FLORENCE FERN CUMMINGS

Funeral service for Florence Fern Cummings, 90, Aberdeen is 2 pm, Friday, January 13 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Florence died Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Manor Care Health Services, Aberdeen.

Visitation: 1-7 pm, Thursday at the funeral home.

Born Florence Fern Leander in Alcester, South Dakota, on August 23, 1921, our mother was the 7th of 9 children born to Alfred Lawrence and Sadie Sarah Leander. Of 3 older brothers, 1 died before she was born. Three sisters, Mabel, Della, and Lillian, were older, working at jobs, around the house, or helping dad and brothers, Leslie and John, with field work when she was born. She had a younger sister, Vivian, with whom she stayed quite close while at home. One younger brother, Donald, was born when she was around 10 years old. At this time, one brother, Donald, survives.

She married Walter Laverne Cummings on March 5, 1947, in Aberdeen. Together, they had 5 children. Widowed in September 1965, she raised us, her children, with help from and emphasis on the importance of extended family – aunts, uncles, cousins, sharing time for holidays and birthdays. Most of our lives were spent in a small house on Wells Street that daddy had given to her when still in blueprint form. Together they tiled the floors and painted the walls.

Four of us, the children, survive today. Lester. Florence Faye, and Glen live in South Dakota. The oldest, Brian, and spouse, Carla, live in and have raised their 8 children in southern California: Analisa, Hollyanna, Christian, Collin, Keenan, Adriana, Bethany, and Cameron. At the time of her passing she had been blessed with 9 great-grandchildren. Analisa (Bruce) has 2 daughters, Hollyanna (Jared) has 2 daughters and 3 sons, Keenan (Koseli) has 1 son, and Adriana (Brian) has 1 daughter. Christian (Marie), Collin (Jana), Bethany, and Cameron have no children to date.

Florence completed an 8th grade education in Alcester and later, in Aberdeen, pursued a typing certificate. She assisted Walter as he operated a mobile ex-ray unit and was employed as a nurse’s aide. She retired from J.C.Penney store where she was employed in the janitorial department. She did babysitting. She was a volunteer for the Foster Grandparent Program in Aberdeen, assisting in the Boys & Girls Club and in the NSU Day Care Center for more than a decade.

As Walter was ill and required hospitalization periodically during their life together, she was at times left alone in difficult times to contend with often very difficult circumstances in particular in New Mexico during the 1950s, far from any family or friends, her faith sustaining her. As the oldest child, Brian observed, “She endured with humility and steadfastness trials that would have defeated the strongest among us. She always put others and especially her children, first. She was sometimes slow to decide, but she was also slow to anger and always saw the good in others.” Indeed, she did.

And her ready applause, be it for wilted dandelions offered from a daughter’s small hand, a toad leaping from a son’s pocket, the first scribbled lines of a great grandchild, made each of us feel special. Her magic wasn’t limited to family. Anyone lucky enough to fall within Bernice’s orbit came away from the encounter smiling, a renewed zest to pay kindness forward.
