JOSEPH LEO SHELL

The memorial service for Joseph Shell, 10, of Apache Junction, AZ and formerly of Aberdeen, will be 12:00 pm, Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Family Worship Center, 435 N Highway 281, Aberdeen. Pastor Robert Lockhart officiating. Inurnment will be in the Frederick Cemetery. Joseph died March 6, 2012 in Apache Junction.

A time of remembrance will be from 1-5 pm, Friday, April 13 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials

Joseph Leo Shell was born on January 17, 2002 at Aberdeen, SD to Robert & Darlene (Napton) Shell, Jr. He attended school in Aberdeen and Frederick and in August, 2011, Joseph and Bob moved to Apache Junction, AZ.

Joseph especially loved his sister, Nina. He enjoyed working on his grandpa’s farm. He attended the Boy’s & Girl’s Clubs in Aberdeen and Arizona where he played soccer. Joseph’s favorite things were riding his bike, playing with his cousins and playing baseball in Frederick.

Grateful for having shared Joseph’s life are his mother, Darlene Napton, sister, Allena, grandparents, Robert & Mary Shell, Sr., Darrel and Marjo Napton, Marilynn Big Eagle and Larry Wermers; uncles and aunts, Mike Rouse, Paul Rouse, Travis Napton, Daniel Napton, Leah Rouse, Claressa Big Eagle, Joni Napton, Kimberly Odish, Donald Vanden, Linda Randolph and their families.

Preceding him in death are his father, Robert Shell, Jr., and grandmother Debra Jarman.

ROBERT “BOB” SHELL, JR.

The memorial service for Robert Shell, 38, of Apache Junction, AZ and formerly of Aberdeen, will be 12:00 pm, Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Family Worship Center, 435 N Highway 281, Aberdeen. Robert “Bob” Shell, Jr. was born on June 27, 1973 at Dover, DE to Robert & Debra (Jarman) Shell, Sr. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. He worked at a café in Delaware and later moved to North Carolina. On January 26, 2001 he married Darlene Napton at Jefferson, NC. In 2001 they moved to Aberdeen where he worked at Culvers and Dakota Unlimited. In August, 2011, Bob moved to Apache Junction, AZ.

Robert especially loved his children, Joseph & Nina. He enjoyed coaching soccer umpiring baseball and wrestling. As a result of his health failing he met many friends while going through dialysis.

Every community Bob graced with his outgoing charisma has been truly blessed. Bob enjoyed life to the fullest extent. Towards the end of his life he came to terms with his health procedures to maintain his life.

Grateful for having shared Bob’s life are his daughter, Allena, Darlene Napton, Parents, Robert & Mary Shell, Sr, Kimberly Odish, Donald Vanden, Linda Randolph and families; extended family, Darrel and Marjo Napton, Marilynn Big Eagle and Larry Wermer, Mike Rouse, Paul Rouse, Travis Napton, Daniel Napton, Leah Rouse, Claressa Big Eagle, Joni Napton and families.

Preceding him in death are his mother, Debra Jarman, his son, Joseph Shell brother, Rickey and his daughter Angel.

JOHN GILES BOWMAN

The memorial service for John Giles Bowman, 35, of Barnard, SD will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 12, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street, Aberdeen, Pastor David Phillips officiating. John died Sunday, April 8, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

John Giles Bowman was born on June 11, 1976 at Fort Braggs, CA to Linda (Blair) Weber. As a small child the family moved to Newton, IA where he grew up and attended school. On September 17, 2004 he married Mandy Cruse in Aberdeen. They moved to Houston, TX where he worked for X Imports. They moved to Barnard in 2006 where he owned and operated Premier Paint and Empire Builders until the time of his death.

John was a member of the First Baptist Church. John put a lot of time into breeding and showing pit-bulls. He enjoyed racing, motorcycles, fishing and hunting, but above all, he loved spending time with his wife and children.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Mandy; his children, Alex, Ryder, Talia and Jaxon Bowman; his mother, Linda (Curtis) Weber and sister, Jessica (Bryan) Kriech.

DONALD “DON” MOORHEAD

The funeral service for Don Moorhead 82, of Aberdeen will be at 1pm, Wednesday, April 11th, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, with Pastor Gary Wileman officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery following the service. Don went to heaven on Saturday, April 7th, 2012.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 11th, from 8am until the time of the service, at Spitzer-Miller, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, SD.

Don Moorhead was born August 8th, 1929, to Fred Denver and Opal Moorhead in Omaha, Neb. Don moved to Redfield in 1933 where he resided until moving to Aberdeen in 1974. Before retiring in 1994, Don worked at the Sheraton Motor Inn, Tiffany Laundry, ATC (woodshop & custodial) and Godfathers Pizza. Don resided in his own apartment until Aug. 2009, when he moved to a retirement home at 702 S. Kline.

