Bob Seefeldt

Arthur (Bob) Seefeldt, Jr. age 74 of rural LaBolt died September 27th at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 3rd at 10:30 a.m. at Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg. Rev. Elmer Brinkman will officiate and burial will be in the Tabor Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday at Mundwiler Funeral Home from 5 – 8 p.m. and continue at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the service.

Honorary bearers will be his three grandchildren: Taylor Atkins, Chance Popham, and Clay Popham; and Nick Johns. Casket bearers will be: Myron Seefeldt, David Johns, Dennis Kohl, Justin Kohn, Don Devoe, and Brian Sandro. The organist will be Kathy Granquist.

Arthur James Seefeldt, Jr. was born February 23, 1934, in Deuel County, SD, in the home currently occupied by Lloyd Roe. He was the son of Arthur and Marcella (Peterson) Seefeldt. He attended rural school in Georgia Township and graduated from Revillo High School in 1952. He farmed with his family before serving in the United States Army. Bob enlisted on March 2, 1955, and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on December 4, 1956. Bob returned to South Dakota and was united in marriage on June 21, 1958, with JoAnn Kossman, at Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg, SD.

The couple first farmed on a site north of Mud Lake in Georgia Township, Grant County, SD. Later they purchased the family farm south of LaBolt from his parents. A variety of livestock has been a part of the operation over the years including hogs, dairy cattle, ducks and chickens, beef cattle, sheep, and horses.

Bob was a member of the Georgia Township Board for many years. He was a member of the Revillo Saddle Pals Club. The Seefeldt family have hosted a trail ride at their ranch every fall.They have had up to 160 horses and riders, and had a hay wagon, pulled by draft horses to carry those who did not have a horse. A pot luck dinner always followed the ride.

Bob Seefeldt is survived by three daughters: Sheryl and husband Bret Atkins of Gretna, NE; Laurie Seefeldt and husband Dave Beyer of Revillo, SD; and Lynn and husband Scott Popham of Hayti, SD; three grandchildren: Taylor Atkins, Chance Popham and Clay Popham; a special friend, Carol Lohr of Milbank, SD; one brother: Harold and wife Barbara Seefeldt of Revillo, SD; two sisters: Marie and husband Leonard Walters of Clear Lake, SD and Janice McGowan of Plainfield, IL and brothers-in-law: Orlan Sandro of Hendricks, MN and Robert and wife Wanetta Kossman of South Plymouth, NY.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, JoAnn and one sister, Dorothy Sandro.

Robert D. Kilde

Robert D. Kilde, age 63 of rural Marvin died September 8th at his residence.

Funeral services will be Friday, September 12th at 2:00 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Wilmot. Rev. Glenn Schultz will officiate and burial will be in the Kilborn Lutheran Cemetery near Corona.

Visitation will be at Mundwiler Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 – 7 p.m. and continue at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the service. Music will be provided by Larry Tietjen, vocalist and Joyce Hanson, organist. Honorary bearers will be all family and friends. Casket bearers will be: Doug Woodford, Jeff Schmidt, Marlin Schmidt, Richard Hanson, Loren Holscher, and David Kruger.

Military honors will be presented by the American Legion, Birch-Miller Post #9 and the VFW, Grant County Post #3486.

Robert Donald Kilde was born June 16, 1945, in Roseau, MN. He was the son of Donald and D. Elaine (Olson) Kilde. He lived his early childhood in Badger and Evansville, MN. He attended 12 years of school at Baudette, MN and graduated in 1963. He attended Bemidji State College for two years. He worked for several years as a launch driver and fishing guide on the Lake of the Woods. In January of 1966, Bob enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Fort Hood, Texas, then completed a one year tour of duty with the 97th Artillery Division as Sergeant E5 in Vietnam. Upon returning state-side, he was united in marriage with Carol Wiese on June 15, 1968.He served his last six months as a Military Policeman in New York City, NY. The military was a very important part of his life and upon his honorable discharge in December of 1968, he had received five different combat Army Commendation medals.

Following his discharge, Bob was employed as a Police Officer in East Grand Forks, MN. He and Carol were blessed with two children, Kristine and Russell. In 1974, Bob moved his family to a dairy farm near Twin Brooks, SD. He owned and operated the dairy until breaking his neck in a farm accident in 1982. He and Carol moved to their home near Marvin, SD in 2002, and have since resided there.

