DONALD WILLIAM VOGT

The funeral service for Donald William Vogt, 80, Aberdeen will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 22, 2012 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial at Riverside Memorial Park. Donald died Monday, March 19, at Bethesda Home.

Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 21, with family present from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Donald William Vogt was born on June 11, 1931 to William and Hattie (Dummann) Vogt in Clear Lake, SD. He grew up and attended school in Watertown, graduating in 1950. He attended the University of Nebraska, the University of South Dakota and graduated from Northern State Teacher’s College. Don received a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education and a Master’s Degree in Education.

Don married Roberta C. Bryson on May 31, 1953 in Watertown. They lived in Watertown where he taught social science and coached football, basketball and track. In 1958 they moved to Aberdeen. Don was involved at Northern State University where he served as a graduate assistant, coached football, and was the Dean of Men, Dean of Students and Director of Alumni affairs for 20 years. Don served as a high school administrator in Wood, Selby and Eureka. Upon retirement, he was a substitute teacher in the Aberdeen School District.

Don excelled at sports throughout his high school and college career. He was a star on both the football field and the track team. Don was inducted into the Watertown High School Arrow Hall of Fame in 2001 for his achievements on the field. He was also on the Argus Leader South Dakota All-Time Football Team. He was 5th team All-American running back in 1949. Because of his talent on the field, Don was heavily recruited by many colleges. He received a scholarship from the University of Nebraska and started as a running back in 1951. Don later joined the NSU football team and helped lead the team to an undefeated season in 1953. He was named to the NSU Hall of Fame in 1979. Don was instrumental in starting the wrestling team at NSU.

Don’s faith was an integral part of his life. He was a devoted member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he served as President of the church council, numerous committees, ministerial outreach programs and as a volunteer wherever needed. He also served his community and was active in the Lion’s Club where he served as District Governor for South Dakota. He was on the board at Bethesda, was active in the Retired Teachers Association and was President for AARP in South Dakota where he received the Andrus Award in 2003. Don was an avid fan of University of Nebraska and the Minnesota Twins. He loved his family and always looked forward to time spent with his granddaughters and great grandson.

Grateful for having shared Don’s life are his son, Doug (Kim) Vogt, Aberdeen, daughter, Victoria (Duane) Hurley, Milford, IA, granddaughters, Jessica (Eric) Schable and Rebecca Hurley, great grandson, Aiden Schable, brothers, Herb (Janet) Vogt, Alfred, ME, Bill (Jean) Vogt, Kalispell, MT, and Jim (Judy) Vogt, Powell, WY, and many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta on March 18, 2002, his parents, and his sister, Darlene Vogt.

The family prefers memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

EDWARD "ED" HOFF, JR.

Memorial service for Edward “Ed” Hoff Jr., 87, Aberdeen will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen. Dave Graf will officiate. Private family interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Ed died on Friday, March 16, 2012 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Edward Hoff Jr., son of Edward and Martha (Heupel) Hoff Sr. was born on June 30, 1924 in Eureka, SD. This is the area where he was raised and attended school, graduating from Eureka High School. Ed enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 and served with the 574th Air Sig as a radar operator in the Philippines and New Guinea. Following his honorable discharge in 1946 he began working in Aberdeen at Aberdeen Block Company where he became manager.

Ed was united in marriage to Marion Weisz in Aberdeen. This is where the couple made their home and raised their two children. In 1966, Ed went to work for House of Glass where he worked as a sales rep until his retirement in 1987. They remained in Aberdeen and also enjoyed traveling south in the winter to visit their son.

Ed was a member of Faith United Methodist Church where he served as usher and trustee. He was an avid bowler and was active in many bowling leagues for 50 years where he won many awards and trophies including the first Dihl Hasz Sportsmanship Trophy.

