DORIS ANN ATTEBERRY

Memorial service for Doris Ann Atteberry, 76, Aberdeen is 10:30 am, Thursday, December 8, 2011 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa, OK. Doris died Sunday, December 4 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Doris Ann Atteberry was born August 1, 1935 to Ira Selwyn & Velma May (Kreager) Atteberry in Coweta, OK. At a young age it was discovered that Doris had glaucoma and would lose her sight. Her family was proactive and she was enrolled in the Oklahoma School for the Blind. Doris enjoyed all her classes and loved learning. She also had fond memories of the social activities she participated in at the school. Doris felt especially blessed to have the opportunity to live and grow in a residential school. After recieveing her high school diploma from Oklahoma School for the Blind, she went on to Oklahoma Baptist University for three and one half years, graduating with a teaching degree. She taught at a residential school in Bathgate, ND for one year, and then moved to Aberdeen where she taught at the South Dakota School for the Visually Handicapped for 35 years.

Doris was a member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed music and was active in the church choir.

Grateful for having shared Doris’ life are her nieces; Frances Lightfoot, Mounds, OK, and Donna Lightfoot, Tulsa, OK, nephews; Dale (Tory) Lightfoot, Stillwater, OK, and Glen (Andrea) Lightfoot, Albany, NY, and great nephew and niece; Adam Lightfoot and Sylvie Lightfoot.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law and sister, Frank and Loretta Lightfoot.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Christian Worship Hour.

DELORIS M. WEST

The funeral service for Deloris M. West, 95, Aberdeen will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Eldon Reich will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Deloris died Saturday, December 3, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Groton, SD.

Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Deloris M. Knutson, daughter of Peter and Emma (Nelson) Knutson, was born on January 29, 1916 near Langford, SD. She moved with her family to Oakes, ND where she attended school prior to moving back to Langford.

Deloris began making her home in Aberdeen for several years until entering the Golden Living Center in Groton where she remained until the time of her death.

Deloris was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. She was an outstanding cook and she also enjoyed baking. In her free time Deloris enjoyed crocheting, quilting and making dolls. She was an avid bingo player.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children JoAnne (Arnold) Banik, Aberdeen; Jim (Jan) Thennis, Citrus Heights, CA; Barbara Thomas, Aberdeen; Shirley (Michael) Wolf, Mesa, AZ; and Judy (Jim) Dolney, Blaine, MN; 20 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 19 great great grandchildren.

Deloris was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters, Linda Hart and Shari West; two granddaughters, eight sisters and three brothers.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

JULIAN HANSON

Memorial service for Julian Hanson, 90 will be 3:00 pm, Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24. Pastor Deb Grismer will officiate. Burial will be a private family service at Scandinavia Lutheran Church at a later date.

Julian passed away December 3, 2011 after being cared for by his family and assisted by Hospice. He died amongst his family after long awaiting to be reunited with his wife in the presence of his Lord.

Julian Hanson was born on November 11, 1921 to Ole and Julia Hanson in Aberdeen, SD. He lived with his parents and siblings, Orville and Olive until the loss of both parents by the age of fourteen. He then lived with his half-brother, Carl, and his wife, Lena until beginning work for Joe Dixon. He entered the military service in September, 1944, honorably discharged in July, 1946. Julian served in the European Theatre during World War II, receiving the Victory Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Battle Star, and two overseas service bars. During his time of service he fought in both Germany and France.

Julian married Jean Danback on February 2, 1948 in Aberdeen, SD where they resided and had three children, Keith (deceased), Janice, and Jim. He was employed by Biegler Motors and High Grade Oil. In 1956 Julian began farm work with his uncle and cousin. At this time he and his wife moved their family to the farm where he remained until October 2011 when he moved to Aberdeen Homestead Apartments.

