Richard Arnold Knebel

Richard Arnold Knebel was born August 25, 1915, on a farm northeast of Roslyn, SD. He was the son of Paul and Hattie (Fink) Knebel. He attended a rural school near Roslyn. He was united in marriage on October 15, 1941, with Irene Ann Bruner.

Richard and Irene farmed together on the Knebel homestead northeast of Roslyn, SD until 1950.They purchased their own farm five miles southwest of New Effington, SD and there they raised nine children. Richard and Irene retired from farming in 1976, and soon they moved into New Effington.

Richard moved to Milbank, SD eleven years later to be close to his wife, Irene, who was living at the Golden Living Center. He later also became a resident. Irene passed away on October 21, 2007.

Richard enjoyed farming, woodworking, nature, visiting, reading and helping others. His greatest joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren, and family.

Richard’s memory is lovingly cherished by his eight children: Renetta Bingham of Fairbault, MN; Nyla Olauson of Sioux Falls, SD; Junette Carlson of Renton, WA; Arnold and wife Sharon Knebel of Webster, SD; Thomas and wife Sheila Knebel of Valley Springs, SD; Timothy and wife Trinda Knebel of Brandon, SD; Sara Lee and husband Jim Dolan of Granite Falls, WA; Gerard and wife Katie Knebel of Tacoma, WA; daughter-in-law: Mary Ann Knebel of Milbank, SD; 22 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Lambert and wife Lucille Knebel of Sisseton, SD; and one sister in law: Verona Knebel of Roslyn, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Hattie Knebel; his wife, Irene Knebel; one son, Roland Richard Knebel; one granddaughter, Stacey Marie Gaikowski; one great grandson, Adam Richardt; three brothers: Paul Knebel, Dan Knebel and Robert Knebel; and three sisters: Hattie Keintz, Isabelle Knebel and Amanda Michlitch.

Dorothea A. (Aschwege) Poppen

Dorothea A. (Aschwege) Poppen was born March 31, 1914, in Geneseo Township, Roberts County, SD. She was the daughter of Gerhard and Marie (Reil) Aschwege. She attended rural school at Geneseo #5. She was united in marriage on September 27, 1942, with Edward E. Poppen.

Dorothea farmed with her husband in Roberts County and later was a cook at the Foss Café in Wilmot. They retired from farming and moved into Wilmot in 1980.Edward died March 22, 1981.Dorothea later moved to Milbank where she has since resided.

Dorothea was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Milbank. She enjoyed gardening and traveling.

Dorothea Poppen is survived by two nieces: Shirley and husband Louis Voeltz of Big Stone City and Ramona and husband Ron Phillips of Eagle Lake, MN; three nephews: Howard and wife Jean Quade of Corona; Don and wife Karen Quade of Twin Brooks; and Ken and wife Myra Quade of Corona; and a dear friend, Mary Whiting of Milbank. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, and three sisters.

Bud Haukos

Orin “Bud” Haukos, age 84, of Ortonville died March 26th at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 31st at 2:00 p.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville. Rev. Marlene Elstrom will officiate and burial will be in the Mound Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday at Mundwiler Funeral Home from 4- 7 p.m.; Sunday at First English Lutheran Church from 4 – 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday, one hour prior to the service. Military honors will be provided by the V.F.W. Big Stone Lake Post # 3964 and Charlie Company 1-151. Honorary bearers will be Bud’s nieces, nephews, and Mary’s children and spouses. Casket bearers will be: Tom Graham, Bob Loraff, Bob Goergen, Keith Giese, and Delbert Petersen.

Orin Lenny Haukos was born December 30, 1923, in Madison, MN. He was the son of Norman and Julia (Ronglien) Haukos. He was baptized at Heggere Lutheran Church in Madison, MN and confirmed at Holden Lutheran Church in Beardsley, MN. He attended rural school near Beardsley and attended Beardsley High School.

Bud worked on the family farm until he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He faithfully served during World War II in the South Pacific Theater. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Minnesota and farmed for a few more years. He purchased the Ortonville Ambulance and Cab Service, then later sold. On March 1, 1952, Bud was employed by the city of Ortonville as a police officer and ambulance operator. Bud was united in marriage on March 12, 1954, with Gisela Kietzke at First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville.

On June 15, 1965, Bud was appointed Sheriff of Big Stone County by the county board of commissioners to complete the term of the late Sheriff Stanton. He was elected as Sheriff of Big Stone County in November of 1967 and was reelected without opposition for five terms. Bud retired on January 7, 1987, after serving 34 years, 9 months in law enforcement. Gisela died July 30, 1987.

