Alice M. Meyer

Alice M. Meyer, age 66 of Hartington, NE, died on Friday, August 20, 2004, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, SD.

Funeral services will be on Monday, August 23, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with the Rev. John Pietramale officiating.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. A vigil service will be at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery in Hartington, NE.

Pallbearers are Bob Meyer, Steve Meyer, Ron Eskens, Bill Bruening, Randy Schurman, Gary Wieseler. Honorary pallbearers are Adeline Dreesen, Sylvia Peitz, Helen Eskins, Lorraine Feilmeier, Charlotte Leise, Wilma Jean Leise, Geralda McGregor, Sandra Loecker.

Alice was born on October 16, 1937, in Wynot, NE, to William and Clara (Ahlers) Eskens. She grew up in Wynot and graduated from Wynot High School in 1955. She attended Wayne State College and then began teaching in the rural area schools for five years. She then substitute taught at Holy Trinity Grade School for approximately three years. Alice married Gerald Francis Meyer on June 27, 1960, in St. James, NE. She began helping at the Holy Trinity Grade School library in the early 1980s and continued until the present time. Alice helped coordinate the Register Tapes for Education Program through Foodtown for Holy Trinity School. She also enjoyed cleaning houses for several Hartington families.

Alice was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Catholic Daughters of America, Nebraska Dairy Women, Town and Country Squares. She loved to play cards, crochet, caring for her garden and houseplants. She thoroughly enjoyed attending her grandsons' activities.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald of Hartington, NE; daughter and husband: Lisa and Ed Madarassy, Yankton, SD; son and wife: Larry and Shelli Meyer, Portland, OR; 3 Grandsons: James Meyer, Yankton, SD; Taylor Madarassy, Yankton, SD; Jonathon Meyer, Portland, OR; 3 Sisters & spouses: Mary Ann and Paul Schurman, Randolph, NE; Rita and Marvin Wieseler, Wynot, NE; Verena Bruening, Hartington, NE; 1 brother and wife: Bill Jr. and Pat Eskens, Jefferson, MO; sister-in-law: Marlene Eskens, Coleridge, NE

She was preceded by her parents, daughter Cheryl, brother Arnold Eskens, and brother-in-law Ralph Bruening.

Florence Uecker

RAPID CITY -- Florence Anna Uecker, age 98, of Rapid City and formerly of Wagner, died Saturday, August 21, 2004, at Clarkson Mt. View Nursing Home.

Florence was born August 27, 1905, to Fred and Minnie (Raabe) Goldhammer on their farm six miles south of Delmont, SD. She attended country school in this area. She became a child of God through the washing of Holy Baptism and later publicly confessed her faith before the Lord at the time of her confirmation in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. At the time of her death, she was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran of Rapid City.

On March 6, 1927, she married William G. Uecker of Wagner. The Lord blessed this marriage with seven children. William (Bill) died February 13, 1965.

Florence is survived by six of her seven children: Mildred (Vic) Laue of Rapid City, Ilah (Earl) Schmieding of Cupertino, CA; Alvin (Arlene) of Wagner; Harlan (Gena), Arlene (Jack) Mattis and Ron (Judy), all of Rapid City; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Lydia Hansen, Mitchell; and two half-sisters: Emma Winkler, Delmont, and Clara Roth of Mitchell; and one half-brother, Bill Peters of Wagner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; daughter, Kleta (Don) Rehwaldt; three brothers: Roy, Ray and John; and one sister, Meta Kirchhevel.

The Lord granted her a crown of eternal life at the age of 98 years, 11 months and 25 days.

Visitation will be from 4 PM to 7 PM today (Monday) at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, Rapid City, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.

Services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wagner, S. Dak., with the Rev. Joshua Reimche officiating.

Interment will be in the Wagner City Cemetery.

Vane Miller

Vane P. Miller, age 82, of Yankton, passed away Sunday, August 22, 2004, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 26, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. John Fischer officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, with military graveside rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791.

Visitations will be 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Don Miller, Frank Fryer, Rick Rohl, Ethan Beukelman, Don Wetrich, Bernard Duffy, Richard Vaughan and Davin Hubbs.

