Lewis G. (Lewie) Smith

Lewis G. (Lewie) Smith 85 of Estelline, SD and formerly of Mobridge passed away September 13, 2008 at his home in Estelline. Memorial services are being planned for October 4, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Mobridge at 2:00 PM Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.

Lewis G. Smith died on Saturday, September 13 at his home in Estelline, South Dakota surrounded by family. Lewis was born on June 12, 1923 in Elk Point, South Dakota to Minnie and Jake Smith. He grew up along the Missouri River and has been hunting and fishing most of his life. He quit school at the age of 15 (lying about his age in order to be accepted) and entered the Citizen’s Military Training Program and was sent to Fort Snelling in Minneapolis. He then tried to enlist in the Navy, when it was discovered he was color blind, he was ineligible. Determined, he then enlisted with the Seabees (a division of the Navy) and served during WWII. Dad remained a true and loyal servant of the United States of America always proud of his service. After receiving an honorable discharge he returned to South Dakota and completed his schooling in Vermillion. After graduating Lewis applied for a position with the South Dakota Game Fish & Parks and began what would be a 35 year career in August of 1946. His first assignment was in Edmunds/McPherson Counties (Ipswich). Upon one of his many visits to the Court House the Deputy Treasurer, Dorothy Fisher, caught his eye and they were married at the First Baptist Church in Ipswich on July 12, 1947, a union that would last over 61 years. A daughter Kyle Lynne was born on May 5, 1952 in Eureka. In 1957 Lewis accepted a transfer to Mobridge as the Game Warden and Scott David was born on December 14, 1958.

Dad never knew how to live life easy. It was about being the best he could possibly be, upholding the laws he was hired to enforce and accepting no less from himself or anyone else. There are some who felt that he was too diligent in enforcing game laws, but he was a good game warden who would treat all alike, whether they were close friends, strangers, or businessmen. Through the years he became respected by everyone as a warden who was fair and his first concern was proper law enforcement. It was these principles that would not allow him to leave Mobridge even when there were many people who signed a petition for him to be transferred.

Back in those days the Wardens were on call 24 hours a day. He would leave in the middle of the night to pick up a dead deer, he was the one called when your boat quit on the reservoir or a worried family member called because a fisherman had not come home yet, he assisted farmers who were having problems with raccoons, counted rabbits in the middle of the night. In Mobridge, his territory also included the Oahe Reservoir which brought about many additional challenges when called upon for drowning retrieval. During the blizzard of 1966 Dad was out on his snowmobile rescuing three Wakpala school teachers stranded in their car for over 12 hours. Many times our family would sit in the root cellar during a tornado warning, scared to death both because of the impending storm and that Dad was out in the middle of everything. I remember living in Ipswich and dad was called to a head-on collision between a vehicle and a cattle truck. Our vehicle ended up being used as a substitute ambulance taking injured survivors to the Ipswich Hospital. I remember vividly when the gentleman came to our home weeks later to thank my father. Dad was also a die-hard South Dakotan – no state (anywhere) could compare to his beloved Dakotas. When I had my restaurant in North Carolina, Dad was the official greeter. They may have entered the doors a stranger but would leave a friend. He loved offering $1.00 to anyone who could name the faces on Mount Rushmore; and $20.00 if you could give the reason why they were selected. I believe the money my father shelled out was probably less than $5.00; therefore, they also received a history lesson.

Smitty is also responsible for a large percentage of the shelter belts in Walworth, Edmunds, and McPherson Counties. In 1983 he was nominated for the Joyce Kilmer Award. An excerpt from the nomination “Louie’s tree planting campaign intensified with each new year. Conservation Officers were commonly referred to as Game Wardens because their main duty lies in the enforcement of game laws. Lewis Smith became known as the ’Tree Warden’. The fact that Louie could effectively coordinate tree planting programs between private cooperators and the various Federal, State and Municipal Governments in a credit to his ability to organize and motivate people”. In 1982 he was recognized by the US Corps of Engineers for his outstanding cooperation .In 1983 he was selected as Outstanding Law Officer by the Mobridge Jaycees. He was also the 1978 Mystery Snowman. His list of accolades of appreciation from various groups is staggering, all a testament to Dad’s hard work and commitment to leaving a better place than he found it.

