her death on November 28, 1981. They farmed 2 1/4 miles north of Scotland, South Dakota, and Arthur raised registered Hereford cattle. He was a lifelong farmer, from 1930 until 1985, and still fed cattle in 1996 at 90 years old. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Scotland and served on the church council. Arthur was a longtime member of the American Hereford Association and the South Dakota Hereford Association, of which he was past president. He was married to Tracy Blume from 1984 until 1994. Arthur entered the Scotland Good Samaritan Center on September 3, 1997, and was an active participant in the many activities there.

Arthur's memory will be cherished by his son, Arthur (Patricia) Handel, Jr. of Rapid City, South Dakota; seven grandchildren: John Russell, Kay MacClure, Susan Sedlacek, Joan Wilka, Brenda Handel Johnson, Thea Dalvand and Lisa Dalvand; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and son-in-law, Dale Russell.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Viola (Herrboldt) Handel in 1981; his daughter, Arleen Vesta Russell; his parents, Christian and Katharina (Mettler) Handel; two brothers, Ervin and Ruben; and two sisters, Elsie and Esther.

Alice M. Meyer

Alice M. Meyer, 66, of Hartington died Friday (Aug. 20, 2004) at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton. Funeral services are pending, Wintz Funeral Home of Hartington is in charge of arrangements.

Marie Thompson

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Marie Alice Thompson, 92, of Dubuque, Iowa, died Thursday, August 5, 2004, at Manor Care Health Service, Dubuque.

Memorial services will be at 7:00 p.m. Monday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, Dubuque, with Father Daniel Knepper officiating. Burial will be in Yankton Cemetery, Yankton, S.D.

Marie was born February 16, 1912, in Crofton, Nebraska, to Lewis and Francis (Lachmann) Scroggin. She married Floyd Thompson February 12, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated from South Dakota School of Hairstyling in 1958 and was self-employed as a cosmetologist. Her husband died April 29, 1995.

She was an avid reader, homemaker, fisherwoman, card player and proficient in all types of fabric design.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda (Charles) Fiegen, Dubuque; a daughter-in-law, Mary Thompson, Sun City, California; a brother-in-law: Earl Palmer, Rapid City, South Dakota; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Blanche Ekern, Yankton, South Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Ronald "Tom" Thompson; one daughter, Anita Palmer; sisters: Florence Brent, Pearl Seymour, Della Schelberg and Virginia "Dot" Peterson; and brothers Elmer "Butch" Baysinger and Ray Scroggin.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or the Carnegie Stout Library.

Martha Johnson

Martha Johnson, age 86, of Yankton, died Thursday, August 12, 2004, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

A funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2004, at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton, with the Reverend Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial will be at the Yankton Cemetery.

Visitation is from 12:00 p.m. until service time on Monday, at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton.

Pallbearers are Lucas Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Michael Johnson, Corey Johnson, Jesse Johnson, and Ellie Leith.

Martha was born February 15, 1918, at New Haven, Connecticut, to Elmer and Harriet (Erwin) Kinney. She grew up in Clinton, Connecticut, and graduated from Morgan High School in 1936. In 1940, she received her nursing degree from St. Luke's Hospital in New York and then received additional training in public health nursing at Simmons College in Boston in 1941. She worked as a nurse in New York City for two years. On March 2, 1943, she married Robert B. Johnson in Manhattan, Kansas. After their marriage, they lived in several states throughout the country before moving to Yankton in September of 1956. She was an active member of the United Church of Christ and was very involved with the quilter's group and the layette committee, organizing rummage sales, and helping with soup kitchens. She was an avid geologist and a long-term member of the Daniel Newcomb Chapter of the Daughter's of the American Revolution.

Survivors include three sons and their spouses: David and Linda Johnson of Pueblo, Colorado; Pete and Janet Johnson of Yankton; and Edwin and Michelle Johnson of Wakonda; one daughter and her husband, Sarah and Rodger Johnson of Falls City, Nebraska; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on September 13, 1994; three brothers; and one sister.

James D. Foss

James D. Foss, age 75, of Yankton, passed away Friday, August 20, 2004, at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion, NE, with Rev. Frank Baumert officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in St. John's Cemetery in Petersburg, NE with military graveside rites by the Albion VFW Post #736 and Albion American Legion Post #162.

A prayer service will be at 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 23, 2004, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion, NE. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Honorary pallbearers will be all of his grandchildren: Jacqueline Cummins, Jason Foss, Shantell Kleinschmit, Melissa Jarecki, Michael Foss, Jr., Andrew Foss, Megan Foss, Nicholas Marvin, Nathan Marvin, Caitlin Marvin and Oren Salzberg.

Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jim was born on September 5, 1928, to Paul and Frances (Leifeld) Foss in Northville, Michigan. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 serving in occupied Japan, honorably discharged in 1948 then recalled for the Korean Conflict and discharged again in 1951. He married Shirley Martin on September 18, 1950, in Petersburg, NE. Jim was employed by Consumers Public Power District and Loup Public Power in Albion, NE, from 1949 till his retirement in 1990. Jim also owned and operated Foss Tree Service for many years. Jim was very active in the Albion community serving as past president of Albion Chamber of Commerce voted "Albion's Boss of the Year Award," past president of St. Michael's Catholic Church Parish Council, member of the Knights of Columbus, lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. Jim was well known for his love for a good joke, fishing, gardening and his well-documented cooking skills. He will be loved and truly missed by all who knew him.

Those who will cherish his memory are his wife, Shirley of Yankton, SD; two sons and their spouses: Pat and Jolene of Yankton, SD, and Mike and Marika of Seattle, WA; two daughters and their spouses: Paula and Rich Foster of Norfolk, NE, and Colleen and Dan Marvin of Bloomfield, NE; two brothers: Paul Foss of St. Helena, NE, and Dick Foss of Petersburg, NE; and two sisters: Marie Powers of Omaha, NE, and Francis Hansen of St. Paul, MN; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Anna Thiem.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Albion Volunteer Fire and Rescue Unit, P.O. Box 227, Albion, NE 68620 or the family.

Mildred Breeding

Mildred "Millie" (Carter) Breeding, age 76, of Olivet died peacefully on Thursday, August 19, 2004 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at Olivet United Methodist Church, Olivet, with Rev. Mary-Lee Lint officiating.

Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the church. A reception will be held following the service at the church.

Mildred was born on May 4, 1928, in Cold Springs, Oklahoma, to Jeff and Dolly (Duty) Carter. After high school, she moved to California where she met and married Bernard Breeding. They were married on June 4, 1955, at Sonora, California. They lived in California, Montana, and Wyoming. In 2002, they moved to Olivet, SD.

She is mourned by her husband, Bernard, Olivet, SD; her sons; Charles (Judy) Breeding, California; Mike Carter, Montana; Terry (Terry) Breeding, Olivet, SD; one daughter, Debby (Kirk) Towns, Olivet, SD; one sister, Alice Pierce, California; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild, and many relatives and friends.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers.

Mildred will be missed by her family, who is very grateful to her neighbors, friends and caregivers.

Richard E. Auch

Richard E. Auch, age 85 of Menno passed away Friday, August 20, 2004, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at the Zion Reformed Church in Menno, SD, with Rev. Hans Kalkman officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery with military graveside rites by Rames-Bender American Legion Post #152, Menno.

Visitations will be from 1-9 p.m. Monday, August 23, 2004, at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno, with the family present from 7-9 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Roger Auch, Duane Auch, Daniel Auch, Douglas Auch, Glenn Lang and Ray Woehl.

Richard Auch was born July 27, 1919, to Emanuel and Salamina (Schoppert) Auch. He was baptized at Johannestal Reformed Church by Rev. Buettel and confirmed June 24, 1934 by Rev. William Hueneman. Richard was a lifelong member of Zion Reformed Church and served as an elder, deacon, trustee and Sunday school teacher for many years. Richard served in the U.S. Army World War II under General Patton from June 1942-February 1946. He served in three major overseas battles and received the European Theatre Medal and the Bronze Star. On October 12, 1944, Richard was united in marriage to Adella Oswald at Zion Evangelical Church southeast of Menno by Rev. Lyle Krueger. After being discharged from the Army, they made their home northwest of Menno where he farmed his entire life. They moved to Menno in 1985 and continued helping on the farm. Richard always enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He was especially proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Adella of Menno, SD; one son, Terry, and his wife Marion of Menno, SD; two grandchildren, Kevin Auch and his wife Brenda of Freeman, SD, and Kristi and her husband Corey Stahl of Freeman, SD; three great-grandchildren: Kaylee and Paige Auch and Brandon Stahl; four brothers: Arnold Auch and his wife Betty of Sioux Falls, SD; Eugene Auch and his wife Luella of Menno, SD; Robert Auch and his wife Alvina of Lesterville, SD; and Edwin Auch and his wife Shirley of Menno, SD; two sisters, Ruth Lang of Menno, SD and Esther Jantzen of Tipton, KS; and one sister-in-law, Alitha Peterson of Yankton, SD.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, Ervin and Harold and one sister Ella.