Julian was a kind and gentle man who enjoyed the activities and visits from his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He appreciated the help and visits from his friends, neighbors, and family, whom he always had a story to share.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter Janice Schock of Aberdeen, son Jim (Linda) Hanson of Aberdeen. Grandchildren: Brad (Lindsey) Schock, Tim (Shari) Schock, Tyler Hanson, and Gina (Christian) Pirlet. Great-grandchildren: Breanna, Keegan, Kylie, Damian, and Torey. One sister, Olive (Vernon) Evanson of Lemmon, SD.

Julian was preceded in death by his wife Jean, a son Keith, son-in-law Dennis Schock, brothers Carl, Alvin (infant), and Orville.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to North Plains Hospice, 305 South State Street, Aberdeen, SD 57401 or Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Avenue NE, Aberdeen, SD 57401, in Julian’s behalf.

ALICE SCHRENK

The funeral service for Alice Schrenk, 94, of Aberdeen will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Battey officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Alice died Friday, December 2, 2011 at her home in Aberdeen

Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. on Monday with the family present from 5-7 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Alice Fischer was born on November 27, 1917 to Jacob and Lydia (Schauer) Fischer at their home in McPherson County. She attended rural school. Alice went to Detroit Bible School in Michigan. After graduating, she returned to South Dakota.

On September 6, 1949 Alice married Milton E. Schrenk in Aberdeen. They were blessed with a daughter, Sheila and son, Sherwood. They moved to Ellendale, ND in 1955 and owned the Red Owl Grocery Store. In 1964 they moved to Aberdeen and owned the Dixie Cream Bake Shop. Alice also worked at Klein’s at both their downtown location and the present location. Over the years, Alice also volunteered at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Alice was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church where she played the piano, taught Sunday School and kept church historical scrapbooks. She was a member of the Women’s Missions Fellowship and also helped with the Awana program. Her strong faith has been an anchor for the congregation over the years. Alice had a heart for missions and she was able to visit her sister, Esther, who was in Africa as a missionary. She liked to travel and visited many areas around the United States, Canada, Europe and Africa. Alice enjoyed embroidering and gardening. She was a great cook and was known for her baking. Time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, always brought Alice great joy.

Grateful for having shared Alice’s life are her daughter, Sheila (Keith) Rath, Aberdeen, son, Sherwood “Woody” (Vickie) Schrenk, Aberdeen, granddaughter, Jan (Ken) Bjur and their children Jamie and Ashton Bjur, Aberdeen, grandson Steve (Nicole) Rath and their children Christian, Preston and Justin Rath, Britton, SD, grandson Chris (Ronna) Schrenk, Salt Lake City, UT and granddaughter, Lisa Schrenk, Alexandria, VA, and her sister, Helen (Jake) Ehman, Alpena, MI.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother, Albert Fischer and one sister, Esther Hoffman.

ESTHER MAY BLAKE URBAN

The funeral service for Esther May Blake Urban, 97, Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Monday, December 5 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Pastor Ron Wickard officiating. Private burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Northville. Esther died Thursday, December 1, at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.

Visitation: two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Esther was born to Herbert and Lucina (Pearson) Blake on September 3, 1914, at the family farm near Northville, SD. She graduated from Northville High School in 1933, attended a semester of college at Miltonvale, KS, and took a year’s credits at Wayne State University, Detroit MI, before marrying Jerome S. Urban of Cresbard in 1936.

Over the next 25 years, Esther and Jerome lived in a number of South Dakota communities, and had a daughter and two sons, all of whom Esther was very proud. In 1960, Esther returned to college and earned a teaching certificate from Northern State Teachers College. In 1962 she signed a contract with the Aberdeen Public School system to teach first grade and over the next 16 years, taught first, second and fourth grades at Tiffany, Adams, and May Overby Elementary Schools, retiring in 1978. She completed her B.S. in elementary education in 1969 at NSU.

Esther was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church UCC, and for many years, an active member of one of the Women’s Fellowship groups. She was a member of the Aberdeen Teachers Association, later the Aberdeen Retired Teachers Association, and with her retired friends, met monthly for coffee and conversation.

