Hazel M. Beetem

Hazel Beetem, age 97, of Milbank died December 15th at St. William’s Care Center.

Funeral services will be Friday, December 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Parkview United Methodist Church in Milbank. Rev. Beth Conrad will officiate and burial will be in the Revillo Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday at Mundwiler Funeral Home from 5 – 7 p.m. and continue at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the service.

The organist will be Sheila Dailie. Honorary bearers will be the members of the American Legion Auxiliary. Casket bearers will be grandsons: Mark Lundberg, Don Beetem, Bob Beetem, Brian Beetem, John Beetem, and Tommy Beetem.

Hazel Marie Beetem was born March 2, 1911, in Albee, SD. She was the daughter of Frank and Carrie Elizabeth (Henry) Bruner. She attended rural school in Vernon Township. Hazel was united in marriage on August 28, 1929, with Thomas F. Beetem at Clear Lake, SD.

Hazel worked many years for the Revillo School District as a cook and custodian. Her husband died on January 12, 1964. Hazel lived in Revillo until 1995, then moved into Milbank. She had been a resident of St. William’s Care Center for the past three years. She was a member of Parkview United Methodist Church and a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed embroidery on dish towels and enjoyed solving word search puzzles.

Hazel Beetem is survived by three children: Lois and husband Orin Lundberg of Alexandria, MN; Donald and wife Betty Beetem of Ortonville, MN; and Thomas and wife Rita Beetem of Rapid City, SD; 14 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren and many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Thomas; two sons: John “Jack” Beetem and infant Robert Beetem; three brothers: Lawrence Bruner, Clayton Bruner, and Bernice Bruner; one sister, Mae Ennen.

Carol Nigg

Carol Gene Nigg passed away, in the arms of her family on December 13, 2008, at Browns Valley Health Center due to complications from heart medication.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, December 18th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Browns Valley. Father Joe Vanderberg will officiate and burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery in Browns Valley.

Visitation will be Wednesday at the church beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitiation will continue at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Honorary bearers will be her granddaughters: Jacqueline Nigg, Stacie Dudy, Hayley Hogan, Stephanie Hannasch, and Jamie Haberman. Casket bearers will be her grandsons: Todd Mutchler, Jason Hannasch, Aaron Judish, Mark Dorame, Jr., Jeffrey Olson, Jesse Bjornson, Deric Archibald, Grant Judish, Jarod Judish, and Corey Nigg.

Music will be provided by Norma Jung, organist; the St. Anthony Choir and vocalists: Jill Spindler, Todd Johnson, and Jan DeClair.

Carol was born December 15, 1927, in Roberts County, SD, the daughter of William and Margaret (Hammond) Plant. She grew up in rural Sisseton and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1945.

Carol was united in marriage to Leo Nigg on December 31, 1945, in Webster, SD. They lived in Browns Valley, Mn, and were members of Saint Anthony Catholic Church. Her husband, Leo, died June 12, 1972.

Carol retired in1993, after 36 years of teaching. She received an Associate Teaching degree in 1960, and a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970, from Northern State College. Carol began her teaching career at age 17, in a one room school house, after completion of a summer teacher training program. Carol taught in rural Roberts County, Peever, Sisseton, and Milbank. Carol was instrumental in writing the Special Education Curriculum for the State of South Dakota, and was honored in 1985 by being chosen as South Dakota’s Special Education Teacher of the Year.

Carol was involved with Special Olympics, Grant County ARC, American Association of University Women, Reading Council, Arts Council, the Christian Women’s Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Carol enjoyed traveling, crocheting, reading, and playing cards. Carol’s passion was ballroom dancing. Carol met wonderful people through dancing and it gave her many years of enjoyment. Carol danced with long time special friend Emil Hillmann for 25 years.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Pam (Greg) Mutchler of Duluth, Terry Archibald of Sioux Falls, Gale (Jenny) Nigg of Eden Prairie, Leola (Larry) Judish of Prior Lake, Gwen (Rod) Olson of Watertown, Brenda (Jim) Aesoph of Watertown, Ellen (Todd) Johnson and Julie Haberman all of Browns Valley: 18 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren; her brother Herbert (Velva) Plant of Provo, SD; her sister Rosetta Nerison of Aberdeen.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, infant daughter Myrna, her parents, brother William Plant, sisters Mildred Kooiman and Lela Quenemoen; and special friend Emil Hillmann.

