DORIS JANE MADDEN

The funeral service for Doris Jane Madden, 74, Aberdeen, is 3:00 p.m., Monday, May 7, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Pastor Tom Haggar officiating.

Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen.

Doris passed away into God’s loving arms on Thursday, May 3, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation is from 2-7 p.m., Sunday, May 6 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Grateful for sharing her life were her three children; Sharon Kirth, Ricky (Remy) Broadbent and Monica ( Matt) Swearingen, eight grandchildren; Grainger Kirth, Matt Kirth and Beth (Bryan) Hofer, BJ (Rashel) Artz, Jason (Crystal) Artz, Richard (Amanda) Swearingen, Travis Swearingen and Richard Broadbent, eight great grandchildren; Anthony, Michael, Jayden, Jordyn, Dylan, Kaylee, Kaleb and Carter, sisters; Ione Hampton and Illa Fischer, and brother, Oryn Fischer.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; Eva and Herbert Fischer, two brothers, two sisters, one infant daughter, Francine Broadbent, and one great grandson, Gabriel Kole Artz.

Doris passed away peacefully with her daughters Sharon and Monica and grandson Richard by her side.

Doris had a love for music, flowers and life.

She lived life her way till the very end.

Doris’ family would like to send special thanks to Sharon Weiss for all the prayers and support she gave the family through mom’s long illness.

Also Aberdeen Health and Rehab staff for all the loving care they gave our mother the last nine years.

Rest in peace, Mom, we love you.

RAYMOND “RAY” ACKERMAN

The funeral service for Raymond “Ray” Ackerman, 74, Aberdeen, is 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 9, at First Assembly of God, Pastor Gary Wileman officiating.

Burial: 1:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24.

Raymond died Thursday, May 3, at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation is from 1-7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 8 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Raymond Ackerman was born on May 1, 1938 to Christian and Magdalena (Oberlander) Ackerman in Herreid, SD.

When Ray was 5 years old, his family moved to Aberdeen, SD.

He grew up and attended school in Aberdeen.

After receiving his education Ray joined the United States Air Force.

He served most of his four years in California though he was stationed in Guam for a short time.

Ray married Judy Sexton on June 28, 1963 in Aberdeen, SD.

He was working for the Aberdeen School system at the time.

Ray spent most of his time with the school system at Simmons Jr. High.

In 1974, Ray began work for the General Service Administration.

He then went to work for the city of Aberdeen at the airport in 1984 and was there until his retirement in 2003.

Ray was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Aberdeen.

He loved to garden and would often grow things for other people.

Ray had a servant’s heart and was always willing to lend a hand to those in need.

Taking time to fellowship with others was important to Ray and his time with Judy and friends drinking coffee at Ken’s was a special time for them.

Grateful for having shared Ray’s life are his wife Judy, Aberdeen, son Patrick (Tangee) Ackerman, his granddaughter Kylee, Aberdeen, four sisters, Leona (Paul) Crane, Richmond, VA, Verna Tolson, Aberdeen, Myrlene Weishaar, West Bend, WI, JoAnn Ackerman, Aberdeen, and one brother, Richard (Karen) Ackerman, Aberdeen.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Magdalena, one sister Bernice Miller, and two brothers, Harold Ackerman and Robert Ackerman.

GAYLEN E. POPPEN

Funeral service for Gaylen E. Poppen, 57, Aberdeen will be 11:00 am, Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 915 S. Dakota Street, Aberdeen.

Pastor D. Thomas Rawerts will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park.

Gaylen entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation is from 1:00-7:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm Friday, May 18, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street.

Gaylen Edgar Poppen, son of Hanko and Wilhelmina (Siefkes) Poppen was born on May 17, 1954.

He attended Aberdeen public schools and was a client of Aspire, Inc. in Aberdeen since 1986.

Gaylen worked at various businesses in Aberdeen including the Millstone Restaurant, Aberdeen City Hall, Herberger’s, and the Lakewood Mall Food Court.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for many years, and more recently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

In his free time Gaylen enjoyed watching sports on T.V.

Gaylen is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Arlyn and Kathie Poppen of Eagan, MN, one niece, Jennifer Poppen of Woodbury, MN, one nephew, Andrew (Megumi) Poppen of Maple Valley, WA, and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hanko and Wilhelmina Poppen.

The family requests that memorials in Gaylen’s memory be directed to Aspire, Inc.,

607 North 4th Street, Aberdeen, SD 57401-2733.

ARLIS DEAN HANSON

Funeral service for Arlis “Arly” Hanson, 74, Bath will be 1:00 pm, Monday, May 7, 2012 at First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Eldon Reich will officiate. Arly died on Monday, April 30, 2012 at his home in Bath.

Visitation will be from 1:00-7:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Marvin and Irene (Schneider) Hanson welcomed Arlis (Arly) Dean Hanson on August 24th, 1937.