A creative and conscientious teacher, Esther was at heart a homemaker. Every house she ever lived in got painted inside and out. Curtains were sewn, furniture was stripped and stained or painted, gardens were planted. Every house became a home, clean, peaceful and comfortable. She liked craftwork, crocheting and sewing. She was a good cook, a master of the hearty soup and tasty casserole. She had a good mind and liked to read and travel. She was a creative writer. She enjoyed music and played the piano and harmonica. Esther had a lively sense of humor and loved puns. She had a strong sense of fair play and was, at times, fiercely independent. She was a woman of faith and believed in the power of prayer. She was a good mother and loyal friend to her family and neighbors.

Grateful for having shared Esther’s life are her daughter and son-in-law, Kristin Urban and Ross Dahlke, Maribel, WI; son and daughter-in-law Mark and Marcia (Howie) Urban, Belle Fourche; grandsons, Herbert and Robert Urban, Bloomington, MN; grandsons by marriage, William and Bryan Reagan, Charlotte, NC; area nieces and nephews: Colleen (Blake) and Selmer Anderson, Cresbard; Merritt Blake, Dave Blake and Marla Imberi-Blake all of Aberdeen; Rachel and Terry Jundt, Cresbard; Greg and Janet Urban, Hutchinson, MN; additional nieces, nephews and special friends Beryl Carroll and Martha Parsch of Aberdeen.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, four siblings and their spouses (Elmer Austin Blake and wife Gladys, Hazel Inita (Blake) Van Dover and husband Leonard, Herbert Norman (Mike) Blake and wife Violet, and Kenneth Wesley Blake and wife Juanita); husband Jerome S. Urban (1962) and son Blake Jerome Urban (2007); and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, cards and memorials are welcome.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at ManorCare for the kind and attentive care extended to our mother during her final stay with them.

MARILYN EILEEN JONES

The memorial service for Marilyn Eileen Jones, 76, Aberdeen, will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 5, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Inurnment will be at 3:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Marilyn died Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at her son’s home surrounded by family.

Visitation is 4-6 p.m., Sunday, December 4, with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Marilyn Eileen Erickson was born on April 13, 1935 to Charles and LaVersa (Manning) Erickson at Tacoma Park, Brown County, SD. This is the area where she started school. In 1941 the family moved to Aberdeen. Marilyn graduated from Central High School. She worked for her parents in the Milwaukee Café and various other cafes.

On December 15, 1956, Marilyn married Wilbert Meier at Webster, SD. They made their home in Aberdeen. She was assistant manager for Kessler Café and Deli until 1990. Marilyn married Delton W. Jones on May 25, 1990 at Aberdeen. They made their home in Aberdeen. In 1990 she started helping her son at the Airport Café. She continued to work there through 2008. It was then that she moved to the Homestead Apartments. She loved the friends she made there and was very active in the social events at the apartments.

Marilyn was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the VFW and the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed traveling and would often go to see family. She was able to go on several cruises and even traveled to Sweden. Marilyn enjoyed going to the casinos and playing cards with her good friends. She spent so much time with them that they were lovingly called her cronies, or crones for short, by her children. Marilyn and her friends also enjoyed bus trips to out of town casinos. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Marilyn’s life are her four sons, Ronald (Kim) Erickson, Steve (Katie) Meier, Scott (Terrill) Meier, and Stan Meier, two daughters, Sue (Brian) Prunty, and Sandy (Craig) Pfitzer, all of Aberdeen, her brother Dean (Sharon) Erickson, Aberdeen, sister, Lynda (Terry) Marko, Aberdeen, ten grandchildren, Corrie Sprinkel, Ryan Erickson, Michael Meier, Emily Meier, Hannah Meier, Sophia Meier, Brantson Meier, Nicole Jacobsen, Kyle Pfitzer and Taylor Pfitzer, five great grandchildren, Colin Sprinkel, Austin Sprinkel, Hunter Erickson, Mikaella Erickson, and Aiden Heathcote, and many nieces and nephews.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husbands Wilbert and Delton, her parents, Charles and LaVersa, her great granddaughter Ashtyn Sprinkel, two brothers, Vaughn Erickson and Donald Erickson and her sister Karen Currie.

