Marie Todd

Burial will be in the Gettysburg Cemetery under the direction of Ripley Memorial Chapel. Visitation will begin Friday at 5:00 PM at Ripley Memorial Chapel in Gettysburg. A Family service will be held at 7:00 PM Friday. Mrs. Todd passed away January 30, in Salt Lake City , Utah. She moved from Gettysburg to Salt Lake City in 2005 where she made her home with Alvina (her eldest daughter) and Dan Wall.

Marie was born February 25, 1915 in Vananda, Montana to Christian Ulrich and Elizabeth Leicht Ulrich the second of fourteen children. The family moved, when Marie was a child, to Tolstoy, South Dakota where they lived for many years. Marie and her older sister were already married, and so remained in South Dakota, when their parents relocated to Lodi, California in 1936.

Marie married Arthur Ernest Todd on February 4, 1934 and to this union three children were born. They farmed neared Gorman until finally moving to a farm five miles east of Gettysburg in 1940. Upon retirement, they relocated to Redfield and remained there until Arthur passed away in 1981. Marie moved back to Gettysburg at that time and lived in the Park Apartments for many years.

Marie loved cooking, baking, flowers, gardening, reading, her family and her Lord with all her heart. She was a world-class farm wife and mother caring for a huge garden, raising flocks of chickens and cooking for hired men. She canned and preserved everything from pickles to meat and prepared the most delicious, hearty meals. Everyone loved to visit her house. When they retired from the farm, Marie cooked at a Redfield nursing home for two years and both she and Arthur worked at the Redfield State Hospital and School. Marie was devoted to “her boys” and she remained there for 13 ½ years. She appeared quiet and shy but proved over and over again her strength, determination and courage as she lived alone for many years. She worked hard all her life and loved every minute of it. Not being able to continue doing these things was her greatest frustration as arthritis pain robbed her of mobility during her later years. Arthur and Marie were members of the Redfield Methodist Church and the Gettysburg Methodist Church.
