Stanley Younce, 52
Stanley R. Younce died Friday in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Portland, Ore., after a courageous battle with liver dis ease.
He was born Oct. 13, 1947, in Butte to Stanley L. Younce and Betty (Younce) Brown. He attended school in Butte and graduated from Butte High.
He enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Vietnam War. Following this he worked for the Anaconda Co. and then was an over-the-road truck driver for Union Carbide and Evergone Trucking. He retired for medical reasons in 1978.
Stan married the former Judy Sumpter on April 25, 1975, in Butte where they made their home.
He enjoyed hunting and bowling and was vice presi dent of the East Side Athletic Club.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jack; brother, Craig and mother-in-law, Ruth Sumpter.
Stan is survived by his lov ing wife, Judy Younce; daugh ter and son-in-law, Tammy and Todd Boucher; daughter, Kim Younce; granddaughters, Amber, April and Taylor Boucher and Kaitlyn McKinney; father, Stanley L. Younce of California; mother, Betty Brown of Butte; sisters and brother-in-law, Hazel Duddy, Robin and Terry Clark; brothers and sisters-in-law; Pat and Cherie Waddell and Lang and Dana Waddell; sisters-inlaw and brothers-in-law, Roberta and Lewis Perino and Debbie and Steve Merzlak; brother-in-law, Robert Sumpter; father-in-law, Fred Sumpter; numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Stan will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Younce's remains have been cremated in Portland. Memorial services will be con ducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home. The family requests that memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary Veron, 81
Mary Elizabeth Jeffers Veron died Monday afternoon in a local nursing home.
She was born in Garden City, Kan., on May 18, 1919, to Charles F. and Mary E. (Ammons) Jeffers. She attended school in Kansas.
Mary was a pur chasing agent for National Wire and Cable for many years, and retired at age 78.
She mar ried Harry A. Veron in Denver. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Harry A. and Diane Veron, Glendora, Calif.; daughter and son-inlaw, Mary and Paul Peek, Butte; grandchildren, Sean Peek, Robert Peek, Brian Veron and Richard Veron; sis ter, Helen Jones, Fallbrook Calif; brother, Charles Jeffers, Denver.
There will be no services in Butte. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Covina Hills, Calif. Memorials: Highlands Hospice.

Oswald Bergen, 80
ANACONDA -- Graveside services for Oswald Alexander `` Ozzie'' Bergen are at 1 p.m. Thursday in New Hill Cemetery with Chaplain Gene Erickson offi ciating.
American Legion Post No. 21 color guard will present military honors. Wake/visita tion is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of KT Riddle Funeral Homes.
Oswald died Sunday after noon in St. James Community Hospital, Butte.
He was born May 30, 1920, on the family ranch in Meagher County. He attended school in Martinsdale. He worked construction through out the state. On July 18, 1941, in Billings, he married Norma Marinek of Forsyth. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1941 and was discharged as a sergeant in 1945. He returned to Montana and he and Norma lived in Harlowton, where Ozzie worked for the Milwaukee Road.
They came in 1953 to Anaconda, where Ozzie worked for the Anaconda Co. as a bricklayer helper at the smelter. He retired in 1980, when the smelter closed.
He enjoyed gardening and woodwork.
Survivors include his wife, Norma of Anaconda; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Geraldine, Stan and Mary Bergen all of Lewiston, Idaho, Alvie Bergen of Anaconda; several nieces and nephews.
His sister, Jean Dammell, died in April 1999.
Memorials: donor's choice.

Frank DeBates, 80
WHITEHALL -- Francis `` Frank'' DeBates died Monday at his home in Whitehall.
He was born June 5, 1920, at Hardwick, Minn., to Henry and Lena DeBates. He was raised in eastern South Dakota and entered the Navy during World War II and Korea. He returned to South Dakota where he farmed. He moved to California in 1956 where he worked for Douglas Lockheed building aircraft. He then worked for Caltrans running heavy equipment building highways until 1976. In 1977, he moved to Livingston where he owned and operated a radiator shop. He also worked two summers in Yellowstone National Park building roads. He moved to Whitehall in 1989.
He was known for his gar dening and enjoyed fishing.
Frank married Ila Mae Nelson Nov. 25, 1950, in Minnesota; she died Aug. 5, 1984.
He married Margaret Ricketts Feb. 6, 1989.
An infant son, Theodore Bruce DeBates, and brother, John DeBates, preceded Frank in death.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret DeBates of Whitehall; sons, Barry DeBates of Dallas, Texas, Steven DeBates of Belgrade; daughters, Barbara Majors of Palm Springs, Calif., Brenda Toy of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Susan Hall of Darby, Carol Groh of Livingston, Margaret DeBates of Great Falls, Dawn Graham of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; sister, Theresa Miller of Sioux Falls, S.D.; brother, Donald DeBates of Three Forks.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery near Belgrade with Deacon Robert Lane officiating.
Memorials: Whitehall Little League, Disabled Veterans or donor's choice.
Scott Funeral Home of Whitehall is in charge.