Grateful for having shared Ed’s life are one son, Rick (Cathy) Hoff, Wylie, TX; one daughter, Debbie (Warren) Hunstad, Aberdeen; five grandchildren, Kelly Hoff Kovaric, Eric Hoff, Jason Hoff, Scott Hunstad and Tara Hunstad, six great grandchildren, one sister, Adeline Goehring, Aberdeen; one brother, Dallas Hoff, Las Vegas, NV; and special friend Velma Scheid.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife Marion Hoff, parents Edward and Martha Hoff Sr., two brothers and one sister.

GARY BEBO

Memorial service for Gary Bebo, 71, Cresbard will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the United Methodist Church, Cresbard. Pastor Julie Nygard officiating. At his request his body was cremated. Private inurnment will be in the Cresbard Cemetery. Gary died on Thursday, March 15 in Faulkton.

A time to remember Gary’s life will be Monday, March 19 from 1:00-7:00 pm with family present from 5:00-7:00 and a prayer service at 7:00 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

In lieu of flowers family prefers memorials.

Gary Andrew Bebo was born March 20, 1940 at Turton, SD to John and Alphena (Anderson) Bebo. He grew up in the Mellette area and later worked on the Oahe Dam in Pierre where he met his wife Shirley. They were united in marriage on September 15, 1961 in Pierre.

Gary and Shirley spent six years in Tucson, AZ but Gary always wanted to come home to South Dakota. They returned home where Gary helped his father on the family farm prior to farming on his own. Several years later he started his career as a truck driver.

Gary loved trucking, his customers as well as all the wonderful people he met along the way. He trucked until his health would no longer allow it. Gary spent seven years in a wheelchair. He loved going to the local coffee shop in his electric wheelchair. That was the highlight of every day, regardless of hail, sleet or blizzards. His coffee shop friends always watched out for him to be sure he got there and got home.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Shirley Bebo of Cresbard; his daughter, Annie (Marvin Rose) Bebo of Aberdeen; extended family Shawn and Shani Crane and family; two brothers, Richard (Darla) and Ronald (Faye) Bebo; one sister, Joyce (Maynard) Fortin; many nieces, nephews and cousins and his beloved cat Makani

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alphena Bebo; step mother, Clara Bebo; one son, Robert Bebo and one brother, Robert Bebo.

Joseph Leo Shell, 10, Apache Junction, AZ, formerly of Aberdeen died Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at Apache Junction, AZ.

Bob Shell, Jr., 38, Apache Junction, AZ, formerly of Aberdeen died Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at Apache Junction, AZ.

EMIL KOLB

Funeral services for Emil Kolb, 97, Aberdeen, formerly of Leola are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at St. James Lutheran Church, Leola, Pastor Gayler Korsmo officiating. Burial: Green Mound Cemetery, Leola. Emil died Sunday, March 11, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation: 1-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, with a prayer service at 5 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Emil Kolb was born November 9, 1914 to Jacob and Lydia (Rau) Kolb at Timber Lake, SD. He moved with his parents from Timber Lake to south of Long Lake, SD in 1921 with a 1912 International truck that had hard tires. In 1930, he moved with his parents north of Leola where he worked for numerous farmers. He also worked for the Public Works Administration.

Emil married Adeline Kolb on June 24, 1937 at Sisseton, SD. In 1941 they moved to Tulare, SD where he worked for Henry Blume. In the fall of 1943, he moved with his wife and young family back to Leola where he purchased a farm three miles east and one half mile south of Leola. He resided there until May of 2011 when they moved to the Primrose Cottages in Aberdeen.

Emil was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church. He also served on the Leola Township Board and as a director for FHA in the Leola District. Farming was always an important part of Emil’s life. He loved driving tractors, looking at tractor books and Black Angus cattle. Emil enjoyed horses and farmed with them for a number of years. Emil’s greatest joy came from his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Emil’s life are his wife, Adeline, Aberdeen, children, Duane (Aileen) Kolb, Leola, Darlene (Merle) Heupel, Aberdeen, and Richard (Susan) Kolb, Leola, grandchildren, Kevin Kolb, and Ann Erdmann, great grandchildren, Tyler Kolb, Logan Kolb, Ethan Kolb and Dawson Erdmann, brother, Otto Kolb, Leola, and sisters, Lydia Bertsch, Novato, CA and Emilia Hofwolt, Ft. Pierre, SD.