Vane was born September 21, 1921, in Troy, SD, to Earl J. and Elsie (Hinrichsen) Miller. He graduated from Waverly High School and continued his education at SDSU where he earned a B.S. in Agriculture.

In pursuit of his dream of being a pilot, Vane was inducted into the U.S. Marines and later the U.S. Army. He earned two honorable discharges and retired from the service in 1946.

Vane was united in marriage to Mary Duffy on June 14, 1952. He was Assistant County Extension Agent in Spink County and was later promoted to County Extension Agent at Hamlin County and then transferred to Yankton, SD.

He welcomed competition and enjoyed hunting, golfing, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family.

He was a great friend and mentor to his grandchildren. He was a member of the Elks, Golden K, Fox Run Golf Course, Knights of Columbus and American Legion.

Vane is survived by his wife, Mary of Yankton; two daughters: Pam (Frank) Fryer of Hartford, SD; and Paula (Rick) Rohl of Bellevue, NE; and three grandchildren: Ethan, Samuel and Dakoda, all of Bellevue, NE.

Vane was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Dorothy Farmer.

Leola Messner

Leola Messner, age 91, of Yankton, died Saturday, August 14, 2004, at Avera Yankton Care Center in Yankton.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2004, at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton, with the Reverend Paul Opsahl officiating. Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings, South Dakota.

Leola was born April 20, 1913, in northeast South Dakota to John and Anna (Gutormson) Storsteen. She grew up in Milbank, South Dakota and graduated from Milbank High School. She then attended nursing school in Webster, South Dakota. Leola pursued her nursing profession in Minneapolis, working at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Two years later, she moved back to Milbank to become the public school system nurse.

On August 16, 1942, she married George Donald Messner in Milbank. The family moved to Brookings, South Dakota, in 1947. Leola was initiated into Brookings Chapter BA of P.E.O. Sisterhood in 1951 and later was a member of Chapters AS and CO in Yankton, South Dakota. She belonged to the First Presbyterian Church in Brookings and later, the United Church of Christ (Congregational), in Yankton. She loved cooking, playing golf and bridge, and especially music and singing. Leola's unique art was displayed in her spectacular flower and vegetable gardens. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Janet Messner of Yankton; two grandchildren and their spouses, Whitney and Paul Andre of Minneapolis, Minnesota and David and Angi Messner of Peoria, Illinois; four great-grandsons, Theo, Mark, Alex, and Christien.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on May 25, 1986; two infant sons; one sister, Dorothea Peterson; and three brothers, Joel, John, and Amos Storsteen.

Memorials may be made to the United Church of Christ (Congregational) Organ Restoration Fund, 218 West 5th Street, Yankton, South Dakota 57078.

Martha O. (Holzwarth) Sayler

MENNO -- Martha O. (Holzwarth) Sayler, age 88 of Menno quietly passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2004, at the Freeman Community Hospital Nursing Home in Freeman, SD.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 9, 2004, at the Zion Reformed Church in Menno, SD, with Rev. Hans Kalkman officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery.

Visitations will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday, August 8, 2004, at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno, SD, with the family present from 7-9 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Michael Sayler, Douglas Sayler, Gregory Sayler, Christopher Sayler, Scott Akins, Robert Korn, Steven Korn, Paul Korn, Kevin Auch, William Hoff and Daniel Hoff.

Martha O. (Holzwarth) Sayler was born June 19, 1916 near Upham, North Dakota. Martha was baptized on July 22, 1917 by Rev. Johann M. Bauer.

At the age of 5 years old, Martha came to a farm seven miles west of Freeman, SD, to live with her parents, Christian and Magdalena Holzwarth, nee Bertsch.

On June 22, 1930, Martha was confirmed by Rev. William Hueneman at Johannestal Reformed Church near Freeman.

On August 13, 1939, Martha was united in marriage to Ruben Sayler. They farmed west of Freeman on her parents' farm until 1973 when they retired and moved to Menno, SD. Martha was a member of Zion Reformed Church in Menno.

Martha's first love was for the Lord and her family. She will always be remembered for her love of quilting, gardening and many flowers. Family and friends will always remember all the wonderful meals she joyfully prepared.

