Samuel Charles Andes
Funeral service for Samuel Charles Andes (Sammy), 57, of Watertown, SD, was held on Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel in Sisseton, SD, with Rev. Ronald Brugger officiating. Honorary Pallbearers were all of Sammy’s family and friends. Visitation was held on Tuesday, August 23, 2005, one hour prior to services at the Cahill Funeral Chapel. Interment was at the Sisseton Cemetery. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD, was in charge of the arrangements.
Born July 6, 1948 in Tucson, AZ to Samuel C. and Angela Andes, he was to be the oldest of three children. He was the fourth generation to be named Samuel C. Andes. Sam graduated from Sisseton High School in 1966 and attended two years of college at the University of North Dakota and two years at Lake Area Voc Tech in Watertown, SD. He had since resided in Watertown for the past 30 years.
Sam passed away quietly at Beverly Healthcare, in Lake Norden, SD, on August 19, 2005, from liver cancer. After a lifetime of emotional and physical stress, Sam is now at peace.
Sam is survived by one sister, Bette Spotts-Hill of Salt Lake City, UT; one brother, Edward Andes of Boise, ID; two nieces, Jessie Andes of Rapid City, SD, and Belinda Dalberg and husband Carl Ege and son, Canyon of Salt Lake City, UT; his girlfriend, Debbie; his roommate, Terry; and many friends in Watertown.

Clifford W. Pearson
Clifford W. Pearson, 87, Rosholt, SD, died Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at a Wheaton, MN, hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 26, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt, SD, with the Rev. David Piper officiating. The organist was Lana Sand, and the vocalists were Paul and Lana Sand.
Burial was in the St. Joseph Lutheran Cemetery, rural Rosholt. Military honors were performed by the Read-Veflin American Legion. Honorary pallbearers were members of the United States Army 709th Tank Battalion. Active pallbearers were Michael Olson, Ken Quimby, Robert Addy, Jeffrey Meyer, Robert LeClair, Roy LeClair, Tom Wagner, Ed Foster, Ray LeClair and Daryle Wragge.
Visitation was held Thursday, August 25, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt, SD. Visitation continued Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Clifford W. Pearson was born on November 25, 1917, to parents Freidaborg (Erikkson) and John Pearson in rural Rosholt, SD. He was educated at West Harmon Country School, and as a young lad worked for area farmers. He also worked in Southern Minnesota until he was drafted into the United States Army on June 27, 1941.
His tour of duty took him overseas to the European Theater. He was a member of the 709th Tank Battalion. He fought in France, Belgium, Germany, and Rhineland. He was also in the Battle of Normandy. He was honorably discharged September 29, 1945. Clifford received the Bronze Star, the American Defense Service Medal, three Overseas Service Bars, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal.
After the war, he drove truck in Minneapolis, MN, for a year, then came home to the family farm and farmed with his brother Floyd until their retirement in 1995.
He was baptized, confirmed and a lifelong member of St. Joseph Lutheran Church.
On November 1, 1973, he married Gladys Quaal at St. Joseph Lutheran Church. They made their home in Rosholt until February of this year when Cliff entered the Rosholt Care Center.
Clifford served on various boards in the Rosholt community. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, and fishing, and was an avid reader.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; two step-children, Dr. Susan Quaal of Salt Lake City, UT, and Tom Quaal of Minneapolis, MN; one sister, Florence Quimby of Peoria, IL; two sisters-in-law, Doris Pearson of Rosholt, SD, and Florence Pearson of Worth, IL; many dear nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Preceding him in death were six brothers and sisters; and a daughter-in-law, Patti Quaal.

Leo K. Fleischhacker
Funeral services for Leo K. Fleischhacker, 88, of Sisseton, SD, were held on Thursday, August 25, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Waubay, SD with Fr. Darrell Lamberty celebrant. The organist was Joanne Herr and Song Leader was Bonnie Gaikowski. Pallbearers were Darin Golombiecki, Neil Chapin, Robert Fleischhacker, Adam Jorgenson, Ron Fitz, and Loren Jorgenson. Honorary Pallbearers were all of Leo's grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation was held on Wednesday, August 24, 2005, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Cahill Funeral Chapel in Sisseton, SD, and also one hour prior to services at the church. Military Rites were provided by Otto-Quande Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton V. F. W. Post #3342. Interment was at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Waubay, SD. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD, was in charge of the arrangements.
