She could often be found reading to her children, sharing her love of books with them. Her love of teaching through reading was not limited to her children. She taught as Librarian, at both Roncalli Senior High and Lincoln Elementary as well as being an active volunteer in her children’s education at Aberdeen Christian. Friends and family of Moe appreciated her gentle character and her ability to enjoy peaceful, beautiful and simple things in life that made her laugh. Much joy was found as she spent time sewing and quilting. Much beauty can still be found in her well manicured flower garden. The outstanding beauty in Maureen’s life was her love and dedication to serving her Savior, Jesus Christ. This relationship with Christ is what gave her the grace and strength to fight her battle with breast cancer. Maureen concluded her self-written cancer story with these words:

“I was trying to handle it by myself. Cancer cannot be handled alone. Nor can it be handled by our power. I needed to let go and let God. After quiet reflection and a word or two from God, I realized that God has promised to be with me and help me. Isaiah 41:13 ‘for I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.’ You cannot beat that!!!

My cancer has been a catalyst for growing emotionally and spiritually for me. I thank God for each day he gives me here on earth but look forward to being with Him after my earthly life is done. In the mean time His grace is sufficient for each day.”

Grateful for having shared Maureen’s life are her husband, Wendell, three children, Samuel, Emma and Job Niewenhuis, all of Aberdeen, her mother, Helaine Theisen, Hot Springs, SD, two brothers, John (Shelli) Theisen, Winter Park, FL, Chris (Bern) Theisen, Bend, OR, four sisters, Peggy (Roger) Exum, Clinton, TN, Colleen (Craig) Fuhs, Burnsville, MN, Mary (Tom) Tschetter, Waxhaw, NC and Terese (Dan) Leuchen, Windsor, CO, and many nieces and nephews.