Bud was a member and Past Commander of the V.F.W. Big Stone Lake Post # 3964.He was a faithful member of First English Lutheran Church, serving in leadership offices and was a Sunday School teacher. He was a member and held offices for the West Central Police Officer’s Association, Minnesota Sheriff’s Association, and was a member of the National Sheriff’s Association. He was a member of the Odessa Rod and Gun Club, was a First Aid instructor, and was a member of the Mound Cemetery Board.

Bud was blessed with a very special friend, Mary Gustafson, and spent many enjoyable years together.

Bud Haukos is survived by four sons: Norman, Michael, and John and wife Zuki, all of Ortonville, MN and Timothy of St. Cloud MN; one daughter: Stephanie and husband Jamie Swenson of Fergus Falls, MN; five grandchildren: Morgan, Edison, Joshua, Leigh, and Susan; a very special friend, Mary Gustafson of Ortonville, MN; three sisters: Eileen Adolphson of Ortonville, MN; Selma and husband Vernon Ness of Dawson, MN and Addie Hanson of Hudson, WI; two sisters-in-law: Ann Vaage of Correll, MN and Mary Haukos of Beardsely, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister, Norma and two brothers, Gale and Norris.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Nicholas A. Weber

Nick Weber, age 90, of Milbank, a former long time Strandburg area resident died March 20th at Golden Living Center in Milbank.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, March 25th at 10:30 a.m. at Annunciation Catholic Church in Revillo. Father Ken Lulf will officiate and burial will be in the Tabor Lutheran Cemetery in Strandburg.

Visitation will be Monday at the church beginning at 5 p.m. with a scripture and rosary service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning, one hour prior to the Mass.

Honorary bearers will be all his nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren. Casket bearers will be: Todd Weber, Scott Weber, Jason Weber, David Weber, Tony Weber, Jack Weber, and Bob Weber.

Music will be provided by Millie Roggenbuck, organist; Paul Peterson, vocalist and Verla Peterson, accompanist.

Nicholas Anton Weber was born June 12, 1917, on a farm near Goodwin, SD. He was the son of John Henry and Rosa (Ramel) Weber. He attended rural school and also one year of agriculture school in Brookings, SD. He and his brother helped the Walsh brothers bale hay at South Shore, SD. Nick moved to Tacoma, WA and lived with his sister, Ann and worked for a lumber company and also was a welder at the shipyards for Sea-Tac Ship Company.

Nick was united in marriage on August 16, 1941, with Ardys Luvilla Pruno at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Tacoma, WA. They were blessed with a son, Donald, on November 17, 1942. In 1945, they returned to South Dakota and bought a farm south of Strandburg. Together, they farmed until 1979. They moved into Strandburg and resided there until ill heath forced Nick to move to Golden Living Center in Milbank in December of 2007.

While Nick was on the farm, he also worked for the ASC office and measured land and other duties, and enjoyed his job. He planted many trees and walked many miles. He enjoyed fishing at Round Lake and spent any free minute at the lake teaching his grandsons to fish. He operated a repair shop and fixed windows, made many picture frames, and wind chimes and collected hundreds of caps.

In 1991, Nick, his wife, and others helped restore the Stage Coach House near Troy, SD. People enjoyed attending picnics and celebrations there. Nick enjoyed people, dogs, and watching birds. He had a great sense of humor and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Nick Weber is survived by his wife, Luvilla of Milbank, SD; one son and daughter-in-law: Donald and Carol Weber of Milbank, SD; three grandsons: Todd and wife Sherri Weber; Scott and wife Dawn Weber, and Jason and wife Trisha Weber; seven great grandchildren: Erin, Garrett, Jessica, Colby, Carmen, Cecilia, and Moriah; seven brothers: John Weber of Strandburg, SD; Albert and wife Shirley Weber of Watertown, SD; Merle and wife Rita Weber of Watertown, SD; Robert and wife Shirley Weber of Clear Lake, SD; Roy and wife Katie Weber of Strandburg, SD; Eldon and wife Marge Weber of Tacoma, WA; Joe and wife Bert Weber of Tacoma, WA; a sister-in-law: Velma "Tootie" Weber of Revillo, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Ambrose Weber; two sisters: Ann Jellesma and Berniece Weber; a sister-in-law: Loretta; three nephews: Allen, Mike, and Dale, and two nieces, Roseann and Lucy.

