Vernon Fauss

Vernon C. Fauss, 84, of Yankton died Saturday (Dec. 25, 2004) at Woodwinds Hospital, Woodbury, Minn.
He was born June 5, 1920 in Randolph, NE. He grew up at Hooper and was a 1937 graduate of Hooper High School. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II from April 1, 1943, to Dec. 14, 1945, and served in France with the 14th Field Army Hospital. He married Ermagrace Jacobsen on Jan. 22, 1944, at St. Louis, Mo. After his discharge, he worked for OPPD and lived in Omaha. He moved to Hastings in 1949 and worked for NPPD, as a power system dispatcher. He moved to Watertown in 1954 and was employed by the Bureau of Reclamation (n.k.a. WAPA) as power system operator. He spent 18 months in Fort Peck, Mont., before returning to Watertown. He retired in 1980. His first wife, Ermagrace, died Aug. 6, 1986. He married Charlotte Anderson Fauss on Sept. 24, 1994, at Hooper, Neb. The couple moved to Rapid City in 1994 and then to Yankton in January 2003.

Vernon loved to build and fly model airplanes, in 1994 he had a model shop from which he dispensed model airplanes, parts and his extensive knowledge of the hobby he loved so much.

He was a member of First Baptist Church at Watertown and former member of Nemo Community Church at Nemo and Cordes Lakes Community Church at Cordes Lakes, Ariz. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 336, the Academy of Model Aeronautics Association, a life member of Elks Lodge No. 838, a life member of V.F.W. Post No. 750, a life member of American Legion Post No. 17 and a life member of Voiture 773 of 40 & 8, all of Watertown.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Charlotte; six sons: Clyde and wife, Jynnine Fauss of Phoenix, Ariz; Vern and wife, Vivian Fauss of Casper, Wyo.; David and wife, Ann Fauss of Roseburg, Ore.; Larry Fauss of Wahoo, Neb.; John and wife, Bonnie Fauss of Tulsa, Okla.; and Richard and wife, Christine Fauss of Louisburg, Kan.; one daughter, Carol and husband, Charles Gauker of Yankton; two brothers: Ray and wife, Mary Fauss of Seattle, Wash.; and Gerald and wife, Marghi Fauss of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Flo Fiveash of Spokane, Wash.; one sister-in-law, Jerri Fauss of Hooper, Neb.; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Mabel (Lueninghoener) Fauss; his first wife, Ermagrace; and one brother, Marvin Fauss.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont, Neb., with the Rev. Greg Hall of First United Methodist Church, Fremont, officiating.

Visitation is from 2-9 p.m. today (Wednesday) and from 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday all at the Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont.

Military graveside services conducted by members of American Legion Post No. 18 of Hooper and the Winslow/Hooper V.F.W. Post No. 10535. Burial will be in the Hooper Cemetery.

Pallbearers are grandchildren: Charlene Gauker Overgard, Charles Brett Gauker, Corey Gauker, Sara Kuczek and Timothy and Andrea Fauss. Honorary pallbearers are grandchildren: Matt, Brian, Tara, Jacob and Caleb Fauss, Jennifer Tripplett, Misty Lopez, Rob Sheldon, Kim Drue and all of his great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Nemo Community Church and Cordes Lakes Community Church.

Douglas Berkenpas

LE MARS, Iowa -- Douglas E. Berkenpas, 46, of Le Mars, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident north of Seney, Iowa.
Douglas Edward Berkenpas was born Nov. 14,1958, in Le Mars, the son of Darrell and Lorraine (Schlichte) Berkenpas. Doug was baptized into the Catholic faith at St. James Catholic Church. He received his education through the Le Mars school system and graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1977. Doug was united in marriage to Patty Groepper on Aug. 6, 1981, at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars.

He began his 30-year career with Wells' Dairy. Inc., when he was 16 years old, working at the milk plant. For the past 24 years, Doug was a truck driver hauling milk from producers to the dairy in Le Mars. Doug enjoyed visiting with the individual producers. To many he was more than just their truck driver, he was their friend. He was a very conscientious driver, having received safe driving awards for each of the 24 years he drove for Wells' Dairy.

