Donna Jean Peterson

Mrs. Donna Peterson, age 66, of Milbank died at her residence. Donna was the widow of August Peterson who died in 2006.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 19th at 10:30 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Milbank. Rev. Mark Phillips will officiate and burial will be in the LaBolt Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday at Mundwiler Funeral Home from 5 – 7 p.m. and continue at the church on Monday, one hour prior to the service.

Casket bearers will be: Dr. Crispin Webb, Vern Heupel, Jon Zarsky, Jody Kuper, Don DeBoer, and Mark Winquist. Honorary bearers will be Donna's grandchildren: Emmanuelle, Nicolette, Annalise, Luke, Isaac, Hanna, Abagail, Stanis, Gustavo, Justina, and Nolan.

Music will be provided by Sheila Dailie, organist; Jamie Mundwiler, vocalist; Jody Kuper, vocalist and a vocal quartet: Rev. Mark Phillips, Leonard Stengel, Jody Kuper and Richard Bohn.

Donna Jean Peterson was born February 19, 1942, at the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, MN to Lois and Donald Engel. She attended school at Henry Neil in Aberdeen, except for her senior year, when she attended Miltonville Wesleyan College in Miltonville, KS. Upon graduation, she returned to Aberdeen to attend Northern State University. Upon graduation, she taught school in Ipswitch, SD.

Donna married August Peterson on June 11, 1966, at the Evengelical United Bretheren church in Aberdeen, SD. August and Donna first settled in Stockholm, SD; then moved to LaBolt, SD in 1969, until moving to their final home in Milbank, SD in 1981. They were married 40 years, until August passed away in November, 2006.

Donna is survived by her mother Lois, four children and eleven grandchildren. Ronald Peterson and his wife Claudette of Granby, MA, and their children Emmanuelle, Nicolette, and Annalise; Kathleen and her husband Jon Zarsky of Austin, TX, and their children Stanis and Gustavo; Rachel Custer of Sioux Falls, SD and her children Justina and Nolan; and Ken Peterson and his wife Julie of Minneapolis, MN, and their children Luke, Isaac, Hanna, and Abigail.

Donna's faith has been central to her existance since she was a child. She has most recently been a member of the United Methodist Church.

She has also been an active member of Valley Baptist Church, the Evangelical Covenant Church in LaBolt, and the Elm Evangelical Covenant Church in Stockholm. She has also devoted considerable time to additional Bible study groups. For the past several years she has immensely enjoyed the fellowship of the Torah Club.

Donna loved kids and kids loved her. She taught either part time or full time at Ipswich, Grant Deuel, and Big Stone Elementary. She has most recently been volunteering time at Koch Elementary. She was recently recognized as a True Friend of Education by the Milbank Education Association. Her grandchildren were especially blessed by her love and devotion.

We will all miss her more than words can say.

Neil D. Cummins

Neil D. Cummins, age 64, of Shoreview, MN. Neil was born and raised in Wilmot, SD. He died January 9, 2009.

Survived by wife, Jo Ellen of Shoreview, MN; sons, Rick (Amy) Cochrane of Woodbury, MN; Patrick (Georgia) Cochrane of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren, Ella, Maya and Jameson; sister, Mary (Warner) Nibbe of Savage, MN; and brothers, Gary (Dorie) Cummins of St. James, MN and Noel (Diane) Cummins of Milbank, SD; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Memorials preferred to donor's choice.

He was preceded in death by his parents Delbert and Ella.

Edward G. Sorsen

Edward Sorsen, age 81, of Milbank died January 11th at Milbank Area Hospital - Avera Health.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, January 15th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Father Ken Lulf will officiate and burial will be in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday at Mundwiler Funeral Home beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a scripture and prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Military honors will be presented by the American Legion, Birch-Miller Post #9 and the VFW Grant County Post #3486.

Music will be provided by Nancy Johnson, organist and the St. Lawrence Funeral Choir. Gift carriers will be Tanner Sorsen, Alex Sorsen and Jenna Sorsen; Tyler Sorsen will be an Altar Server. Casket bearers will be: Jacob Mueller, Emily Mueller, Samantha Mueller, Courtney Pierce, Nick Pierce, and Austin Pierce. Honorary bearers will be: Omar Halvorson, Jack Davenport, Dick Wittlow, Chad Mielitz, Charlie Meyer, Rick and Sherry Meagher.

