SALLY EVENS WEBB

The memorial service for Sally Evens Webb, 64, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 29, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Jennifer Turick officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen, SD. Sally died Saturday, September 24, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m., Wednesday, September 28, with family present from 5-7 p.m., at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Sally Jane Evens was born May 13, 1947 to John and Myrel (Stenson) Evens at St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen. Sally attended school in Aberdeen and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1965. She went on to receive her B.S. Degree in Education from Northern State College (NSU) in 1970.

Sally married Robert D. Webb June 18, 1969 in Aberdeen. They had 42 wonderful years together and had a son, Vincent and a daughter, Katherine. Sally loved Girl Scouting and completed all levels, attaining highest honors. She was Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, a Girl Scout Leader for 11 years, Council member, and Life Member of Girl Scouts.

Sally was a member of Job’s Daughters and served as a Council member of Bethel #3. Sally was a diabetic from age nine and she and Tami Hayes started the local area Diabetes Club. She was a member of the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Association. Church was an important part of Sally’s life. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church and sang in the church choir. She held office in all of the organizations she belonged to including Chapter B, P.E.O., Monday Musical and Monday Musical Chorus. She was also active in Clio Circle, Presbyterian Women, Yelduz Women’s Hospital Auxiliary, AAUW Child Study Group and the Aberdeen Area Humane Society. After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Sally was a supporting member of the National Parkinson’s Foundation.

Sally enjoyed the time their family would spend at Pickerel Lake. She enjoyed travelling and was able to take many trips with Robert. Sally loved to spend time with family and friends but her greatest joy came from her children and grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Sally’s life are her husband Robert D. Webb, Aberdeen, her son Vincent Evens (Gita) Webb, Aberdeen, her daughter Katherine (Gail Skalsky) Webb, Beulah, ND, grandson Alexander Webb, granddaughter Cassandra Webb, two sisters, Susan Burgard, Pierre, SD and Diane (Don) Barnhart, San Antonio, TX, one nephew Robin A. (Sandy) Burgard, one niece Wendy (Blane) Bergan, two great nephews, Cameron Burgard and Benjamin Clarke, and one great niece Brooke Bergan, all of Sioux Falls, SD.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents, John and Myrel Evens, and one infant son, Stephen Wyman Webb.

WILLIAM “BILL” FRY

The memorial service for William “Bill” Fry, 86, Lisbon, ND and formerly Aberdeen will be 11:00 am Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Sptizer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Inurnment will be at Riverside Memorial Park with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Bill died Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the Veteran’s Home, Lisbon.

William “Bill” Francis Fry was born March 9, 1925 to William and Lillian (Nanny) Fry in Aberdeen, SD. He was baptized and attended school in the Aberdeen area. He was a brother to four, sister Helen Murray, brothers Roy, Marion and Myles Fry.

January, 1944 he entered WWII in the 28th Infantry Division of the US Army. He was captured and retained as a prisoner of war for seven months. He suffered starvation, freezing temperatures and unimaginable conditions for a human being to endure. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945 as a Corporal. He received the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal and a Purple Heart for wounds received in Germany, November 1944 when captured.

He returned to Aberdeen, SD to help with the family trucking business. He hauled livestock long and short distances. He eventually bought the business and continued as Bill Fry Trucking. He married Helen Williams in 1951. They had 5 children. Bill loved auctions – he made buying things an art form. He was always making a deal. The war made him fearful of being without, so he made sure to always have ample supply of –everything! He was generous to his friends and family. He was the driving companion you could count on – he didn’t mind leaving early, even 4 am. He was a GPS before they were invented, he knew every road and back road that existed. In his later years, he enjoyed watching his children and their families grow and succeed. He was appreciative of every visit and phone call.

He died at the Veterans Home in Lisbon, ND on September 22, 2011 after a battle with heart failure and cancer.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children; Richard (Roxie) Fry, Robert (Donna) Fry, William (Tracy) Fry, Lisa (Roger) Reich, Julie (Mike) Mallett, 17 Grandchildren, 8 Great-Grandchildren.

Preceding him in death is his wife; Helen, parents; William and Lillian Fry, siblings; Marion Fry, Myles Fry, Roy Fry, and Helen Murray, Grandson; Shannon Fry and one stillborn infant.

ROSA LENA GAGNON

The graveside service for Rosa Lena Gagnon, 90, Aberdeen is 11:00 am, Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Riverside Memorial Park. Pastor Tom Haggar will officiate. Rosa died Thursday, September 22, 2011 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. is in charge of arrangements.

