PHYLLIS ANNE REED

The funeral service for Phyllis Reed, 81, Aberdeen will be 11:30am, Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Pastor James Seeber and Pastor Mike Jacobson officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery. Phyllis died Sunday, October 9, 2011 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen after a long battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Tuesday October 11, with family present from 6-7. A prayer service will follow at 7 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Phyllis Anne Reed was born on June 26th, 1930, to Philip and Fannie (Bird) Jones on a farm south of Frankfort, SD. After graduating from Frankfort schools, she attended Wayne State Teacher’s College, and Northern State Teacher’s College. Phyllis then taught school at Cromwell School near Hitchcock. On July 20th, 1950, she married Kenneth Reed in Redfield.

After marriage, Kenneth and Phyllis resided in Redfield, Aberdeen, Newell, and Ree Heights. In 1965 Kenneth accepted a position to manage Moreau Grand Electric in Timber Lake, where they resided until 1988, when they retired in Aberdeen. During their time in Timber Lake, Phyllis held various jobs including Deputy Treasurer for Dewey County, waitressed at Alf’s Café, and also worked at the Dewey County Bank. In 1982, Phyllis and her family built the cable TV system in Timber Lake.

Phyllis was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Rebecca’s, and the Aberdeen Area Genealogical Society. Phyllis enjoyed researching and compiling her family’s genealogy. She also enjoyed playing cards and socializing with the residents in her apartment building.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her siblings Don, Glenn, Ima Bicknese, Ruby Avery, Harry, Marion Robertson, Vivian, Ione, and Bird.

Grateful for having shared Phyllis’ life are her six children; William (Patricia), Aberdeen, Richard (Subby), Wall, David “Roger”(Marcia Nemmers), Sioux Falls, Steven (Debra), Murdo, Michelle (Dean) Vilhauer, Aberdeen, and Charlene (Tom) Hager, Aberdeen; Eighteen grandchildren; Michael Reed, Jason Reed, Kristopher Reed (Mandy), Savannah Reed (Forrest Berg), Alexandra Reed. Morriah Reed, Jana Reed, Ryen (Kristin Gunderson) Reed, Konrad “Lucas” (Danielle) Reed, Sarah (Josh) Fischer, Kaitlin Reed, Whitney (Chris Peterson) Reed, Wendy Plummer, Jared (Lezlie) Vilhauer, Amy (Austin) Hoiland, and Leah (CJ Lane) Vilhauer, Cole Hager, and Cade Hager. Great Grandchildren; Gavin, Jayden, Emery, Lexi, Tyler, Christopher, Kaylee, Emily, McKayla, McKenzie, Stefanie, Shayla, brother, Daryl “Dutch” (Delila), Sister-in-law Dolores Jones, and her lifelong friend Marian West.

LYDIA JAHRAUS

Funeral services for Lydia Jahraus, 101, Aberdeen will be 2 pm, Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Lydia died Saturday, October 8 at Manor Care Health Services.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Monday with family present from 5-7 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Lydia Ehrmann was born on October 9, 1909 near Artas, SD to Jacob and Katharina (Kuebler) Ehrmann. She grew up and attended school in Zeeland, ND. On November 13, 1931 she married Arthur Jahraus in Campbell County, SD. Lydia was an accomplished seamstress, subsidizing the family income during the depression by reconstructing old coats and dresses into childrens coats and dresses. The price was fifteen cents for dresses and twenty-five cents for coats.

They moved to Aberdeen in 1944. Lydia cleaned houses. She was a very hard worker. Family was very important to her and she had a very good memory of family. She was the family historian and loved family visits. She worried about each and everyone of them.

Lydia was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She loved crocheting, making quilts, canning, making jelly and baking. She made the best molasses cookies and kuchen. She was a dedicated person of God. She will be greatly missed by all her family.

Grateful for having shared Lydia’s life are her children, Betty Vasser, Aberdeen,Loretta (Louie) Koch, Aberdeen, Billy (Sue) Jahraus, Byron, MN, ten grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren and four sisters.