Bob was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Wilmot, SD. He had taught youth confirmation classes for two years at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. He was a Township Supervisor for Twin Brooks Township for about 20 years and was an active DHIA member during his dairy years.

Bob enjoyed caring for and working with animals. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying both fishing and hunting. After his farm accident, he spent a great deal of time reading and was always interested in life. He was an avid gardener and as long as he was able, enjoyed raising flowers and vegetables. His family and his two grandsons were his pride and joy. He died from massive heart failure at his home on September 8, 2008.

Robert Kilde is survived by his wife, Carol of rural Marvin, SD; one daughter and son-in-law: Kristine and Nathan Mueller of Marvin, SD; one son and daughter-in-law: Russell and Hisa Kilde of Big Stone City, SD; two grandsons: Andrew Mueller and Zane Kilde; one sister: Janet and husband Robert Shumaker of Madison, WI; father-in-law: Mervin and wife Esther Wiese of Milbank, SD; sister-in-law: Kathy and husband Ken Greschner of Rice Lake, WI; brother-in-law: Ken and wife Shirley Wiese of Twin Brooks, SD and several nieces and nephews in Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Don and Elaine Kilde; and his mother-in-law: Irene Wiese.

Viola M. Wronski

Mrs. Viola Wronski, age 89, of Hartford Beach, Corona, SD died September 8th at her residence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, September 13th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Father Ken Lulf will officiate. There will not be any viewing.

Viola M. Wronski was born May 13, 1919, in Milbank, SD. She was the daughter of John A. and Martha (Hermans) Bucy. She attended rural school in Grant County at Vernon #6. She was united in marriage with Joseph C. Wronski on June 6, 1942, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank.

Viola and Joseph lived in Columbus, GA from 1943 to 1944, and Viola worked for a candy company. She worked in the shipyards in Portland, OR from 1944 to 1945. During World War II she worked at the ammunition plant and was a “Rosie Riveter."

Following her husband’s military discharge, Viola and Joseph moved to Minneapolis where they lived until 1981. Viola worked various jobs, including dressmaking and for the Bloomington Public Schools. She and her husband owned and operated a restaurant in Minneapolis called the Farebox Grill. They retired in 1981, and settled at Hartford Beach on Big Stone Lake, SD. Joseph died September 26, 1989. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank and the ladies auxiliary of the V.F.W.

Viola’s home was always open to family and friends. She enjoyed fishing, dancing and playing cards. Her family will treasure the memories of her wonderful cooking and baking. She was a life long fan of the Minnesota Vikings.

Mrs. Viola Wronski is survived by three daughters: Nancy Meyer of Corona, SD; Joan Peters of Milbank, SD; and Cindy Peters of Watertown, SD; 13 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; one brother, Gene (Stella) Bucy of Milbank, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, one brother, two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Vida M. Poppen

Mrs. Vida Poppen, age 96, of Milbank died September 7th at St. William’s Care Center.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 11th at 2:00 p.m. at Valley Baptist Church in Milbank. Rev. Dennis Webber will officiate and burial will be in the Milbank Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 – 8 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home and continue on Thursday, at the church, one hour prior to the service.

Music will be provided by Barb Bear, pianist; Betty DeBoer, organist; David DeBoer, vocalist; and Kristi Jibben, flutist.

Casket bearers will be: Scott Jibben, Kenneth Jibben, Andrew Jibben, Michael Blankenship, Frankie Fink, IV, and Roy Larson. Honorary bearers will be: Cliff Vitters, Keith Poppen, Art Jacobson, Les Bloem, Don DeBoer, David Hammer, and Wayne Bear.

Vida Mae Poppen, the fourth born child of Thomas and Gertrude (Crowder) Crowell, was born at Hurley, SD on February 12, 1912. She and her family moved to a farm south of Revillo, SD when she was a young girl. She attended grade school “just over the fence” beside her family home. Her first two years of high school were at Dell Rapids, SD, where she made her home with her uncle and aunt, John and Cora Crowell and their family. She returned to Revillo to finish high school in 1932. Vida was united in marriage with Ubbe Poppen on April 24, 1935, in Revillo. Together they farmed near Revillo until retirement. They lived on the farm until 1986, then moved to Milbank. She was a wonderful cook and baker and enjoyed homemaking. She also enjoyed crocheting, making many beautiful blankets. She was an active member of the Revillo EUB Church and served as treasurer and pianist. Her husband died in 1987. Vida moved to St. William’s Care Center in July of 2002, and has since resided.