Their family also included Merle, Allen, and Patty. After graduating from Columbia High School, Arly left for the US Army.

When he returned, he married Arlene Kuebler where they spent their life in Bath, raising a busy and fun loving family.

Arly was the first Fire Chief at the Bath Fire Department, worked on the family farm, and managed the Bath Fertilizer Plant for the South Dakota Wheat Growers for 18 years.

At that time, he started his own soybean company, Ag Services; then Natural Gold where he was still president of the board.

He was also the proud inventor of the process of the Renewable Diesel Additive.

Arly and Arlene were married for 52 years and blessed to have 6 kids; Glenn (Tami) Hanson, Todd (Lynn) Hanson, Kim (Allen) Nickeson, Scott (Lori) Hanson, Holly (Gary) Bettmann, and Carl (Carrie) Hanson.

Arly always said he had 6 kids for a reason and made sure to keep them all very busy.

It was very important to him to teach them the value of a hard working man.

Countless family memories were made hunting, fishing, farming, the family lake cabin, and his special Christmas meals.

The sight of his grandchildren never failed to bring a smile to his face and a sparkle to his eyes.

He enjoyed every one of his 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

During his months of illness, his youngest granddaughter of 23 months spent lots of time with him which kept him occupied and on his toes.

His grandchildren’s memories consist of many which include his funny, honest, and energetic personality, his loving laugh, his involvement with them in hunting, sports, and car racing, fun food gatherings including his lobster Christmases, and he was always a friend to every single one of them.

Grandchildren include Colton & Courtney Hanson, Tyler, Shelby, & Meggie Hanson, Austin McKittrick, Casie, Sonny, Denver, & Mariah Nickeson, Joshua Felton, Hayley & Marquell Haberer, and Sage Hanson.

Great Grandchildren include Treston Hanson, McKenna Huset, and Parker Boeger

Towards the end of his life Arly was blessed by his many caring and passionate friends who took the time to extend extraordinary acts of kindness towards him and his family.

In the end, Arly was able to be in his home with his family surrounding him.

Even Suzi, the family dog, was right with him being his friend to the end.

Arly was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Hanson and son, Scott Hanson.

ESTHER WELLS

Funeral service for Esther Wells, 90, Aberdeen will be 2:00 pm, Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Sam Ellyson officiating.

Burial will be Wednesday, May 23 at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Akron, Ohio.

Esther died Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Wednesday with family present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.

Esther Thorndike was born on March 19, 1922 in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Robert and Ruth (Matthews) Thorndike.

At a young age the family moved to Barberton, Ohio.

She graduated from Barberton High School in 1939, and Ohio University in Athens, Ohio with a BS in Education in 1943.

She taught elementary school for several years until she married.

Esther was united in marriage to Fred L. Wells, Jr. on October 18, 1947 at Barberton, Ohio.

They made their home in Doylestown, Ohio.

Four children were born to this union.

Esther kept busy as a homemaker and volunteer.

She was active in her church, especially with the women’s missionary circles.

She taught Sunday School for many years.

She was also active in Girl Scouts over 30 years, helping to start the first troop in Doylestown.

She was a volunteer at Children’s Hospital in Akron, Ohio, serving faithfully for 30 years.

In 2002 Esther moved to Aberdeen, SD to be near her children.

Esther loved to knit and kept her children’s hands warm with many pairs of colorful mittens.

Even after the kids were grown, Esther continued to knit mittens.

Every year she would donate at least fifty pairs to charities.

Esther also enjoyed counted cross-stitch.

As her vision began to fail and arthritis stiffened her fingers, Esther kept busy by reading large print books.

But her greatest joys were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and her church.

She was a former member of First Baptist Church in Barberton, Ohio and First Baptist Church, Aberdeen, SD.

At the time of her death she was part of the fellowship at Sovereign Grace Church, Aberdeen.

Blessed to have shared Esther’s life are her children: Fred L. (Sherry) Wells III of Vale, SD, Anne Wells of Missoula, MT, Nancy (David) Eckert of Aberdeen, SD, and Mary (John) Weygaerts of Piedmont, SD; grandchildren Jancy Wells, Alleah (David Johnson) Weygaerts, and Sheridan Weygaerts; great-grandchildren Tyson Wells and Kina Johnson; honorary grand children Bethel Delzer, Jonah Eckert, and Aaron, Tyler and Rachel Propst; nephew Brad Thorndike and niece Kim (George) Rainear.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Ruth Thorndike, her husband of fifty years, Fred Wells, and her brother, Edward Thorndike.

VAL DEE CUTLER

The funeral service for Val Dee Cutler, 79, of Groton, will be 1:00 pm, Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., with Pastor Nancy Manning officiating.

Private burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Val died Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1:00-7:00 pm Tuesday, May 1 at the funeral home with family present from 5-7 pm.

