MARLENE ELIZABETH (JASPERS) KOHLHAAS

The memorial service for Marlene Elizabeth Kohlhaas, 72, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am Tuesday, July 19th, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen, with Father Shane D. Stevens, Celebrant. Marlene died Friday, July 15, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital. Visitation is from 5-7pm Monday at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall.

Marlene was born on January 6, 1939 to Frank and Cora (Thornes) Jaspers in Britton, SD. Marlene grew up in Eden and Britton, SD. She graduated from Britton High School in 1956, then Northern State Teachers College, graduating in 1960. On December 28, 1961, Marlene married Jon Kohlhaas in Aberdeen, SD. In 1962 they moved to Winnemuca, NV, and returned to Aberdeen, SD in 1965. Marlene worked at Taylor Music in Aberdeen for over 30 years until she retired in 2004. She enjoyed ‘heading south’ for the winter these past few years to Mesa, AZ. She was also a long-time member of SAI Sorority.

Marlene (aka Mom or Gramma) had a love for music and theatre, and enjoyed going to many concerts and plays. She also volunteered many hours to community organizations such as ACT and Roncalli’s Nearly New. She loved reading, puzzles and playing cards. She truly enjoyed spending time with her 5 grandchildren – they were the light of her life. Her thoughtfulness and ‘ear’ will be greatly missed by many.

Marlene’s family wishes to extend a thousand thanks to Avera Hospital Systems (Aberdeen and Sioux Falls) and the Conklin Regional Cancer Center (Aberdeen) and their wonderful staff for the great care given to Marlene during her illness. You are all amazing!

She will be missed by her husband, Jon Kohlhaas; children, Jeanne Kohlhaas (Dave Lahti), St. Paul, MN; Paul (Michelle) Kohlhaas, Aberdeen; Nancy Miller, Aberdeen; and Deborah Grund, Bloomington, MN; grandchildren, Bryan Miller, Michaella Crouch, Brandon Grund, Lucas Miller and Jacob Kohlhaas; brothers Donald (Patsy) Jaspers, Rathdrum, ID, and David (RoseMary) Jaspers, Hot Springs Village, AR.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Leukemia & Lymphona Society (www.lls.org) in her name.

F. WAYNE SCHAUNAMAN

The funeral service for F. Wayne Schaunaman, 84, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Friday, July 15, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, with Father Kevin O’Dell officiating. Military honors will be provided by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen. Wayne died Tuesday, July 12, at VA Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD.

Visitation will be from 4-7pm Thursday, July 14, at the funeral home.

Frederick Wayne Schaunaman was born April 19, 1927 in Aberdeen, SD to Wm John and Minnie (Manning) Schaunaman. He entered the Army in 1945 and served in the infantry and field artillery until being honorably discharged in 1947. Wayne married Mary Louise Marlow, Sept. 11, 1949. They had two sons Brian Lee and Kim Wayne. Wayne went to work for JP Foster Caterpillar Dealer in 1955 in Aberdeen and transferred to Pierre in 1965. He continued to work there as the company changed names to Foster Bell Co. and later Kearn’s Machinery Co., until retiring in 1983.

Wayne enjoyed camping and travelling. His greatest joy came from time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared his life are his two sons, Brian Lee (Susan), Sioux Falls, SD, and Kim Wayne (Terri), Sergeant Bluff, IA, six grandchildren, Matthew (Rebecca) Schaunaman, Kurt (Lena) Schaunaman, Katie Schaunaman, Troy (Brittney Kruger) Schaunaman, Amanda (Todd Bauerly) Schaunaman and Sarah Schaunaman, 13 great grandchildren, Tanner, Kaitlyn, Kyla, Connor, Olivia, Wayne, Brianna, Brooklyn, Audrina, Tyson, Sophie, Talyn, and the family is expecting a new addition this fall, two sisters, Violet Knudson, Fresno, CA and Lois (Leo) Rystrom, Frederick, SD and one brother Bill (Evelyn), Aberdeen. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise, his parents, two brothers Roy and Elmer, and two sisters Betty Ross and Jean Lueck.

DAVID J. KURTZ

David J. Kurtz, 67, Stratford, SD, died Sunday, July 10, 2011 at Golden Living Center, Redfield, SD. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen.

Arrangements by Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 11 S Main St, Aberdeen, SD.

David J. Kurtz was born on November 16, 1943 to Otto and Gladys (Haase) Kurtz at Webster, SD. David was employed by the South Dakota Wheat Growers Assoc. and was a long time resident of Straftford area.