Rosa Lena Bowersock was born on November 12, 1920 at Lisco, Nebraska to James and Irene P. (Ullary) Bowersock. She attended school in Scotsbluff and graduated in 1943. She worked in Scottsbluff until her marriage to Leland Gagnon on November 11, 1950. After their marriage they moved and made their first home in Aberdeen. She was employed at St. Luke’s Hospital in the kitchen. Mr. Gagnon also worked at St. Lukes until his death on April 27, 1971. Rosa also worked at Taylor Laudry and Tiffany Laundry for several years. She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital for 16 years.

Grateful for having shared Rosa’s life is her stepson; Tom Gagnon, one brother, George Bowersack, Long Beach, CA, four sisters, Pearl Davidson, Cheyenne, WY, Fanny Hathewey, Broadwater, NE, Laura Einnel, Cheyenne, WY, Rhoda Trustson, Holden, MO and many nephews and nieces.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband, Leland, Gagnon, one stepdaughter, Salley Droppo.

Wm. DAVID “DUTCH” LONG

The memorial service for David “Dutch” Long, 88, of Aberdeen, is 1:00 p.m., Friday, September 23, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating.

David Long, son of Paul Harold, Sr. and Esther Hannah (Gram) Long was born on November 18, 1922 on the Sperry farm near Bath, SD. The family farmed near Bath and he went to school in Aberdeen. During the depression the family moved to Aberdeen and bought the house David lived in now. Around the age of 2 months, David contracted Polio and around the age of 7 spent time at the Shriner’s Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. He attended Garfield Elementary School and graduated from Central High School. At Central he was the student manager for the high school football team and later was student manager of a college football team. On April 12, 1986, he married his soul-mate, Kathy. They had 25 years of happy marriage and travels together.

David worked for the YMCA and later delivered messages for Western Union. He made deliveries for Reinhart Brothers, which moved to Minneapolis and then worked in the mailroom at Nelson’s Auto. David found great pleasure in woodworking and made some of the furniture that is still in his house. He also enjoyed getting outside and traveling. His German Shepherd, Rambo, was his faithful companion. Before Rambo, David had Frisco and Tiger, his loving Shelties.

David was a member of First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen. He was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan. David liked the Baltimore Orioles and their minor league team, better known as the Aberdeen Pheasants. He enjoyed having members of the Pheasants and college boys stay in his home. David cheered for the North Carolina State University teams where his brother attended.

Grateful for having shared David’s life are his loving wife, Kathy Long, Aberdeen, sister-in-law, Inga Long, Benson, MN, sister-in-law, Dorla Long, Arizona, special nephew, David Long who has been there for David and Kathy, and many nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Paul Jr., Merle, and Robert, and his sister, Dorothy Stavlo.

AGNES HAAS

The funeral service for Agnes Haas, 75, Aberdeen, is 1:30 p.m., Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial following at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Agnes died Sunday, September 18, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation is from 1-7 p.m. Friday, September 23, with family present from 5-7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Agnes Fischer was born on March 21, 1936 to John and Elma (Heim) Fischer at Bently, ND. She grew up on the family farm near New Leipzig, ND and attended school in town. After receiving her education, Agnes lived with a family in the area where she kept house and cared for their children.

On April 22, 1956, Agnes married Clifford R. Haas at Burt, ND. Clifford worked in construction and they moved 24 times in their first 12 years of marriage. The family lived in various towns in North Dakota during this time. Each time they moved, Agnes made sure the family was able to experience the local culture and history by attending festivals and visiting museums. In 1969 they moved to Aberdeen where they settled down. Agnes worked at Dutch’s Smorgasbord House. When they closed, she began work at Serv-All Linen and Towel Supply. Later she worked at the Coca Cola Distributing Company and then for a short time, she worked at K-Mart.

Agnes was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. Church was a very important part of her life. She was active in the Ruth Morning Fellowship Circle and the Piece Makers Circle at the church and made many quilts there. She was very talented at making crafts and loved to crochet, make quilts and afghans. These were often given to family and friends as gifts. She also made many dolls that she would give as gifts. Agnes had a very compassionate and caring spirit. She was always generous with her time and talents. Family was also very important to Agnes and many of the family trips were centered around seeing someone dear to her.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 55 years, Clifford, Aberdeen, two sons, Dick Haas, Aberdeen and John (Marsha) Haas, Redding, CA, three brothers, Lester (Katherine) Fischer, Pierre, SD, Roy (Janet) Fischer, Belle Fourche, SD, and Les Fischer, Albuquerque, NM, two sisters, Irene Bersch, Mott, ND and Barbara (Victor) Hellman, Monticello, MN, four grandchildren, Kimberly Haas, Jennifer Haas, Jacob Haas, and Emma Haas and many nieces and nephews.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elma, two sisters, Esther Haas and Ida Marthaller, and her daughter-in-law, Melanie Haas.