Don had a strong faith in God and a wonderful church family at First Assembly of God in Aberdeen. He had a great love for music and taught himself to play the harmonica and organ. He knew many hymns and Christmas songs and was eager to share them either by playing and/or singing them. He most often had his harmonica in his pocket.

Don rode his 3-wheeled bike up until age 79. He loved being outside. He spent many hours at the train yard watching the trains. Don made many friends in the community. He would visit his “Main Street” friends on a daily basis, stopping to say “Hi” or helping them with errands, etc. Don also enjoyed bowling, swimming, boating, attending car races, the circus, eating at Pizza Ranch and celebrating his birthday! He could be heard saying “I sure don’t look that old do I!”

Don will greatly be missed by his housemates and the many friends that have become his family throughout the years.

VIOLA “OLE” ALVINA JASMER

The funeral service for Viola “Ole” Jasmer, 94, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Nathan Henschen and Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Viola died Friday, April 6, 2012 at Manor Care Health Services, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m., Monday, April 9 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Viola Alvina Hoeft was born on September 25, 1917 to Julius and Emlia (Jasmer) Hoeft at Leola, SD. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. As a young lady she worked on the family farm until she was married to Clarence Jasmer on September 7, 1939 at Baker, MT. They made their first home and farmed southwest of Leola until 1948 when they moved into Leola. In March, 1954, the family moved to Aberdeen. She worked part-time for Gambles until she became employed at Coast to Coast where she worked until she retired in 1988. Viola was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Viola’s life are her sister-in-law, Dolores Klipfel, Lodi, CA, nephews, Raymond (Rita) Hoeft, Puyallup, WA, Robert (Joan) Hoeft, Yakima, WA, Jerry (Jeanette) Jasmer, New Hope, MN, Ron (Millie) Wacker, Killeen, TX, nieces, Doris Janssen, Vancouver, WA, Lila Mae Nelson, Mobridge, SD, Karen (Ray) Mehlhoff, Aberdeen, Shirley (John) Fishback, Aberdeen, Arlyce DeHoet, Columbia, SD, Nancy (Larry) Vietmeier, Columbia, SD, Sharon (Leonard) Schaffer, Aberdeen, and Bonnie (Fred) Suurmeyer, Sisseton, SD and her Godchild, Carol Podoll.

Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, parents, Julius and Emlia, two sons, Gary and James Jasmer, her daughter, Judith Marie Jasmer, three brothers and seven sisters, nieces and nephews, Gerald Hoeft, Elenor Lapka, Joanne Baer, Dean Krein and June Kradle.

Honorary casket bearers will be Margaret “Molly” Gunderson, Eldora Burckhard, Donna Howell, Mavis Breitag, Cliff Moffenbier and Tootie Podoll. Casket bearers will be Johnny Fishback, Howard Anderson, Brian Mays, Jerry Jasmer, Larry Vietmeier and Ron Gunderson.

DONALD NELMER CARLSON

The funeral service for Donald Nelmer Carlson, 79, of Aberdeen, will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 13, 2012, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Cemetery, Bryant, SD. Donald died Friday, April 6, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, April 12, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Donald Nelmer Carlson was born on April 21, 1932 to Nelmer and Nora (Brekke) Carlson at Vienna, SD. He grew up and attended school and farmed in the Vienna, Bryant and Willow Lake area.

On June 24, 1973 Donald married Madeline Paulson at Skudesnes Lutheran Church of rural Pierpont, SD. They made Aberdeen their home. Donald worked at the south sale barn and Brown County Courthouse. He retired due to health problems that began when he had polio at the age of 16. Donald spent his retirement watching his children and grandchildren grow up.

Donald was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. He enjoyed reading, playing cards on the computer and keeping up with the news on Keloland. Donald was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan, although they sometimes frustrated him. Donald loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities.

Grateful for having shared Donald’s life are his wife, Madeline, Aberdeen, two sons, Paul (Nicole) Carlson and their children, Kaine and Devon, of Bakersfield, CA, and Rob (Danielle) Carlson and their children, Logan, Hailea, Avery and Isabella, of Aberdeen, his sister, Carolyn Jorgensen, aunt, Selma Froke and nieces and nephews.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Nelmer and Nora Carlson.

ALMA JEAN BENDER

The funeral service for Alma Bender, 93, of Aberdeen, will be 9:30 a.m., Monday, April 9, 2012 at First Assembly of God, with Pastor Gary Wileman officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Alma died Monday, April 2, 2012 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation is 3-7 p.m., Sunday, April 8, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home 1111 S. Main St.

