SR. CAROL QUINN

Sister Carol Quinn, 68, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died May 12, 2012 in Sioux Falls, SD.

Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Carol will be Thursday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD. A Scriptural Wake service will be Wednesday, May 16 at 7:00 p.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation was from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Reverend Charles Cimpl will be celebrant and homilist assisted by Reverend Michael Kelly.

Burial was at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S Main Street, in charge of arrangements.

Carol was born July 16, 1943 Bridgewater, SD to Margaret (Detterman) and Raymond Quinn. She graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1961 and attended Presentation Jr. College 1961-1962. Carol entered Presentation Convent August 10, 1962 and made her first profession of vows August 10, 1965, She graduated from Marquette University, Milwaukee in 1967 with a Bachelor degree in History Education and did graduate studies in Applied Theology at the Franciscan School of Theology, Berkeley, CA 1988-1990.

Sister Carol (once known as Sister Kevin) taught at Roncalli Jr. High School from 1967-1971. In 1971 she went to Chicago where she helped start the Loretto Adult Education Center, an alternative high school for adults and children. She became the administrator there where she ministered until 1980. Sister Carol came to Presentation College as Director of Admissions 1980 until 1988. From 1990 until 1995 she ministered as Pastoral Assistant at Immaculate Conception Parish, Sacramento, CA and Pastoral Administrator at, Ghant, MN (1995-2000). For two years, 2000-2002, Sister Carol worked in St. Paul, MN as an Advocate for Mothers and Children. As Resident assistant for “New Start” in Sioux Falls, SD she was an ESL instructor merging cultures through her Volunteers of America Even Start ministry where she taught English to Hispanic and African immigrants (2002-2007). Through her teaching ministry, Sister Carol empowered the people she served every day as she fostered knowledge and understanding in the once-strangers who now call America their home. Sister reached out to pregnant teens and adults, teaching them life skills and influencing them in making choices to improve their future.

Sister Carol is survived by her community family of Presentation Sisters, three sisters, Rose Deleo, Claredon Hills, IL, Joan Schacht, Rapid City, SD, Louise Quinn, St. Paul, MN and four brothers, Gene, Rapid City, SD, Gerry, Sioux Falls, SD, Robert, Hill City, SD, and Jim, Sturgis, SD.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Raymond Quinn, and a sister, Marlene.

Casket bearers will be brothers and nephews.

DELBERT ARTHUR HILLEN

Memorial service for Dr. Delbert Arthur Hillen, 80, Sarasota, FL and formerly of Aberdeen will be 10:00 am, Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen. Pastor Mark Erhmantraut officiating. Inurnment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Columbia, SD. Del died on April 25, 2012 in Sarasota.

Visitation will be from 1:00-7:00 pm, Monday, May 21, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

Delbert Arthur Hillen, son of Henry and Ida Mae (Reisdorph) Hillen was born on December 30, 1931 in Aberdeen. He was raised on a farm and attended school in the Houghton, SD area. From 1950 through 1953 Del taught at several rural schools in Brown County. Later he taught in Roslyn, SD.

Del attended Northern State University in Aberdeen where he received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees, graduating in 1958. Del was selected by the Department of Defense as an educator and was stationed at Keflavik Air Force Base in Iceland. He was later transferred to the Rhein Main Air Force Base in Germany and also spent time in the Philippines as well as Tokyo. In 1968, Del completed his PhD in counseling and psychology. He remained overseas for several years working in London and later returning to Germany.

In 1974 Del accepted an assignment to the Navy Depot in Scotia, New York. This is where he conducted research in military testing and training and traveled extensively to military bases throughout the United States. During this time Del also worked as a visiting professor for the University of Southern California in ergonomics and communication in their graduate program in the US, Europe and Asia. Del retired to Florida in 1986 and worked part time for the University of Southern California until 1993 when he fully retired.

Del was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sarasota. During his retirement he volunteered countless hours at his church, local hospice facilities, and the Sarasota Opera Guild and Association as a host and translator. Del was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and served as organist for the Masonic Bodies on 3 continents. Masonic committal service to follow by Maurice E. Webb.

Grateful for having shared Del’s life are his sister, Mareta Hormann and nephew Dan (Ramona) Hormann all of Aberdeen.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

KENNETH JAY MINDT

Memorial service for Kenneth Jay Mindt, 37, Aberdeen will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 14, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating.

Kenneth died Monday, May 7, 2012 at the Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Kenneth Jay Mindt was born November 22, 1974 to Clarence & Connie (Barth) Mindt, in Hartford, WI.