Grateful for having shared David’s life are his brothers, Donald Kurtz of Groton, SD and
Gary Kurtz of Deer Park, WA.

David was preceded in death by his parents Otto and Gladys Kurtz, sister Barbara Urbanski, half brothers Edward and Orville Kurtz, half sister Margaret Ranger.

ERNA VIOLA DEWALD

The funeral service for Erna DeWald, 76, Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm Thursday, June 30, 2011 at First Reformed Church, Aberdeen with Reverend David Dawn officiating. Erna died Wednesday June 22, 2011 at her home.

Visitation will be from 5-7pm with a prayer service at 7pm Wednesday June 29th at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Erna Viola Kapp was born July 18, 1934 to Jacob and Lydia (Gohl) Kapp at Dupree SD. At the age of four years her parents moved to the Leola area where she grew up and went to Leola Public School.

Erna married LeRoy DeWald on July 24, 1955 at Leola SD. They made their first home in Fort Gordon GA, where her husband LeRoy was stationed. After his honorable discharge, they moved to Forbes ND to farm. In 1961 they sold the farm and moved to Aberdeen where Erna worked various jobs, retiring from McDonalds on July 1, 1999. Her husband LeRoy died July 16, 2000.

Grateful for having shared Erna’s life are daughters Brenda (Victor) Flint, Anchorage AK, Rhonda (Lowell) Bittner, Sioux Falls SD, Nancy (Gary) Kiefer, Watertown SD, Deanna (Phillip) Alumbaugh, Redfield SD, Lisa (Barry) Bogle, Norman OK, eleven grandchildren, Lance (Heather) Flint, Brianna Flint, Jacob Flint, Amy (Kris) Fauth, Sarah Kiefer, Alyssa Kiefer, Adam Kiefer, Brian Alumbaugh, April Alumbaugh, Jonathon Bogle, Patrick Ahearn, sisters Gloria (Maurice) Garmen, Ruth (Jerome) Hochhalter, Mary (Viril) Layton, Marie (Gordon) Geffre and brother Richard (Velara) Kapp.

She was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy, parents, two brothers Ephraim Kapp, Otto Kapp, sister Gertrude Conway and grandson Daniel Kiefer.

ANNA CHRISTINA STOECKER

Services for Anna Christina Stoecker, 95, Aberdeen are 2 pm, Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Anna died Saturday, June 25 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Visitation: 1-7 pm, Monday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Anna Christina Jacobson was born on June 30, 1915 to Nels and Anna (Carlson) Jacobson at Leola, SD. Anna was baptized on August 15, 1915 at St. James Lutheran Church, Leola and confirmed on May 19, 1929 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Leola. She attended school at Leola and graduated from Leola High School with the class of 1931. After her education she worked at various jobs in Leola and Aberdeen. She married Rudolph Stoecker on October 16, 1948 at Leola. They made their home on a farm near Leola until 1958 when they semi-retired and moved to Aberdeen. She then became employed with the South Dakota Department of Labor until 1977 when she retired. Rudolph died on May 9, 1984 at Aberdeen. She moved into an apartment at Avera Mother Joseph Manor with her sister Mildred in 2000, and then moved to the nursing home in 2004.

Anna was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Aberdeen and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League making blankets for world relief. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, sewing, reading and doing crossword puzzles. Above all she enjoyed time spent with family.

Grateful for having shared Anna’s life are her daughter-in-law, Verda Stoecker-Sik, Round Lake, MN, grandchildren, Mark Stoecker, Paul (Carol) Stoecker, Debbie (Mike) O’Daniel, Kari (Todd) Bierman, Tony (Marina) Stoecker, LeAnn (Courtney) Miller and JoAnn Stoecker (Ty Pranger), great grandchildren, Jesse, Jonah, John Paul, Ashton, Joel (Megan), Sara, Jordan, Jarrod, Braenna, Daniel (Karin), Nena (Romnil), Theron, Madisyn, Kamryn, Brayden and Trey, great-great grandchildren, Daniel, Jr., Kadrin Joseph, SueEllen, Toni Lee, Kaylee, two nephews, William and James Jacobson.

Anna is preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Stoecker, son, Marvin Stoecker, parents, Nels and Anna Jacobson, brothers, Robert Jacobson, Walter Jacobson, Eric Jacobson, sisters, Mildred Tolson and Esther Jacobson.