Thankful for having shared her life are her son, Roland and his wife Sandra of Freeman, SD; four daughters: Ruth and her husband Stanley Akins of Bell, FL; Violet Korn of Freeman, SD; Marion and her husband Terry Auch of Menno, SD; and Ramona and her husband Charles Hoff of Tripp, SD; 15 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Delores Franzwa of St. Paul, MN.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ruben; a grandson Russell Akins; son-in-law Ralph Korn; one half-brother and two half-sisters.

Carl Mumm

BLOOMFIELD, Neb. -- Carl F. Mumm, 59, of Bloomfield, Neb., died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 2004) at the Lied Transplant Center, Omaha, Neb.

Service is 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004, at First Trinity Lutheran Church, Bloomfield, Nebraska, with the Rev. Duane Fahr officiating. Organist is Dianne Diekmann. Interment is in Bloomfield Cemetery, Bloomfield, Nebraska, with military honors by VFW Post No. 4996 and American Legion Post No. 249, both of Bloomfield, Nebraska.

Pallbearers are Richard Eisenhauer, Mark Stelling, Warren Gieselman, Arnold Doerr Jr., Byron Vaness and Myron Kumm. Honorary pallbearers are VFW Post No. 4996.

Arrangements are under the direction of Brockhaus-Scott Funeral Home, Bloomfield, Nebraska.

Carl Francis Mumm, son of Aaron Mumm and Rachel Gieselman, was born on July 7, 1945, in Bloomfield, Nebraska. He attended Hillside School District 155, First Trinity Lutheran School and then graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1963. After graduation, he attended Nebraska Vocational Technical School in Milford, NE, where he received a Building Construction Technology degree in May of 1965. He worked as a carpenter in Omaha for the Bill Hayes Construction Co. until he enlisted in the United States Army in March of 1966. He served with the 63rd Signal Battalion in Okinawa and Vietnam for three years. From 1969 to 1973, Carl attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He worked as a claims adjuster for Aetna Life and Casualty in Minneapolis, MN. While working in Minnesota, he also became a private pilot and later received his commercial and instrument ratings. In 1975, he returned to Bloomfield to farm with his father, Aaron.

He enjoyed raising Angus cattle, raising and racing thoroughbred horses with his family, fishing, hunting, woodworking, and jewelry making. His family was very important to him and he very much enjoyed life.

Carl was married to Judith T. Klein on January 30, 1965, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church. They were blessed with three children: Nicholas, Stephen and Erin. He was a member of the First Trinity Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Angus Association, and the Knox Co. Cattleman's Association.

Over the last 30 years, he has served several times as an elder, a trustee, and a member of the finance board for the First Trinity Lutheran Church.

Carl battled leukemia for over two years and finally lost the battle at the age of 59 on August 4, 2004, at the Lied Transplant Center in Omaha, NE.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; son and his wife, Nicholas and Stacy of Ft. Bragg, N.C.; son and his wife, Stephen and Jennifer of Schweinfurt, Germany; and daughter, Erin of Omaha, NE. He is also survived by his mother, Rachel (Mumm) Carlow and stepfather, Vernon Carlow of Bloomfield, NE; his brother and his wife, Peter and Louise Strals of Augusta, GA; his sister and her husband, Elaine and James Hoppe of Ainsworth, NE; and many close family members and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Aaron Mumm.

Carl will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Eldor Dubs

SIOUX FALLS -- Eldor L. Dubs, 73, Sioux Falls, died Sunday (Aug. 8, 2004) at his home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Freeman, with burial at Freeman City Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today (Tuesday) with the family present from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Walter Funeral Home, Freeman.

Eldor was born May 21, 1931, at Freeman. He married Vergene Stern Aug. 28, 1955, at Freeman.

His wife died April 6, 2002.

He is survived by one son, Darwin (Lyla) Dubs, Sioux Falls; two daughters: Sheila (David) Peterson, Yankton; and Brenda (Christian) Paulsel, Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers: Harlan Dubs, Freeman; Dennis Dubs, Freeman; and LaVern Dubs of Canada; and four sisters: Darlene Schrag, Freeman; Evelyn Anderson, Freeman; Gerldine Saner, Marion; and Diane Corkill, Sioux Falls.