Our family would like to say a special thank you to the staff and nurses at the Browns Valley Health Center for their kind and loving care.

James William Mitzel

James Mitzel, Sr., age 78, of Milbank died December 10th at the Milbank Area Hospital - Avera Health.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 13th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank.

Father Ken Lulf will officiate and burial will be in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday at Mundwiler Funeral Home beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a scripture and rosary service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Music will be provided by Sandy Tucholke, organist; the St. Lawrence Funeral Choir and Della Doran, vocalist. Honorary bearers will be his children and grandchildren. Casket bearers will be: Bob Rethke, Wyatt Davis, Marvin Powell, Kerwin Schultz, Glen Weeden, and Leo Folk.

Military honors will be presented the American Legion, Birch-Miller Post #9 and the VFW, Grant County Post #3486.

James William Mitzel was born September 20, 1930, in Milbank, SD. He was the son of Frank and Marcelline (Fritz) Mitzel. He graduated from Milbank High School on June 8, 1946. He served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Anchorage, Alaska as a teletype operator for four years. He was united in marriage with Vivian Darlene Jacobson on January 17, 1959, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. He was honorably discharged on July 31, 1959. He returned to Milbank and began his career as a bridge foreman for the Grant County Highway Department. He worked there for 38 years.

Jim was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, a member of the V.F.W. Grant County Post #9, and the American Legion, Birch- Miller Post #3486.

James Mitzel is survived by his wife, Vivian of Milbank; six children: Cheryl and husband Gary Cannedy; James Mitzel, Jr. and special friend Pam Smith; Mike and wife Nichole Mitzel; Mary and husband Arlin Munson; David Mitzel all of Milbank; Teresa Folk and special friend Pat Byle of Colgate, WI and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Marcelline; one brother, Francis Mitzel; one sister, Selma Smith; one grand son, Connor Munson and several aunts, uncles, and nieces.

Lorene E. Howell

SERVICES HAVE BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL MONDAY AT 1:30 PM

Mrs. Lorene Howell, 93, a long time Wilmot resident, died December 7th at the home of her daughter, Carol Payne, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be Sunday, December 14th at 1:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot. Rev. DeVern Schwenn will officiate and burial will be in the Wilmot Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday at the church, one hour prior to the services.

Casket bearers will be: Marlyn Green, Wayne Sandbakken, Merlyn Ammann, Arden Rodeen, Ron Peery, and Dale Peery.

The organist will be Sharon Ammann. The vocalist will be Ken Cameron.

Lorene E. Howell was born in Wadena, Minnesota on July 7, 1915, to William and Dora (Mantei) Hunt. She attended schools in Beardsley, Minnesota and White Rock, South Dakota. She was united in marriage to Francis L. Howell on October 14, 1936, and they were involved in farming until retirement.

Lorene also worked at Dakotah, Inc., retiring in 1985 after 15 years of service. She was a loving Mother, an excellent cook and sincerely enjoyed preparing wonderful meals for her family and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards and having coffee with friends. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmot.

Lorene is survived by her son Lloyd of Redlands, California; her son Gary and wife Beverly of Pleasanton, California; and her daughter, Carol and her husband, Russell Payne of Kenosha, Wisconsin. She is also survived by one brother, Alfred Hunt, of Wheaton, Minnesota and one sister, Doris Peery, of Wilmot. She had nine grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six sisters and two brothers; Dorothy Hovde of Wilmot, Frieda Hunt of Medford, Minnesota, Elsie Newman of Loves Park, Illinois, Ellen Tomhave of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, Clara Stargel of Campbell, Minnesota, Adeline Boom of Wheaton, Minnesota, Melvin Hunt of Worthington, Minnesota and Clarence Hunt of Portland, Oregon.