Leo was born on May 25, 1917, to Karl and Verony (Lentsch) Fleischhacker on the family farm near Lake City, SD. He grew up and attended country school near the farm. After his education, Leo helped his family farm and he also worked for the CCC in Rapid City, SD.
Leo was united in marriage on June 22, 1942, to Rose Pomrenke in Peever, SD. He entered into the Army on October 14, 1942, and served until December 8, 1944, when he was honorably discharged. Leo received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Good Conduct Ribbon for his service.
After his discharge, Leo farmed north of Sisseton, SD. The couple purchased a farm near Waubay, SD, in 1953 which they operated until they retired in 1996, when they moved to Watertown, SD.
Leo was a lifetime member of the Otto-Quande Renville American Legion Post #50 in Sisseton. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Leo liked to fish, hunt, and garden.
Leo moved to the Tekakwitha Living Center in March of 2004. Leo passed away on August 21, 2005 at the Tekakwitha Living Center in Sisseton.
Leo is survived by his wife, Rose Fleischhacker of Sisseton, SD; five children, Max and Diane Fleischhacker of Watertown, SD, Maxine and Dennis Golombiecki of Donnelly, MN, Elsie Fitz of Sioux Falls, SD, Leona and Karlton Chapin of Havana, ND, and Gloria and Kim Jorgenson of Waubay, SD; two brothers, Steve Fleischhacker of Sisseton, SD, and Mike Fleischhacker of Sisseton, SD; two sisters, Anna and Vern Struck of Sioux Falls, SD, and Veronica Phillips of Sisseton, SD; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Erin Jorgenson; twin great-grandsons, Dallas and Luke Fitz; two brothers, Karl and Alfred; and one sister, Marie Thompson.

Sabastian "Hap" G. Fix
Funeral service for Sebastian G. (Hap) Fix, 90, of Grove, OK, were held on August 24, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Sisseton, SD, with Rev. Fr. Dennis Deis, OMI, celebrant. Organist was Colette Hull and song leader was Sherman Hannasch. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church. Military Rites were provided by Otto-Quande Renville American Legion Post #50 and V. F. W. Post #3342. Interment was at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Sisseton, SD. The Cahill Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
Hap was born to Jacob and Catherine (Gisi) Fix on August 10, 1915, at Onaka, SD. After completing high school, Hap attended Huron College and then taught at McIntosh and Parker, SD, until called into the Army in WWII. He served as a captain in the artillery in Tunisia, Corsica, Italy, and France, and continued in the Army Reserves until 1954.
Upon being discharged from active service, he returned to the field of education, earning a masters degree in education from the University of Denver with additional post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota, University of Colorado, Moorhead, MN State.
In 1952, Hap married Joanne Plut of Sisseton, SD. He was a life member of SDEA, the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. His career as a school administrator in South Dakota took him to Wilmot, Bonesteel, Tyndall, and Pierre where he retired.
In 1995, he moved to Grove, OK where he made his home the last years of his life. Hap passed away on August 18, 2005 in Grove, OK.
Hap is survived by his wife, Joanne Fix of Grove, OK; three daughters, Nancy of Idaho Falls, ID, Marilee White and her husband Joe of Anchorage, AK, and Maureen Porter and her husband Mark of Arlee, MT; four grandchildren, Emily and Jared Porter of Arlee, MT, and Jacob and Meara White of Anchorage, AK; one sister, Lena Deis of Faulkton, SD; a sister-in-law, Rose Wagner of Hettinger, ND; brothers-in-law, George Rice of Aberdeen, SD, and John Plut and his wife Evelyn of Grants Pass, OR; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Hap was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Anton and Jacob; and one sister, Eva Jochim.

John H. Ceroll
John H. Ceroll, 82, Sisseton, SD, formerly of Claire City, SD, died Tuesday, September 6, 2005, at a Sisseton hospital.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 8, at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Claire City, SD, with the Rev. Doug Wanderer officiating. The organist was Edwin Arndt, Jr., and the vocalists were Bob Schultz and Allen Schram.
Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Claire City, SD. Pall-bearers were Darrell Ceroll, David Ceroll, Calvin Ceroll, Gerald Ceroll, Ron Ceroll, and Rory Ceroll.
Visitation was held Wednesday, September 7, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Eggers Funeral Home at Rosholt, SD, and continued Thursday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the church.
John H. Ceroll was born December 8, 1922, to Fred and Leisa (Dobs) Ceroll in Minnesota Township, Roberts County, SD. He attended school at Minnesota #2. After finishing school, he worked on the family farm.
On June 8, 1960, he married Deloras Schaunaman at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Claire City, SD. He farmed in Minnesota Township his entire life, retiring in 1995. He moved to Sisseton in 1997.
Survivors include his wife Deloras of Sisseton, SD; one sister, Esther Pankow of Hankinson, ND; two sisters-in-law, Edith Ceroll of Lidgerwood, ND, and Ruth Ceroll of Sisseton, SD; and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Art, Emil, Reinhold, and Frederick; and one sister, Emma Heinecke.

Dorothy P. Carlson
Dorothy P. Carlson, 80, Java, SD, died Monday, September 5, 2005 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen, SD. Her Funeral Mass was held 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 9, 2005 at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, Bowdle, SD, with Fr. Rader, celebrant. Burial followed at St. Augustine's Catholic Church Cemetery, Bowdle, SD. Organist was Margy Bobby and song leader was Jeanne Bieber. Ushers were Norbert Thomas and Henry Huft. Offertory gift bearers were Dorothy's children. Mass servers were Kaitlyn Sandmeier and Kama Konda. Lector was Travis Konda.
Visitation began at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home, Bowdle, SD, with a 5:30 p.m. Wake Service.
Dorothy Pauline Thomas, daughter of Marion (Weisbeck) and Adam Thomas, was born at her parent's farm east of Bowdle, SD, on April 25, 1925. She attended Cottonwood Lake Rural School and Bowdle High School, graduating with the BHS Class of 1943. She attended Northern in Aberdeen, where she earned her teaching certificate.
She taught at the Thurn School SW of Bowdle, SD, and the Linderman School north of Java, SD, in Campbell County. During the summer, she worked at the Peter Goetz farm near Roscoe, SD.
She married Oscar "Swede" Carlson at St. Augustine's Church February 9, 1948. They settled on Swede's farm 2 miles south of Java, where Dorothy lived the remainder of her life.
Over the years she kept busy raising her family, working on the farm, being a teacher's aide in Java for several years, and working in the dietary department at the Selby Good Samaritan Center. She also was president and bookkeeper of the family business, Carlson Custom Blacksmith (CCB, Inc. ).
She was a member of St. Augustine's Church and was a former member of the Altar Society. She also was active in the Java High School Band Boosters and 4-H.
She enjoyed word search puzzles, playing cards, crocheting, rug making, and reading. She spent many hours helping Swede in the shop and enjoyed the farm animals. Her family will remember Dorothy as a good mother who was skilled at preparing German food, especially borscht soup.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Oscar "Swede" Carlson of Java, SD; one son, Perry O. Carlson and his wife Bonny of Aberdeen, SD; three daughters, Diane Merrigan and her husband Mickey of Canistota, SD, Dinah M. Konda and her husband Frank of New Effington, SD, and Dinal M. Carlson and her husband Bruce of Garretson, SD; three brothers, August Thomas of Tucson, AZ, Matt Thomas and John Thomas of Aberdeen, SD; three sister, Sister Bernice Thomas of the Sacred Heart Monastery, Yankton, SD, Catherine Fischer of Eureka, SD, and Lucille Hoven of Tucson, AZ; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Katherine Konda of Garretson, SD.
She was preceded in death by her father on January 10, 1960, her mother on May 27, 1972, and two brothers.
These grandchildren will be honorary bearers: Kama Konda of New Effington, SD, Krysta Carlson, Austin Carlson and Jaden Carlson all of Garretson, SD.
These grandchildren will be casketbearers: Zachary Carlson and Kerry Konda of Aberdeen, SD, Bart Merrigan of Canistota, SD, Travis Konda of Kansas City, MO, Daren Konda of Omaha, NE, Loren Konda of Garretson, SD, Alan Konda of New Effington, SD, and Neal Konda of Brookings, SD.