Alma Jean Delzer was born January 21, 1919 to Henry and Margaretha (Kreug) Delzer in Ashley, ND. She grew up around the Ashley area where they lived on a farm. In 1941 she married Herman Bender at Ashley, ND. They moved to Stockton, CA where they lived before moving back to Ashley, ND in 1947. In 1949 they moved to Aberdeen where they made their home and raised two sons. Alma was employed for 19 years at the Aberdeen YMCA. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church of Aberdeen, where she served in the women and prayer ministries and as a Sunday school teacher,

Her family is comforted by memories of “Granny” preparing amazing German dishes, especially Kuchen, the many blankets she lovingly crocheted and her love for her Savior.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Dale (Kathlyn) Bender, Sierra Vista, AZ; and two granddaughters, Mrs. Renee Lindberg (and her husband, T.J. Lindberg), Miami, FL, and Rhonda Bender, Tacoma, WA; her great-grandchildren, Owen, Paige and Mason Lindberg; and her sister, Florence Smith, Medford, OR.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Margaretha Delzer; former husband, Herman Bender; son, Rodney Bender; grandson, Randal Bender; sisters, Ida, Lydia, Ella; and brothers, Edward and William.

CHESTER L. FISCHER

The memorial service for Chester Lee Fischer, 68, of Columbia, will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Chester died Sunday, April 1, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation is 2:00-7:00 p.m., with family present from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home 1111 S. Main St.

Chester Lee Fischer was born on July 21, 1943 in Artas, SD to Christ P. and Bertha (Heiser) Fischer. As a young boy the family moved to Aberdeen where he grew up and attended school. On July 20, 1960 he entered the US Navy and was honorably discharged on July 20, 1964. On September 30, 1964 he married Sharon Arlt at Aberdeen, SD. They made their home in Aberdeen where he worked for the Aberdeen Fire Department until 1969. They moved to Lodi, CA where he worked for Pure Sausage and Meat Processing and also started Chet Taxidermy in 1971. In 1974 they moved the business to Aberdeen and he also worked at the Brown County Courthouse until he was forced to retire due to his health.

Chester was a member of First Baptist Church. He loved hunting and fishing. He really enjoyed spending time with his family.

Grateful for having shared Chester’s life are his wife, Sharon Fischer, children, Shauna (Michael) Noonan, Troy (Alison) Fischer, Renae (Brad) Fischer, Brian (Lisa) Fischer, grandchildren, Jamie Reese, Chelsie Reese, Whitney Reese, Bryce Fischer, Tiffany (TJ) May, Tyler Fischer, Mikala Fischer, great grandchildren, Lilly Reese and Mackenzy Fischer, brother, William (Edna) Fischer and sister, Lorraine Moody.

Chester is preceded in death by his parents, Christ and Bertha Fischer, granddaughter, Taylor Fischer, sisters, Amelia Fisher, Tillie Germer, Ella Fisher, Bertha Hoaldly, Edna Sund and Hilda Boulais.

VIRGINIA THELEN

The funeral service for Virginia Thelen, 86, of Aberdeen, formerly Mansfield, is 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 5, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church, Mansfield, with Pastor Jon Damaska officiating. Burial at Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen. Virginia died Saturday, March 31, at her home in Aberdeen.

Visitation: 1:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, with family present from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home 1111 S. Main St.

Virginia Maxine Dull was born on July 28, 1925 to Ward and Bess (Jarrett) Dull at Aberdeen, SD. She was the eighth of ten children in the family and grew up and attended school in the area. Virginia graduated from Brentford High School in 1943 and went on to receive her Teacher’s Certificate from Northern. She then taught country school for a year.

On May 27, 1944, Virginia married Daldon Thelen at Mobridge, SD. They made their home on a farm near Mansfield. Daldon passed away on February 19, 1992. Virginia continued to make Mansfield her home until moving to Primrose Apartments in 1998.

Virginia was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Mansfield. She served as the church treasurer for many years. She also was active in Ladies Aide where she made many quilts and church banners over the years. When they were younger, Virginia and Daldon enjoyed playing cards with their friends in Mansfield. Virginia played a major role in planning the Mansfield Centennial. Virginia loved to travel. They traveled throughout much of the US, Europe, Australia, and Hawaii. One of her favorite family trips was when they drove to Alaska. Virginia loved her family. She held a special place in her heart for babies and little children.

Grateful for having shared Virginia’s life are her daughter, Pamela (Glenn) Handke, Raymond, SD, son, R. John (Toye) Thelen, Mansfield, grandchildren, Michelle (Steve) Patterson and Michael (Julie) Thelen, great grandchildren, Johnathan, Elizabeth, and Samantha Thelen, sister, Joanne Cooper, Fallon, NV, and many nieces and nephews.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Daldon, parents, Ward and Bess, sisters, Loverne Berreth, Frances Becker, Phyllis Vanderfeen, L. Jean Brown and Carol Nilsson, and brothers, Charles, Clifton and Russell Dull.

SAMUEL ERIC SAUERWEIN

Samuel Eric Sauerwein, infant son of Corey and Jennifer Sauerwein, Aberdeen went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 28, 2012. Private family services will be held on a later date. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.