Emil was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Erin Kolb, three brothers and five sisters.

LORI ANN YOUNG

The memorial service for Lori Ann Young, 48, Aberdeen, is 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2012 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen. Lori passed away Thursday, March 8, 2012 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital at Aberdeen.

A time to share with Lori’s family will from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, March 11th, with a prayer service at 5 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Lori Ann Allbee was born on October 8, 1963 to Ernest and Doris (Locken) Allbee in Aberdeen. She grew up and attended school in Aberdeen, graduating from Central High School in 1981. She then attended Northern State University where she earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Business in 1985. Lori worked at Kesslers while attending both high school and college.

On June 1, 1985, Lori married Harlan Young at Aberdeen. She began work for the Farm Service Agency (FSA) in 1988 and was employed there until the time of her death.

While Lori had many passions, her family and friends came first. Lori was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She was also active in the community and was a member of Great Plains Outdoorsman. Lori enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid trap shooter. She enjoyed tending her flower garden and loved the outdoors. Her Golden Retriever, Bob, held a special place in her heart.

Grateful for having shared Lori’s life are her husband, Harlan, Aberdeen, two sons, Eric Young, Blytheville, AR, and Lucas Young, Birmingham, AL, her mother, Doris Allbee, Aberdeen, three brothers, Gary (Dena) Allbee, St. Michael, MN, Neal Allbee, Aberdeen, and Brian Allbee, Aberdeen, her sister-in-law, Nancy (Charlie) Whittlesey, St. Louis Park, MN, her brother-in-law, Donald Young, Aberdeen, and six nieces and nephews, Mike Allbee, Steve Allbee, Kirsten Bertsch, Elizabeth Whittlesey, Claire Whittlesey and Mason Young.

Lori was preceded in death by her father, Ernest and her nephew, Ross Allbee.

SCOTT C. CRAIG

The funeral service for Scott C. Craig, 45, Aberdeen will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 8, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Scott died Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Avera St. Luke’s, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, March 7, at the funeral home.

Scott Clarence Craig was born on February 21, 1967 to Dayle Keith and Blanche (Bonn) Craig at Aberdeen, SD. He grew up on a farm near Groton and was baptized and confirmed at the Groton United Methodist Church. He was active in the Lazy Farmers

4-H club. Scott attended Groton schools and graduated from Groton High School. After graduating, Scott worked for Funk Custom Combining for a few years and then worked on a farm near Artesian.

On May 21, 1989, Scott married Kathleen Schwingler at Aberdeen. Scott worked for Wolken’s Trucking out of Groton and then worked for several farmers near Groton.

Scott was a member of Groton United Methodist Church. He had an excellent sense of humor. He enjoyed hunting, especially hunting deer, and fishing. They spent many days fishing at Tacoma Park. Scott and Kathleen kept a garden together. His pets were special to Scott and he liked to play with his pets, Puggy, Bobbie Jo and Cody. Scott loved children and spending time with his family.

Grateful for having shared Scott’s life are his wife, Kathleen, Aberdeen, two step-daughters, Becky (LeRoy) Aman and their children, Jonathan, Michael and Carissa Aman of Hosmer, and Holly Strobel and her daughter Emily Strobel of Eureka, two brothers, Gary (Teri) Craig, Houston, TX, Roger (Jenny) Craig, Alexandria, SD, three sisters, Vicki (Les) Hovrud, Madison, SD, Sandy Knudson, Aberdeen, and Becky (Todd) Sapp, Alexandria, SD, and many nieces, and nephews.

Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Dayle and Blanche and his grandparents.

EVA STABLER

The funeral service for Eva Stabler, 93, Aberdeen will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 12, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Eva died Thursday, March 1, at Primrose Place Assisted Living.

Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, March 11, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home 1111 S. Main St.

Eva Schmidt was born on January 17, 1919 to Peter S. and Eva (Fuehrer) Schmidt at their home in rural Campbell County, SD. She grew up there and received her education at rural school. Eva was baptized and confirmed at the Artas Reformed Church.

On June 28, 1942, Eva married Albert Stabler at Eureka, SD. Together they farmed in the Eureka area and were members of the Zion Lutheran Church, Eureka. In August of 1992 they moved into Aberdeen. Albert died on March 23, 1997 and Eva continued to make Aberdeen her home. She lived on her own until September of 2008 when she moved to Primrose Place.

Eva was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. She was always a hard worker, both helping with the farm work and keeping her house immaculate. She enjoyed gardening and embroidering when she was able and was a great cook. Her grandchildren often mention her delicious German vegetable soup and kuchen. Eva was a gracious host with a servant’s heart. She had a great memory and liked watching game shows, keeping up with the current news and always followed the local weather. Family was very important to her and she loved time spent with them.

Grateful for having shared Eva’s life were her daughter, JoAnne (Arnie) Mehlhoff, grandchildren, Mark (Karla) Mehlhoff and Monte (Becky) Mehlhoff, great grandchildren, Meghan, Mason, Kaden, Kyler, Alyson, and Joshua Mehlhoff, all of Aberdeen, one sister, Helen Tichota, Aberdeen and one brother, Harvey (Gladys) Schmidt, Roseville, CA.

Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, parents, Peter and Eva, sisters, Christine Wacker, Lydia Berreth, Emma Koth and Ida Nitschke and her brother Peter P. Schmidt.

DIANNE MARY (GOLDIN) CRAFT

Dianne Mary (Goldin) Craft, 83, Mellette died Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements: Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Dianne Mary Deloy was born December 30, 1928 to Lester and Ruth (Couch) Deloy at home in Mellette. She grew up and attended school there graduating from Mellette High School. Dianne went on to Northern State Teacher’s College and earned her two year Teacher’s Certificate. She taught at country schools near Northville for a few years.

On January 1, 1948, Dianne married Leland Goldin at home in Mellette. They continued to make Mellette their home. Leland died in August of 2002.

Dianne stayed in Mellette and married Rollin “Rollie” Craft on February 12, 1996. Dianne was a lifetime member of Northwestern Methodist Church. She was active in the Eastern Star and Grand Chapter. Dianne was a past Matron in Eastern Star. She was a member of Extension Club where she was very active for many years. She was also active in the Senior Citizen’s Center and served as secretary. When she was younger, Dianne enjoyed camping and fishing with her family. She was also an avid flower and vegetable gardener. Dianne dedicated her life to caring for others. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

Grateful for having shared Dianne’s life are her husband, Rollie Craft, Mellette, two daughters, Melinda (Roger) Redman, Maroa, IL, and Debra (Matt) Wise, Mellette, seven grandchildren, Mark Buechler Jeremy Mikuska, Jennifer Collins, Jake Collins, Ashly Wise, Brook Wise, and Doris Wise, nine great grandchildren, Chloe, Kia, and Aubrey Mikuska, Micah and Ariona Collins, Ashlynn, Mason and Malachi LaHoe, and Lillian Collins, her sister, Joanne (Garold) Nesthus, Long Beach, CA, two brothers, Al Deloy, Mellette, and Jim (Carolyn) Deloy, Belle Fourche, SD.

Dianne was preceded in death by her husband, Leland Goldin, her parents, grandson, Jack Collins, granddaughter, Jessica Buechler, brother, Ronnie Deloy, infant brother, Allen Deloy and sister-in-law, Marilyn Deloy.