He was also a life long member of NRA, South Dakota Peace Officers Association, American Legion and the First Baptist Church in Mobridge.

In 1988, Lewis retired from the State of South Dakota and began working for Gibson’s in Mobridge as their hunting/fishing buyer and department manager. He was concerned how he would be accepted by the general public because he had arrested so many violators. However, Dad would say later that so many of the people he arrested became his good friends. In the 1980’s he suffered his first heart attack and was subsequently diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. Due to ongoing health problems he retired from Gibson’s but continued being heavily involved in his gun shop, hunting and fishing. He would brag every chance he could about mom’s ability to shoot a prairie dog at 400 yards! (Which is true).

For years Dad had wanted an elk license and in 2007 requested and received a handicap permit to shoot from the vehicle. His good friend LeRoy Brandenburger also got his license and in late November they went to the Hills to hunt Elk. Unfortunately, all they ever saw were tracks and it was when they followed tracks to a rancher’s home that dad, forgetting about his footing, got out of the vehicle to thank the rancher for flying the American Flag and fell and broke his hip.

His health, already tenuous from the Congestive Heart Failure, continued to decline. Dad was a prayer warrior and had been granted so many miracles we often referred to him as the “energizer bunny”. In June of 2008 Lewis and Dorothy sold their home in Mobridge where they had lived for over 50 years and moved to Estelline, South Dakota to be closer to family. It was here that God granted another miracle and called Dad to his heavenly home, free of pain and the affects of coronary heart disease.

The day before Lewis passed away, his nephew was picking up airplane parts in Northern California. Kenny was speaking about his Uncle in Mobridge and the gentleman said “are you talking about Lewis Smith of Mobridge, South Dakota”? “I did not know him personally but he is a South Dakota icon” …and he was.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Estelline, son Scott (Apryl) of Buffalo Lake, Mn; daughter Kyle (Arthur) Shelton of Estelline, grandchildren Jordan and Aryel Smith of Buffalo Lake and Andrea (John) Faunce of Marshall, NC, a great-grandchild scheduled to be born in April of 2009, extended family Linda and LeRoy Brandenburger of Mobridge, special neighbors Jim and Judy Curran of Mobridge, brother Earle (Dorothy) Smith of Inwood, IA, niece Celene (Randy) Olson of Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Dad touched so many lives and we invite everyone to share in his Memorial Service which will be held at the First Baptist Church in Mobridge on October 4 at 2:00 p.m.

Lewis was also involved throughout the years with the Mobridge and surrounding school districts. He often brought wildlife to schools and explained their habitat and their importance in the cycle of nature. He also taught hunter safety courses to hundreds of area residents. Memorial contributions are being accepted by the Mobridge Educational Foundation in memory of Lewis G. Smith, P.O. Box 622, Mobridge, South Dakota 57601. We are hoping to set up a scholarship in Dad’s name.

Honorary Pallbearers are: Dr. Ben Henderson (in memoriam), Leland Berndt, Mobridge; Dave Kadlecek,Hay Springs, Nebraska; Roger and Jean Gardner, Ipswich; Clint and Bonnie Rose, Little Eagle; Richard One Feather, Fort Yates; Dr. Travis Henderson, Mobridge; Dr. Ivaldo Lunardi, Watertown; Dr. Eric Murunga, Brookings; Missy Flegal and Betty Saathoff, Estelline (his hospice caretakers).

The family would also like to recognize all the employees of the Mobridge Hospital/Clinic and Golden Living Center in Mobridge who so lovingly cared for Dad during our many visits. You have a special place in our hearts.