Doug was a member of St. James Catholic Church and often served as an usher for Saturday evening masses. Doug and Patty were very family-centered. They enjoyed camping and boating at Lewis and Clark Lake in Yankton, S.D. On those many outings, Doug mastered his "wash-tub" cooking skills. In the winter months, Doug and Patty and their children, Craig and Mike, enjoyed many snowmobiling trips to the Black Hills.

Around the holidays, Doug often played Santa for many families in Le Mars. During the years, Doug could be seen driving his boys from one lawn-mowing job to another. He and the boys also operated a wood-splitting business as a family venture with his father and brother, Tom. His work ethic was passed down to his children, the pride of his life.

He was also a member of the Eagles Club, dart league and the Powder Players Snowmobile Club.

Survivors include his wife, Patty of Le Mars; two children, Craig and Michael of Le Mars; his parents, Darrell and Lorraine Berkenpas of Le Mars; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jody and Steve Ohm of Le Mars and Linda and John Nilles of Le Mars; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Dave and Kris Berkenpas of Le Mars, and Tom and Michele Berkenpas of Le Mars; Patty's parents, Loren and Verna ed of Kingsley; four brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Donna and Dennis Hoss of Yankton, S.D.; Dianne and Shelton Mack of Mitchell, S.D.; Gary and Shyla Groepper of Kingsley, and Dave and Darcy Groepper of Kingsley; many nieces and nephews and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was on Thursday, December 23, 2004, at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, Iowa with interment at Calvary Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were with the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars.

Hazel Boyd

HURON -- Hazel (Grann) Boyd, age 91, of Huron, died Sunday, December 26, 2004, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.
Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery, rural Carpenter.

Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Kuhler Funeral Home with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Hazel Charlotte Grann was born June 24, 1913, to Elmer and Bertha Gertrude (Wicks) Grann, on what we know now as the Harvey and Goldie Wicks place at Carpenter, South Dakota. She was the oldest of five children, attending rural schools at Carpenter, and graduating from Clark High School in 1931.

On July 21, 1932, she married Arthur E. Boyd in Redfield, South Dakota. They raised their six children while farming near Carpenter and the Yale area. They moved to Huron in 1953. Art died in 1999.

She was an active member of the Huron First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Sunshine Circle Fellowship and Colfax Rebekkah Lodge No. 9. She played for the Carpenter Methodist Church services for many years, sang duets with Art, sang in the choir and gave piano lessons many years of her life. She treasured the many friendships that continued through the years.

Hazel lived her life for her families and extended families sharing her gift, love and joy of music with all of them. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they did her. She was a very loving, giving and caring mother and grandmother. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, card games, board games and tending to her houseplants and flowers. She was well-known for her letter writing and her love of canning, baking and cooking. She will always be remembered for her warm and caring smile She will be greatly missed by her surviving families, but we celebrate her life.

She is survived by her daughters: Joyce (LeRoy) Tschetter, Sioux Falls, Della Hofer, Peoria, AZ, and Jan (Paul) Aughenbaugh, Yankton; sons: Jim (Jo), Loveland, CO, Denny (Joan), Doland, and Rod (Gerri), Huron; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brothers: Cliff (Eileen) Grann, Seattle, WA, and Dick (Carol) Grann, Carpenter; sister, Elma Johnson, Anchorage, AK; sisters-in-law: Annie Grann, Cheyenne, WY and Alene (Hurley) Johnson, Huron; brothers-in-law: Delmer (Darleen) Boyd, Mitchell, and Gene Kant, Huron; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Art; infant son, Grenard Arthur; infant daughter, Phyllis Maxine; brother, Irving; son-in-law, Delbert Hofer; granddaughter, Fawn Annette Hofer; great-granddaughter, Abby Elizabeth Roy; great-grandson, Daniel Lee Aughenbaugh; and her parents.

Verona Tenbush

Verona Tenbush, 80, of Yankton, SD, passed away on December 23, 2004, at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2004, at the Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Oliver Omanson officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-9 p.m., Monday, December 27, 2004, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the chapel.

Pallbearers are Jim Flynn, Kim Hacecky, Clinton Davis, John Slemp, Marty Raab and Leonard Christensen. Honorary pallbearers are Bob Steinbach, Orlein Hevle, Bert Petersen and other city employees as well as the staff at Avera Sister James Care Center.