Lydia is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Jahraus, parents, Jacob and Katharina Ehrmann, son, Wayne Jahraus, grandchildren, Meddy, Jenny, Dorald and Lori, great grandchildren, Stuart and Kevin, five brothers and five sisters.

ROY E. KELSEY

The memorial service for Roy E. Kelsey, 81, Aberdeen is 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 10, 2011, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24. Roy died Thursday, October 6, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Arrangements by Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street.

Roy Edward Kelsey was born on March 7, 1930, to Harry and Rose (Kotval) Kelsey at Aberdeen, SD. He grew up and attended school in Aberdeen, graduating from Central High School in 1948. Roy entered the U.S. Air Force after high school and served his country for four years. On November 23, 1951, Roy married Ramona “Rae” Hamilton at Aberdeen, while he was on leave from the Air Force. They made their home at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, FL, and this is where their first daughter, Karen, was born. They returned to Aberdeen in the fall of 1952. After the death of his father in 1954, Roy took over Kelsey Welding, the shop his father had founded. During this time, Roy and Rae celebrated the birth of their second daughter, Kerma. Rae worked with him in the family business and he would allow his children and grandchildren to “help” him in the shop. In 1983, they sold the business, retired and enjoyed life with family and friends. Ramona died on October 22, 2008.

Roy was a member of First Baptist Church of Aberdeen. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Sunrise Lodge No. 211. He was an avid reader. Roy was a hard worker both at his business and at home. They moved several times and Roy would often do major remodeling projects in the new homes. Along with being very talented in wrought iron design, metal fabrication and machine work, he was also skilled at woodworking. Roy was a devoted husband and father. His family will miss his gentle words and warm smile.

KAY A. CLIFFORD

Kay Clifford, 66, rural Frederick, SD, was called home unexpectedly on Monday, October 3, 2011 at her residence.

Her funeral service will be 10:30 am Thursday, October 6, 2011 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 214 SW 7th Ave., Aberdeen, SD, with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial will be at 2pm at Richland Cemetery rural Mina, SD

Visitation will be 1pm to 7pm Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

Kay Annette Cunningham was born February 4, 1945, at Mina, SD to Floyd and Viola (Ulmer) Cunningham. She began her schooling in rural Mina and graduated from Warner High School. She attended the National College of Business in Rapid City, SD and received her diploma in Senior Business Administration.

She married Archie Sydnie Clifford in Rapid City, SD on October 23, 1965. They briefly relocated to Phoenix, Arizona in May of 1966 to November 1970 while Archie was enlisted in the Air Force. They returned to South Dakota and decided on locating in Aberdeen, SD. Other residences included Westport, Martin, and rural Frederick all of SD.

Kay worked various places throughout her lifetime including positions with South Dakota Stock Growers, Hospital Administration, Aberdeen National Bank, Stay at home Super 'Mom', The Shed, Midstates Printing, 3M, and concluded at the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired where she was the Food Service Supervisor.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed life to its fullest, especially gardening, flowers, the birds that visited her bird feeders, following the activities of her kids and grandchildren, cooking, baking and grilling, and being an avid Green Bay Packer fan.

Grateful for having shared Kay’s life are her husband of 20 days short of 46 years, Archie Clifford, three children, Rick (Ardis) Clifford, Westport, Tammy (Bill) Dennert, Box Elder, and Archie 'A.J.' Clifford Jr., rural Frederick; six grandchildren, Cody Clark, Aberdeen, Tasha (Beltran) Barrera, Groton, Rikki Clifford, Aberdeen, Kayla Clifford, Westport, Josh Dennert, Aberdeen, and Casey Dennert, rural Frederick; and two great grandchildren and with another great grandchild due October 6, 2011.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

ALMA R. WAGENMANN

The funeral service for Alma R. Wagenmann, 93, Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00 p.m., October 8, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Marcia Sylvester officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Alma died Tuesday, October 4, at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Friday, October 7, with family present from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alma Rosina Burrer was born February 17, 1918 to Christ and Rosina (Hagle) Burrer in McPherson County, near Eureka, SD. She grew up on the farm and attended country school near Eureka. Alma was married to Reinhold Wagenmann at Leola, SD on November 20, 1938. They made their home 14 miles NW of Leola. Alma and Reinhold lived on the farm until 1952 when they moved into Aberdeen. In 1953, Alma began working at various places until 1967, when she went to work for the Holiday Inn in Aberdeen, where she was a dishwasher.