ROBERT HENRY VOSS

Funeral service for Robert Henry Voss, 75, Aberdeen is 10:00am, Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Northern Plains Baptist Church, 1604 S. Melgaard Road, Aberdeen. Pastor Neil Hannahs officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Robert died on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Robert Henry Voss, son of Carl Edward and Zelma Alice (Moles) Voss was born on July 18, 1936 in Worthington, MN. This was the area where he was raised and attended school. Robert graduated from Brewster High School and attended the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. He began working for Western Electric and eventually starting farming.

He was united in marriage to Beverly Latzke on December 27, 1959 in LeSueur, MN. They made their home in Minnesota until 1972 when they moved to South Dakota, living in Glenham, Wakpala and later Mobridge. Robert worked in a laundry for a short time and as a custom combiner for about 10 years prior to starting his career at the Pollock Cheese Plant where he was employed until his retirement in 1997. Following his retirement, Robert began making his home in Aberdeen and spent the last several winters in Bibleville, Texas.

Robert enjoyed model railroading and was a past member of the James Valley Model Rail Road Association. He was an avid Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings fan and also enjoyed a good cup of coffee. Robert had a strong faith and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1980. He was a member of Northern Plains Baptist Church in Aberdeen where he previously served as Deacon.

Grateful for having shared Robert’s life include his wife Beverly of Aberdeen; daughters Rebecca (William) Sitter, Aberdeen; Bobbie Voss, Aberdeen; and Rochelle (Jeff) Geist, Newell, SD; grandchildren Hunter Rae Sitter, Dayton Wirth, Mathew Geist, Melissa (Cory) McCloud, Lesley Geist and Micheal Geist; great granddaughter Sara McCloud; and two brothers Ned Voss and Jim (Kay) Voss.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents.

HELEN BRADLEY COWIE

The funeral service for Helen Bradley Cowie, 97, of Aberdeen will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 9, 2011 at First Baptist Church, with Rev. David Phillips and Dr. Harold Salem officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Helen died Sunday, September 4, 2011 at the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Thursday, September 8, with family present from 4-7 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Helen was the oldest child of Glenn and Mary (Harwood) Brady. She was born on the family farm in Benton Township, near Conde, April 18, 1914.

She received her elementary education at the McLain School, and secondary at Conde and Brentford High, graduating from Brentford in 1931. In October of 1931 she went to Darien, Wisconsin to live with her aunt and maternal grandfather. She was employed by Bradley Knitting Mills as a cutter and model. Helen was a member of Darien Baptist Church, and taught Sunday school and the young adult group.

She and Elmer Cowie were married November 24, 1937 in Delavan, Wisconsin. They lived in Darien until 1942, when they returned to Brentford where Elmer farmed with his family. They established their own farm in LaPrairie township in 1952 and raised their family there. In the Brentford area, Helen was active in the Congregational Church where she taught toddler Sunday school class, was in Women’s Fellowship and a deaconess. She was active in Eastern Star and held many offices including Worthy Matron. Helen was a long time member of the Chatty Hour Birthday Club.

Helen was active in local and county 4-H activities. She led the Prairie Lassies Jr. for 20 years. She shared her love of sewing with many area girls, helping them develop projects and demonstrations for competition and chaperoned many camps.

In the mid 1980’s Helen and Elmer retired in Aberdeen. She became active in the First Baptist Church and participated in the Y.M.C.A. senior swim program.

Helen’s many hobbies included gardening, sewing, crocheting and learning new craft skills to share. Throughout her life she gave generously of her time and resources to her family and friends.