Verona was born on October 1, 1924, to Frank and Lula (Burford) Uleman Axen in Rolette County, North Dakota. She grew up in North Dakota and went on to work in the Cando Cafe in Cando, North Dakota, in the early 1950s before moving to Yankton. Verona married Barney Tenbush on May 30, 1954 in Yankton. While living in Yankton, she worked for several years in the H & K Cafe, a brief time in the Yankton Care Center and then began babysitting in her home until retiring.

Verona is survived by a special cousin, Donna Sieler and her husband Herb, of Fargo, ND; other cousins and friends: Sandy Taggart and family, of Yankton; LaVelle Jiricek and family, of Yankton; and John and Jean Schwader and family, of Crofton, NE.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a stepfather.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Calvary Baptist Church, 1700 Burleigh, Yankton, SD 57078; or the Avera Sister James Care Center, 2111 W. 11th St., Yankton, SD 57078.

Colin Hauck

Colin Hauck, age 2 days, passed away on December 24, 2004, at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD due to complications from birth.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 29, 2004, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Lesterville, SD with Rev. Joseph Puthenkulathil and Rev. Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his parents, Richard and Nancy (Vaith) Hauck of Utica, SD; a brother, Zane Hauck; grandparents: Ken and Elaine Vaith,of Lesterville, SD, Gary and Lana Hauck of Utica, SD; great-grandparents: Clifford and Dorothy Hauck of Utica, SD, Dave and Eileen Kortan of Yankton, SD, John and Verna Appleman of Johnstown, NE; great-great-grandparents, Theodore and Marian Appleman of Ainsworth, NE; aunts and uncles: Sarah and Kevin Chafee, Austin Hauck, Shawn Hauck, Bev and Bruce Ulmer, Brian and Dawn Vaith, Jeff and Susy Vaith, Brenda and Dave Edler, Dean and Jen Vaith, Corey and Jackie Vaith and a host of cousins.

He was preceded in death by cousins: Nick Vaith, Brett Hauck, Cherry Appleman and Susan Appleman.

Edward Danilko

Edward G. Danilko, age 57, of Yankton, passed away Sunday, December 26, 2004, from a battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2004, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with Rev. Dave Gunderson officiating. Scattering of the cremated remains will take place at a later date.

Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ed was born December 17, 1947, to Edward J. and Doris (Price) Danilko. He spent his childhood in Rhinelander, WI graduating from Rhinelander High School in 1966. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin -- Stevens Point, he became involved in sales before purchasing Culligan Water Conditioning in Yankton in 1993.

Ed was active in the Big Friend/Little Friend Program in Yankton, a former member of the Kiwanis Club and was a supporter of the Roger Haas Basketball Program.

Ed was a devoted son, father, brother and friend. He was an avid outdoorsman whose friendly manner, gift of conversation and genuine concern for others will be missed by his family, friends and community.

Grateful for sharing his life are his mother, Doris Danilko of Rhinelander, WI; sons: Derek (Melanie) of Washington, DC and Edward (Ashli) of Columbia, MO; brother, James (Mary) Danilko of Minocqua, WI and Ft. Myers, FL; sister, Janet (David) Frasier of Rhinelander, WI; nieces: Kimberly Mihelich and Diane Chobot; grandsons: Darren and Sean Danilko of Washington, DC; step-grandson, Tom Bultje; special friend, Mike Brewer of Yankton, SD; and beloved companion, Rebecca Boyd of Yankton, SD.

His father, Edward J., preceded him in death in 1988.

Memorials are directed to Big Friend/Little Friend, 231 Broadway Ave., Yankton, SD 57078 or Hope Lodge at 411 2nd Street NW, Rochester, MN 55901.

Charlotte Ann White

VOLIN -- Charlotte Ann White, age 72, of Volin, South Dakota, died Friday, December 17, 2004, at her home.
A private family service will be on Monday, December 20, 2004, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton. Burial will be at the Vangen Lutheran Cemetery in Mission Hill, South Dakota.

Pallbearers are Ryan Sime, Taylor Sime, Charlie White and Ross Goeden. Honorary pallbearers are Anna, Kyle and Vincent Person.