When he was 2 years old they moved to California where he enjoyed playing basketball, soccer and football and received his education.

Following graduation from Lodi High School in 1992 he attended Hartsog Trade School in Lodi for HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning).

In 2001 Kenneth moved to Aberdeen and worked for Preston’s Home Improvement and Repair.

He owned and operated Mindt’s Remodel until his health deteriorated and he was no longer able to work.

He valiantly fought his battle with diabetes for 27 years.

He enjoyed many trades such as plumbing and home remodeling.

He had a broad range of interests that included fishing, hunting and gardening, photography, nature, art, music, reading and cooking.

He enjoyed carpentry too, and had recently helped lay hardwood floors in his brother’s home and built a deck for his family to enjoy.

Foremost, Kenneth had a passion for his family, he loved spending time with his niece and nephew and three precious god-daughters.

Grateful for having shared Kenneth’s life are his mother, Connie Barth Mindt, Aberdeen, father, Clarence Mindt, Stockton, CA, brother, Christopher (Crystal) Mindt, Aberdeen, sister, Jennifer Mindt (Jeff Skarles), Lodi, CA, niece, Aschlie Mindt, Aberdeen, nephew, Nathan Skarles, Lodi, CA, grandmother, Ellina Barth, Aberdeen, special friend, Michelle Ramos, and three god-daughters, Sachelle, Katana, and Lilka, all from Aberdeen.

Preceding Kenneth in death are his grandparents, Walter and Martha Mindt, and Walter Barth.

SISTER FRANCELLE CLARKE

Sister Francelle Clarke, 84, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died May 8, 2012 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.

A Memorial Mass for Sister Francelle will be Saturday, May 12 at 2:00 p.m., in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD.

Reverend William Hamak is the celebrant and homilist.

A Scriptural Wake service will be May 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

Helen was born October 14, 1927 to Mary Ellen (McDonald) and Francis Xavier Clarke in Ethan, SD.

She graduated from Ethan High School in 1945 and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Psychology from Northern State University in 1965.

She received a Master’s Degree in Education and Counseling from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI.

Helen entered Presentation Convent September 8, 1948 and made her first profession of vows on August 10, 1951.

Sister Francelle taught elementary grades in Milbank, Sioux Falls, and Jefferson.

She was appointed principal of Holy Family School, Mitchell, SD 1968-1971, and at St. Mary’s School, Willmar, MN.

For twenty-six years, 1971-1997, Sister Francelle was professor of psychology, counselor and Director of Student Activities at Presentation College, Aberdeen, SD.

In 1977, Sister launched the first Search for Christian Maturity Program at Presentation for the young people in the diocese of Sioux Falls, SD.

For the next twenty years, she served as Coordinator of the program.

Sister was also Vocation and Postulant Director for the Presentation Sisters.

In 1966, she was elected the first president of the Sister’s Senate in the Diocese of Sioux Falls.

For seven years, she was involved in a healing ministry for women Victims of Torture from Africa, in St. Paul, MN.

She was active in the Pro-Life ministry.

Sister Francelle volunteered at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital and served Meals on Wheels from 2007 to 2012.

Sister requested that her body be donated to the University of South Dakota for science research.

She wrote: “If my eyes could be used to help someone to see the beauty of the world,

If my ears could help someone to hear the sweet sound of a bird,

Or if my heart could help another to keep on loving, I would be honored.

If donating my body to science would help another to enjoy a better life,

I would consider it a privilege.”

Sister Francelle is survived by her community of Presentation Sisters, two sisters, Rose Ann Sachse, Leavenworth, KS, Angela Johansen, Papillion, NE, one brother George Clarke and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Sister Margaret Mary Clarke, PBVM and one brother, Tom Clarke.

Request is that memorials be sent to St. Vincent DePaul or the Salvation Army in any city.

EUGENE WALTER HORMANN

Funeral service for Eugene Walter Hormann, 80, Aberdeen will be 10:00 am, Tuesday, May 15, 2012 in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Aberdeen.

Pastor Neil Hannahs officiating. Burial following in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24.

Eugene died on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 pm, Monday, May 14, 2012 in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Eugene Walter Hormann, son of Ernest and Nora (Wolter) Hormann was born on December 14, 1931 in Aberdeen, SD.

He joined the United States Army on June 17, 1953 and served during the Korean War.

Eugene received his honorable discharge in June of 1965.

He was united in marriage to Mareta Hillen on July 5, 1957 in Redfield, SD.

To this union one son Dan was born in 1960.

For many years Eugene worked for the United States Postal Service loading and unloading trucks.

