Earl Sandstrom

Funeral services for Earl Sandstrom, age 92, of Mobridge will be 12:00 PM, Monday, November 30, 2009 at the Norway Lutheran Church north of Glenham. Burial will be at the Norway Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of the Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Earl passed away November 23, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge.

Earl Sandstrom lived 92 wonderful years. Even though he was old in years he was young at heart. He brought joy to everyone he met by making them laugh with his quick wit and contagious smile. He had a genuine spirit and a way with people that made them feel comfortable and loved.

Earl was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 27, 1917. He moved to Brooklyn, New York with his parents and sisters where he attended high school and met his wife, Aase. He started playing on a semi-pro football team at age 17. During one game, he “leveled” a boy on the opposing team who he knew was Aase’s sweetheart. That boy was carried from the field, and Earl won over Aase! Although an unusual way for spouses to meet, they married and this past Sept 28th celebrated 69 years of marriage.

After high school, Earl worked for E. W. Bliss Company and the New York Stock Exchange before finally joining the Missouri Pacific Railroad. There was a break in his career when he served in the US Army as an officer during WW II and the Korean War. After serving in the Army until 1952, Earl returned to work for the Missouri Pacific to become a very successful businessman. Earl retired in 1982 at age 65 in Chicago, Illinois.

He was able to send each of his children to college: Paul and Kurt graduated from Luther College in Iowa and Cris graduated from Augustana College in South Dakota. This fulfilled a long term goal that was one of his top priorities in life.

After retirement Earl and Aase lived near each of their children and families, Kurt in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Cris in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Paul in Seattle, Washington. During his time living near each of his children, his life and those around him was greatly enriched. His family is left with so many wonderful memories of times shared together. Earl and Aase were very active in the Lutheran Church, participating in the congregations while actively helping to build churches in New Jersey, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming.

Earl is survived by his wife Aase; children Paul (Mary), Kurt (Dorothy), and Christine (Tom Owens); grandchildren Josh, Noah, Suzy, Freya, Per, and Elizabeth; and great grandchildren Kylin, Jaydn, Elora, and Colton.