Peg Miller

Vera "Peg" Miller, age 80 of Wilmot died March 18th at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 21st at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot. Rev. DeVern Schwenn will officiate and burial will be in the Wilmot Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday at Mundwiler Faith Chapel in Wilmot from 4 - 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the service.

Music will be provided by Neoma Ballhagen, organist and Ken Cameron, vocalist. Casket bearers will be her grandsons: Dustin Miller, Dave Barrow, Todd Zirbel, Brendan Landmark, Josh Landmark, and Terry Zirbel. Honorary bearers will be all family and friends, especially her coffee friends at the Cattleman's Diner.

Vera Lorraine "Peg" Miller was born August 13, 1927, in Enterprise Township, Roberts County, SD. She was the daughter of Oscar and Olga (Sundahl) Seal. She attended school at Enterprise # 1, Hammer, SD and in Sisseton, SD. She graduated from Sisseton High School in 1945. She was united in marriage on September 28, 1947, at Wilmot, SD with Arie Miller.

Peg was employed at Coast to Coast and Wilmot Hardware from 1978-2001, in addition to working with her husband on the family farm. She served on the school board for Lee #2 for several years and enjoyed working at the polling places during several elections. Peg enjoyed her four children and especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow. She enjoyed several travels, trips, and tours that were shared with her girlfriends, and all the "buzz" at the Cattleman's Diner coffee hour.

Peg enjoyed her flower gardens, cooking and baking, and all kinds of music and dancing. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and attending her grandchildren's school and sports events. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot.

Peg Miller is survived by two daughters: Judith Zirbel of Watertown, SD and Bonnie Barrow of Sioux Falls, SD; one son, Kent and wife Dawn Miller of Watertown, SD; one son-in-law: Doug Comes of Waverly, SD; 15 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; one brother, Orlie and wife Martha Seal of Battleground, WA and one sister, Myrtis and husband Richard Erickson of Portland, OR.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arie, one daughter, Donna Comes, and two brothers, Lyall and Joseph Seal.

Maymie Madsen

Maymie Madsen, age 83, of Milbank died March 16th at the Milbank Area Hospital - Avera Health.

Services will be Thursday, March 20th at 2:00 p.m. at American Lutheran Church in Milbank. Rev. Craig Werling will officiate and burial will be in the Milbank Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday at Mundwiler Funeral Home from 5 - 7 p.m. and continue at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the service. Music will be provided by Carol Ydstie, organist and Sue Goosen, vocalist.

Maymie Marie Madsen was born September 30, 1924, in Roberts County, SD. She was the daughter of Louie and Minnie (Biel) Osterloh. She attended rural school in Roberts County. Prior to her marriage, Maymie lived and worked in Chicago, IL; Seattle, WA; Portland, OR; in California and in Sioux Falls, SD. She was united in marriage on August 13, 1951, with Louis M. Madsen, in Ortonville, MN.

Maymie and her husband moved to the west coast, living in California and Oregon and resided there for 30 years. They returned to South Dakota and settled in Milbank. Louis died in February of 1983. Maymie remained in Milbank until her death.

Maymie was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Milbank. She loved animals, especially her horse, Lady and her dogs. While living at Golden Living Center, Maymie enjoyed playing Bingo. She had a great heart and much generosity. She gave all her Bingo "winnings" away, which were stuffed animals and toys, and gave them to children in need. She will be remembered for her kind spirit.

Maymie Madsen is survived by one son, Wayne Madsen of Umatilla, Oregon; one grandson, Paul Madsen; two sisters: Beverly and husband Dennis Lubbers of Browns Valley, MN and Blanche and husband Don Heilman of Wilmot. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one sister, Jean Osterloh.

Charline Mary Jurgens

Charline Jurgens, age 91, of Milbank died March 10th at St. William’s Care Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, March 13th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Father Ken Lulf will officiate and burial will be in the St. Lawrence Cemetery. Con-celebrants will be Father John McMullen, OSB and Father Matthew Kowalski, OSB.

Visitation will be Wednesday at Mundwiler Funeral Home beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a scripture and rosary service at 7 p.m. and will be conducted by Father Dennis Quinkert. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Music will be provided by Nancy Johnson, organist; Tim Jurgens, vocalist, and Rob Kraemer, vocalist and the St. Lawrence Funeral Choir.