Mrs. Vida Poppen is survived by one son: Eugene Poppen of Clear Lake, SD; one daughter and son-in-law: Shirley and Gene Jibben of Watertown, SD; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; one step great grandchild; two sisters: Susie Daniels of Sweet Home, OR and Doris Smith of Vancouver, WA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ubbe, a grandson, Corrie Poppen and a grandson-in-law, Frankie Fink III. Also preceding her in death were her sisters: Mildred Port, Alma Hammer, Myrtle Poppen, Helen Alexander, Florence Williams, and brothers: Seth and LeRoy.

The Rev. George Lyon, OSB

The Rev. George Lyon, OSB, 84, a monk of Blue Cloud Abbey, Marvin, died at the monastery on September 3, 2008 after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at Blue Cloud Abbey on Saturday, September 6 at 10:00 a.m.

Father George was born in Loretto, Kentucky on January 14, 1924.He entered the Order of St. Benedict at St. Meinrad’s Archabbey, St. Meinrad, Indiana in 1944 and professed vows in 1945. In 1950, he was ordained to the priesthood. Father George was one of the founding members of Blue Cloud Abbey. Having spent the year following his ordination at the South Dakota monastery, he was then assigned to St. Ann’s Indian Mission, Belcourt, North Dakota. Over the years, he served as superior there and at St. Paul’s Mission, Marty, South Dakota. Assignments at Blue Cloud Abbey included vocation director, novice master, and farm manager. He had been the prior at the abbey until his health began failing a year ago.

Father George is survived his monastic community and by brothers and sisters in Kentucky.

Eva Van Ray

Eva Van Ray, age 89, of Milbank died August 31st at Golden Living Center in Milbank.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, September 4th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Father Ken Lulf will officiate and burial will be in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday at Mundwiler Funeral Home beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a scripture and rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Eva Mae (Terry) Van Ray was born September 4, 1918, on the family farm between Griswold and Carson, Iowa. She graduated from Griswold High School. She was united in marriage on September 16, 1939, with John “Jack” P. Van Ray in Des Moines, IA. They moved to Milbank, SD in 1945. Together, they owned and operated Jack’s Café for two years. They purchased Knott’s Tavern in 1949, and operated the business as Jack’s Sport Shop and Tavern. They sold the shop in 1969, and retired. Eva also worked at Trevett’s Café, the Brite Spot, and Gunslinger’s. She was a pink lady for the hospital auxiliary. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Jack passed away on May 13, 1982.

Eva Van Ray is survived by one daughter, Mary Jo Whiting of Watertown, SD; three grandsons: Anthony (Tony) and wife Lisa Whiting of McGuire Air Force Base, NJ; Andrew and wife Anisia Whiting of Mesa, AZ Adam and wife Stacey Whiting of Watertown, SD; two sisters: Betty Penry of Rohnert Park, CA; Mary Lou Robbins of Griswold, IA; and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters and one son-in-law.

Mabel M. Mogard

Mabel Mogard, age 96, a long time Revillo area resident. Mabel Mogard died August 29th at the Madison Lutheran Home.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 4th at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Revillo. Rev. Keith Smith will officiate and burial will be in the Recaboth Cemetery, north of Revillo.

Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 5 – 7 p.m. and continue Thursday morning, one hour prior to the service.

Mabel Mogard is survived by one son, Don Mogard of Pompano Beach, Florida; 3 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren and one sister, Pearl Gaddis of California.

Agatha Irene Korstjens

Agatha, Mrs. Francis Korstjens, age 94, of Milbank died August 24th at St. William’s Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 29th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Father Ken Lulf will officiate and burial will be in the St. Charles Cemetery in Big Stone City.

Visitation will be Thursday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a scripture and rosary service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Music will be provided by Nancy Johnson, organist and the St. Lawrence Funeral Choir. Honorary bearers will be all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Casket bearers will be her grandsons: Matthew Korstjens, Michael Korstjens, Jeffery Korstjens, Charles P. Korstjens, and Tony Korstjens.

