Harlan J. "JR" Parker

"This was our Dad's personality and we'd like to honor him with this...." Penny Parker Tower Notice!!

I, Harlan J. “JR” Parker, have taken a permanent vacation! I left on August 25, 2007 from Ortonville, MN, after having lived 86 years, 6 months and 3 days!

I was born on Feb. 22, 1921 to Harlan and Pauline (Piersol) Parker in Delhi, MN, in my Grandmother’s bed. I moved to Ortonville at the age of two when my father bought the Pioneer Meat Market. I attended Ortonville High School and luckily graduated in 1939. I was enrolled at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa until the attack on Pearl Harbor. At that time, I dropped out and enlisted in the U.S. Army as a member of the 144th Infantry Regiment. On Nov. 18, 1942 I married LaVerne (Babe) Gunderson of Montevideo, MN. She remained my “war bride” throughout my entire life! I was shipped to Europe in March, 1944 as a Corporal and machine gun squad leader. There I was assigned as a replacement to the 83rd Infantry Division. I served in Normandy until I was seriously wounded in July of 1944. After spending time in a variety of hospitals, I returned to Ortonville during the autumn of 1947.

Since working in Dad’s meat market was now out of the picture, I enrolled in and completed my degree in watchmaking and repair in Elgin, IL and worked for a short time in Ortonville before settling in Aberdeen, SD, where I worked at Kirkpatrick’s Jewelry. I started my own watch repair business and moved back to Big Stone City in 1971, retiring in 1983.Many, many hours were spent leaned over that work bench!!

I was baptized and confirmed in the First Congregational Church in Ortonville and was a member there for many years, serving on the church board. In my latter years I became a member of Tabor United Methodist Church in Big Stone City. I was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion and had served on the Big Stone Bank Board of Directors.

The love of my life was my precious wife, Babe. We raised two wonderful daughters and felt blessed by our four granddaughters, of whom we are extremely proud! I was an ardent reader, staying up most nights until 1 or 2 in the morning, unable to put a book down! I also wrote an autobiography of the first 27 years of my life. I had a passion for and extensive knowledge of American History, specifically of all the wars our country has been involved in. In my earlier years I loved to hunt and fish, often going out before school or work to get my limit. I also enjoyed sing-a-longs, led by Babe, big band music, and Babe and I were avid dancers, dancing at the VFW nearly every Saturday night! We had many wonderful friends and loved to have people over to our home for some munchie mix, a meal, or evening desert! Babe and I cherished our travels and spent 14 memory making winters in the Gulf Shore, AL area. In 2001, we were surprised and honored by being named Grand Marshals of the InkaPa Days in Big Stone City.

During the last few years that I lived in Big Stone City, I treasured sitting in my lakeside porch viewing the ever changing lake and the wildlife that inhabited it. In September of 2005, Babe and I moved to Fairway View Assisted Living Apartments where we enjoyed old and new friends and were deeply appreciative of the excellent help we received. In February of 2006, I became a resident of Northridge Nursing Home - my final year and a half included forming a whole new “family” of the most wonderful Northridge employees - every day I woke up surrounded by love! I was lucky enough to have Babe join me there is September of 2006.

Surviving me is my most cherished wife of 64 years, Babe; my wonderful daughters - Pamela Schneck and her husband Richard of Clinton, MN, Penelope Tower and her husband Scott of North Mankato, MN; my four precious granddaughters - Sarah Tower (Peaches), Karissa Schneck Dennis (Polly) and her husband Ryan, Bethany Schneck Stolle (Pumpkin) and her husband, Brent, AnneTower (Princess);my most special great-granddaughter Aleya Dennis, and special “adopted” granddaughter, Ann Dauffenbach. Also outliving me is my baby brother, Vincent (Binny), and his wife Donna, brother-in-law James Whiteside, brother-in-law Donald Pflueger, loving nieces and nephews and many loving and special friends. Those going before me were my sisters Phyllis and Virginia and sister-in-laws Adelaide Peterson and Jean Peterson and brother-in-law Vic Peterson.

I know that my life was richly blessed and I also know that I had many shortcomings (forgive me for those)! I hope that you will always remember me for my indomitable spirit, quick wit and sense of humor, my story telling and mischievous eyes, my hugs and generous heart, and my pockets full of Nips candy! And always remember - to love and be loved are the greatest things on Earth!!

If you are interested, my funeral services will be held at Tabor United Methodist Church in Big Stone City on September 4 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Beth Conrad officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on September 3 and one hour prior to the service at the Church. Burial will be at Mound Cemetery in Ortonville. In lieu of flowers, I would prefer memorials be given to the Central Park Restoration which is working to clean up and renew the park down the ravine from the old Parker house in Ortonville. The original Parker kids and all of our own children spent so many fun hours there!!

I would mostly want you to come if you can share a story, a laugh, and a hug - and eat a Nip or two! Oh, and please wear your dancing clothes – this is a celebration! We’ll meet again, sometime…