Val Dee Cutler was born on September 19, 1932 at Claremont, SD to Homer and Grace (Snyder) Cutler.

This is where he grew up and went to school.

He was part of a 6-man football team from Claremont that took the state championship and held the record for the most consecutive wins.

In 1950, he graduated from Claremont High School.

Val married Marilyn Stange on August 19, 1956 at Groton, SD.

He farmed until his retirement in 2003.

Val was a member of the United Methodist Church in Claremont.

He was a devoted, kind-hearted husband and father.

He dearly loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Val also had a great love for his dog, Honda.

He loved farming and working the ground.

Airplanes, trains and miniature farm equipment sparked his interest, as well as sports and his time at Mina Lake.

Grateful for having shared Val’s life are his wife, Marilyn Cutler, children, Valerie (Jeffrey) Spomer, Tammie (Kevin) Wegehaupt, Larry (Kris) Cutler and Terry (Jill) Cutler, grandchildren, Sunny, Ane and Grant Spomer, Dustin (Candice), Eric (Sheilah) and William Wegehaupt, Laura (Joe) Jolesch, Emily Meyers, Mackenzie, Madison and Michaela Cutler, Jonathan, Abby and Megan Cutler, great grandchildren, Gabriella, William and Owen, siblings, Wayne (Patsy) Cutler, Kay Cutler, Lorelii Odland and Gary Cutler.

Val is preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Grace Cutler, and brother, Dean Cutler.

BRYCE SHELDON ANGLIN

Funeral service for Bryce Sheldon Anglin, 21, Aberdeen will be 1:00 pm, Monday, April 30, 2012 in the Wachs Arena at Northern State University’s Barnett Center.

Pastor Eldon Reich and Pastor Tom Haggar officiating.

Burial in Riverside Memorial Park. Bryce died Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Visitation will be from 1:00-7:00 pm with family present from 5:00-7:00 pm Sunday, April 29 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street.

Bryce Sheldon Anglin was born on July 19, 1990 to Greg and Jeanette (Grau) Anglin in Aberdeen, SD.

He attended May Overby elementary, Simmons middle school and Aberdeen Central High School, graduating in 2009.

At the time of his death, he was a junior at Northern State University majoring in Marketing.

During Bryce's elementary years he was involved in Destination Imagination and was a member of the 2000 team that went to the Global Finals in Ames Iowa.

In 2001 and 2003, Bryce was South Dakota's representative at the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick regional championships held at the Metrodome.

At Aberdeen Central High School, he participated in football, basketball and track.

Bryce was an honor roll member throughout all four years of high school.

Bryce's sport of passion was baseball.

He started playing when he was in kindergarten with Spring League baseball and continued on with traveling teams from age nine to twelve.

He then played teener baseball with the Aberdeen Smitty Baseball program from 2003 through 2007 and high school baseball from 2004 through 2009 culminating with back to back state championships in 2007 and 2008.

Bryce was a member of the Aberdeen Smitty's American Legion baseball team in 2008 and 2009.

The 2008 team captured Aberdeen's first state championship since 1964 and Bryce was very proud to be a part of this historic achievement played on the home field.

Bryce was a member of the 2010 and 2011 NSU baseball teams earning NSIC All Conference Academic Honors in 2011 and also received Kretchman Academic Honors in 2010 and 2011.

He was currently playing amateur baseball with the Northville Merchants.

Bryce was currently employed at Ken's SuperFair Foods and Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Department as a summer park maintenance worker.

In the summer of 2011, Bryce also began umpiring teener games for the Aberdeen Hardball Association.

He did yard work for many years for special neighbors Lester and Charlotte Clarke and Bill and Clara Keller, who treated him like a grandson.

In the fall of 2009, Bryce began his college education at Northern State University, where he had earned NSU Wolf Pact, SD Opportunity and baseball scholarships. Bryce was on the NSU Dean's list his freshman and sophomore years.

He was elected Steele Hall President for the academic year of 2010-2011 and was a new member of the Northern State Orientation Leadership group.

Bryce was baptized and confirmed at First United Methodist Church.

As shown by the great response to his Caring Bridge website and by the number of visitors during his battle with cancer, Bryce touched the lives of an unbelievable number of people throughout his short life. The amount of support that “Bryce Nation” received can only be described as overwhelming as he courageously fought this disease.

Grateful for having Bryce in their lives are his parents, Greg and Jeanette Anglin, Aberdeen, brother Brian ( Heather) Anglin, Brentford, SD, sister Erin Anglin, Eureka, SD, nieces and nephew, Kyanne, Rain and Steele Anglin, Godparents Jackie Witlock and Gerald Moench and many aunts, uncles and cousins, whom he loved dearly.

Bryce was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Jerome and Georgia Anglin and maternal grandparents Raymond and Rose Grau, Aunt Kyra Schraeder, Uncle Duane Peavler and Cousin Michael John Grau.