Charlotte was born August 2, 1932, to Chris and Olga (Hansen) Snyder. She grew up south of Gayville, South Dakota and graduated from Gayville High School in 1950. She then attended college at Springfield, South Dakota, graduating with a teaching certificate. After college, she taught elementary school at Revillo, South Dakota. On July 20, 1952, she married Charles White at Gayville. After their marriage, she farmed with her husband near Volin. She enjoyed working in her yard and with her flowers. She also enjoyed fishing, sewing, and crossword puzzles. She was a member of the Danish Lutheran Church in rural Gayville.

Survivors include four daughters: Chris (Dennis) Person of Ridgecrest, California, Candace White of Sioux Falls, Cindy (Larry) Sime of Ipswich, South Dakota and Chele Goeden of Mission Hill; seven grandchildren: Anna, Kyle and Vincent Person, Ryan and Taylor Sime, Charlie White and Ross Goeden.

She was preceded by her parents; husband, Charles on September 26, 1998, at the age of 69; and one brother, Marian Hansen.

Allen Parsons

VERMILLION -- Allen Parsons, 81, of Vermillion died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, at his home after a long battle with cancer.
Allen was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Sioux Falls, SD to AW and Nellie (Wood) Parsons. He graduated from the Hurley High School in 1941, and married Annabelle Nelson on Aug. 9, 1941, in Luvurne, MN.

Allen had served in World War II, and moved to Volin, SD in 1946 to begin farming. He farmed in the Volin area all his life, and retired at age 78. Allen and his wife had lived on the farm near Wakonda until 10 days before his death when they moved to Vermillion. He had an unbelievable love for all the animals on the farm.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing cards with his friends, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his big heart and sense of humor.

Allen is survived by his wife, Annabelle of Vermillion; two sons: Roger (Laurie) of Tea, SD, and Rodney of Vermillion; a daughter, Linda (Earl) Brown of Vermillion; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at the First United Methodist Church in Vermillion with burial to follow in the Bluffview cemetery in Vermillion.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion.

Ruth Schamber

Ruth K. Schamber, age 89, of Yankton, died Sunday, December 12, 2004, at Wakonda Heritage Manor, Wakonda, South Dakota.
A funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 16, 2004, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Yankton with the Reverend David Gunderson officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton.

Visitation is from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home, Yankton with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Pallbearers are Jeremy Schamber, David Buchmann, Harold Buchmann, Darrold Buchmann, Timothy Buchmann and Christopher Buchmann.

Ruth Karolina Schamber was born April 2, 1915, in Clayton, South Dakota to Friedrich and Elisabeth (Schmidtgall) Buchmann. She was baptized on May 23, 1915, at her home and was confirmed May 11, 1930, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clayton, South Dakota. She attended grade school at Wolfcreek School District No. 31 in Hutchinson County. She cared for her father and brothers at the age of 18 after her mother's death. On October 13, 1946, she married Edgar George Schamber at Clayton, South Dakota. After her marriage, she helped on the farm near Freeman and Wakonda until 1973 when they moved to Yankton. She then worked at Gurney's, Kochi Inn, and the Concord Nursing Home as a cook. In 2001, she became a resident of Wakonda Heritage Manor. She was a member of the Lodi Club and the Centerville Lutheran Church Ladies Aide. She loved caring for her grandchildren and enjoyed quilting and crocheting, cooking and gardening.

Survivors include twin sons, Reverend Kenneth (Diane) Schamber of Hannibal, Missouri and Kermit (Muriel) Schamber of Vermillion, South Dakota; five grandchildren: Naomi (Mike) Johnson of Hannibal, Missouri, Jeremy (Kelli) Schamber of Joplin, Missouri, Lynnae Schamber of Hannibal, Missouri, Laurel Schamber of Yankton and Alisa Schamber of Vermillion; two great-grandchildren: Samuel and Hannah Johnson; three step-great-grandchildren: Anthony, Miranda and Michael Johnson; one brother, Friedrich (Vivian) Buchmann of Mitchell, South Dakota; two sisters-in-law: Loretta Wilson of Austin, Texas and Susan Schulz of Emery, South Dakota; two brothers-in-law: Max Schamber of Freeman, South Dakota and Elmer (Gladys) Schamber of Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edgar on September 15, 1987, at the age of 75; three brothers: Rueben, Robert and Wilhelm Buchmann; and two sisters: Hertha Buchmann and Esther Meisenhoelder.
