Ralph Henry Block

Ralph Henry Block was born to Herman A. and Georgia (Hrbek) Block on April 1, 1924, on the family farm near Walnut, NE. Ralph was Baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He attended District 63 School near Walnut, and graduated from Verdigre High School in 1942. He worked for various area farmers for several years.

In 1949, he left for South Dakota and attended a short course offered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In 1950 he was hired as a Predatory Animal Control Agent. For the next 30 years he worked mostly in northwest South Dakota, later near Sargent, NE, helping ranchers who had losses from predatory animals. Ralph was also qualified as a gunner, allowed to shoot coyotes from a government plane. One day the air was unstable, and the pilot came in low. They hit a bad downdraft, causing the new Piper Super Cub plane to hit the ground so hard that Ralph and the pilot narrowly escaped death. During his career he eliminated just under 10,000 coyotes, plus prairie dogs, badgers, etc.

In 1960 Ralph's sister Beatrice of Arizona came back for a visit, bringing her friend Verna Stoddard. Ralph and Verna married in 1961. They had three children: Russell, Warren, and April.

Ralph retired from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agency in 1980. He then could enjoy his hobbies of gardening, canning, history, traveling, collecting stamps and coins, and attending flea markets. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church.

Ralph loved South Dakota, and considered himself a South Dakotan. He died in a traffic accident near Tyndall, S.D. on Saturday, September 25, 2004, on his way to a flea market.

Family includes son, Warren of Rapid City, S.D.; daughter, April of Austin, TX; sister Arlene Liska of Verdigre; brother, Marvin and Mary Anne Block of Creighton; nephew, Ralph Milne of Arizona; niece, Wilda of California; and his very dear friend, Mildred Dorr of Creighton.

Funeral service is Thursday, September 30, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Creighton. The clergy is Pastor Dwight Albers. Burial is at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Verdigre.

In a subsequent move, she and her husband lived in the California Redwood region, where she worked for her good friend, Deanna Taylor, at the Miranda Market in Miranda, California.

She loved to travel and often spent several weeks on the road visiting with family and friends in the Midwest. One of the highlights of her life came about twenty years ago when she took a trip to Europe and while there visited the region of Germany from which her father's family emigrated. She also spent time visiting with family in Niece, France and with her cousin, Ray Ellis and his family in England.

Wherever she went, she quickly made friends. She enjoyed frequenting favorite cafes where she thoroughly delighted in the company of friends, old and new.

Both her sister and brother are deceased.

Arlene was one of the few women in those times to have received a higher education. Arlene had also raised her granddaughter, Gwen Pike, from age 16. She had provided for Gwen for several years, along with financing her through college.

She was an active church member of the Reformed churches in the Ebanzer country Church until it was closed and consolidated in with Salem Reformed Church in Menno.
