Funeral services for Lois Marshall, age 83, of rural Timber Lake will be at 10 AM MT on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at the United Parish in Timber Lake. Maribeth Anderson will be officiating. Burial will be beside her husband in the Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be on Monday at the church starting at 5 PM MT with a prayer service at 7 PM. Mrs. Marshal passed away Wednesday August 6, 2008 at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck due to complications from a heart attack.

Lois Arleen Flanagan was born July 2, 1925 at home to Leta (Davis) and George Thomas Flanagan one mile west of Dog Butte, which is located four miles east of Timber Lake. She was the youngest of five children.

Her parents arrived in South Dakota from Ambia, IN in 1916 to live and work near family in the Mount Vernon area until 1917. Her sister Eleanor was born there.

The family returned to Ambia for the next year. On the move again, the Flanagans packed up and moved to Montana where they lived and worked for a rancher for about nine months before moving to a farm near Onaka, SD. Their children Elizabeth and John were born here. George, Leta and family arrived in the Timber Lake area in 1923, George by freight train with the animals and farm equipment, Leta and the children by car with another family. They settled west of Dog Butte. They moved from this place when Lois was very young because the owner didn’t want to lease out the farm anymore. She spent her early childhood helping with the various farming chores. They moved southeast of Trail City to the Drake place, where they took care of horses and did a little farming. When the owner sold the horses in the fall of 1929, George, Leta and another couple, Sonny and Edith Anderson, rented a place west of Timber Lake, where they did some farming. In 1930 the family moved southwest of that location so the Andersons could have that place. The Flanagans had more farm land in their new location. They lived there four years, and then moved southwest of Timber Lake to the Minton place. They lived and farmed there for six years. In the fall of 1940 the family moved to the Ted Cope place southeast of Trail City. In the fall of 1941 George, Leta and Lois moved to a ranch east of Red Top Hill, near Needle Butte. Lois attended the Timber Lake Public School and graduated from the eighth grade in 1940 but as the family moved farther out in the country she was unable to attend high school. She spent the next several years helping her folks with the milking, farming and haying. She enjoyed working with horses and covered a lot of eastern Dewey County on horseback, keeping the livestock from grazing too far from their home ground. There were no fences in the area during this time.

In 1947 Lois and a friend, Dorothy Plummer (Opp) traveled to Mill City, OR to stay near Lois’ sister Elizabeth. They both worked in a café. They then went to Miles City, MT where Lois worked in the Ten Spot, Tip Top, Bison Café and the Met.

She was called home to help out her parents on the place early in 1948. She met Alfred (Swede) Marshall, who was a friend of her brother, John.

Lois and Swede Marshall were married on February 8, 1952 in Pierre by Rev. James Torbert in the Methodist parsonage. They began their married life on the ranch Swede had started in 1948 located 19 miles southeast of Timber Lake. Their first home consisted of three shacks put together. In 1960 before their fourth child was born they purchased a house and moved it “down home.” There they raised their eight children — Clee, Johnny (Del), Mattie Lou, Kitty, Kip, Melody, Tipton and Cindy. They shared 40 years of hard work, family and the simple life of cattle ranching, which they enjoyed.

Although Lois only completed eighth grade she did not let that stop her from furthering her education. She completed a course in Practical Nursing, receiving her Post Graduate School of Nursing Diploma from Chicago, IL along with her nurse’s cap on October 22, 1959. She was an avid reader of books on many subjects and interests. She loved reading about history. She subscribed to a variety of magazines and kept abreast of world and national happenings. She collected books by her husband’s favorite western author, Louis L’Amour, and cookbooks and clippings for recipes and tidbits of history. She was a great cook, always welcoming family and friends to share coffee or a meal; her homemade bread was a favorite. She believed in reflexology and helped ease our pains over the years.

Besides raising a family of eight children she was a very active partner in the operation of their ranch from doing the daily milking, planting to caring for large gardens, baking and cooking, helping with livestock, haying, passing along her knowledge on a variety of subjects, and battling impossible roads to make sure her children received more education than she did.

Lois loved to play cards, either solitaire or a game with family or friends. Her mother and siblings shared the same interest growing up. She said it kept a person’s fingers, eyes and brain nimble! Many a morning a person could hear the scuff and slap of the cards on the table as she shuffled her deck of cards and smell the coffee brewing as she started her day. Playing dice with family members was another enjoyable pastime for her. She was a formidable opponent at cards, dice and games. She loved to teach and play games with the grandkids as they came along. It was also funny watching Lois and Swede play cards; Swede would try to pull a fast one over on her! Lois loved listening and dancing to traditional country music especially waltzes and polkas. Gene Autry was one of her favorites.

She made each member of her family feel loved by offering encouragement and advice when needed. She willingly gave of her time, knowledge and love and asked nothing in return. She was a member of the Republican Party and the Timber Lake & Area Historical Society. She knew a lot of the local history and people.

After Swede’s death in 1992 Lois continued to live on the home ranch with two of her daughters until 1993 when Kitty married. Lois and Melody continued ranching with help during various times of the year. She enjoyed her independence and the country life. Until the summer of 2006 Lois actively helped with the ranch chores, enjoying being outdoors.

Proud to have shared her life include children — Johnny ‘Del’ A. (Andree) Marshall of Mobridge; Mattie Lou (Dave) Doan of Isabel; Kitty V. (Dave) Lutz of Faith; Kip V. (Chris) Marshall of Belle Fourche,; Melody L. Marshall of Timber Lake; Tipton M. (Connie) Marshall of Timber Lake; and Cindy R. Marshall (Lester Vig) of Dupree.

Also surviving are 17 grandchildren— Cheryl Marshall; Trey Marshall; Clint and Shanna Doan; Wyatt, Shane, Bonnie and Will Lutz; Lance, Chelsea and Buck Marshall; Dakota, Jade and Cody Marshall; and J.C., Kayleen and Owen Garreaux; five great-grandchildren— Stephen Marshall, Anthony Cooper, Aliona and Ariona Garreaux and Kai Marshall; and many nieces and nephews.