Edward George Sorsen was born February 9, 1927, at White, SD. He was the son of George and Mae (Hey) Sorsen. Ed served in the United States Amry, enlisting on May 5, 1945. He was awarded the Victory Medal, the Meritorius Unit Award, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan). He was honorably discharged on December 8, 1946. He returned to South Dakota and was united in marriage on August 22, 1950, with Betty Lakeman in Elkton, SD.

Ed was a construction worker, having worked for Swanson Construction, Davenport Construction, then owning and operating Sorsen Construction. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. He was a life member of the VFW, Grant County Post #3486 and the American Legion, Birch-Miller Post #9. He enjoyed golfing, spending time with his grandchildren and hanging out with his close friends.

Edward Sorsen is survived by his wife, Betty of Milbank, SD; five children: Patsy Sorsen of Eagan, MN; Peggy Sorsen of Eagan, MN; Steven and wife Jeanne Sorsen of Coon Rapids, MN; Melanie Pierce of Volga, SD and Roberta and husband Tom Mueller of Milbank, SD; 10 grandchildren; one brother: Robert and wife Bonnie Sorsen of Baltic, SD; one sister: Evie Barrett of Franklin, NC and a sister-in-law: Kathy Sorsen of Plankinton, SD.

The family prefers memorials be given to the Milbank Cancer Fund.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Charles; one brother-in-law Jim Barrett and a niece, Geri Barrett.

William Schwandt

William Schwandt, age 75 of Milbank died January 11th at the Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 14th at 10:30 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. Rev. Keith Bicknase will officiate and burial will be in the Milbank Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday at Mundwiler Funeral Home beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service.

Honorary bearers will be grandsons: Michael Marsh and Justin Moser, and all his great grandchildren. Casket bearers will be grandchildren: Jeremy Johnson, Shannon Johnson, Dustin Holtquist, Jennifer Van Hout, Justin Athey, Dustin Tomoson, Eric Tomoson, and April Tomoson.

Music will be provided by Larry Tietjen, vocalist and Carol Ydstie, organist.

William Fredrick Schwandt was born April 20, 1933, in Milbank, SD. He was the son of Frank and Martha (Bohlen) Schwandt. He attended school in Milbank and worked at Valley Queen Cheese. He was united in marriage on June 1, 1957, with Beverly Loberg.

Bill worked in Aberdeen, SD for Wright’s Tree Triming Company, for Coco Cola, and Equity Creamery. He moved to Milbank in 1977, and was united in marriage on December 10, 1977, with Janice (Lage) Holtquist.

Bill operated a tree service business, worked for Hunter Granite Company and Cold Springs Granite Company. He later owned and operated Palisade Park on Big Stone Lake and the Sportsman Bar in Milbank. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank.

William Schwandt is survived by his wife, Janice of Milbank; two daughters: Debra and husband Don Moser of Aberdeen, SD; Nancy and husband Jack Ness of Aberdeen, SD; three step children: Bob and wife Brenda Holtquist of Milbank; Chris and husband Myron Tempel of Wilmot, SD; Debra and husband Bob Van Hout of Milbank; 2 grandsons; 7 step grandchildren; 7 step great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Mavis Bjella of Fargo, ND; Vera Easterby of Milbank; one brother: Bob and wife Waunita Schwandt of Milbank; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Martha Schwandt; his sister and brother-in-law: Dorene and Bill Chan; three brothers-in-law: Jimmy Lain, Leon Bjella, and Gerald Easterby.

Mrs. Mildred Midtovne

Mrs. Mildred Midtovne, age 87 of Marvin, SD died January 9th at Milbank Area Hospital - Avera Health.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 13th at 10:30 a.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home. Pastor Charlie Leonard will officiate and burial will be in the Osceola #2 Cemetery at Marvin.

Visitation will be Monday from 5 – 7 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home and continue Tuesday, one hour prior to the service.

Casket bearers will be: Bobby Peters, Tanner Demaris, Tom Peterson, A.J. Demaris, Kassi Peterson, and Amanda Demaris. Honorary bearers will be her granddaughter, great granddaughter, great great grandchildren and her brothers and sister. Music will be provided by Tim Mundwiler, vocalist and guitarist.

Mildred V. (Peters) Midtovne was born July 25, 1921, in White, SD. She was the daughter of George and Lena (Thoelke) Peters. She was united in marriage on January 9, 1941, in Brookings, SD with Carl L. Midtovne. They lived in White, SD until moving to Marvin, SD in 1977. Carl died June 27, 1990. Mildred moved into Golden Living Care Center in Milbank in March of 2008.