Fred Chaloupka

Fred Chaloupka, age 73 of Twin Brooks died November 29th at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, December 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank.

Father Ken Lulf will officiate and burial at a later date will be in the Twin Brooks Cemetery.

A prayer service will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home.

Honorary bearers will be his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Casket bearers will be his grandsons: Casey Wittrock, Cole Wittrock, Christopher Madsen, Chad Novy, Jared Engebretson, and Louis Schwandt.

Music will be provided by Nancy Johnson, organist and the St. Lawrence Funeral Choir. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion, Birch Miller Post #9 and the VFW Grant County Post #3486.

Frederick Eugene Chaloupka was born October 31, 1935, in Milbank, SD. He was the son of Frank and Anna (Croymans) Chaloupka. He attended school in Milbank and graduated from Milbank High School in 1953. He was united in marriage with Geraldine Trapp on October 9, 1954.

Fred served in the United States National Guard for twenty years. He worked as a cement and brick block layer for himself as well as other local businesses. He worked many years at Dakota Granite Company before his retirement.

Fred was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank; a member of the VFW Grant County Post #3486. He enjoyed spending every summer in their lake home at Four Mile Lake. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed gardening and shared his “harvest” with family and friends.

Fred Chaloupka is survived by his wife, Geraldine of Twin Brooks, SD; six children: Michael and wife Lorraine Chaloupka of Woodbridge, VA; Christine and husband Terry Wittrock of Milbank, SD; Richard and wife Mary Chaloupka of Anchorage, Alaska; Tom Chaloupka of Twin Brooks, SD; Dan and wife Leslie Chaloupka of Wilmot, SD; and Darlene and husband Dale Madsen of Twin Brooks, SD; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; three sisters: Mary Ann and husband Eldon Herring of Sturgis, SD; Helen and husband Marlo Kinkade of Sturgis, SD and Margaret and husband Don Simon of Kenai, Alaska and a sister-in-law: Betty Chaloupka of Rapid City, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Francis.

Myrtle Bunting

Myrtle Bunting, age 109, of Milbank died November 26th at St. William’s Care Center.

Funeral services will be Sunday, November 30th at 2:00 p.m. at American Lutheran Church in Milbank. Rev. Craig Werling will officiate and burial will be in the Milbank Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday at Mundwiler Funeral Home from 4 – 7 p.m. and continue at the church on Sunday, one hour prior to the service.

Myrtle Iva (LaLond) Bunting was born February 28, 1899, in Odessa, MN. She was one of nine children born to James and Emma (Mews) LaLond. Following her mother’s death when Myrtle was 11 years old, her father moved the family to Watertown, NY, where she grew up until her late teens.

As a teenager, she worked in a munitions factory in New York, making artillery ammunition for the troops in Europe during World War I. At the age of 19 and following the end of the war, Myrtle moved back to South Dakota and the Milbank area to lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Ernest Bunting. On October 4, 1922, she married Ernest’s brother Frank and they began farming in Vernon Township in the Albee area, where they stayed until their retirement in 1978, then moved into Milbank.

Frank died in 1987, but Myrtle was able to live on her own until she was 102 years old. She moved into Snell’s Care, before moving into St. William’s Care Center where she has since resided.

Myrtle Bunting is survived by many nieces and nephews including: Wauneta and husband Bob Schwandt of Milbank; Jeff and wife Iris Bunting of Milbank; Maxine Heiller of Temecula, CA; Marion Bunting of Minneapolis, MN and Virginia Bunting of Big Stone City, SD; as well as many other relatives and dear friends.

Ralph K. Schmidt, Sr.

Ralph K. Schmidt, Sr. died November 23rd at the Milbank Area Hospital - Avera Health.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, November 25th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

Ralph Kenneth Schmidt was born July 23, 1917 in Grant County, SD. He was the son of John Herman and Helen (Tulowetzke) Schmidt. He attended rural school in Alban Township. He was united in marriage with Jane “Cozy” Van Lith on November 27, 1940 in Big Stone City, SD. Ralph farmed in the Milbank/Big Stone City area until retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank.