Helen M. Badger Shepherd
Funeral service for Helen M. Badger Shepherd, Ska Ninkata, Yellow Calf Woman, 87, of Wilmot, SD, was held on Saturday, November 5, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at the Tribal Community Center in Agency Village, SD, with John Cloud III Senior Catechist, Fr. Les Campbell, Rev. Charlie Chan, and Rev. Duane Fox officiating. Organist was Kay Bursheim and Drums were provided by Ridge Runners and Old Scouts. Pallbearers were Eric Shepherd, Steve Shepherd, Edward Shepherd, Robert Diaz, Lazaro Sanchez, William Shepherd, Anthony Rodriquez, and Allan Nygard. Honorary Pallbearers were all of Helen's friends and relatives. There was a wake service held on Wednesday, November 2, 2005, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Tribal Community Center in Agency Village, SD, a wake service on Thursday, November 3, 2005, starting at 7:30 p.m. at White Shield, ND, and an all night wake service on Friday, November 4, 2005, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Tribal Community Center in Agency Village, SD. Interment was at the Sisseton Cemetery. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD, was in charge of the arrangements.
Helen was born July 19, 1918 in Elbow Woods, ND to Edward Badger and Edith Sitting Bear Badger. She is the descendent to Chief Sitting Bear and Black Calf Woman and great-great granddaughter of Star.
She attended school at the Bismarck Indian School in Bismarck, ND and Flandreau Indian School in Flandreau, SD. After completing high school, Helen attended nursing school in Pipestone, MN.
She married Smiley Harvey Shepherd on June 26, 1943 in Santa Ana, CA. Helen had eight children, Ferol Hall, Smiley Shepherd Jr., Arlene Bearstail, Geraldine Williams, Marie Shepherd, Ila Garcia, Leslie Rodriquez, and Annette Sanchez. Helen was adopted by Louis Heminger (Shooting Star), and she had nineteen grandchildren, forty-six great grandchildren, and four great-great grand children.
During her lifetime, Helen enjoyed making Star Quilts, blankets, and crafts. She was involved in church activities at Immanuel Church in El Monte, CA and St. Mary's Church in Old Agency, SD. Her greatest enjoyment was playing the piano for the five community churches on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Reservation.
Helen was involved in the Pow Wow celebrations in Los Angeles, CA and Old Agency, SD. She won many prizes as a champion dancer and was Gold Star Mother of the Year. Helen was in many Indian movies in Los Angeles, CA. She took great pleasure in her hobbies, which included puzzles and reading the Sota, MHA, Guide Post Church News Letters and supported the Tiospa Zina Basketball Games and enjoyed watching Grand Ole Opry singers. She will be greatly missed and remembered at the Elderly Days at Magic, Dakota Sioux, and Connection Casinos.
Helen passed away suddenly on November 1, 2005 at a hospital in Fargo, ND.
Helen is survived by her eight children, Ferol Hall of White Shield, ND, Smiley Shepherd Jr. of Shakopee, MN, Arlene Bearstail of Wilmot, SD, Marie Shepherd of Wilmot, SD, Ila Garcia of Los Angeles, CA, Leslie Rodriquez of Fontana, CA, and Annette Sanchez of Rosemead, CA; nineteen grandchildren; forty-six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a Godchild, Lukie Cloud; and an adopted daughter, June Lockwood.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Edith; her husband, Smiley Shepherd Sr. ; one daughter, Geraldine Williams; two sisters, Florence White and Christine Shepherd; and a God-child, Goldie Max.

Otis Biel
Mundwiler Funeral Home announces the death of Otis Biel, age 79 of Browns Valley, MN. Otis died October 28, 2005 at the Grace Home in Graceville, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wilmot. Father John McMullen, O. S. B. and Father Jack Nordic officiated, and burial was in the St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Browns Valley, MN. Visitation was Monday at the church beginning at 5:00 p.m. followed by a Scripture and Rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation was continued Tuesday morning one hour prior to the Mass. Honorary bearers were “All Friends and Relatives and the Staff and Residents of Grace Home. ” Casketbearers were Scott Syverson, Don Hegge, Jason Biel, Jeremy Biel, Ervin Firchau, and David Spindler. Music was presented by Neoma Ballhagen, organist; Tim Mundwiler, vocalist and Jerry Niles, vocalist. Military honors were presented by the American Legion, Otto Quande Renville Post #50.