The family prefers memorials to North Plains Hospice.

EARL H. STAHL

The memorial service for Earl H. Stahl, 84, of Bath, SD, will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 2, 2011 at North Highland United Methodist Church, Aberdeen, with Pastor Mark Ehrmantraut officiating. Military honors by Columbia American Legion Post 58. Inurnment will be at a later date at Bath Memorial Cemetery. Earl died Sunday, November 27, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen. Earl’s wishes were to be cremated.

Earl Harold Stahl was born on June 11, 1927 to Ralph and Elsie (Miller) Stahl on a farm north of Rockham, SD. He grew up on the farm and attended school in Northville. Earl graduated from Bath High School in 1945. He entered the US Army during World War II. Just before being transported overseas, Earl was chosen to be an aide for a general and spent his time in service in San Francisco, CA. After his service was over, Earl returned to the family farm. On June 19, 1949, Earl married Joyce Bean at the Scandinavia Lutheran Church, rural Bath. They made their home on the Stahl farm. In 1955 he attended trade school in Chicago where he became a diesel mechanic. He was always willing to help neighbors with mechanic work and as needed, worked as a mechanic and driver for Roger's Trucking in Aberdeen.

Earl was a member of North Highland United Methodist Church and a past member of Bath United Methodist Church. At North Highland, he served as a Trustee. He was instrumental in moving the old church into town and also in the construction of the new church. He loved the time spent in fellowship at church and also the time spent with his Tuesday morning coffee group. He enjoyed his outings with the “girls”, Darlene, Maxine and Doris. Earl was a member of the Columbia American Legion Post 58. He served on the Board of Directors at the Brown County Co-op and also served on the Bath School Board. Earl was the Justice of the Peace in Bath. He was an avid woodworker and spent many hours in his shop making things for his family, friends and church. Earl enjoyed traveling with his family and bus trips he and Joyce went on. One of their favorite trips was going to Hawaii. As much as he liked to travel, Earl loved the farm. The grandchildren also loved the farm and the fun things they were able to do there with their grandpa. Earl and Joyce truly loved their family and never missed any of their grandchildren's events.

Grateful for having shared Earl's life are his children, John (Sandra) Stahl, Aberdeen, Carolyn (Jim) Mund, Aberdeen, Laurie (A.M.) Mitchell, Houghton, and David (Carla) Stahl, Bath, grandchildren, Michael (Mary) Stahl, Ryan (Laura) Stahl, Jason Mund, Kaylee Mund (Steve Karfis), Corey (Jaimie) Mitchell, Erin (Damian) Bahr, Mathew Stahl, Morgan Stahl, great grandchildren, Samuel, Katherine, Joshua, Jakin, Jude, Grace, Rebekah, Payton, Paisley, Jackson, London, and one sister, Mildred (Lyle) Fritz

Earl is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, who died on December 26, 2007, and his parents.

ROSE MARTHA JASMER

Services for Rose Martha Jasmer, 93, Aberdeen, formerly of Leola will be 10:30 am, Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at St. James Lutheran Church, Leola. Pastor Deb Grismer and Janna Bader officiating. Burial in Green Mound Cemetery, Leola. Rose died on Sunday, November 27 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 pm, Tuesday, November 29 with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Rose Martha Schliebe, daughter of Gustov and Olga (Zempel) Schliebe was born on December 29, 1917 in Columbia, SD. She grew up in this area, graduating from Columbia High School in 1937.

Rose married Ernest Jasmer on September 6, 1937 in Columbia. They made their home near Leola where they farmed and raised their family. In 1980 they moved into Leola and managed an apartment building until 1995. Ernie died on December 20, 1996. Rose remained in Leola a short time and then entered the Golden Living Center in Ipswich and later Bethesda Home.

Rose belonged to the McPherson County Cow Bells and the Leola Hospital Auxiliary. Rose was a woman of deep faith. She was actively lived her faith in Jesus Christ at home and at St. James Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ladies Aid. She also sang in the Leola Senior Citizens Choir. Rose was a card player, involved in several Bridge clubs. She was an outstanding cook and enjoyed playing the piano and gardening. Several years ago she was crowned the Leola Rhubarb Queen. Rose especially loved all the time she was able to spend with her family.