Honorary bearers will be her granddaughters: Kristi Bickelhaupt, Kari Kraemer, Lori Essig, JoAnna Olson, Jennifer Jurgens, Liza Holbert, Abby Kemp, and Cali Skaarer.Casket bearers will be his grandsons: Mark Bryan, Jon Bryan, Tom Bryan, Tony Jurgens, Thad Jurgens, Tyler Jurgens, Mitch Jurgens, Josh Jurgens, Dan Jurgens, Eric Jurgens, and Isac Skaarer.

Charline Mary (Allen) Jurgens was born March 10, 1917, in Milbank, SD. She was the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Rowan) Allen. She attended St. Lawrence Catholic School and graduated from Milbank High School in 1935.She worked in the Welfare Office at the Grant County Court House until her marriage on September 6, 1937, with Edward H. Jurgens.

Charline was a woman of contrasts. She was ladylike … and opinionated. She lived by the Ten Commandments, yet she was loving and tolerant of those who did not keep them. She was frugal and generous. She was not a talker, but she was a masterful communicator. She was full of humility, but intensely proud of her children and grandchildren.

Charline was what many today would consider a domestic artist. A spotless home, and particularly a warm kitchen, was her canvas. She was known for her specialties: dill pickles, strawberry jam, banana bread, peanut cookies and the highly sought-after peanut croquettes. It is a rare person who can work such magic with the simplest of ingredients. If it is possible to show love by doing for others, Charline exhibited incredible love for her family and friends every minute that she was slicing, stirring, chopping, boiling and baking. We are all so fortunate to have enjoyed her love, sweet enough to taste.

Charline was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and was active with the Altar Society. She was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Charline Jurgens is survived by two daughters: Ann and husband James Bryan of Sun City West, AZ and Teresa and husband Dick Skaarer of Milbank; two sons: Dick and wife Robbie Jurgens of Watertown, SD and Michael wife Tracy Jurgens of Aberdeen, SD; one daughter-in-law: Barbara Jurgens of Brandon, SD; 19 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; one brother, Lyle Allen of Braham, MN; two sisters-in-law: Joyce Allen of Milbank and Donna Schuneman of Scotts Bluff, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, David, three sisters: Joyce, Betty, and Helen and two brothers, Jim Allen and Claire Schuneman.

Martha Englund

Martha Englund, age 104, a former long time Revillo area resident died March 8, 2008, in Hopkins, MN.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 14th at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Revillo. Rev. Keith Smith will officiate and burial will be in the Revillo Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the service.

Vocalists will be Judy Carlson and Donna Erickson.

Martha Katherine (Smith) Englund was born February 20, 1904, at Caledonia, ND. She was the daughter of Peter Christopher and Charlotte Marthea (Ike) Smith. She was baptized in 1904, and confirmed in 1917, in the Norwegian Lutheran Church near her home at Caledonia. She earned a lifetime teaching certificate for North Dakota from Mayville Normal School, Mayville, ND. Martha was an elementary school teacher in Nielsville, MN; Caledonia, Grenora, and Wild Rose, ND; Iverness, MT; Ipswich and Revillo, SD.

She was united in marriage on December 21, 1939, with Oscar Valfred Englund, who was a farmer and rural mail carrier in the Revillo, SD area. Following his death in 1959, Martha worked at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN in the cafeteria while their daughter attended college. Martha took classes at Concordia and Moorhead State and returned to teaching in Revillo in 1963. She retired in 1967.

Martha continued to live where she and her husband, Oscar had lived since their marriage. In November of 2000, she went to live with her daughter and son-in-law in Hopkins, MN.

Martha’s favorite hobby was reading. She was disappointed when her eyes could not be repaired in the late 1990’s.She also did a lot of sewing and knitting, especially in her early years of marriage. She enjoyed parties with food and visiting and was an excellent cook. She belonged to a bridge club in Revillo, the mission society, the WELCA at Trinity Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School, and confirmation classes. She was an election judge and was active in the National and State Rural Letter Carrier’s Auxiliary. She had faith in God. She was a lot of fun and was very healthy and communicating and walking with some aid until she died.

Martha Englund is survived by one daughter, Lee Julette Larson of Hopkins, MN and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents, husband, three brothers, ten sisters, and son-in-law, Ronald.

Mary Lou Reil

Mary Lou (Mrs. Loren) Reil, age 75 of rural Wilmot died March 6th at her home.

Funeral services will be Sunday, March 9th at 2:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Milbank. Rev. Jason Schulz will officiate and burial will be in the Garfield Lutheran Cemetery, Roberts County, SD.