Ralph K. Schmidt, Sr. is survived by four children and their spouses: Annette and Martin Goerger of Madison, MN; Ralph, Jr. and Marjorie Schmidt of Big Stone City, SD; JoAnn (and Charles, deceased) Rehn of Longmont, CO and Roger and Charlene Schmidt of Maple Grove, MN; his special friend, Delores Buck of Milbank; 12 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife: Cozy; two grandsons: Curt Goerger and Randy Rehn, a son-in-law: Charles Rehn; two brothers and one sister.

Annette Madsen

Annette Madsen, age 92, a long time Wilmot area resident died November 19th at Golden Living Center in Milbank.

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 22nd at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot. Rev. DeVern Schwenn will officiate and burial will be in the Wilmot Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday at Mundwiler Faith Chapel in Wilmot from 4 – 7 p.m. and continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the service.

Honorary bearers will be members of the Wilmot Kitchen Band. Casket bearers will be her nephews: Marlowe Vreim, Gerald Thaden, Harold Thaden, Ron Thaden, Jack Hippen, Mark Hippen, Willis Hanson, Greg Hippen, and Orrin Scholberg. Music will be provided by Sharon Amman, organist and Neoma Ballhagen, pianist.

Annette (Hippen) Madsen was born March 17, 1916, in Lennox, SD. She was the daughter of Harm, Sr. and Johanna (Meyer) HIppen. She moved to GarfieldTownship with her parents in December of 1918. Annette attended school at Garfield #4 in Roberts County. She worked for various people in the community and surrounding area. In 1943, she moved to Wilmot with her father. She was united in marriage with Clarence Madsen on May 5, 1963.

Annette worked for the Wilmot Locker and Burn’s Fairway Store. She was a founder of Dakota Inc. and worked there for ten years. She served as the custodian for First Presbyterian Church for 35 years, from 1959-1994. During that time she was the gardener for the church flowers, inside and out. She was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church and served as Elder, financial secretary, held various offices for the Presbyterian Women’s organization and circles, Presbyterial and Synodical, served as superintendent and teacher for Sunday School and vacation Bible School and sang in the church choir for over 50 years. Her husband died September 21, 1990.

Annette Madsen is survived by two sisters: Sena Scholberg of Ortonville, MN and Minnie and husband Floyd Hanson of Wilmot; a sister-in-law: Alice Hippen of Tucson, AZ and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, three brothers, and four half brothers.

Theresa Van Sambeek

Theresa (Mrs. Francis) Van Sambeek, age 79 of Milbank died November 14th at the Milbank Area Hospital - Avera Health.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, November 18th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Father John Short and Father Ken Lulf will officiate and burial will be in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday at Mundwiler Funeral Home beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a scripture and rosary service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Honorary bearers will be her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Amy Frerichs, Ashley Van Sambeek, Karin and Ryan Foster, Sarah Van Sambeek, Amarah Wang and Willow Wang. Casket bearers will be: Don Gebhart, Nick Frerichs, Michael Wang, Bruce Gebhart, John Fonder and Rob Short.

Theresa Ann (Gebhart) Van Sambeek was born December 5, 1928, in Elkton, SD. She was the daughter of George H. and Margaret (Lanners) Gebhart. She attended rural school in Brookings County, graduated from Elkton High School and received a teacher’s certificate from General Beadle College in Madison, SD. She taught school near Aurora, SD prior to her marriage with Francis Van Sambeek on September 17, 1953.

During military duty for Francis, they were stationed at Fort Bliss, TX for two years. They returned to South Dakota and resumed farming in rural Milbank. Following retirement, they moved into Milbank.

Theresa was a faithful member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and active with the Catholic Daughters and the Quilting Committee. She was a Hospice volunteer and a 4-H Leader. She was a National Director as well as State Director for the South Dakota Right to Life. She enjoyed quilting and sewing.