Mrs. Mildred Midtovne is survived by one son-in-law: Robert Manderfeld of Marvin; one granddaughter: Mary and husband Jeff Peterson of Montevideo, MN; 7 great grandchildren; 9 great great grandchildren; two brothers: Bobby Peters and Sidney Peters, both of White, SD and one sister, Mary Ellen Clarin of Brookings, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Barb Manderfeld, grandson Jerry Manderfeld, great grandson Trent Demaris, and two sisters: Ivey Karsten and Evelyn Miller.

Tanner Lee Whipkey

A Mass of Christian Burial for Tanner Lee Whipkey will be held Saturday, January 10th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Father Ken Lulf and Pastor Barry Whipkey will officiate and burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery near Big Stone City.

Visitation will be Friday at Mundwiler Funeral Home beginning at 4 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Music will be provided by the St. Lawrence Funeral Choir and Brenda Whipkey, vocalist.

Tanner Lee Whipkey was born January 3, 2009, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown. He is the son of Barry L. and Sarah A. (Fernholz) Whipkey. Tanner was baptized by his grandfather, Pastor Barry Whipkey. Tanner was called to his eternal home on January 4, 2009, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, surrounded by his loving family.

His memory will be cherished by his parents, Barry and Sarah Whipkey of Watertown; maternal grandparents: Dan and Karla Fernholz of Milbank; paternal grandparents: Pastor Barry and Deb Whipkey of Huron, SD; maternal great grandmother, Cleo Bogenrief of Milbank; paternal great grandparents: Ron and Molly Fox of Flandreau, SD and Marilyn Whipkey of Flandreau, SD; uncles Derek Frenholz of Rochester, MN and Cory and wife Amanda Whipkey of Madison, WI; aunt Annie and husband Paul Thury of Avon, SD and three cousins: Lincoln Thury, Landon Thury and Henry Whipkey as well as many great aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Leona E. Loeschke

Lee (Mrs. Jim) Loeschke, age 84 of Milbank died January 4th at Golden Living Center in Milbank.

Services will be Thursday, January 8th at 10:00 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Milbank. Rev. DeVern Schwenn will officiate and burial will be in the Milbank Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday morning, one hour prior to the service.

Casket bearers will be: John Loeschke, Kevin Welberg, Jordan Welberg, Taylor Welberg, Daniel Van Osdel and Dan Van Osdel.

Leona Esther (Lindeman) Loeschke was born March 28, 1924, at Ree Heights, SD. She was the daughter of Frederick and Maria (Semmler) Lindeman. She attended school near Delmont and Ree Heights, SD. After her mother’s death in 1930, she lived in Delmont, SD. Later she worked at Morrill’s Packing Plant in Sioux Falls. She moved to Milbank, SD in 1945. She was united in marriage with Raymond C. Martin on June 21, 1946. They were blessed with five children. The oldest, Danny Ray, died in 1947.

Lee worked in her husband’s restaurant, The Nu Café for a time, she was also active with Home Nursing Care outside the city. She worked at the Lantern Motel, Mundwiler Funeral Home, Whetstone Valley Nursing Home, and was employed at many private homes as an aide. Ray died on December 30, 1978.

Lee was united in marriage with James Loeschke on June 21, 1981, at Central United Methodist Church in Milbank.

Lee is survived by her husband, James Loeschke of Milbank; three daughters: Deborah Hausman of Yankton, SD; Brenda and husband Dan Van Osdel of Yankton, SD; Jody and husband Kevin Welberg of Milbank; one son: Kim Martin of Milbank; three step children: Elaine and husband Troy Hewson of Newell, SD; Kathy and husband Gary Granquist of Stockholm, SD and John and wife Karen Loeschke of Milbank; 10 grandchildren; 7 step grandchildren; 6 step great grandchildren and a half sister: Delores Brunkon of Sioux Falls, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Raymond, granddaughter: Allison Lee Welberg; son Danny; five brothers; one sister; three step sisters; one half sister and her step mother.

Diane Marie Dinnel

Diane Dinnel, age 42, of Fresno, CA; formerly of Milbank died December 29th at her home in Fresno.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, January 8th at 1:30 p.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Father Ken Lulf will officiate and burial will be in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday at Mundwiler Funeral Home from 5 – 7 p.m. and continue at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Honorary bearers will be all her cousins. Casket bearers will be: Dale Krier, Scott Dinnel, Tom Rodengen, Brian Berge, Brandon Berge, and Aaron Berge.

Music will be provided by Nancy Johnson, organist and the St. Lawrence Funeral Choir.