Agatha Irene (Van Stralen) Korstjens was born August 30, 1913, in Milbank, SD. She was the daughter of Anthony J. and Mary G. (Martens) Van Stralen. She lived with her family in rural Milbank for six years then moved into Milbank. She attended St. Lawrence Catholic School and graduated from Milbank High School in 1932. She was united in marriage with Francis Leonard Korstjens on September 15, 1938, in Milbank.

Agatha and Francis farmed together in Grant County. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and a member of the ladies Altar Society. She was very artistic, enjoyed sewing, baking and cooking.

Agatha Korstjens is survived by her husband, Francis of Milbank; four sons and daughters-in-law: Charles and Pat Korstjens of Milbank; George and Joan Korstjens of Correll, MN; John and Barb Korstjens of Milbank; and Jim and Mary Korstjens of Milbank; two daughters: Kathy and husband Gary Pillatzke of Ortonville, MN; and Teresa Krier of Centennial, CO; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law: Gladys Van Stralen of Milbank. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Margaret Mary; three sisters: Mary Lang, Gertrude McNiff, and Kay Bunting; and one brother, Bernard Van Stralen.

Roy Whempner

Roy Whempner, age 80, formerly of Wilmot died August 18th at the Deuel County Memorial Hospital in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be Saturday, August 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wilmot. Father John McMullen, OSB will officiate and burial will be in the Wilmot Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the service. Casket bearers will be Eugene Whempner, David Whempner, Vernon Whempner, Mike Whempner, and Todd Whempner. Music will be provided by Tim Mundwiler, vocalist and guitarist.

Roy Wesley Whempner was born April 25, 1928, in Graceville, Minnesota. He was the son of Ernest and Mathilda (Remund) Whempner. Because of Roy’s handicap, he moved to the State Hospital in Redfield, SD as a small child. He also lived in Lake Preston and in Clear Lake.

Roy Whempner is survived by two brothers: Darold and wife Helen Whempner of Wilmot; and Max Whempner of Alcester, SD; two sisters: Phyllis Klein of Riverside, CA and Shirley Koteka of Salt Lake City, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

Vivian Ackerman

Vivian Ackerman, age 87 of Milbank, formerly of Waubay died August 13th at Golden Living Center in Milbank.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 16th at 3:00 p.m. at Calvary Assembly of God Church in Milbank. Pastor Mike Doran will officiate.

Music will be provided by Janet Liebe, organist and a vocal trio: Breanna Schmidt, Morgan Schmidt, and Kaitlyn Schmidt. Honorary bearers will be her grandchildren: Lisa Schmidt, John Gerdes, Brian Ackerman, Carol Ann Kenner, Scott Ackerman, Mark Ackerman, Mike Ackerman, Patrick Ackerman, and Joseph Ackerman.

Vivian Lorene Ackerman was born September 9, 1920, on the family farm north of Waubay, SD. She was the daughter of Harry and Emma (Bundrock) Grant. She attended rural school near Waubay. Vivian was united in marriage on November 30, 1939, with Arthur Ackerman.

Following their marriage, Vivian and Arthur lived in Aberdeen, SD one year before returning to the Waubay area. Vivian operated a frog bait business for many years. She took in laundry, did painting and wall papering. She worked as a waitress at the Round The Clock Café in Waubay for several years. She enjoyed baking, cooking, reading, and was an avid card player. She especially enjoyed her children and grandchildren.

Vivian Ackerman is survived by one daughter, Marie and husband Don Gerdes of Milbank; two sons: William and wife Judy Ackerman of Minneapolis, MN; Dennis and wife Bernadette Ackerman of St. Paul, MN; 9 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren and close friends: Dollie, Eileen, Dorothy, and Vera. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, and one sister.

Ellen Marie Pillatzki

Ellen, Mrs. Bernard Pillatzki, age 80, of Bellingham, MN died August 12th at the Milbank Area Hospital - Avera Health.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, August 16th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rosen, MN. Father Bob Goblirsch will officiate and burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank from 1 – 4 p.m. and continue at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rosen beginning at 6 p.m. followed by a scripture and rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church Saturday morning, one hour prior to the Mass.