BEN F. DAYTON

Services for Ben F. Dayton, 82, of rural Aberdeen, are 10:30 am, Thursday, June 23 at First United Methodist Church, Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Inurnment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 1-7 pm, Wednesday, family present from 5-7 and a prayer service at 7 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Ben F. Dayton was born May 27, 1929 to Arlo Spencer and Jeanette “Nettie” (Thompson) Dayton on the family farm near Stratford, SD. He attended grade school in Rondell Township through 8th grade and often remarked of trapping fur-bearing animals enroute on his 2½ mile walk to school each day. He carried a 22 caliber rifle with him and sat it in the corner of the school room during the school hours. He was mechanically inclined – made his own “farm toys” and was able to repair most farm equipment as well as household appliances. He remodeled many homes of friends including his own. He began farming at age14 with his father, as three of his brothers went away to serve their country. He learned to weld and helped his father build a farm tractor and improve other farm equipment. He was self taught in plumbing and electrical work.

On June 2, 1949 he married Shirley Vitense of Columbia who had been the rural school teacher for his younger brother and sister. In the fall of 1953 they moved to a farm in the Columbia and Sand Lake area where they raised their four children and he enjoyed hunting with his family and friends.

On their 25th Wedding Anniversary they purchased a travel trailer and began to travel south for part of the winter. Their stays gradually lengthened until at retirement in 1991 they were able to be away for half the year, making many new friends and memories.

He went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 18 after fall.

Grateful for having shared Ben’s life, his wife of 62 years, Shirley Dayton, son Allan (Debbie) Dayton, Louisville, KY, daughters, Bonnie (Roger) Brick, LeAnn Conn, Aberdeen, and Jo Lyn Boyett, St. Augustine, FL, six grandchildren; Carly (Pat) Wolberg, Aberdeen, Brett (Stacy) Dayton, Gillette, WY, Aimee (Kevin) Anderson, Aberdeen, Ryan (Jamie) Brick, Mellette, SD and Casey and Megan Boyett, St. Augustine, FL. Fifteen Great-Grandchildren; Darcy (Jeff) Nelson, Christian, Jordan and Madison Dayton, Gillette, WY, Patrick Wolberg, Hannah LaJoie, Brynn, Tanner and Kenna Wolberg, Jaicee, Kamryn and Kendyl Anderson, Aberdeen, Preston, Alyssa and Emily Brick, Mellette, Brother, Don (Fae) Dayton, Stratford, sister, Mae Radcliff, Sun City, CA and Gladys Hansen, Aberdeen.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters, Hazel and Arlys, and four brothers, Earl, Robert, Ray and Dale, and Son-in-Law, Larry Conn.

Ben was a past member of Columbia Congregational UCC where he served as a trustee and deacon. For the past 20 years was a member of First United Methodist Church. He had also been a faithful member of Hub City Sams’ Camping Club for many years where he met and enjoyed many new friends.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials of your choice or First United Methodist Church.

JOYCE “JOYCIE” ELAINE LEMER

Funeral service for Joyce “Joycie” Elaine Lemer, 63, Aberdeen will be 10:00am, Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen. Dr. Harold E. Salem will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Joyce died Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Southridge Healthcare Center in Sioux Falls.

Visitation will be from 1:00-7:00pm, Tuesday, June 21, 2011 with family present from 5:00-7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

Joyce Elaine Bertsch, daughter of Herbert and Ruth (Stroh) Bertsch was born on February 13, 1948 in Eureka, SD. At a young age she moved to Aberdeen with her family where she was raised and graduated from high school. Following her graduation she began working as a waitress.

Joyce was united in marriage to James Lemer on August 3, 1968 at Aberdeen. This is where the couple made their home. For many years Joyce remained at home raising her two daughters teaching them to live, laugh, learn and love. At this time she also operated a day care. Later in life she went on to work for the state of South Dakota, retiring in April of 2011.

Joyce loved being with her family and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. In her free time she enjoyed camping and reading. Joyce was also a big fan of Elvis Presley. For many years she was an active member of Tops.

Grateful for having shared Joyce’s life are her two daughters Lisa (Rick) Kunkle of Tea, SD and Amy (Chris) Sayler of Mound, MN; two granddaughters Reahl and Madison Kunkle; one grandson Caden Sayler; five sisters Judy Pahl, Kathy (Kenny) Jones, Deb (Roy) Roebuck, Pam Bertsch and Dawn Bertsch and three brothers Jeff (Arleen) Bertsch, Tim (Nettie) Bertsch and Terry Bertsch.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents Herbert and Ruth Bertsch, husband James Lemer, one brother Richard Bertsch, step mother Ramona Wolff Bertsch and one step sister Gail Dilger.