Montana Broadbent, 87
WHITEHALL -- Montana Arnold Broadbent died Friday.
Montana was born July 15, 1913, at Basin to Samuel and Angeline (Jackson) Arnold. She received her schooling in Boulder. She married Wyman Broadbent in 1929. They then moved to Whitehall and later returned to Boulder. She then moved to Oregon where she was a cook at a university fraternity. Wyman died in 1980. Upon his death, she returned to Boulder before moving to Washington to be near her son. She lived there until her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Melroe; sisters, Donna Rae, Dora Leigh, and Charolette.
Survivors include her sons, Alva Broadbent of Spokane, Louis and Almina Broadbent of Turner, Ore., Jerry and Charlene Broadbent of Bacuda, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; sisters, Corrine Williams of Red Bluff, Calif., Audrey Arnold of Paradise, Calif., Carol Christensen of Tucson, Ariz.; brother, Richard Arnold of Boulder.
Memorial services are at 2 p.m. Friday from Scott Funeral Home, Whitehall, with the Rev. Bob Benson officiating.

Melvin Crowe, 73
ANACONDA -- Upon his request there will be no pub lic services for Melvin L. `` Mal'' Crowe of Opportunity, who died Tuesday in the Anaconda hospital.
A private family graveside inurnment service is pending in Sunset Memorial Park.
Melvin Lester was born in Anaconda on March 10, 1927, to Lester E. and Verla Mae (Stere) Crowe. He attended school at Beaver Dam and Anaconda High School. He was employed with the Montana Power Co. in 1948. He was the manager in the Anaconda office for many years and then transferred to the Butte office where he worked until 1988.
Mal loved to dance, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping in the mountains.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy of Opportunity; sons and daughter-in-law, Les and Phylis Crowe and Scott Crowe, all of Butte; stepson and stepdaughter, Terry Sandrelta and Tracy Bafford, both of Washington state; brothers and sisters-in-law, Calvin and Emma Crowe of Thompson Falls and Guy and Betty Crowe of Great Falls; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Mary, and grandson, Kevin Strickland.
Services and cremation are under the care of the KT Riddle Funeral Homes, Anaconda.
Memorials: United Methodist Church of Anaconda and/or Aldersgate Methodist Church of Butte.

Margaret Fagan, 84
Margaret E. Fagan, 84, a longtime Butte resident, died Saturday, Aug. 5, in a Fallbrook, Calif., hospital.
For the past several years, Margaret had lived with her daughter Lois in Fallbrook.
Margaret was born April 29, 1916, in Butte to John and Ida Evans. She was an only child. She worked in the Butte school system for several years and was a member in long standing of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union. She loved to bowl and dance. Margaret belonged to the Butte Pioneers Club. She was active in both Sacred Heart and St. Ann's parishes.
Harold `` Fizz'' Fagan, her husband of 57 years, and her parents preceded her in death.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Margie Fagan of Billings; daughter, Lois Peretti of Fallbrook; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A Mass in honor of Margaret will be included in mass at St. Ann's Church on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Memorials: Charity of the donor's choice.