Grateful for having shared Eugene’s life are his wife Mareta Hormann of Aberdeen, one son Dan (Ramona) Hormann of Aberdeen, grandchildren Jennifer, Andrew and Elizabeth and siblings Marvis, Lyle, Leota, Loretta and Violet.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Lynford, Merle, Donald and Kenneth.

STEVEN JOHN SERR

Service for Steven John Serr, 64, Leola, formerly of Eureka will be 10:30 am, Thursday, May 10, 2012 at the Eureka Reformed Church.

Rev. Richard Stetler officiating.

Burial in the Eureka City Cemetery. Steve died Saturday, May 5, 2012 in Aberdeen.

Visitation is from 3:00-7:00 pm, Wednesday, May 9 at the church in Eureka.

Steven John Serr, son of Art and Elaine (Meidinger) Serr was born on April 8, 1948 in Eureka.

This is the area where he was raised and attended school graduating from Eureka High School in 1966.

He attended Northern State University in Aberdeen where he received his degree in music education.

He was employed at the Java Public School in Java, SD where he served as their music instructor until 1978.

At this time Steve returned to Northern State University earning a second degree in business administration.

Steve was elected McPherson County Auditor in 1983, a job which he was committed to and held until the time of his death.

For many years Steve also did accounting work for several businesses in Leola and Eureka.

Since 2008 he also worked for the National Weather Service as the official cooperative weather observer for Leola.

Steve had a passion for music.

Over the years he directed numerous church choirs in surrounding communities and served as director of the Long Lake Community Band.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching football and baseball games in his free time.

He will be remembered by many as the voice behind the microphone at the Eureka Lakeside Ballpark where he volunteered countless hours as announcer and score keeper for many Eureka Teener, Legion and Amateur baseball games.

Grateful for having shared Steve’s life are one brother, Tim (Bonnie) Serr, Eureka; two nephews, T.J. (Kelly) Serr and Lorne (Samantha) Serr, Aberdeen and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Elaine Serr and one infant sister Mary Ann Serr.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials which will be distributed to local organizations in Steve’s memory.

EVERETT WAYNE PRICE

The funeral services for Everett Wayne Price, 90, Aberdeen, are 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at First Baptist Church, Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24.

Everett died Saturday, May 5, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, in the Fellowship Hall.

Everett Wayne Price was born on May 17, 1921 at Aberdeen, SD to George and Mabel (Laulo) Price.

This is the area where he grew up and attended school.

On July 28, 1944 he entered the US Navy and was honorably discharged on February 8, 1946.

On December 26, 1943 he married Mary Frankenberger at Hettinger, ND.

They lived in Haynes, ND, McLaughlin, SD, Mobridge, SD and in 1994 they moved to Aberdeen, SD.

He worked for the railroad retiring after forty-three years and then did testing for the military for more then ten years.

Everett was a member of First Baptist Church, Aberdeen.

He loved hunting and fishing. His family was very important to him, he always put them first.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Everett’s life are his wife, Mary Price, Aberdeen, children, Peggy Larabee, Tim (Michele) Price, Diane Brokaw and Brad (Tracie) Price, grandchildren, Warren (Crystal) Horselooking, Michele Horselooking, Kathleen Smith, Amey Horselooking, Lee Larabee, Thomas Larabee, Jessica (Jack) Phinney, Libby (Aaron) Gellhaus, Edward Everett, Samantha, Elizabeth, Josephine and William Price, great grandchildren, Warren, Jr., Samantha, Brooke, Brandon and Tiana, Sharde, Devaun, Latrice, Lyric, Lillian, Patrick, Jr., Lee, Jr., Aliea, Leia and Angelina, brother, Allan Price.

Everett is preceded in death by his parents, George and Mabel Price, brother, Robert Price, sister, Hazel Madden and sister-in-law, Kathleen Price.

CLARA L. DUNKER

Mass of Christian Burial for Clara L. Dunker, 91, Casa Grande, AZ and formerly of Aberdeen was held on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Casa Grande. Clara died on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at her home in Casa Grande.

Burial will be at 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 5, 2012 in Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen under the direction of Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Clara is survived by a son; Clinton Dunker of Sturgis, SD and a sister; Edna Reiker of Aberdeen, SD.; Daughter-in-Law; Diann Dunker of Casa Grande, AZ;and grandchildren; Aaron (Martha) Dunker and Angela Morales all of Casa Grande, AZ; and Abbie Dunker of Tucson, AZ.; Fourteen great-grandchildren and Five great-great grandchildren.

Clara was preceded in death by her husband; Alvin Dunker and a son; Darwin Dunker