Music for the evening service will be provided by Jill Adelman, organist and music for the Mass will be provided by Susan Karels, organist and the St. Joseph Choir. Honorary bearers will be Ellen’s grandchildren. Casket bearers will be grandsons: Jacob Montag, Frank Moser, Joseph Nelson, Aaron Pavelko, Jordan Pillatzki, Joshua Pillatzki, and Martin Pillatzki. Lectors will be Loretta Pillatzki and Michael Rausch.

Ellen Marie (Roggenbuck) Pillatzki was born July 14, 1928, on the family farm in Walter Township. She was the daughter of Frank and Julia (Schmieg) Roggenbuck. She attended school at St. Joseph Catholic School in Rosen, MN. Ellen was diagnosed with polio on September 19, 1946. She spent nine months in the hospital and was taught how to use her Kenny sticks. She worked occasionally as a housekeeper for the priest of Big Stone. Ellen was united in marriage with Bernard Pillatzki on October 2, 1951, in Rosen.

Ellen and Bernard lived in Ortonville, MN from 1951-1956; they moved to the family farm in 1956, then in 1973, moved to a farm near Rosen. Ellen enjoyed singing and listening to music, anything from polkas to rock and roll. She enjoyed gardening, baking and preparing wonderful meals for her family. When her children were young she spent many a winter evening playing board games with them. She was an avid reader, a television game show watcher, and a puzzle enthusiast. She loved card games and played nearly every day. The Wednesday whist games with the neighbors was a given. Ellen enjoyed traveling. She knitted and crocheted many mittens and blankets for her children and grandchildren. She always enjoyed sharing a good laugh and often had jokes posted on the refrigerator. But most of all, she enjoyed and loved her family. There was always room for one more!

Ellen was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a catechism teacher. She also was a member of the Christian Mothers, St. Monica's Society, and St. Mary's Circle.

Ellen Pillatzki is survived by her husband, Bernard of Bellingham, MN; nine children: Thomas and wife Loretta Pillatzki of Milbank, SD; Richard and wife Lynette Pillatzki of Milbank, SD; Anne and husband Larry Montag of Big Stone City, SD; Jone and husband Dennis Moser of Rapid City, SD; Mark and wife Cindy Pillatzki of Corona, SD; Lynn and husband Brendan Van Sambeek of Milbank, SD; Mary and husband Mike Pavelko of Worthington, MN; Sara and husband Brad Nelson of Odessa, MN; Keith and wife Angela Pillatzki of Ames, IA; 57 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; two sisters: Jane and husband Herman Rausch of Hermosa, SD and Harriet Rausch of Big Stone City, SD; two sisters-in-law: Francis (Roggenbuck) Haas of Madison, MN and Marilyn (Roggenbuck) Ketchum of Ortonville, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister: Irene Markson and two brothers: Ralph and Bryce Roggenbuck.

Viola Berkner

Viola Berkner, age 96, a long time Milbank resident died August 8th at Park Place in Milbank.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 13th at 10:30 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Milbank. Rev. DeVern Schwenn will officiate and burial will be in the Milbank Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday at Mundwiler Funeral Home beginning at 4 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service.

Music will be provided by Terry Price, vocalist and Julie Ludwig, organist. Casket bearers will be: Daryl Stengel, Jeff Liebe, Roger Nelson, Paul Sinclair, Curt Berkner, and Jim Anderson.

Viola May (Thiele) Berkner was born May 2, 1912, in Milbank, SD. She was the daughter of William F. and Mary (Pinkert) Thiele. She attended school in Milbank and graduated from Milbank High School in 1929. Vi was united in marriage on November 30, 1935, with Arthur Berkner.

Vi was a life long resident of Milbank. She worked for Dr. Gregory for eight years and KDIO radio as the Milbank newscaster from 1962-1976. She was the activities director for St. William’s Care Center for six years, and was the first person to serve in that capacity. In 1986, Vi was honored by Governor William Jankow as a South Dakota Volunteer of the Year. Her community service covered many fields. She was responsible for the founding and organizing of the Combined Appeal Fund Drive in 1961, and for many years guided and promoted it. Vi was a charter member and past president of the Grant County Historical Society. She was in charge of the historic house committee of the Society for many years and helped to secure furnishings for it as well as to work on the cleaning and upkeep committee. She was the first coordinator for the American Red Cross blood program in GrantCounty. She was a charter member of the Milbank Hospital Auxiliary and past president of the group. She served for two years as president of District 2 of the SD Hospital Auxiliary association. She was an instrumental coordinator of the Community Concert Association.