Diane Marie (Rodengen) Dinnel was born August 29, 1966, in Ft. Carson, CO. As a young child her father was serving in the United States Army and therefore lived Kansas, Minnesota, Germany, Maryland, and then moved to Milbank, SD as a sixth grader. She graduated from Milbank High School. She worked various places before she became a CNA. She was united in marriage on April 12, 1984, with David Dinnel. Diane attended college in Hutchinson, MN and in Willmar, MN and completed her degree as a Registered Nurse. She worked in the Hutchinson Hospital primarily as an OB and ER Nurse. She was most recently working as a traveling nurse, and was living in California.

Diane Dinnel is survived by two daughters: Crystal Dinnel of Milbank; Kayla Dinnel of Fresno, CA; one son: Kevin and wife Natasha Dinnel stationed in Korea; her mother: Patricia Rodengen of Milbank; two brothers: John Rodengen of Faribault, MN; Matthew Rogengen of Sioux Falls, SD; one sister: Deborah Berge of Waseca, MN and many cousins, aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her father, grandparents, one uncle and two cousins.

Susan Ann Merimonti

Susan Ann Merimonti, age 37 of Wilmot died December 26th as a result of a vehicular accident on Highway 12, west of Milbank. Susan's nephew, Taden Taylor, age 8 of Red Wing, MN was also killed. Susan has been returned to her family in Milltown, WI.

A memorial service was held Friday, January 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot. Dr. Peter Reynen officiated.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2009, at St. Michael's Church in Stillwater, MN. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 10:00 a.m.

Susan Merimonti is survived by her parents: Thomas and Frances Merimonti of Mahtomedia, MN; one sister: Tammy Ratajczak of Milltown, WI and one nephew; and friends, Robert and wife Tonya Feather of Wilmot, SD.

Penny Laskowske

Penny (Mrs. Wayne) Laskowske, age 51, of Watertown died December 26th at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 30th at 1:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank.

Jesse Layton will officiate and burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service.

Music will provided by Tim Mundwiler, vocalist and guitarist. Honorary bearers will be: Virgil Erickson, Preston Willhite, Dustin Vostad, Chris Kretzschmar, and Michael Erickson. Casket bearers will be: Justin Layton, Jason Layton, Dan Jensen, Chris Kruthoff, Martin Eide, and Bob Laskowske.

Penny Lee Laskowske was born October 28, 1957, in Watertown, SD. She was the daughter of Gilmur and Violet (Wangen) Layton. She graduated from high school in Willow Lake, SD and received an Associate of Arts Degree in Business from Lake Area Technical College in Watertown. She was united in marriage with Wayne Laskowske on November 17, 1990, in Milbank.

Penny worked as a seamstress until her health forced her early retirement. She enjoyed playing BINGO and collecting bears. Her family brought her joy and she enjoyed family picnics and outings together.

Penny Laskowske is survived by her husband, Wayne of Watertown; five daughters: Dawn Kramer of Watertown; Kristie Erickson of Watertown; Michelle Erickson of Toronto, SD; Taylor Laskowske of Watertown; and Jamie Henson of Oshkosh, Wisc; one son, Michael Erickson of Brookings, SD and five grandchildren: Kirra, Cody, Kelsey, Kersten, and Zaiden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, and one brother.

Leona J. McDonald

Mrs. Leona McDonald, age 85, of Wilmot died December 26th at the Wilmot Care Center.

Funeral services will be held together with her brother, Harold Strasser’s funeral. Services will be Monday, December 29th at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot. Rev. Eldon DeBoer and Rev. DeVern Schwenn will officiate and burial will be in the Wilmot Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday at the church from 4 – 7 p.m. and continue on Monday, one hour prior to the service.

Music will be provided by Sharon Amman, organist and a vocal duet by Sandy Veflin and Carol Theye. Honorary bearers will be all her many friends and the caregivers at Wilmot Care Center. Casket bearers will be: Mike Davis, Ivan Miller, John Beardsley, Roger Green, Dan Meyer, and Kevin Jurgens.

Leona June (Strasser) McDonald was born June 20, 1923, in Wilmot, SD. She was the daughter of Calvin and Jennie (Gerken) Strasser. She attended school in Wilmot. She was united in marriage on December 6, 1945, with Roger B. McDonald in Ortonville, MN. Leona and Roger farmed together in Roberts County until 1969, then moved into Wilmot. Leona also worked as an aide at the Wilmot Care Center. Roger died in 2004.