Alma was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was on the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Moose Lodge. Alma enjoyed canning, baking and cooking and was known for her German dishes. She loved playing Bingo, dominos and card games. Watching car races was a favorite pastime of hers. Alma was a talented embroiderer. She was active at the Aberdeen Area Senior Citizens Center and volunteered there for many years.

VIOLA “VI” HERMAN

Funeral services for Viola "Vi" Herman, 80, Aberdeen will be 10 am, Tuesday, October 11 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Vi passed away on Friday, September 2 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital following a long courageous struggle with breast cancer.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Monday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with family present from 5-7.

Viola Lorraine "Snooks" was born to Louis Frank Smith and Millian Mary (Markuson) Smith on July 19, 1931 at St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen, SD. Viola grew up on her family's farm just outside of Mansfield, SD. The farm included exotic animals--buffalo, elk, peacocks, and swans along with the regular--cows, pigs and chickens all of which gave her great joy. Growing up, Snookie helped her family with household chores as her family took in boarders related to thrashing crews, hunters, local workers, etc. She graduated from Northville High School in 1949. After high school, she immediately began nurses' training at Presentation School of Nursing - St Luke's. She graduated with her nursing degree in 1952 as a RN. On July 20,1952 Viola was united in marriage with Milo L. Herman. They made their home in Aberdeen where Vi worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Luke's Hospital and later for Dr. Paul Bunker. She continued in Ear, Nose and Throat medicine with Dr. Thomas Bunker and Dr. Winston Odland. After 40 dedicated years of nursing, she retired in 1993 so that she and her husband could travel south in the winters with their friends. When they were not being snowbirds, she volunteered her time at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Dakota Prairie Museum. Whether known as Viola, Vi, Snooks or Snookie she enjoyed talking to friends, playing bridge, and cheering on the Minnesota Twins. Viola was also known for her green thumb and had an array of orchids, Christmas cactus, African violets and other plants. Viola loved animals specifically pigs, a squirrel she named Buddy & a granddog Charlie however her grandchildren were her true joy & love. She will be missed dearly by her family and many good friends.

Viola is survived by her daughters: Karen (Douglas) Locken of Madison, WI; and Nancy (Steven) Hermansen of Aberdeen; seven grandchildren: Abby, Kelsey and Sarah (Locken) and Stevie, Taylor, Casey and Harley (Hermansen). She was preceded in death by her husband, Milo; granddaughter, Emily Locken; her parents and two sisters.

The family is grateful to all who helped Vi in the past few months--especially the pastoral staff of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the staff of 3rd Medical and ICU at St. Luke's Hospital, Dr. Conklin, Chris Nelson and staff, and the palliative care staff--Kathy Gubin and Barbara Suurmeyer. We are also grateful to all of her friends who have visited and prayed for her. Your care meant so much to us all.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Dakota Prairie Museum, or Breast Cancer Research

DEBORAH LYNN BECK

The funeral service for Deborah Lynn Beck, 57, of Aberdeen will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Pastor Jeff Whillock will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park. Deborah died on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, September 30, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Deborah Lynn Flagtvedt, daughter of Sigval and Gladys (Tople) Flagtvedt was born on September 21, 1954 in Britton, SD. She lived on a farm for one year near Langford, SD prior to moving to Aberdeen with her family. This is where she was raised and attended school, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School in 1972. Deb went on to attend Presentation College for a short time.

Deb was united in marriage to Richard Beck on May 3, 1975 in Aberdeen. They made their home in Aberdeen where she worked and raised her family. For many years she worked as a waitress at various Aberdeen restaurants including the Virginia Café and Helen’s California Kitchen and several others. Deb later went to work at Aman Collection where she was known by the alias Lynner. She was currently working at Royale Casino.