Otis Biel was born March 23, 1926, in Roberts County, SD. He was the son of Otto and Minnie (Winchell) Biel. He attended rural school in Lake Township, Roberts County. He served in the United States Army during World War II, then was again drafted on October 20, 1950 during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation, the United Nations Service Medal, one Overseas Bar and the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. He was honorably discharged on July 19, 1952.
Otis was united in marriage on November 9, 1954 with Deloris Spindler at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Sisseton, SD. The couple farmed together, and in 1965, Otis also began working for the Farmer’s Union Coop. He worked there until 1972, and continued to farm until retiring in 1999. He also was a commercial ag sprayer. They moved into Browns Valley in 2002, and moved into the Grace Home in Graceville on January 7, 2005. Otis enjoyed his grandchildren and also enjoyed playing cards.
Otis Biel is survived by his wife, Deloris of Browns Valley, MN; four sons: Jerry and wife Carolyn Biel of Wichita, KS; Larry Biel of Browns Valley, MN; Dan Biel and Michelle Thielke of Wilmot, SD; and Robert and wife Sandy Biel of Browns Valley, MN; eight grandchildren; one step-granddaughter and two great-grandsons; two brothers: Glen and wife Bea Biel of Lewiston, ID; and Arnold Biel of Wahpeton, ND; two sisters: Josie Darrington of Troy, ID; and Janice and husband Vance Osborne of Troy, ID; a brother-in-law, Leo and wife Ardelle Spindler of Veblen, SD; two half sisters-in-law: Dorene Lundgren of Wilmot, SD and Beulah Jensen of Wilmot, SD; two aunts: Alice Biel of Browns Valley, MN and Adele Gonsoir of Webster, SD; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three grandchildren, three half brothers: Willard Lundgren, Lloyd Lundgren and David Jensen; and one half sister, Lucille Fryer.
Mundwiler Funeral Home of Milbank was in charge of the arrangements for Otis Biel.

Kenny Block
Funeral service for Kenny Block, 20, of Sisseton, SD was held on Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at the Tribal Com-munity Center in Agency Village, SD, with Rev. Phil Lawrence officiating. Pianists were Kaye Bursheim and Mary Beth Kirk, with the Drum Group Wahpekute. Pallbearers were Cece Block, Josh Fellbaum, Jared Goodsell, James German, Bobby Wolfe, Kinger Johnson, Logan Iverson, Billy Canku, Dave Lewis, Dicky Johnson, Josh Cunningham, Thomas German, Jace Goodsell, Alex Fuentes, Dane Helgeson, Cyrus Hawkins, and Stephan Hayes. Honorary Pallbearers were all of Kenny’s friends and relatives. There were wake services on Monday, May 1, 2006 and Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, SD. Interment was at the Mayasan Presbyterian Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD, was in charge of the arrangements.
Kenny Merlyn Block was born on May 5, 1985 in Sisseton, SD to Jeff and Bonita (Hart) Block. He grew up and attended the Sisseton Public School system, graduating in 2003. Kenny loved hunting, fishing, and puttering around with his truck. His favorite pastimes were watching movies, playing the Play Station 2 and the X-Box 360 games, messing around on the Internet, burning CD’s, and recording movies off the TV.
Kenny loved boxing with his sister Chantel as he called her his favorite nickname “Bug Eyes”. Kenny, Chantel, and Chaunce spent time together throwing a football around playing catch. His little brother Chaunce called it playing Minnesota football.
Kenny’s love of playing baseball began with T-Ball at age five with Sisseton City Rec, and continued throughout his school years, playing centerfield, left field, first base, and pitcher.
After graduation he joined the U. S. Navy but received a Medical Discharge shortly after. Kenny returned to Sisseton and was employed by the Dakota Western Corp.
Kenny was always ready and willing to help with whatever needed doing and tried his hardest to fix anything broken. He had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews and always made himself available to help care for them. He also spent a lot of time babying his Albino ferret, “Weezy”, and hanging out with his many friends. Kenny will be missed.
