He attended grade school at Landreau School and high school in Mobridge. He left home when he was sixteen. He found work as a ranch hand at the Horseshoe Ranch north of Glenham and later on a ranch near Winnett, MT. He told many stories of his time and travels in Montana. He entered into the Army on December 10, 1952. On November 30, 1954 he was honorably discharged as a Corporal. Most conversations with him involved a horse or two. His weekly trip to town was usually on Thursday - sale day at the Mobridge Livestock Exchange was very important to him. Vic always joked that it was his weekly education. He loved the outdoors, his time on his four-wheeler checking cattle, and especially his rides each morning with his dog, Nick.

Milton attended rural way side school until the 8th grade. Milton worked the family farm until entering the US Army on September 7, 1942. While in the service he was a messenger and a runner. After basic training he went to Camp Carson in Colorado for maneuvers. While at Camp Carson he made a command performance for President Roosevelt by showing him how they would row their boats to Normandy. Milton also secured packages from the German’s. Milton often said he wanted everyone to remember the serious job they had. He was honorably discharged from Ft. Bliss, Texas on October 7, 1945.

Following his discharge he returned to the family farm near Glenham and began farming In 1946 he attended Auctioneer School in Mason City, Iowa and also took mechanic training. On December 31, 1950 Milton married Betty Ballensky in Akaska, SD. Alice Ducheneaux

Mass of Christian Burial for Alice Ducheneaux 98 of Promise will be 10:30 AM, CDT, Saturday, August 23 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Promise. Fr. Brian Lane Visitation will be Friday, 1:00 PM, Prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM at Kesling Funeral Home. All night wake will start at 9 PM at the Church in Promise. Alice Ducheneaux passed away August 19, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge.

Alice Dena Oltmanns was born November 30, 1909 in Quinn, SD to John and May Flowers (Bloom) Oltmanns. Her parents homesteaded in this area and Alice was their firstborn. Little did Alice know that her young life would soon be lived in many different places, including Iowa, Minnesota, North and South Dakota.

Two years later, they had moved back to Iowa (where her father was originally from) and in 1911 her brother Lloyd (son) was born. After the death of her paternal grandfather, Alice’s father took his young family and bought a farm three miles south of Madison, SD. It was here that her sister Dorothy (Babe) was born in 1916. In the late teens, the family moved into Madison and her father started working for Chase’s Grave construction. The family moved around the Dakotas and Montana for ten years. Alice’s mother would cook for the company crew. Alice and her brother would work the teams that excavated the gravel out of the pits. One of the sites she helped build was Lake Hiddenwood near Java, SD.

After ten years of construction work and her father’s worsening asthma, Alice’s father quit the business and returned to farming. They rented farms around the Java, SD area and it was here in 1928 that her sister Joy was born.

Java was also the first time in her life that she had attended the same school for longer than on year at a time. She attended high school in Java through her junior year. She stayed in town and boarded with a family. She paid her rent by working as a waitress in the family’s restaurant. She was also a member of the girl’s basketball team.

But alas, she was not able to finish high school (which she always regretted) because her father had quit farming and had decided to move his family “west river” to ranch on the Cheyenne River Reservation near Promise, SD.

It was during this time while working the ranch near Promise that Alice’s last two sisters were born in Mobridge, SD identical twins, Velma and Velda.

It was also the time that Alice, at a dance at Promise, would meet her future husband Ed Ducheneaux. They were married by a county judge of Ziebach County in Dupree on March 29, 1932.

The “Dirty 30’s” were upon this young couple when they made their first home in a one room house east of the present Arlyn Lawrence place near Promise. They raised cattle and to make ends meet, Ed, with his hounds, would hunt and trap coyotes for bounty. He also would work for various cattle companies. Alice always had chickens for eggs and meat and a cow for milk. (Something she continued to keep around until she moved off the ranch.)

Alice and Ed had five children, Edwina, Nellie, Keva, Frank, and Terry. They also raised their oldest granddaughter Kendra.

In 1940 Ed got the mail route between Promise and Moreau River Junction. In 1942, Ed and Alice purchased the Promise store from Jack McNeely. It had a post office, gas station, and grocery store. Alice delivered the mail, filled your car with gas, and bagged your groceries. They operated the store until 1959 when Promise was declared “taken area” by the Corps of Engineers to build the new Lake Oahe. The store was closed and Ed and Alice moved three miles south of Promise on the Virgin Creek. Most of the old store building was moved to this place and made into their home where she continued to live with Ed until his death in 1975. She later moved to a home near Promise. This home became a stopping place for many relatives and friends who could not make it home when the rain turned the gumbo to mud or the snow became too deep to go through.

On April 13, 1998, by proclamation of the Cheyenne river Sioux Tribe, Alice was made an honorary member of the Tribe. She proudly kept the certificate of this acknowledgement on her wall. Alice was a “straight-shooter”. She would tell you like it was (in sometimes very “colorful” language) and then invite you in for a cup of coffee. (and most people would accept!!)

Alice later moved to the Senior Citizens apartments in Timber Lake and then to the Golden Living Center in Mobridge where she passed away on August 20, 2008.

Alice is survived by her children---Edwina (Pinky) Hollenbeck of Promise, Nellie (Vic) Hollenbeck of Promise, Keva (Andy) Aberle of Timber Lake, SD, Frank (Carol) Ducheneaux of Timber Lake, SD, Terry (Nancy) Ducheneaux of Promise, and Kendra (Justin) Enright of Timber Lake, SD. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren and many, many, many nieces and nephews. Special niece Audrey Hagel, Special friends, the Walters family and Ruby Marshall.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ed in 1975, her brother Lloyd(Son) in 1995, and a grandson Michael in 1987 and son-in-law Glenn Mowrer in 1972.