Theresa Van Sambeek is survived by her husband, Francis of Milbank; one son, David and wife Deb Van Sambeek of Brookings, SD; one daughter: Joan and husband Eugene Frerichs of Milbank; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three brothers: Leo Gebhart, George and wife Anastasia Gebhart, and Richard Gebhart, all of Elkton, SD; one sister, Isabelle Short of Aurora, SD; three sisters-in-law: Vera Gebhart of Flandreau, SD; Margaret Van Sambeek of Milbank; Rosella and husband Gerald Lemke of Milwaukee, WI and brother–n-law: Henry and wife Janet Van Sambeek of Milbank. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and four brothers.

James A. Wellnitz

James A. Wellnitz age 70, of Milbank died November 12th at his residence.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 16th at 7:30 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Rev. Keith Bicknase will officiate.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion, Birch-Miller Post # 9 and the VFW Grant County Post #3486. Music will be provided by Tim Mundwiler, vocalist.

James Arthur Wellnitz was born June 9, 1938, at home in Revillo, SD. He was the son of Arthur and Amanda (Miottel) Wellnitz. Jim was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Revillo. He attended and graduated from Revillo High School on May 17, 1956.

Jim joined the United States Navy in 1956. His tour of duty took him to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where he was promoted to Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class in 1958, and Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class in 1959. Jim was honorably discharged to inactive duty in June of 1960.

Jim returned to South Dakota and attended college for one year in Aberdeen, SD. He was united in marriage with Judy Stenzel on June 23, 1961. From this union they were blessed with two daughters: Konni and Cathy. Jim met and married Barbara (Arndt) Nelson on July 7, 1990. From this union he became a father to Barb’s children: Kimberly, Amy, Vicki, and Bradley.

Through the years, Jim worked for the Mercantile Co. in Milbank and then worked for National Beauty Supply for 25 years. He retired in 2003 and joined his wife’s upholstery business forming B & J Upholstery. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and was a Sunday School teacher.

During Jim’s early adult years he enjoyed golfing and playing in a band. He later purchased a lake home on Big Stone Lake where he and his family spent most of their summers. After his retirement he and his wife, Barb spent all their summers at the lake fishing, throwing darts, hosting fish-frys and enjoying time with children, grandchildren, and many friends.

Jim Wellnitz is survived by his wife Barbara of Milbank; daughters: Konni and husband Bill Tunney of Kewanee, IL; Cathy Pond of Wilmot; step children: Kimberly and husband Wayne Ehlebracht of Milbank; Amy and husband John Sutton of Rosemount, MN; Vicki Nelson of Milbank; Bradley Nelson and special friend Jennifer Johnson of Milbank; 4 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren and 9 step great grandchildren.

Granville “Bud” Ernst

Granville “Bud” Ernst, age 87, of Milbank died November 11th at St. William’s Care Center in Milbank.

Funeral services will be Monday, November 17th at 10:30 a.m. at Parkview United Methodist Church. Rev. Beth Conrad and Rev. DeVern Schwenn will officiate and burial with military honors will be in the Milbank Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday at Mundwiler Funeral Home from 2 – 4 p.m. and continue at the church on Monday, one hour prior to the service.

Casket bearers will be: Neil Pauli, Roger Pauli, Jerry Pauli, Eugene Arnold, Dean Theile, and John Konstant.

Music will be provided by Tim Mundwiler, vocalist and Sheila Dailie, organist. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion, Birch-Miller Post # 9 and the VFW, Grant County Post # 3486.

Granville L. “Bud” Ernst was born May 22, 1921, in Grant Center Township, Grant County, SD. He was the son of John and Frieda (Nuenburg) Ernst. He attended school in Grant Center Township. At the age of 21 years, Bud served in the United States Air Force for three years. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the Milbank area and farmed until 1999.

Bud Ernst is survived by one sister, Jassmine Theile of Osseo, MN; a sister-in-law: Helen Ernst of Milbank; many nieces, nephews and good friends, Bob and Marilyn Holbert of Milbank.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Jasswell and Delford; one sister, Phyliss Arnold.