Kenny is survived by his parents, Jeff and Sugar Block of Sisseton, SD; two brothers, Bobby Wolfe and Chaunce Block, and two sisters, Cece and Chantel Block all of Sisseton, SD; his grandparents, Thomas and Marge Block of Sisseton, SD; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Kenny was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Theresa Hart, and his paternal grandmother, Cecelia Williams.

Marlys Eloise Jones
Late of San Bruno, CA, Marlys entered into rest in Burlingame on March 17, 2006.
A retired nurse she was a native of Sisseton, SD, aged 81 years. Beloved wife of the late Forest Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter O. and Annie L. Paulson. The last of seven siblings she was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mable Jerde, Agnes Grinde and Mildred Oswskey and brothers, Burdette Paulson, Marion Paulson and Otto B. Paulson. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends were invited to attend Memorial Services 5:00 p.m. Monday, April 3, 2006 at Skylawn San Bruno Funeral Home, 200 West San Bruno Avenue, San Bruno, CA. Private committal was in Green Lawn Cemetery at Colma, CA.

Phillip F. Doyle
The funeral for Philip F. Doyle was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church of rural Kidder, SD. The Reverends Sara and Terrill Sorensen officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery, with Military Honors by Reisenweber-Wolf Post #298 of the American Legion of Kidder, SD. Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2006, at the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton, SD, and one hour preceding the funeral at the church on Tuesday.
Philip died Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton, SD, at the age of 84.
Philip F. Doyle was born to William “Bill” and Sophia (Nanik) Doyle on January 28, 1922 at Edgeley, ND. He came with his parents as an infant to Veblen, SD where his father was affiliated with the Soo Line Railroad. He spent all his growing up years in Veblen, graduating from Veblen High School in 1940. Philip enjoyed so much as a teenager working at the local gas stations, and shocking grain for Gilford Hill.
After graduation, he was employed by the Producers Marketing Co. in Veblen until he joined the U. S. Navy in the fall of 1942. During World War II he served his country in the Hawaiian Islands, Aleutian Islands and the Philippines.
In 1946, he was honorably discharged from the U. S. Navy and returned to Veblen, where he continued his employment with the Producers Marketing Co. In the spring of 1947 he moved to Kidder, SD as the manager of the Producers Marketing Co.
It was there he met Gladys Haverly, and they were married July 1, 1949. Philip and Gladys continued to live in Kidder until 1955, when they moved to Aberdeen, SD so that Gladys could continue her education at Northern. During that time Philip was employed by the R. E. Huffman Business Machine Co.
n 1956, they moved to Billings, MT, where Phillip became affiliated with the Sherwin Williams Co., working as a credit manager. After three years he took a traveling job for the company and moved to Fargo, ND. In 1962 they moved to the Minneapolis, MN, area so Philip could continue his work as District Supervisor for the Sherwin Williams Co., covering several states.
n 1979, they moved to Britton and Philip continued traveling for Sherwin Williams for five more years. He retired in 1984 after 28 years with the company.
Philip was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Britton, SD, and the Reisenweber-Wolf Post #298 of the American Legion of Kidder. He was a generous supporter of many civic organizations and charities in the Britton and Veblen areas. He attended every bake sale that he could, and bought large quantities of goodies to take home and store in the freezer. Then, when his “coffee buddies” would stop by the back door of the house, Philip would be ready with fresh coffee and treats in only three minutes!
Coming from a railroading family, Philip loved to watch the trains come and go at the elevator, during harvest. He also enjoyed traveling with Gladys, after his retirement.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 56 years, Gladys Doyle of Britton, SD; two brothers, Joe (Irene) Doyle of Campbell, MN, and John (Cleo) Doyle of Great Falls, MT; one sister, Lorraine Doyle of Sisseton, SD; a very special friend, Mary Ellen St. Sauver of Britton, SD; and a number of nieces, nephews and their families.
Music for the funeral was provided by Gail O’Brien, organist with Michelle Erickson and Mary Ann Roehr, soloists. Casketbearers were Jerry Pattison, Dennis Ramsey, Jim St. Sauver, Sherman Vold, Billy Doyle and Bill Nordstrom. Honorary casketbearers were members of the Veblen Fire and Rescue Department.
Philip was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