Vi was a past matron of the Order of Eastern Star and a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a charter member and past president of the Heritage Study Club and was an active member of Central United Methodist Church.

Viola Berkner is survived by nieces and nephews: Wilferd "Buzz" and wife Dorothy Greening of Waubay, SD; Rev. William and wife Marilyn Thiele of Flemington, NJ; Audrey and husband Al Dutenhoffer of Aberdeen, SD; Chuck and wife Ann Liebe of Milbank; LaValle and wife Beverly Berkner of Ortonville, MN; Jim and wife Pat Berkner of Milbank; Ramona and husband Haven Asprey of West Concord, MN; Sharon Berkner of Rochester, MN; Carol and husband Mike Bush of Rochester, MN; Duane Bartel of Kasson, MN; and Judy and husband Richard Crain of Lytle, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, and one sister.

Donald L. Thomas

Donald L. Thomas, age 75, of Clear Lake died July 18th at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 22nd at 2:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank. Pastor Carlene Rhode will officiate and burial will be in the Milbank Cemetery.

Donald Thomas was born January 15, 1933, one of eleven children born in Milbank. He was the son of Lester and Mary Thomas. He attended rural school through the eighth grade and helped on the family farm. He served in the United States Army/Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict on small carrier boats. He also served in Spain in the late 1950’s. He was discharged in 1960 and moved to San Antonio, TX. He was united in marriage on October 24, 1956, with Patsy Jane Smith. They returned to South Dakota and worked for various farmers milking and farming.

Donald Thomas is survived by two sons: Donald Thomas, Jr. and wife Rose of Chesapeake, VA; and Michael Thomas of Chesapeake, VA; three daughters: JoNell and husband Wayne Borchert of Arizona; Tina and husband Douglas Feten of Clear Lake, SD and Doreen Jones of Arizona; 10 grandchildren; two brothers: Alfred and wife Candy Thomas of Dell Rapids, SD; and Bruce Thomas of Shawano, WI; two sisters: Peggy Jo and husband Royce Paulsen of Mesa, AZ and Irene Konshak of Milbank, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Gladys R. Routson

Mrs. Gladys Routson, age 80, of Big Stone Lake died July 18th at the Ortonville Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, July 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Big Stone City. Father Daniel Wolfgram will officiate.

Visitation will be Monday at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank beginning at 4 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Casket bearers will be Edwin Routson, Daniel Routson, Tim Routson, Michael Routson, Rob Neff, and Daniel Neff.

Music will be provided for the evening prayer service by Lauralynn Wiess, pianist and Tim Mundwiler, vocalist. Music for the Mass will be provided by Paula Rausch, guitarist and the St. Charles Choir.

Gladys Rachel (Bucy) Routson was born December 14, 1927, in Milbank, SD. She was the daughter of John and Martha Bucy. She graduated from Milbank High School. She was united in marriage on November 28, 1947 with Edwin Joseph Routson.

The couple formerly lived in Minneapolis, MN; West Chicago, IL; enjoyed their winters at Daytona, FL; and their summers on Big Stone Lake, SD. Gladys was a devote Catholic. Her proudest accomplishment in life was raising her eight children providing an environment filled with love, patience and kindness. She took great delight with every grandchild and great grandchild. She made each and everyone feel special and loved.

Gladys was an avid gardener which was apparent to all who visited her home.

Gladys is survived by four sons: Edwin and wife Brenda Routson of Big Stone City, SD; Daniel Routson of Elburn, IL; Timothy Routson of Elburn, IL; and Michael and wife Brenda Routson of Waterman, IL; three daughters: Susan and husband Mike Wiess of West Baden Springs, IN; Martha and husband Dwight Beeks of West Chicago, IL; and Colleen and husband Greg Kotlowski of Lakewood, IL; a son-in-law: Jim Neff of Crystal Lake, IL. 19 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edwin; one daughter, Christine; one sister, and one brother.