Helen is survived by her children; Barbara (Terry) Pekron, Anita Holaday, Keith (Kathy Quinn) Cowie, sister; Blanche Peters, grandsons; Sean (Gwynne) Pekron, Rob (Monica) Cowie, Reed (Katie) Cowie, great grandchildren; Hali and Tristan Pekron, Elizabeth Cowie, Kensley and Kellen Pekron, brother-in-law; Leland Prentice and granddaughter-in-law; Bonnie Johansson.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Elmer Cowie, parents; Glenn and Mary Bradley, brothers; George and Robert Bradley, sisters; Ruth Blondo, Marian Martens, Vida McNab, Mary Hersey and Joyce Prentice, grandson; Scott Pekron and son-in-law; Burk Holaday.

The family intends to create a scholarship awarded to a female 4H member from Spink County. Memorials will go to the creation of this Scholarship.

SGT. LESLIE G. DELL

April 1, 1932-Sept 4, 2011

Leslie G. Dell, 79, of Aberdeen, formerly of Conde. died Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen. Funeral services will be Thursday, September 8, at 2pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Father Shane Stevens officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24, and interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Visitation from 5-7, Wednesday evening, with a Prayer Vigil at 7pm.

Leslie George Dell was born on April 1, 1932 to Melvin J. and Ruth L. (Murray) Dell near Ordway, South Dakota. He attended school through the 8th grade at Ordway, and graduated from Bath High School in 1950. He was the 1948 School Carnival King, and was active in sports. Following graduation Les served in the United States Army. He saw 17 months of action in Korea with the 58th Floating Bridge Company. Following his honorable discharge, Les worked for Angerhofer Trucking.

Leslie married Margaret M. Jung Marquette on February 9, 1963 at Aberdeen. They made their home in Aberdeen until 1972, at which time they moved to a farm near Conde. Les and Margaret maintained their own operation, and Leslie did custom combining. In the mid-1990’s, Leslie retired from his own operation and began working for the Hearnen Brothers. In 2004, Leslie moved to Aberdeen and worked various jobs, including construction on the new beef processing plant.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a former member of St. John the Baptist Church, the Conde American Legion, and the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed bowling, socializing with friends and family, hunting, and traveling.

Grateful for having shared Leslie’s life are his wife, Margaret Dell, Aberdeen, five children: Barbara (Gregg) Johnson, Oro Valley, AZ, Michael (Sharon) Dell, Rapid City, Teresa Marquette, Huron, Caroline “Susie” Dell, Aberdeen, and James (Cindy) Dell, Faribault, MN, one daughter-in-law, Barbara Heim Dell, Watertown, one sister-in-law, Darlene Dell, Bath, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many friends, neighbors, and other relatives.

Leslie is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin & Ruth Dell, one son, Daniel Patrick Dell, two brothers Lester and Gerald.

Blessed be his memory.

GORDON D. BIERMAN

Memorial service for Gordon D. Bierman, 82, Warner is 10:30am, Monday, September 5, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mansfield. Pastor Lloyd Redhage and Vicar Bret Bierman officiating. Inurnment following in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery. Military honors by the Mansfield and Northville American Legion Post’s. Gordon died Wednesday, August 31, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation is from 2:00-4:00pm with a prayer service at 4:00pm Sunday, September 4, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Gordon D. Bierman, son of Martin Otto and Elsie (Borchard) Bierman was born on November 20, 1928 near Mansfield. This is the area where he was raised and attended country school. Gordon went on to graduate from Northville High School. Following his graduation Gordon enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served during the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge in 1953 and began making his home in Aberdeen.

Gordon was united in marriage to Alice Rehfeld on June 9, 1957 in Warner, SD. They made their home in Aberdeen for a short time prior to moving to a farm near Warner. They purchased his uncle’s farm near Mansfield where they remained for 30 years until retiring and moving back to Warner.

For many years Gordon was very active at Trinity Lutheran Church singing in both the Men’s and Mixed Choirs. He was also a member of the Mansfield American Legion. For 28 years Gordon served as Township Supervisor for the Northville Township. During his retirement he enjoyed helping his son do custom harvesting. Gordon loved playing cards and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Gordon’s life are his wife Alice Bierman, Warner; children Delwin Bierman, Warner; Jolene (Monty) Forsting, Aberdeen; Neal (Donna) Bierman, Avon, SD; Troy (Jill) Bierman, Mansfield and Jerilyn (Dan) Mielke, Aberdeen; grandchildren Houston and Tanner Forsting, Cassandra and Nathan Bierman, Megan, Lexi and Trey Bierman and Dillon, Logan, and Jennah Mielke and two brothers, Rodger (Elvera) Bierman and Lyle Bierman.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Marianne and Janine and one grandson Alexander Gordon Bierman.