Margaret Johnston, 88
ANACONDA -- Margaret Mary Johnston, 88, of 512 Cedar, Anaconda, died Monday in the Anaconda hos pital.
She was born in Anaconda Aug. 29, 1911, to William and Mary (Brennan) Johnston. She graduated from Anaconda High in 1928, and graduated from Montana Normal School (now Western Montana College in Dillon). She taught at Silver Deer School and Modesty School in the East Valley of Deer Lodge County. She retired from the Anaconda public school sys tem in 1976.
Margaret belonged to the Anaconda Catholic Community, Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Historical Society, Montana Retired Teachers, Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers, American Federation of Teachers and had a life membership in the Alumni Association of Western Montana College.
Margaret took many postgraduate courses during the summer and was active in many extracurricular activi ties. She received recognition for many, both in high school and college. She was selected Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America by the Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America for her contributions to the advance ment of elementary education and community service.
Survivors include a sister, Grace Finnegan of Anaconda.
Friends may call at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Longfellow Finnegan Funeral Home, with the parish vigil service to fol low at 6:30 p.m. The funeral begins at 10:15 a.m. Friday from the funeral home, pro ceeding to Holy Family Church where Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Larry Tromly, 94
Larry A. Tromly, a former longtime Butte resident, died of natural causes Sept. 18 in Dallas, Texas.
He was born Jan. 26, 1906, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., to Lawrence A. Tromly Sr., a Butte jeweler, and Mary Tromly, a former cafeteria supervisor at Butte High.
The Tromly family moved to Butte in 1923. Larry worked at the Bell Diamond Mine and was a shift boss at the Anselmo Mine. He joined the Butte police force in 1936, and retired from the force in 1971. Larry was active in the Summit Valley Masonic and Bagdad Shrine organizations.
Larry and Mildred Carey were married Dec. 17, 1930. Mildred died in 1995 in Dallas. They had been mar ried for more than 64 years.
Survivors include sons, Dr. Robert R. Tromly of Seeley Lake and Larry A. ``Bing'' Tromly of Pensacola, Fla.; brother, Dr. Robert G. Tromly of Tyler, Texas; seven grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren.
A family memorial service is pending.

Jodi Overstreet, 41
THREE FORKS -- Jodi (Naranche) Overstreet died Sept. 23.
She was born Nov. 26, 1958, in Butte, the daughter of Dan and Sally Naranche. She was educated in Butte and Manhattan schools, and grad uated from Bozeman High in 1977. She received a degree in business and economics in 1983 from the University of Montana.
She belonged to Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
After graduation, she worked as a collection officer for First National Bank, Bozeman, and was later named northwestern regional collection manager for Norwest Bank in Billings.
She married John Overstreet on Nov. 27, 1987, in Livingston. They had two children, and moved to Three Forks, where John is school superintendent.
Survivors include her hus band, John; parents, Bob and Sally Bond; children, Jessica and Jordan; brother, Dan Naranche, all of Three Forks; sisters and brothers-in-law, Tamaira and Joe Harp, Silverdale, Wash., and Staci and Alan Wass, Belgrade; grandmother, Mae Brainard, Butte; uncle, Harry Gordon Brainard and his wife, Jane, of Butte; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Daniel Naranche; brother, Michael Naranche; and grandfather, Harry Brainard.
Visitation is 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Dahl Funeral Chapel, Bozeman. Private family memorial ser vices are planned.

Arthur Tackmier, 82
Arthur Joseph Tackmier died Sept. 25.
He was born in Green Bay, Wis., March 21, 1918, and was reared in Butte. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps before enlisting in the Army during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theatre and fought in the battle of Okinawa in June 1945. Returning after VJ Day, he married Kathryn R. Finnegan and moved to Salem, Ore. He had lived at Mount St. Joseph in Portland, Ore., for the past two years.
Mr. Tackmier worked for the Mead Corp. for 25 years. A lifelong Catholic, he enjoyed carpentry, gardening, tinkering and travel.
To know Arthur was to know his good nature.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie, and son, James.
Survivors include daugh ter, Susan K. Tackmier of Portland; and sister, Jean Sharon and dear friend Mickey Silver, both of Butte.
Visitation is 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with rosary at 7 p.m., all in Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service in Salem. Funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Friday in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with burial in Belcrest Memorial Gardens in Oregon.
Memorials: Church memo rial fund.

Clyde Kennedy, 67
SHERIDAN -- Clyde James Kennedy of Sheridan died Thursday, Sept. 21, at home.
He was born Sept. 5, 1933, in Auburn, Neb., to Claude and Grace (Gillespie) Kennedy. As a boy, his family moved often, living in California, Nebraska and Missouri. He joined the Armed Forces and served during the Korean War as an air rescue member on a heli copter. After the service, he moved to Witchita, Kansas, before moving to California, where he worked for Lockheed. He later worked at Stanford University as a mechanical engineer, helping with some of the first experiments to break down DNA. He moved to Sheridan in 1995.
He married Evelyn Kennedy in 1952; they divorced in 1984.
Survivors include a son, Clyde Kennedy Jr., and three daughters, all of San Jose, Calif.; twin brother, Claude Kennedy, Joshua Tree, Calif.; sisters, Audrey Mills, Indio, Calif., Vivian McCormack, LaQuinta, Calif., and Evelyn Cheney, Scottsdale, Ariz.
Graveside services with military honors are 10 a.m. Friday in the Sheridan Cemetery, Sheridan.