Deb will be remembered for her great sense of humor and her many one liners. She was very outgoing and had the gift to gab. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. Deb will continue to bring joy to many people’s lives as she was an organ and tissue donor.

Grateful for having shared Deborah’s life are her husband Richard Beck of Aberdeen; daughters Stacy and Sara Beck both of Aberdeen; grandchildren Madalynn, Molly, Mara, Macy, Owen and Oliver; brothers Toot (Joy) Flagtvedt and Larry (Diane) Flagtvedt; sisters MaryAnn (John) Luoma, Shirley (George) Kramer and Sandra (Mike) Walker, mother-in-law Bernice Beck and many nieces and nephews.

Deborah was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Donald, Kermit and Johnny, one sister Diane, father-in-law Reuben and grandson Reuben.

LORETTA HOON

Mass of Christian Burial for Loretta Hoon, 75, Aberdeen will be 1:30 pm, Saturday, October 1, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Jordan Samson celebrant. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Loretta died Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at her home.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Friday with a wake service at 7 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Loretta Vetter was born on March 23, 1936 at Linton, ND to Ole and Clara (Noel) Vetter. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. On October 24, 1955 she married Peter Hoon at Linton, ND. They made their home on a farm near Linton until 1961 when they moved to Aberdeen. She worked at Control Data until it closed. Later she worked for the Aberdeen Meals on Wheels where she was working at the time of her death. Peter died on December 29, 2003 at Aberdeen, SD.

Loretta was a member of Sacred Hearth Catholic Church, Aberdeen. She enjoyed quilting and sewing, playing cards, gambling and dancing. She was an excellent baker and cook. She enjoyed watching “Days Of Our Lives”. She really loved her children and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Loretta’s life are her children: Sandi (Stan) Shifflett, Elaine (Tim) Hammrich, Tim (Mary) Hoon, Gene (Sharon) Hoon, Russ (Kirstie) Hoon, Gary Hoon, Randy (Becky) Hoon, and Shelly Hoon, grandchildren: Joey (Brittany) and Jonathan (Courtney), Scott and Tara, and Tanya (Rhyan), Nick, Brandon and Aaron, Travis, Zach, Shaun and Alex, Logan and Cameron, Alec and Chyanne, great grandchildren, Breyan, Jaidyn, Eli, Lilly and Luke, Siblings: Nona Vetter, Clemmy Kehoe, Shirley Vetter, Larry (Sandi) Vetter, and Linda Hill.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Peter Hoon, and her parents, Ole and Clara Vetter.

SR. ADRIENNE DORN

Sister Adrienne Dorn, 98, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died September 26, 2011 at Mother Joseph Manor.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Adrienne will be Friday, September 30, at

11:00 a.m., in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD. A Scriptural Wake Service will be Thursday, September 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m.

Father Joseph Sheehan will be celebrant and homilist.

Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S Main Street, in charge of arrangements.

Loretta Margaret was born May 29, 1913 in Adrian, MN to Catherine (Keller) and Joseph Dorn. She received her early education at St. Adrian’s School, Adrian, MN. She entered Presentation Convent September 1, 1939 and made her first profession of vows on May 1, 1941.

She served many years (1940-60) in food service at St. Joseph Hospital in Mitchell, SD; one year in Dell Rapids and two years at the House of Studies in Milwaukee, WI, at Presentation Convent from 1962-1972 and from 1972-1980 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Sister returned to the Motherhouse in food service from 1980-1987, followed by volunteer food service and sacristan at St. Lukes’s 1987-1993. She retired to the Motherhouse in 1993 and moved to Mother Joseph Manor in 2010. She enjoyed crocheting, making rosaries and a variety of other crafts.

Sister Adrienne is survived by her community family of Presentation Sisters: one sister, Helen Dorn Loosbrock and one brother, Raymond Dorn, Adrian, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents Catherine and Joseph, two sisters: Anna Herrig and Sister David Dorn, PBVM and four brothers: Edwin, Peter, Laurence and Wilfred Dorn.

Members of the Aberdeen Knights of Columbus will serve as casket bearers.