Leona was a member of Zion Community Church in Wilmot and participated in the ladies church activities. She was a member of the Wilmot Senior Citizens and the Kitchen Band. She enjoyed baking and crocheting. Traveling with her husband was also enjoyed. She especially enjoyed gathering withthe Spekendicken Gang on New Years Eve.

Leona McDonald is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Gary and Ardis McDonald of Wilmot and Duane and Connie McDonald of Groton, SD; 2 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 1 great grandchild and 2 step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 1 step grandson, 1 brother and 1 sister.

The family suggests memorials be given to radio station KFNW, 5702 52nd Ave. South, Fargo, ND 58104.

Harold K. Strasser

Harold Strasser, age 92, of Wilmot died December 23rd at the Milbank Area Hospital - Avera Health.

Funeral services will be Monday, December 29th at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot. Rev. Eldon DeBoer and Rev. DeVern Schwenn will officiate and burial will be in the Wilmot Cemetery.

Music will be provided by Sharon Ammann, organist; Keith Strasser, vocalist accompanied by Lauren Strasser.

Visitation will be Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot from 4 – 7 p.m. and continue on Monday, one hour prior to the service.

Honorary bearers will be his grandchildren: Andrea Strasser, Nick Strasser, Portia Strasser, Shane Strasser, Kendra Strasser; and great grandchildren: Ashlyn Blakely, Braden Blakely and Carson Blakely.Casket bearers will be grandchildren: Fredrick Strasser, Darren Strasser, Travis Strasser, Lauren Strasser, Mark Blakely, and Chantelle Blakely.

Harold Kenneth Strasser was born August 17, 1916, at rural Chancellor, SD. He was the son of Calvin and Jennie (Gerken) Strasser. He moved with his parents to a farm south of Wilmot in February of 1919. He was united in marriage with Esther Smit on September 1, 1943, at the First Baptist Church in Corona, SD. Harold and Esther resided on the home farm until the fall of 1971, when they moved to a farm just across the road. In the summer of 1998, he and his wife moved to an assisted living home in Milbank, SD; and have most recently been residents of Wilmot Care Center.

Harold was a member of Zion Community Church in Wilmot, and was a Sunday School teacher and served on the church board. He was an active 4-H Leader for many years. He served on the Wilmot State Bank Board and the Wilmot Development Corporation.

Harold Strasser is survived by his wife, Esther of Wilmot; four sons and daughters-in-law: Delton and Vernette Strasser of Wilmot; Royce and Mitzi Strasser of Summit, SD; Dale and Ruth Strasser of Freeman, SD; and Keith and wife Lisa Strasser of Omaha, NE; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one sister, Leona McDonald of Wilmot. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers-in-law.

Kenneth Dale Scheuring

Kenneth Scheuring, age 63 of South Shore died December 21st at his South Shore residence.

A memorial service will be held Friday, December 26th at 1:00 p.m. at the South Shore School. There will not be any visitation.

Kenneth Dale Scheuring was born May 19, 1945, in Crookston, MN. He was the son of Tony and Elsie (Rode) Scheuring. He graduated from high school in Aurora, MN. He worked for the Milwaukee Rail Road. He was united in marriage on September 2, 1967, with Norma Richardt in Waubay, SD.

Ken and Norma lived in Milbank for about 20 years. Ken worked for Wilbur Letze at the Standard Station before working as a salesman for the Mercantile Co. They moved to South Shore, SD and owned and operated Meyer’s Rec. Center. Ken enjoyed his chosen occupation as he loved visiting with all his customers and friends. Ill health forced the sale of his business, however, he continued to help the new owner when needed.

Kenneth Scheuring is survived by his wife, Norma of South Shore; three daughters: Deanna Johnsen of Waupun, WI; Barbara and husband Steven Werner of Bell Plaine, MN; Elizabeth and husband Scott Noeldner of Aberdeen, SD; one son: John and wife Crystal Scheuring of Hutchinson, MN; 14 grandchildren; one great grandson; five brothers: Frank Scheuring of Pine City, MN; Darrell and wife Sandy Scheuring of Elkhart, IN; Dennis Scheuring of Eveleth, MN; Keith Scheuring of Grand Rapids, MN and Vern Scheuring of Aurora, MN; one sister: Ardelle Engelstad and friend Dan Kedrowski of McKinley, MN; a brother-in-law: Fran Kayfes of Mountain Iron, MN and a sister-in-law: Linda Scheuring of Gilbert, MN and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents: Tony and Elsie; his daughter: Scarlet; his great granddaughter: Rose; two brothers: Alfred and Richard; two sisters: and Angela Larson and Eileen Kayfes.