GERALD “JERRY” HOWARD

Funeral service for Gerald “Jerry” Howard, 75, Aberdeen will be 10:30am, Friday, December 9, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Tom Haggar will officiate. Burial will be at 11:30am, Saturday, December 10 in the Graceland Cemetery, Corsica, SD. Jerry died on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 8, 2011 from 1:00-7:00pm with family present from 5:00-7:00pm and a prayer service at 7:00 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Gerald Arthur Howard was born on May 10, 1936 to Carl and Theresa (Neisz) Howard at Houghton, SD. He graduated from Groton High School with the class of 1954. Jerry went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from June 16, 1954 until April 8, 1958.

Jerry was united in marriage to Paula Angell on July 5, 1958 in Providence, RI. They moved to SD in 1961. They made their home in the Groton and Columbia area where they raised their five children. Jerry worked at Spaulding’s in Aberdeen and Bowles and Sour in Groton where he did auto body work. He worked on the family farm, operated the Sinclair gas station in Columbia and worked at Northern Farm Supply. In October of 1974, Jerry became employed with the 3-M Company where he remained until his retirement in April of 1995.

After his retirement Jerry worked for a short time at Menard’s. He then built a woodshop and did woodworking for a number of years. Jerry was a member of the Woodworking Club in Aberdeen and over the years made many toys for children.

On May 29, 1980 Jerry married Donna Dykstra in Platte, SD. Together they made their home in Aberdeen.

Jerry was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Aberdeen. In his free time Jerry loved bowling and woodworking. He enjoyed the outdoors especially camping and fishing. His greatest joy was the time he was able to spend with his family.

Grateful for having shared Jerry’s life are his wife Donna, Aberdeen; five children, Jerilyn (Dennis) Askew, Chesapeake, VA; John (Susan Anderson) Howard, Ken Howard and John (Tracey) Lendry all of Groton and Eric (Heather) Howard, Rapid City; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three brothers, Frank (Lenora) Howard, Burnsville, NC; Chester (Connie) Howard, Bath, SD; and Jay (Rosemary) Howard, Groton and a number of nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Velton, Elton and Carl and one sister Lucile.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials in Jerry’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, South Dakota Office, 1000 N. West Avenue, #250, Sioux Falls, SD 57104.

MARVIN N. LOUT

The funeral service for Marvin N. Lout, 78, Aberdeen, is 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, with Pastor Jack Erickson. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, Military Honors by Sidney L. Smith Post 24. Marvin died Sunday, December 4, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-6 p.m., Tuesday, December 6 with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Marvin Nathaniel Lout was born on June 3, 1933 to John and Marie (Forkel) Lout on the family from in Edmunds County, near Onaka. He grew up on the farm and attended country school. Marvin graduated from Roscoe High School and went on to receive his teachers certificate from Northern State Teachers College. He taught at a country school for one year. On August 17, 1954, Marvin married Mable Bauer at Aberdeen. They lived in Onaka for several years before moving to Aberdeen. Marvin entered the US Army in 1955 and served in Germany and France as a loader operator and interpreter. After his discharge in 1957, he returned home and began work in construction. In the mid 60’s, Marvin started his own construction business. He was owner of Marvin N. Lout Construction until the time of his death. Marvin also loved to work as an auctioneer whenever he was able to.

Marvin was a lifetime member of the VFW. He was also a member of the Eagles Club. Marvin and Mable loved to dance, especially to polka music. They also enjoyed spending time with their family and friends. Marvin would often spend time with his friends having coffee at the Starlite.

Grateful for having shared Marvin’s life are his wife, Mable, daughter, Sharon (Carey) Lehr, two sons, LeRoy (Donna) Lout and Terry (Hollee) Lout, one sister, Delores Severson, four brothers, Ray (Idella) Lout, Derald (Karen) Lout, Jerald Lout, and Donald (Joyce Miller) Lout, all of Aberdeen, his brother-in-law, Gary (Carol) Feiock of Sioux Falls, SD, eight grandchildren; Angela (Chris) Hermansen, Kevin Lout (Danielle Frazier), Ashley Lehr, David Lout, Cassandra (Charles) Kintz, Justin (Whitley LeCompt) Lehr, Michael (Caylin Darling) Lout, and Derek Lout, and two great grandchildren; Jon & Maddison Kintz.

Preceding Marvin in death are his parents, John and Marie Lout, and sister, Marjorie Feiock.

The family would like to thank Dr. Myrmoe and his staff along with the staff at Avera St. Luke’s for the kind and attentive care given to Marvin.