Visitation will be Saturday at Mundwiler Faith Chapel in Wilmot from 4 – 7 p.m. and will continue at the church on Sunday, one hour prior to the service. The organist will be Gloria Hanson. Casket bearers will be: Matt Beseth, Randy Reil, Vic Reil, Larry Reil, Mike Frerichs, and Lynn Maass.

Mary Lou Reil was born August 17, 1932, near Montevideo, MN. She was the daughter of Herbert and Vernie (Puckett) Macziewski. She lived in St. Paul, MN as a child and graduated from high school. She was united in marriage on June 29, 1968, with Loren Reil in Wilmot, SD.

Mary Lou farmed with her husband in Roberts County. She was blessed with two sons, Michael and David, and enjoyed her life as a mother and homemaker. In earlier years, she was a Sunday School teacher and active with the ladies aid of the church. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Milbank.

Mary Lou Reil is survived by her husband, Loren Reil of rural Wilmot; two sons: Michael and wife Linda Reil of Lakeville, MN and David Reil of Corona, SD; four grandchildren; two sisters: Delores and husband Gordon Beseth of Roseville, MN and Ruth and husband Dewey Whitmer of Arden Hills, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Earl Kreutner

Earl Kreutner, age 81, of Revillo died February 29th at Golden Living Center in Milbank.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 4th at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Revillo. Rev. Kim Kanitz will officiate and burial will be in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery at Albee.

Visitation will be Monday at Mundwiler Funeral Home beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to the services.

The organist will be Carol Street. Honorary bearers will be Earl's friends and neighbors and Glen and Barb Weide, Mel and Bev Weide, Harold and Jeanette Kruse, Alan Brandenburger, Lloyd Schoenfeld, Gene and Linda Limberg, Orville and Delores Magedanz, Denny and Margaret Skoog, Denny and Carol Siedschlag.

Casket bearers will be his grandchildren: Tom Kreutner, Brian Granquist, Nathan Granquist, Josh Kreutner, Jacob Kreutner, Austin Kreutner, Greg Kreutner, Renae Kreutner, Steph Kreutner, Brianna Kreutner, Tyler Kreutner, Ruth Kreutner, Julia Kreutner, Connor Kreutner, and Emma Kreutner.

Military Honors will be provided by the Marietta American Legion Post # 156.

Earl Otto Kreutner was born September 22, 1926, in Deuel County, SD. He was the son of Fred and Minnie (Krause) Kreutner. He attended school in Revillo, SD and graduated from Revillo High School in 1944. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II., enlisting on March 15, 1945. He was a Seaman, First Class and served on the USS Saidur and the USS Currituck. He was honorably discharged on July 29, 1946. He returned to South Dakota and was united in marriage with Mavis Sackreiter on July 23, 1954, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank.

Following their marriage, Earl and Mavis farmed together in Lowe Township, Deuel County, south of Revillo. They resided at the family farm following their retirement. Earl was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Revillo and served on the church council. He was a member of the Marietta American Legion Post # 156. He served on the Lowe Township Board. Earl enjoyed many outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing.

Earl Kreutner is survived by his wife, Mavis; one daughter: Janet and husband Bruce Granquist of Milbank, SD and their children: Brian and Nathan Granquist; six sons: Arlin and wife Marie Kreutner of Milbank, SD and their children: Tom and Renae Kreutner; Roger and wife Nancy Kreutner of Revillo, SD and their children: Josh, Steph and Greg Kreutner; Wayne and wife Carol Kreutner of St. Cloud, MN and their children: Jacob and Austin; Dale and wife Sandy Kreutner of Brandon, SD and their children: Ruth and Julia Kreutner; Neil and wife Callie Kreutner of Valentine, NE and their children: Connor and Emma Kreutner; and Bruce and wife Christine Kreutner of Brookings, SD and their children: Tyler and Brianna Kreutner; one sister, Ellen and husband Costin (Skip) Powell of Griffin, Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Al and Floyd Kreutner and two sisters: Vi Menach and Laurene Walz.

Toni Pavelsky

Toni Pavelsky, age 58, of Sioux Falls, formerly of South Shore died February 26th at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home. Rev. Janine Rew-Werling will officiate and burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in South Shore. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Monday.

Toni Gail Pavelsky was born January 4, 1950, in Long Beach, CA. She was the daughter of Solomon and Alice (Applebaum) Pavelsky. She graduated in 1968, from Lakewood (CA) High School. She was united in marriage on April 6, 1969, with Raymond Van Hulzen.

Toni and her husband operated a trucking company in California until 1986. In 1991, Toni worked in the bar business, operating two bars in Highland, CA. In 1998, she moved to South Shore, SD and operated the city liquor store and grocery store. She moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 2001, and most recently was operating a steak house in Salem, SD.