Grateful for having shared Rose’s life are her children Jeanette (Ralph) Stensland of Milbank, SD; Richard (Janice) Jasmer, Leola; and Gerald (Rhonda) Jasmer, Huron; grandchildren, Sue (Kevin) Moore, David Stensland (Mel Vassey), Deb (Rod) Grismer, Pamela (Jason) Fauth, Gregory (Lisa) Jasmer, Denise Jasmer and Ben (Molly) Jasmer; ten great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter; sister Delores Zigastosky and brothers Milton (Jesse) Schliebe and Charles (Sue) Schliebe

Rose was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 sisters, Dorothy Freeman, Lillian Kamen Schumacher, and Agnes Schliebe; one grandson, Jeffrey Jasmer and two great grandsons, Joshua and Joseph Moore.

THOMAS “TOM” MAI

Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas “Tom” L. Mai, 63, Aberdeen, is 10:30 am, Thursday, December 1, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen.

Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Tom died at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, Friday evening, November 25, 2011 after a desired triumph over pain from his illness.

Visitation: 3-7 pm, Wednesday with a Wake and Rosary service at 7 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Thomas L. Mai was born on March 22, 1948 to Robert and Mary (Cronin) Mai at LeMars, IA. He was raised on a farm near Remsen, Iowa where he went to school, graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1966. While growing up, he played basketball on a team with his brother, and also played baseball. He attended Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. He worked at Wells Blue Bunny, sold life insurance, he was sales manager of several stores throughout his career which included Woolco and Shopko, bringing him to Aberdeen where he met the love of his life and best friend, Kathy. They were married on May 12, 1989 in Aberdeen. Tom managed the Shopko store until 1998, when he opened the Office Max store in Aberdeen, where he was manager until his death.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen. Tom had an insatiable spirit and will to live a full life with his family. He lit up when he talked to his older grandchildren, Jamie, Michaela, and Monika about their schooling and enjoyed playing basketball and poker with them when they would visit every summer. His fourth grandchild Noah touched him in ways that were indescribable. They played together daily. They would light up when they saw each other. Papa was a shining star to Noah. He loved playing with Teagan, his sweet fifth grandchild, and getting to know her personality. Kristel and Josh spent many quality moments going to movies with their Dad. Kristel always made his favorite things to eat ~ ginger snaps and stuffed green peppers. Josh loved watching sports with his dad and every year they watched the Super Bowl together, except when Josh was in the Marines. They loved talking about baseball and Notre Dame football, discovering and tasting new beers. Josh learned from his father the value of money and a good work ethic. Tom spent his life telling stories about growing up on the farm, gardening, golfing, he had great knowledge of repairing and building anything, collecting Budweiser mugs and Terry Redlin prints, learning new things and reading God's Word, becoming a 25 gallon blood donor, and spending time at Christmas with family and friends. He enjoyed the MAI saur braten family tradition, topped off with Sour Cream Raisin pie.

Grateful for having shared Tom’s life are his wife, Kathy, daughter, Kristel (Mike) Ingalls, Sioux City, IA; son, Josh Hoerth, Aberdeen, SD; his parents, Robert and Mary (Cronin) Mai, Remsen, IA; five grandchildren, Jamie stationed in Fort Hood, TX; Michaela and Monika, Sioux City, IA; Noah and Teagan, Aberdeen, SD; three brothers, Jim (Donna) Mai, Struble, IA, Paul (Patricia) Mai, Alton, IA, John (Sherrie) Mai, Struble, IA; three sisters, Carol (Robert) Hardy, Harrisburg, SD, Mary (Monte) Konopasek, LeMars, IA, Judy (Randy) Aldrich, Sioux Falls, SD; and 22 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.

ALYCE ANDERSON

Memorial service for Alyce Anderson, 79, Aberdeen will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Alice died at the Ozborne Hospital in Scottsdale, AZ.