Toni was a very ambitious, driven, and hard working lady. She will be missed by her family and friends.

Toni is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Tiffany and Marvin Burns of Buhl, ID and Mikel and Dennis Grear of Milbank; seven grandchildren: Heather Burns, Samantha Burns, Adam McLean, Dylan Burns, Tyler Grear, Allsion Grear, and Piper Grear; one brother and sister-in-law: Robert and Nancy Pavelsky of Corona, CA and Toni’s significant other, Reid Gerdes of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Bobbie Thorne

Bobbie Thorne, age 79, of Ortonville died February 23rd at the Ortonville Hospital.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 26th at 2:00 p.m. at Tabor United Methodist Church in Big Stone City. Rev. Beth Conrad will officiate and burial will be in the Milbank Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church, one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

The organist will be Pat Kunz and the vocalist will be Lindy Lu Hammer. Honorary bearers will be: Tim Burdick, Tom Wilson, Tim Wilson, Duane Hay, Don Richardson, and Jim Kaercher. Casket bearers will be: Dan Warren, Gary Henneberg, Derald Hay, Gene Burdick, Len Heinen, and Wendell Hanson.

Bobbie Lucille (Warren) Thorne was born September 6, 1928, in Okmulgee, OK. She was the daughter of LaVan and Alma (Brink) Warren. As a young girl, Bobbie grew up in a happy home with two older brothers and parents who adored her. She had a beautiful voice, sang at weddings, and acted in plays. She was beautiful, had a joyful personality, and many friends. She attended college at Briar Cliff in Sioux City, IA and traveled extensively. Bobbie's father was in the construction business, and while he was on a job in Ortonville, she fell in love with Bill Thorne, and they were married in 1950. Bill's best friend, Derald Hay was the Best Man at their wedding. They lived on a farm near Big Stone City, SD, had a happy marriage and two adorable children, Gerry and Jodi. Bobbie's life was very happy until a tragic car accident on October 1, 1962. Bobbie's husband and children were killed, and she was severely injured. Until that day, she was a beautiful, happy, healthy woman with a wonderful family and a good life. Weeks later when she regained consciousness after the accident, she was forever changed. She was not only severely broken, crushed and crippled from the accident, but had also cruelly lost her beloved family. Her life was never the same, but she courageously pulled herself together, was office manager at the Ortonville Independent Newspaper until her retirement, and helped her mother run Warren's Antiques in Big Stone City. She enjoyed her work at the Independent, and stated "I like the challenge of doing a job and doing it to the best of my abilities." She took care of her mother, Alma Warren, until her death. She played an important part in the lives of her nieces and nephew, and will forever be greatly loved by them. She lived the last several years of her life at Fairway View Assisted Living Facility in Ortonville and at Golden Living Center in Milbank, SD.

Bobbie Thorne is survived by one brother, Joe D. Warren, of Redwing, MN; two nieces: Carol Sue and husband Tholen Haynes of Destin, FL and Linda and husband Don Richardson of Red Wing, MN; one nephew: Joe D. Warren, Jr. of Wichita, KS and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, children, and one brother.

Memorials in Bobbie's name may be given to the Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge, 44843 County Road 19, Odessa, MN 56276 (320-273-2191).

Lynne Hopkins

Lynne (Mrs. Wayne) Hopkins, age 52 of Wilmot died February 13th at her residence.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 16th at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot. Rev. DeVern Schwenn will officiate and burial will be in the Peever Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday at the Mundwiler Faith Chapel in Wilmot beginning at 4 p.m. followed by a family prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the services.

The organist will be Neoma Ballhagen. Casket bearers will be: Tom Anderson, Mike Lewno, Maylon Libbey, Revay Kurrasch, Dale Rice and Alan Lekness.

Preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Sheilah Tostenson, Lynne Hopkins, age 52, found peace and was restored to full health in Christ on February 13, 2008. She passed away at her home, in Wilmot, in the care of her family. Lynne is survived by her husband on 33 years, Wayne Hopkins; daughters, NiNi and Hally Hopkins, and a sister, Leslie Tostenson. Without question, Lynne valued family. She made visiting relatives and attending get-togethers a priority. Her enthusiastic journey in faith was an encouragement to many. She spared no one her witness. Her laughter, zest for life, and warmth will be missed by family, friends, and the many customers of her bookstore business in Watertown, appropriately named, Blessings.
